Sumukha Is Granted Long Life
Narada asks the Naga Aryaka to accept Matali's daughter Gunakeshi as wife for his grandson Sumukha. Aryaka is glad yet troubled: Garuda, who devoured Sumukha's father, has vowed to eat Sumukha within a month. Matali takes Sumukha with Narada to Indra, where Vishnu asks that the young serpent be given the nectar; Indra, wary of Garuda, grants him instead a long life, and Sumukha marries Gunakeshi.

Verse 1 (5.104.1)
mātalervacanaṃ śrutvā nārado munisattamaḥ | abravīddevarājaṃ tamāryakaṃ kurunandana
Hearing Matali's words, Narada, best of sages, spoke to that godlike king Aryaka, O joy of the Kurus.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's text: it is the CE's star passage 5.102*0438 (printed before 5.102.1), which reads nāgarājānam ('the king of the serpents') where Wikisource has देवराजं तम्; the base reading is kept and rendered as 'godlike king'.

Verse 2 (5.104.2)
sūto'yaṃ mātalirnāma śakrasya dayitaḥ suhṛt | śuciḥ śīlaguṇopetastejasvī vīryavānbalī
This is Matali, the charioteer, the dear friend of Shakra: pure, rich in good conduct and virtues, spirited, valiant and strong.
Note on the text: Speaker set to Narada: his address to Aryaka, announced in verse 1, fills verses 2–12 with no printed heading in Wikisource (the critical edition prints nārada uvāca here); the input carried कण्व over.
Verse 3 (5.104.3)
śakrasyāyaṃ sakhā caiva mantrī sārathireva ca | alpāntaraprabhāvaśca vāsavena raṇe raṇe
He is Shakra's friend, his counsellor and his charioteer; in battle after battle his might falls little short of Vasava's.
Verse 4 (5.104.4)
ayaṃ harisahasreṇa yuktaṃ jaitraṃ rathottamam | devāsureṣu yuddheṣu manasaiva niyacchati
In the wars of the gods and asuras he guides by thought alone Indra's excellent, ever-victorious chariot yoked with a thousand bay horses.
Verse 5 (5.104.5)
anena vijitānaśvairdorbhyāṃ jayati vāsavaḥ | anena balabhitpūrvaṃ prahṛte praharatyuta
Those whom he has first overcome with his horses, Vasava then conquers with his arms; only when he has struck first does the slayer of Bala strike.
Verse 6 (5.104.6)
asya kanyā varārohā rūpeṇāsadṛśī bhuvi | satyaśīlaguṇopetā guṇakeśīti viśrutā
He has a daughter of lovely hips, unequalled in beauty on earth, endowed with truthfulness, good conduct and virtue, known far and wide as Gunakeshi.
Verse 7 (5.104.7)
tasyāsya yatnāccaratastrailokyamamaradyute | sumukho bhavataḥ pautro rocate duhituḥ patiḥ
As he searched with care through the three worlds, O you of godlike splendour, your grandson Sumukha pleased him as a husband for his daughter.
Verse 8 (5.104.8)
yadi te rocate samyagbhujagottama mā ciram | kriyatāmāryaka kṣipraṃ buddhiḥ kanyāparigrahe
If this truly pleases you, best of serpents, then without delay, Aryaka, quickly make up your mind to accept the maiden.
Verse 9 (5.104.9)
yathā viṣṇukule lakṣmīryathā svāhā vibhāvasoḥ | kule tava tathaivāstu guṇakeśī sumadhyamā
As Lakshmi is in Vishnu's house, and Svaha in the house of Fire, so let slender-waisted Gunakeshi be in your family.
Verse 10 (5.104.10)
pautrasyārthe bhavāṃstasmādguṇakeśīṃ pratīcchatu | sadṛśīṃ pratirūpasya vāsavasya śacīmiva
So accept Gunakeshi for your grandson, a match as fitting for that fine youth as Shachi is for Vasava.
Verse 11 (5.104.11)
pitṛhīnamapi hyenaṃ guṇato varayāmahe | bahumānācca bhavatastathaivairāvatasya ca
Though he has lost his father, we choose him for his virtues, and out of high regard for you and for Airavata,
Note on the text: The automatic alignment left this verse unmatched; it is the critical edition's 5.102.10ab–cd (the CE's verse 10 has a third line, which Wikisource places at the head of its verse 12).
Verse 12 (5.104.12)
sumukhasya guṇaiścaiva śīlaśaucadamādibhiḥ | abhigamya svayaṃ kanyāmayaṃ dātuṃ samudyataḥ | mātalistasya saṃmānaṃ kartumarho bhavānapi
and for Sumukha's own virtues — his character, purity, self-control and the rest. Matali has come in person, ready to give his daughter; you too should honour him.
Note on the text: The automatic alignment left this verse unmatched; its first line is the critical edition's 5.102.10ef and its last two lines are 5.102.11 (मातलिस्तस्य for mātales tasya kept as the base reading).

Note on the text: The automatic alignment left this verse unmatched; its first two lines are the critical edition's 5.102.13 (मन्ये नैतद् and महर्षे for na me naitad and devarṣe kept as the base reading) and its third line is 5.102.14ab.

Note on the text: Corrected प्रज्ञास्वाम्य- → प्रज्ञास्याम्य- (misprint in Wikisource; व for य; the page's commentary glosses प्रज्ञास्यामि, critical edition prajñāsyāmy).
