Garuda Describes the East

Garuda, sent by Vishnu, asks Galava which of the four directions he should take him to first, and begins by describing the east. It is the quarter where the sun first rises, where the daughters of Daksha bore their offspring, where Indra was crowned king of the gods, and where the Vedas were first sung and the Savitri taught; it is called Purva, "the first", because the gods occupied it first. He calls it the gate of the three worlds and of heaven, and offers to take Galava there or to describe another direction.

Suparna (Garuda) said

Verse 1 (5.108.1)

anuśiṣṭo'smi devena gālava jñānayoninā | brūhi kāmaṃ tu kāṃ yāmi draṣṭuṃ prathamato diśam

I have been commanded, Galava, by the god who is the source of knowledge. Tell me your wish: which direction shall I go to see first?

Note on the text: Corrected प्रथममो → प्रथमतो (misprint in Wikisource; म for त; the critical edition reads prathamato).

Verse 2 (5.108.2)

pūrvāṃ vā dakṣiṇāṃ vāhamathavā paścimāṃ diśam | uttarāṃ vā dvijaśreṣṭha kuto gacchāmi gālava

The east, or the south, or the west, or the north, best of the twice-born — which way shall I go, Galava?

Verse 3 (5.108.3)

yasyāmudayate pūrvaṃ sarvalokaprabhāvanaḥ | savitā yatra sandhyāyāṃ sādhyānāṃ vartate tapaḥ

There is the quarter in which the sun, who brings all the worlds into being, first rises; where, at twilight, the austerities of the Sadhyas are performed;

Verse 4 (5.108.4)

yasyāṃ pūrvaṃ matirjātā yayā vyāptamidaṃ jagat | cakṣuṣī yatra dharmasya yatra caiṣa pratiṣṭhitaḥ

in which first arose the intelligence that pervades this world; where the two eyes of Dharma are, and where he is established;

Verse 5 (5.108.5)

kṛtaṃ yato hutaṃ havyaṃ sarpate sarvatodiśam | etaddvāraṃ dvijaśreṣṭha divasasya tathā'dhvanaḥ

from which the oblation, once offered, spreads in every direction. This, best of the twice-born, is the gate of the day and of the road.

Note on the text: Removed an invisible zero-width non-joiner inside एतद्द्वारं. The page also prints a double danda after the first line; the row and its closing mark make this one verse, as in the critical edition (5.106.5, reading hutaṃ yatomukhair for कृतं यतो हुतं).

Verse 6 (5.108.6)

atra pūrvaṃ prasūtā vai dākṣāyaṇyaḥ prajāḥ striyaḥ | yasyāṃ diśi pravṛddhāśca kaśyapasyātmasaṃbhavāḥ

Here the daughters of Daksha first gave birth to their offspring; in this quarter the children born of Kashyapa grew and multiplied.

Verse 7 (5.108.7)

adomūlā surāṇāṃ śrīryatra śakro'bhyaṣicyata | surarājyena viprarṣe devaiścātra tapaścitam

From this root springs the glory of the gods; here Shakra was consecrated to the kingship of the gods, brahmin seer, and here the gods heaped up their austerities.

Verse 8 (5.108.8)

etasmātkāraṇādbrahmanpūrvetyeṣā digucyate | yasmātpūrvatare kāle pūrvamevāvṛtāsuraiḥ

For this reason, brahmin, this quarter is called Purva, "the first": because in an earlier age it was the first to be occupied by the gods.

Verse 9 (5.108.9)

ata eva ca sarveṣāṃ pūrvāmāśāṃ pracakṣate | pūrvaṃ sarvāṇi kāryāṇi daivāni sukhamīpsatā

For this very reason the eastern quarter is called the first of all; one who seeks happiness should perform all rites to the gods first, facing this way.

Verse 10 (5.108.10)

atra vedāñjagau pūrvaṃ bhagavām̐llokabhāvanaḥ | atraivoktā savitrāsītsāvitrī brahmavādiṣu

Here the blessed creator of the worlds first sang the Vedas; here the Savitri was taught by Savitar to the expounders of Brahman.

Verse 11 (5.108.11)

atra dattāni sūryeṇa yajūṃṣi dvijasattama | atra labdhavaraḥ somaḥ suraiḥ kratuṣu pīyate

Here the Sun gave the Yajus formulas, best of the twice-born; here Soma, having won a boon, is drunk by the gods at the sacrifices.

Verse 12 (5.108.12)

atra tṛptā hutavahāḥ svāṃ yonimupabhuñjate | atra pātālamāśritya varuṇaḥ śriyamāpa ca

Here the fires, sated, feed upon their own source; here Varuna, taking refuge in the nether world, won his prosperity.

Verse 13 (5.108.13)

atra pūrvaṃ vasiṣṭhasya paurāṇasya dvijarṣabha | sūtiścaiva pratiṣṭhā ca nidhanaṃ ca prakāśate

Here, bull among the twice-born, the birth, the rise and the death of the ancient Vasishtha of old are made known.

Verse 14 (5.108.14)

oṅkārasyātra jāyante sṛtayo daśatīrdaśa | pibanti munayo yatra havirdhūmaṃ sma dhūmapāḥ

Here arise the ten thousand paths of the syllable Om; here the sages who live on smoke drink the smoke of the oblations.

Verse 15 (5.108.15)

prokṣitā yatra bahavo varāhādyā mṛgā vane | śakreṇa yajñabhāgārthe daivateṣu prakalpitāḥ

Here many beasts of the forest, boars and others, were sprinkled by Shakra for the sacrifice and assigned to the deities as their share.

Verse 16 (5.108.16)

atrāhitāḥ kṛtaghnāśca mānuṣāścāsurāśca ye | udayaṃstānhi sarvānvai krodhāddhanti vibhāvasuḥ

Here the rising sun, in his wrath, strikes down all who are hostile and ungrateful, whether men or asuras.

Verse 17 (5.108.17)

etaddvāraṃ trilokasya svargasya ca sukhasya ca | eṣa pūrvo diśāṃ bhāgo viśāvo'tra yadīcchasi

This is the gate of the three worlds, of heaven and of happiness. This is the eastern quarter; let us enter it, if you wish.

Verse 18 (5.108.18)

priyaṃ kāryaṃ hi me tasya yasyāsmi vacane sthitaḥ | brūhi gālava yāsyāmi śṛṇu cāpyaparāṃ diśam

For I must do what pleases him at whose command I stand. Tell me, Galava, and I will go; but hear also about another quarter.
