Madhavi Given to Vishvamitra

Garuda finds Galava still two hundred horses short of the eight hundred he owes his teacher. He tells him that of the thousand rare horses Richika once gave King Gadhi, the three kings bought six hundred and the other four hundred were lost on the road, so no more can be had; Galava should offer Madhavi to Vishvamitra in place of the missing two hundred. Vishvamitra accepts her, fathers Ashtaka on her and returns her, and Galava, his fee paid, gives Madhavi back to her father Yayati and goes to the forest.

gālavaṃ vainateyo'tha prahasannidamabravīt | diṣṭyā kṛtārthaṃ paśyāmi bhavantamiha vai dvija

Then Vainateya, laughing, said this to Galava: "Happily, brahmin, I see you here with your purpose achieved."

Verse 2 (5.119.2)

गालवस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा वैनतेयेन भाषितम् । चतुर्भागावशिष्टं तदाचख्यौ कार्यमस्य हि ॥

gālavastu vacaḥ śrutvā vainateyena bhāṣitam | caturbhāgāvaśiṣṭaṃ tadācakhyau kāryamasya hi

Hearing the words spoken by Vainateya, Galava told him that a quarter of his task still remained.

Verse 3 (5.119.3)

suparṇastvabravīdenaṃ gālavaṃ vadatāṃ varaḥ | prayatnaste na kartavyo naiṣa saṃpatsyate tava

Then Suparna, best of speakers, said to Galava: "You need make no further effort; this will not be accomplished by you."

purā hi kānyakubje vai gādheḥ satyavatīṃ sutām | bhāryārthe varayatkanyāmṛcīkastena bhāṣitaḥ

Long ago, in Kanyakubja, Richika asked for Gadhi's daughter, the maiden Satyavati, as his wife, and Gadhi said to him:

The king performed the Pundarika sacrifice and gave those horses to the brahmins; and from them those kings bought two hundred apiece, and so they came to have them.

Verse 8 (5.119.8)

अपराण्यपि चत्वारि शतानि द्विजसत्तम । नीयमानानि संतारे हृतान्यासन्नितस्ततः ॥

aparāṇyapi catvāri śatāni dvijasattama | nīyamānāni saṃtāre hṛtānyāsannitastataḥ

The other four hundred, best of brahmins, were carried off here and there while they were being led along the road.
