Bhishma Calls Karna a Half-Ratha; Karna Vows Not to Fight While Bhishma Lives

Bhishma rates the Gandhara brothers Achala and Vrishaka as rathas, then declares Karna, parted from his natural armour and earrings and laid under Rama's and a brahmin's curses, only a half-ratha; Drona agrees. Karna, stung, accuses Bhishma of sowing division out of spite, calls him a senile half-ratha, and swears he will not fight while Bhishma lives. Bhishma answers that he spares Karna only to avoid a quarrel on the eve of war, recalls his own feats, and dares him to face Arjuna. Duryodhana calms them both and asks Bhishma to rate the Pandavas' warriors before the battle begins at dawn.
