Virata Parva · Adhyaya 2

Yudhishthira Will Serve Virata as Kanka

Their forest exile over, the Pandavas take counsel with Dhaumya, and Yudhishthira asks Arjuna where they should spend the thirteenth year. Arjuna names the countries around the Kurus, among them Virata's prosperous city, and Yudhishthira chooses the court of the Matsya king. When Arjuna wonders how a king so upright could serve another, Yudhishthira says he will go as Kanka, a mendicant brahmin skilled at dice and learned in many sciences, and will say he was once Yudhishthira's dearest friend.
