Virata Parva · Adhyaya 42

Arjuna Names the Owners of the Weapons

Arjuna gently reassures the frightened Uttara and answers his questions. He identifies Partha's bow Gandiva and tells its history, how Brahma, Shiva, Indra, Soma and Varuna held it in turn before Agni won it from Varuna and gave it to Partha. He then names the bows of Yudhishthira, Bhima, Nakula and Sahadeva, their arrows, and the swords in their various sheaths, and Bhima's great mace, explaining each weapon and its owner in turn.

Verse 1 (4.42.1)

उत्तरेणैवमुक्तस्तु पार्थो वैराटिमब्रवीत् । मृद्व्या प्रत्याययन्वाचा भीतं शङ्कावशं गतम् ॥

uttareṇaivamuktastu pārtho vairāṭimabravīt | mṛdvyā pratyāyayanvācā bhītaṃ śaṅkāvaśaṃ gatam

Spoken to thus by Uttara, Partha answered Virata's son, reassuring him with gentle words, for he was afraid and in the grip of doubt.

Note on the text: Corrected अत्तरेण → उत्तरेण (misprint in Wikisource; अ for उ; the apparatus reads uttareṇaivam). Not in the critical text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as 4.38.36*0708.

Note on the text: Corrected अत्त्वया → यत्त्वया (misprint in Wikisource; अ for य; the relative यत् is needed for the clause, as in the critical edition's yan māṃ pūrvam ihāpṛcchaḥ). The verse is a recension variant of the critical edition 4.38.36.

Such is the power of this excellent bow, and great is its speed. The one like a blue lotus belongs to the king, the great-souled Kauravya.

Note on the text: Corrected महावेतेतच्च → महावेगमेतच्च (Wikisource's line has lost a syllable — it scans 15 — and महावेते is not a word; the smallest fix restoring the metre and the evident word is महावेगम्, "of great speed"; the critical edition reads mahāvīryaṃ mahad divyam etat tad dhanur uttamam at 4.38.42ab, so this restoration is conjectural).
