Arjuna Turns the Herds Back

Arjuna looks for Duryodhana in the Kaurava array, naming the warriors who hold its centre and wings, and tells Uttara to make for the king, who is driving off the cattle. Bhishma reads his purpose and leads the army after him to protect Duryodhana. Arjuna announces his name, buries the cattle-guard under a storm of arrows and blows his conch; the terrified cows turn back south, and the herdsmen drive them home to the Matsya country while the Kuru chariots close in on Arjuna as he heads for Duryodhana.

Note on the text: Corrected गश्चैवाशु → गाश्चैवाशु (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign; the critical edition's appendix reads gāś caivāśu). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 3–4.

Arjuna said

Verse 39 (4.55.39)

yāvadete nivartante kuravo javamāsthitāḥ | yāhyuttareṇa gāścaitāḥ sainyānāṃ ca nṛpātmaja

While these Kurus are turning back at full speed, drive these cows round to the north of the armies, prince.

Note on the text: Arjuna's speech, begun in the second line of verse 38 (no speaker heading printed). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 5–6.

Verse 40 (4.55.40)

paśyantu kuravaḥ sarve mama vīryaparākramam

Let all the Kurus see my valour and might.

Note on the text: Wikisource prints a speaker heading (वैशम्पायन उवाच) after this line, inside its verse 40; the verse is split at the heading and both halves keep the number 40. This single line, marked by the page as a verse end, closes Arjuna's speech. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 7.

Vaishampayana said

Verse 41 (4.55.41)

te lābhamiva manvānāḥ kuravo'rjunamāhave | dṛṣṭvā yāntamadūrasthaṃ kṣipramabhyapatanrathaiḥ

Seeing Arjuna moving off not far away on the field, the Kurus, thinking it a stroke of luck, swiftly fell on him with their chariots,

Note on the text: The second half of Wikisource's verse 40, after the speaker heading (वैशम्पायन उवाच) printed inside it. Verse division from here to the end of the adhyaya follows Wikisource's own verse-end marks, which fall after the first line of each following row: this verse joins the line after the heading to the first line of row 41, and each following verse joins the second line of one row to the first line of the next (the extraction had paired the lines by row). Each later verse carries the number of the row in which its verse-end mark falls, so Wikisource's number 41 is absorbed. Corrected आहव → आहवे (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign; the critical edition's appendix reads āhave) and दृष्टवा → दृष्ट्वा (misprint; missing virama). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 8–9.

Verse 42 (4.55.42)

hastyaśvaparivāreṇa mahatā'bhivirājatā | yodhaiḥ prāsāsihastaiśca cāpabāṇodyatāyudhaiḥ

with a great and splendid following of elephants and horses, and with warriors holding lances and swords, bows and arrows and raised weapons.

Note on the text: Re-divided to follow Wikisource's own verse-end marks (see verse 41). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 10–11.

Verse 43 (4.55.43)

tānyanīkānyaśobhanta kurūṇāmātatāyinām | saṃsarpanta ivākāśe vidyutvanto valāhakāḥ

Those divisions of the Kurus, bent on violence, looked splendid, like clouds charged with lightning drifting across the sky.

Note on the text: Re-divided to follow Wikisource's own verse-end marks (see verse 41). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 12–13.

Verse 44 (4.55.44)

tāni dṛṣṭvā'pyanīkāni nivartitarathāni ca | pārtho'pi vāyuvadghoraṃ sainyāgraṃ vyadhunoccharaiḥ

Seeing those divisions, their chariots wheeled round toward him, Partha in turn, like the wind, shook the dreadful front of the army with his arrows.

Note on the text: Re-divided to follow Wikisource's own verse-end marks (see verse 41). Corrected वायुवद्धोरं → वायुवद्घोरं (misprint in Wikisource; द्ध for द्घ in the sandhi of वायुवत् + घोरम्; the critical edition's appendix reads vāyuvad ghoraṃ). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); it appears in the critical edition's Appendix I, No. 43 (printed after 4.48.23), lines 14–15 (reading hy for 'pi in the first line).

Verse 45 (4.55.45)

tāṃ śatrusenāṃ tarasā praṇudya gāścāpi jitvā dhanuṣā pareṇa | duryodhanāyābhimukhaṃ prayāntaṃ kurupravīrāḥ sahasā'bhyagacchan

When he had driven back that enemy host by force and won back the cows with his peerless bow, and was going on toward Duryodhana, the foremost heroes of the Kurus suddenly came at him.

Note on the text: Re-divided to follow Wikisource's own verse-end marks (see verse 41). This upajati joins a variant of CE 4.49.1ab (sa śatrusenāṃ tarasā praṇudya gās tā vijityātha dhanurdharāgryaḥ) to a variant of CE 4.49.2cd (… kurupravīrāḥ sahasābhipetuḥ); CE 4.49.1cd has no counterpart here, but the verse reads complete, so nothing is restored. The critical edition begins a new adhyaya (4.49) here.

Verse 46 (4.55.46)

goṣu prayātāsu javena mātsyānkirīṭinaṃ prītiyutaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā | paśūnsamādāya tato nivṛttā gopāḥ samastāḥ prayayuśca rāṣṭram

As the cows sped away toward the Matsyas, all the herdsmen, seeing the diadem-wearer well pleased, gathered up the cattle, turned back and made for their own country.

Note on the text: Re-divided to follow Wikisource's own verse-end marks (see verse 41). The first line is a variant of CE 4.49.2ab; the second is not in the critical edition's text (its apparatus has it as 4.49.2b*0898).
