Yudhishthira's Hymn to Durga
On the way into Virata's city Yudhishthira, with his brothers, praises the goddess Durga — born of Yashoda, sister of Vasudeva, slayer of Mahisha, dweller on the Vindhya — who rescues those who call on her from every danger. Pleased, the goddess appears to him, promises victory over the Kaurava host and the recovery of the kingdom, blesses all who recite the hymn, and assures the Pandavas that no one in Virata's city will recognise them before she vanishes.
