Verse 1 (bhagavata.11.16.1)

श्रीउद्धव उवाच त्वं ब्रह्म परमं साक्षादनाद्यन्तमपावृतम् । सर्वेषामपि भावानां त्राणस्थित्यप्ययोद्भवः ॥ 16.1 ॥

śrī-uddhava uvāca tvaṁ brahma paramaṁ sākṣād anādy-antam apāvṛtam sarveṣām api bhāvānāṁ trāṇa-sthity-apyayodbhavaḥ

Sri Uddhava said: You are directly the Supreme Brahman itself, without beginning or end, unconcealed by anything; You are the protection, maintenance, dissolution and origin of all things that exist.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.11.16.2)

उच्चावचेषु भूतेषु दुर्ज्ञेयमकृतात्मभिः । उपासते त्वां भगवन् याथातथ्येन ब्राह्मणाः ॥ 16.2 ॥

uccāvaceṣu bhūteṣu durjñeyam akṛtātmabhiḥ upāsate tvāṁ bhagavan yāthā-tathyena brāhmaṇāḥ

O Bhagavan, although those whose minds are unpurified find it hard to recognize You present in beings both high and low, the brahmanas who truly know You worship You exactly as You are.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.11.16.3)

येषु येषु च भूतेषु भक्त्या त्वां परमर्षयः । उपासीनाः प्रपद्यन्ते संसिद्धिं तद् वदस्व मे ॥ 16.3 ॥

yeṣu yeṣu ca bhūteṣu bhaktyā tvāṁ paramarṣayaḥ upāsīnāḥ prapadyante saṁsiddhiṁ tad vadasva me

Please tell me in which particular beings the great sages, worshiping You there with devotion, attain their perfection.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.11.16.4)

गूढश्चरसि भूतात्मा भूतानां भूतभावन । न त्वां पश्यन्ति भूतानि पश्यन्तं मोहितानि ते ॥ 16.4 ॥

gūḍhaś carasi bhūtātmā bhūtānāṁ bhūta-bhāvana na tvāṁ paśyanti bhūtāni paśyantaṁ mohitāni te

O nurturer of all beings, You move about hidden as the very Self within all beings; bewildered by You, creatures cannot see You, even though You are the one who sees them.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.11.16.5)

याः काश्च भूमौ दिवि वै रसायां विभूतयो दिक्षु महाविभूते । ता मह्यमाख्याह्यनुभावितास्ते नमामि ते तीर्थपदाङ्घ्रिपद्मम् ॥ 16.5 ॥

yāḥ kāś ca bhūmau divi vai rasāyāṁ vibhūtayo dikṣu mahā-vibhūte tā mahyam ākhyāhy anubhāvitās te namāmi te tīrtha-padāṅghri-padmam

O Lord of infinite glories, whatever manifestations of Your power exist on earth, in heaven, in the netherworld, and in every direction, kindly reveal these to me. I bow to Your lotus feet, which are the very source of all sacred places.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.11.16.6)

श्रीभगवानुवाच एवमेतदहं पृष्टः प्रश्नं प्रश्नविदां वर । युयुत्सुना विनशने सपत्नैरर्जुनेन वै ॥ 16.6 ॥

śrī-bhagavān uvāca evam etad ahaṁ pṛṣṭaḥ praśnaṁ praśna-vidāṁ vara yuyutsunā vinaśane sapatnair arjunena vai

The Blessed Lord said: O best of those skilled in questioning, I was once asked this same question by Arjuna, who was eager to fight his rivals at Kurukshetra.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.11.16.7)

ज्ञात्वा ज्ञातिवधं गर्ह्यमधर्मं राज्यहेतुकम् । ततो निवृत्तो हन्ताहं हतोऽयमिति लौकिकः ॥ 16.7 ॥

jñātvā jñāti-vadhaṁ garhyam adharmaṁ rājya-hetukam tato nivṛtto hantāhaṁ hato ’yam iti laukikaḥ

Recognizing that killing his own kinsmen for the sake of a kingdom would be a shameful, irreligious act, Arjuna, thinking in worldly terms — 'I shall be the killer, and he the slain' — withdrew from that battle.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.11.16.8)

स तदा पुरुषव्याघ्रो युक्त्या मे प्रतिबोधितः । अभ्यभाषत मामेवं यथा त्वं रणमूर्धनि ॥ 16.8 ॥

sa tadā puruṣa-vyāghro yuktyā me pratibodhitaḥ abhyabhāṣata mām evaṁ yathā tvaṁ raṇa-mūrdhani

That tiger among men, then enlightened by Me through reasoning, addressed Me in the very front of the battle in the same way you now address Me.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.11.16.9)

अहमात्मोद्धवामीषां भूतानां सुहृदीश्वरः । अहं सर्वाणि भूतानि तेषां स्थित्युद्भवाप्ययः ॥ 16.9 ॥

aham ātmoddhavāmīṣāṁ bhūtānāṁ suhṛd īśvaraḥ ahaṁ sarvāṇi bhūtāni teṣāṁ sthity-udbhavāpyayaḥ

I, Uddhava, am the very Self of all these beings, their well-wisher and controller; I am all beings, and I am their maintenance, origin and dissolution as well.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.11.16.10)

अहं गतिर्गतिमतां कालः कलयतामहम् । गुणानां चाप्यहं साम्यं गुणिन्यौत्पत्तिको गुणः ॥ 16.10 ॥

ahaṁ gatir gatimatāṁ kālaḥ kalayatām aham gunāṇāṁ cāpy ahaṁ sāmyaṁ guṇiny autpattiko guṇaḥ

I am the goal among those who seek a goal, and time among those who reckon; I am the equilibrium among the modes, and I am the natural quality inherent in one who possesses qualities.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.11.16.11)

गुणिनामप्यहं सूत्रं महतां च महानहम् । सूक्ष्माणामप्यहं जीवो दुर्जयानामहं मनः ॥ 16.11 ॥

guṇinām apy ahaṁ sūtraṁ mahatāṁ ca mahān aham sūkṣmāṇām apy ahaṁ jīvo durjayānām ahaṁ manaḥ

Among things possessing qualities I am the primal thread, the mahat-tattva, and among great things I am the total cosmic creation; among subtle things I am the jiva, and among things hard to conquer I am the mind.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.11.16.12)

हिरण्यगर्भो वेदानां मन्त्राणां प्रणवस्त्रिवृत् । अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि पदानिच्छन्दसामहम् ॥ 16.12 ॥

hiraṇyagarbho vedānāṁ mantrāṇāṁ praṇavas tri-vṛt akṣarāṇām a-kāro ’smi padāni cchandasām aham

Among the Vedas I am Hiranyagarbha, Brahma; among mantras I am the threefold Om; among letters I am the letter 'a'; and among meters I am Gayatri.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.11.16.13)

इन्द्रोऽहं सर्वदेवानां वसूनामस्मि हव्यवाट् । आदित्यानामहं विष्णू रुद्राणां नीललोहितः ॥ 16.13 ॥

indro ’haṁ sarva-devānāṁ vasūnām asmi havya-vāṭ ādityānām ahaṁ viṣṇū rudrāṇāṁ nīla-lohitaḥ

Among all the gods I am Indra; among the Vasus I am Agni, the carrier of oblations; among the Adityas I am Vishnu; and among the Rudras I am Shiva of the dark-red hue.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.11.16.14)

ब्रह्मर्षीणां भृगुरहं राजर्षीणामहं मनुः । देवर्षीणां नारदोऽहं हविर्धान्यस्मि धेनुषु ॥ 16.14 ॥

brahmarṣīṇāṁ bhṛgur ahaṁ rājarṣīṇām ahaṁ manuḥ devarṣīṇāṁ nārado ’haṁ havirdhāny asmi dhenuṣu

Among the brahma-rishis I am Bhrigu; among the raja-rishis I am Manu; among the deva-rishis I am Narada; and among cows I am the wish-fulfilling cow, giver of oblations.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.11.16.15)

सिद्धेश्वराणां कपिलः सुपर्णोऽहं पतत्रिणाम् । प्रजापतीनां दक्षोऽहं पितृणामहमर्यमा ॥ 16.15 ॥

siddheśvarāṇāṁ kapilaḥ suparṇo ’haṁ patatriṇām prajāpatīnāṁ dakṣo ’haṁ pitṝṇām aham aryamā

Among the lords of the perfected beings I am Kapila; among birds I am Garuda; among the progenitors I am Daksha; and among the forefathers I am Aryama.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.11.16.16)

मां विद्ध्युद्धव दैत्यानां प्रह्लादमसुरेश्वरम् । सोमं नक्षत्रौषधीनां धनेशं यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥ 16.16 ॥

māṁ viddhy uddhava daityānāṁ prahlādam asureśvaram somaṁ nakṣatrauṣadhīnāṁ dhaneśaṁ yakṣa-rakṣasām

Know Me, Uddhava, to be Prahlada, the lord of the asuras, among the Daityas; the moon among the stars and herbs; and Kubera, the lord of wealth, among the Yakshas and Rakshasas.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.11.16.17)

ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणां यादसां वरुणं प्रभुम् । तपतां द्युमतां सूर्यं मनुष्याणां च भूपतिम् ॥ 16.17 ॥

airāvataṁ gajendrāṇāṁ yādasāṁ varuṇaṁ prabhum tapatāṁ dyumatāṁ sūryaṁ manuṣyāṇāṁ ca bhū-patim

Among lordly elephants I am Airavata; among aquatic beings I am the ruler Varuna; among all that heats and shines I am the sun; and among men I am the king.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.11.16.18)

उच्चैःश्रवास्तुरङ्गाणां धातूनामस्मि काञ्चनम् । यमः संयमतां चाहम् सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकिः ॥ 16.18 ॥

uccaiḥśravās turaṅgāṇāṁ dhātūnām asmi kāñcanam yamaḥ saṁyamatāṁ cāham sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ

Among horses I am Uchchaihshrava; among metals I am gold; among those who administer restraint I am Yama; and among serpents I am Vasuki.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.11.16.19)

नागेन्द्राणामनन्तोऽहं मृगेन्द्रः शृङ्गिदंष्ट्रिणाम् । आश्रमाणामहं तुर्यो वर्णानां प्रथमोऽनघ ॥ 16.19 ॥

nāgendrāṇām ananto ’haṁ mṛgendraḥ śṛṅgi-daṁṣṭriṇām āśramāṇām ahaṁ turyo varṇānāṁ prathamo ’nagha

O sinless one, among the great serpents I am Ananta; among horned and fanged beasts I am the lion; among the ashramas I am the fourth, sannyasa; and among the varnas I am the first, the brahmanas.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.11.16.20)

तीर्थानां स्रोतसां गङ्गा समुद्रः सरसामहम् । आयुधानां धनुरहं त्रिपुरघ्नो धनुष्मताम् ॥ 16.20 ॥

tīrthānāṁ srotasāṁ gaṅgā samudraḥ sarasām aham āyudhānāṁ dhanur ahaṁ tripura-ghno dhanuṣmatām

Among sacred flowing waters I am the Ganga; among bodies of water I am the ocean; among weapons I am the bow; and among bow-wielders I am the destroyer of Tripura, Shiva.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.11.16.21)

धिष्ण्यानामस्म्यहं मेरुर्गहनानां हिमालयः । वनस्पतीनामश्वत्थ ओषधीनामहं यवः ॥ 16.21 ॥

dhiṣṇyānām asmy ahaṁ merur gahanānāṁ himālayaḥ vanaspatīnām aśvattha oṣadhīnām ahaṁ yavaḥ

Among mountains I am Meru; among impenetrable places I am the Himalayas; among trees I am the sacred fig; and among crops I am barley.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.11.16.22)

पुरोधसां वसिष्ठोऽहं ब्रह्मिष्ठानां बृहस्पतिः । स्कन्दोऽहं सर्वसेनान्यामग्रण्यां भगवानजः ॥ 16.22 ॥

purodhasāṁ vasiṣṭho ’haṁ brahmiṣṭhānāṁ bṛhaspatiḥ skando ’haṁ sarva-senānyām agraṇyāṁ bhagavān ajaḥ

Among priests I am Vasishtha; among those most learned in Brahman I am Brihaspati; among all commanders of armies I am Skanda, Kartikeya; and among those foremost in spiritual advancement I am Bhagavan Brahma.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.11.16.23)

यज्ञानां ब्रह्मयज्ञोऽहं व्रतानामविहिंसनम् । वाय्वग्न्यर्काम्बुवागात्मा शुचीनामप्यहं शुचिः ॥ 16.23 ॥

yajñānāṁ brahma-yajño ’haṁ vratānām avihiṁsanam vāyv-agny-arkāmbu-vāg-ātmā śucīnām apy ahaṁ śuciḥ

Among sacrifices I am the study of scripture; among vows I am nonviolence; I am wind, fire, sun, water and speech themselves; and among purifying things I am purity itself.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.11.16.24)

योगानामात्मसंरोधो मन्त्रोऽस्मि विजिगीषताम् । आन्वीक्षिकी कौशलानां विकल्पः ख्यातिवादिनाम् ॥ 16.24 ॥

yogānām ātma-saṁrodho mantro ’smi vijigīṣatām ānvīkṣikī kauśalānāṁ vikalpaḥ khyāti-vādinām

Among the stages of yoga I am the final restraint of the self; among those seeking victory I am sound counsel; among skills I am the science of self-inquiry; and among expounders of theoretical philosophy I am the diversity of viewpoints itself.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.11.16.25)

स्त्रीणां तु शतरूपाहं पुंसां स्वायम्भुवो मनुः । नारायणो मुनीनां च कुमारो ब्रह्मचारिणाम् ॥ 16.25 ॥

strīṇāṁ tu śatarūpāhaṁ puṁsāṁ svāyambhuvo manuḥ nārāyaṇo munīnāṁ ca kumāro brahmacāriṇām

Among women I am Shatarupa; among men I am Svayambhuva Manu; among sages I am Narayana; and among celibate students I am Sanat-kumara.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.11.16.26)

धर्माणामस्मि संन्यासः क्षेमाणामबहिर्मतिः । गुह्यानां सुनृतं मौनं मिथुनानामजस्त्वहम् ॥ 16.26 ॥

dharmāṇām asmi sannyāsaḥ kṣemāṇām abahir-matiḥ guhyānāṁ su-nṛtaṁ maunaṁ mithunānām ajas tv aham

Among religious paths I am renunciation; among sources of true security I am inward-turned awareness; among secret virtues I am pleasant truthfulness and silence; and among mating pairs I am Brahma, the unborn.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.11.16.27)

संवत्सरोऽस्म्यनिमिषामृतूनां मधुमाधवौ । मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहं नक्षत्राणां तथाभिजित् ॥ 16.27 ॥

saṁvatsaro ’smy animiṣām ṛtūnāṁ madhu-mādhavau māsānāṁ mārgaśīrṣo ’haṁ nakṣatrāṇāṁ tathābhijit

Among the divisions of unblinking time I am the year; among seasons I am spring, Madhu and Madhava; among months I am Margashirsha; and among constellations I am Abhijit.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.11.16.28)

अहं युगानां च कृतं धीराणां देवलोऽसितः । द्वैपायनोऽस्मि व्यासानां कवीनां काव्य आत्मवान् ॥ 16.28 ॥

ahaṁ yugānāṁ ca kṛtaṁ dhīrāṇāṁ devalo ’sitaḥ dvaipāyano ’smi vyāsānāṁ kavīnāṁ kāvya ātmavān

Among the yugas I am Satya-yuga; among the steadfast I am Devala and Asita; among the compilers of the Vedas I am Dvaipayana Vyasa; and among wise poets I am the self-possessed Ushanas.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.11.16.29)

वासुदेवो भगवतां त्वं तु भागवतेष्वहम् । किम्पुरुषाणां हनुमान् विद्याध्राणां सुदर्शनः ॥ 16.29 ॥

vāsudevo bhagavatāṁ tvaṁ tu bhāgavateṣv aham kimpuruṣānāṁ hanumān vidyādhrāṇāṁ sudarśanaḥ

Among those called Bhagavan I am Vasudeva; and among devotees, you, Uddhava, represent Me. Among the Kimpurushas I am Hanuman; and among the Vidyadharas I am Sudarshana.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.11.16.30)

रत्नानां पद्मरागोऽस्मि पद्मकोशः सुपेशसाम् । कुशोऽस्मि दर्भजातीनां गव्यमाज्यं हविःष्वहम् ॥ 16.30 ॥

ratnānāṁ padma-rāgo ’smi padma-kośaḥ su-peśasām kuśo ’smi darbha-jātīnāṁ gavyam ājyaṁ haviḥṣv aham

Among jewels I am the ruby; among beautiful things I am the lotus cup; among the darbha grasses I am kusha; and among oblations I am the ghee that comes from the cow.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.11.16.31)

व्यवसायिनामहं लक्ष्मीः कितवानां छलग्रहः । तितिक्षास्मि तितिक्षूणां सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम् ॥ 16.31 ॥

vyavasāyinām ahaṁ lakṣmīḥ kitavānāṁ chala-grahaḥ titikṣāsmi titikṣūṇāṁ sattvaṁ sattvavatām aham

Among the enterprising I am prosperity; among gamblers I am the trickery of the dice; among the forbearing I am forbearance itself; and among those established in goodness I am that very goodness.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.11.16.32)

ओजः सहो बलवतां कर्माहं विद्धि सात्वताम् । सात्वतां नवमूर्तीनामादिमूर्तिरहं परा ॥ 16.32 ॥

ojaḥ saho balavatāṁ karmāhaṁ viddhi sātvatām sātvatāṁ nava-mūrtīnām ādi-mūrtir ahaṁ parā

Among the strong, know Me to be vigor and endurance, and among My devotees I am their very devotional activity. Among the nine forms in which My devotees worship Me, I am the original and supreme form.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.11.16.33)

विश्वावसुः पूर्वचित्तिर्गन्धर्वाप्सरसामहम् । भूधराणामहं स्थैर्यं गन्धमात्रमहं भुवः ॥ 16.33 ॥

viśvāvasuḥ pūrvacittir gandharvāpsarasām aham bhūdharāṇām ahaṁ sthairyaṁ gandha-mātram ahaṁ bhuvaḥ

Among Gandharvas I am Vishvavasu, and among Apsaras I am Purvachitti; among mountains I am steadiness itself, and among the earth's qualities I am its very fragrance.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.11.16.34)

अपां रसश्च परमस्तेजिष्ठानां विभावसुः । प्रभा सूर्येन्दुताराणां शब्दोऽहं नभसः परः ॥ 16.34 ॥

apāṁ rasaś ca paramas tejiṣṭhānāṁ vibhāvasuḥ prabhā sūryendu-tārāṇāṁ śabdo ’haṁ nabhasaḥ paraḥ

I am the supreme taste of water, and among brilliant things I am fire; I am the radiance of the sun, moon and stars, and I am the transcendental sound pervading the sky.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.11.16.35)

ब्रह्मण्यानां बलिरहं वीराणामहमर्जुनः । भूतानां स्थितिरुत्पत्तिरहं वै प्रतिसङ्क्रमः ॥ 16.35 ॥

brahmaṇyānāṁ balir ahaṁ vīrāṇām aham arjunaḥ bhūtānāṁ sthitir utpattir ahaṁ vai pratisaṅkramaḥ

Among those devoted to brahminical culture I am Bali; among heroes I am Arjuna; and I am indeed the maintenance, origin and final dissolution of all beings.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.11.16.36)

गत्युक्त्युत्सर्गोपादानमानन्दस्पर्शलक्षणम् । आस्वादश्रुत्यवघ्राणमहं सर्वेन्द्रियेन्द्रियम् ॥ 16.36 ॥

gaty-ukty-utsargopādānam ānanda-sparśa-lakṣanam āsvāda-śruty-avaghrāṇam ahaṁ sarvendriyendriyam

I am movement, speech, evacuation and grasping; I am the very characteristic of pleasurable touch; I am taste, hearing and smell — I am the very faculty within every sense.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.11.16.37)

पृथिवी वायुराकाश आपो ज्योतिरहं महान् । विकारः पुरुषोऽव्यक्तं रजः सत्त्वं तमः परम् । अहमेतत्प्रसङ्ख्यानं ज्ञानं तत्त्वविनिश्चयः ॥ 16.37 ॥

pṛthivī vāyur ākāśa āpo jyotir ahaṁ mahān vikāraḥ puruṣo ’vyaktaṁ rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaḥ param aham etat prasaṅkhyānaṁ jñānaṁ tattva-viniścayaḥ

I am earth, air, sky, water and fire; I am the mahat-tattva, the ego-transformation, the individual soul, the unmanifest, passion, goodness, ignorance and the Transcendence beyond them. I am this entire analytical enumeration, the knowledge itself, and the firm conviction of truth that arises from it.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.11.16.38)

मयेश्वरेण जीवेन गुणेन गुणिना विना । सर्वात्मनापि सर्वेण न भावो विद्यते क्वचित् ॥ 16.38 ॥

mayeśvareṇa jīvena guṇena guṇinā vinā sarvātmanāpi sarveṇa na bhāvo vidyate kvacit

Without Me, the Supreme Lord, the individual soul, the qualities and the possessor of qualities, no existence of anything, in any manner or in its entirety, is possible anywhere.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.11.16.39)

सङ्ख्यानं परमाणूनां कालेन क्रियते मया । न तथा मे विभूतीनां सृजतोऽण्डानि कोटिशः ॥ 16.39 ॥

saṅkhyānaṁ paramāṇūnāṁ kālena kriyate mayā na tathā me vibhūtīnāṁ sṛjato ’ṇḍāni koṭiśaḥ

I might, in time, count all the atoms in existence, but I could never so count My own glories, by which I create countless millions of universes.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.11.16.40)

तेजः श्रीः कीर्तिरैश्वर्यं ह्रीस्त्यागः सौभगं भगः । वीर्यं तितिक्षा विज्ञानं यत्र यत्र स मेंऽशकः ॥ 16.40 ॥

tejaḥ śrīḥ kīrtir aiśvaryaṁ hrīs tyāgaḥ saubhagaṁ bhagaḥ vīryaṁ titikṣā vijñānaṁ yatra yatra sa me ’ṁśakaḥ

Wherever there is splendor, beauty, fame, opulence, modesty, renunciation, good fortune, prosperity, valor, forbearance or true wisdom, know that to be but a fragment of My own glory.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.11.16.41)

एतास्ते कीर्तिताः सर्वाः सङ्क्षेपेण विभूतयः । मनोविकारा एवैते यथा वाचाभिधीयते ॥ 16.41 ॥

etās te kīrtitāḥ sarvāḥ saṅkṣepeṇa vibhūtayaḥ mano-vikārā evaite yathā vācābhidhīyate

I have thus briefly described to you all these My manifest glories; they are, in truth, but modifications perceived by the mind, described in whatever way words allow.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.11.16.42)

वाचं यच्छ मनो यच्छ प्राणान् यच्छेन्द्रियाणि च । आत्मानमात्मना यच्छ न भूयः कल्पसेऽध्वने ॥ 16.42 ॥

vācaṁ yaccha mano yaccha prāṇān yacchedriyāṇi ca ātmānam ātmanā yaccha na bhūyaḥ kalpase ’dhvane

Therefore restrain your speech, restrain your mind, restrain the life-breath and the senses; restrain the self by the self — then you shall never again be subject to the path of worldly rebirth.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.11.16.43)

यो वै वाङ्मनसी सम्यगसंयच्छन् धिया यतिः । तस्य व्रतं तपो दानं स्रवत्यामघटाम्बुवत् ॥ 16.43 ॥

yo vai vāṅ-manasī saṁyag asaṁyacchan dhiyā yatiḥ tasya vrataṁ tapo dānaṁ sravaty āma-ghaṭāmbu-vat

A renunciant who does not properly restrain speech and mind through his intelligence sees his vows, austerities and charity leak away, just as water leaks from an unfired clay pot.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.11.16.44)

तस्माद्वचोमनःप्राणान् नियच्छेन्मत्परायणः । मद्भक्तियुक्तया बुद्ध्या ततः परिसमाप्यते ॥ 16.44 ॥

tasmād vaco manaḥ prāṇān niyacchen mat-parāyaṇaḥ mad-bhakti-yuktayā buddhyā tataḥ parisamāpyate

Therefore, one devoted to Me should restrain speech, mind and the life-breath; and then, through intelligence joined with devotion to Me, the goal of life is fully accomplished.
