Skandha 11 · Chapter 6

The Prayers of Brahma and the Gods; Uddhava's Plea to Accompany Krishna

Chapter 5All chaptersChapter 7

Verse 1 (bhagavata.11.6.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca atha brahmātma-jaiḥ devaiḥ prajeśair āvṛto ’bhyagāt bhavaś ca bhūta-bhavyeśo yayau bhūta-gaṇair vṛtaḥ

Shri Shuka said: Then Brahma, surrounded by his sons, the gods, and the progenitors of creation, set off for Dvaraka; and Shiva, the bestower of good fortune upon all beings, also went, surrounded by hordes of his ghostly attendants.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.11.6.2)

indro marudbhir bhagavān ādityā vasavo ’śvinau ṛbhavo ’ṅgiraso rudrā viśve sādhyāś ca devatāḥ

Indra together with the Maruts, the Adityas, the Vasus, the two Ashvins, the Ribhus, the Angirasas, the Rudras, and the Vishvadevas and Sadhya gods —

Verse 3 (bhagavata.11.6.3)

gandharvāpsaraso nāgāḥ siddha-cāraṇa-guhyakāḥ ṛṣayaḥ pitaraś caiva sa-vidyādhara-kinnarāḥ

the Gandharvas, Apsarases, Nagas, Siddhas, Charanas, Guhyakas, the sages, the forefathers, together with the Vidyadharas and Kinnaras —

Verse 4 (bhagavata.11.6.4)

dvārakām upasañjagmuḥ sarve kṛṣṇa-didṛkṣavaḥ vapuṣā yena bhagavān nara-loka-manoramaḥ yaśo vitene lokeṣu sarva-loka-malāpaham

— all of them, longing to see Krishna, came to Dvaraka — He whose form, enchanting to the people of this world, had spread His fame through all the worlds, fame that removes the impurity of every realm.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.11.6.5)

tasyāṁ vibhrājamānāyāṁ samṛddhāyāṁ maharddhibhiḥ vyacakṣatāvitṛptākṣāḥ kṛṣṇam adbhuta-darśanam

In that resplendent city, rich with great opulence, they beheld Krishna, wondrous to behold, their eyes never sated.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.11.6.6)

svargodyānopagair mālyaiś chādayanto yudūttamam gīrbhiś citra-padārthābhis tuṣṭuvur jagad-īśvaram

Covering the best of the Yadus with garlands brought from the gardens of heaven, they praised the Lord of the universe with words of wondrous meaning.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.11.6.7)

śrī-devā ūcuḥ natāḥ sma te nātha padāravindaṁ buddhīndriya-prāṇa-mano-vacobhiḥ yac cintyate ’ntar hṛdi bhāva-yuktair mumukṣubhiḥ karma-mayoru-pāśāt

The gods said: O Lord, with intellect, senses, breath, mind, and speech we bow to Your lotus feet — those feet which, longing for liberation from the great bondage of works, devout souls contemplate within the heart.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.11.6.8)

tvaṁ māyayā tri-guṇayātmani durvibhāvyaṁ vyaktaṁ sṛjasy avasi lumpasi tad-guṇa-sthaḥ naitair bhavān ajita karmabhir ajyate vai yat sve sukhe ’vyavahite ’bhirato ’navadyaḥ

Through Your maya of three modes You create, sustain, and destroy within Yourself this manifest world, inconceivable though it be, seemingly present in those modes; yet You, O unconquered one, are never bound by these acts, for You, faultless, remain ever absorbed in Your own unbroken bliss.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.11.6.9)

śuddhir nṛṇāṁ na tu tatheḍya durāśayānāṁ vidyā-śrutādhyayana-dāna-tapaḥ-kriyābhiḥ sattvātmanām ṛṣabha te yaśasi pravṛddha- sac-chraddhayā śravaṇa-sambhṛtayā yathā syāt

O worshipable one, purification of those whose minds are corrupt does not come through knowledge, Vedic study, charity, penance, or ritual, as it comes, O greatest, for those of pure heart, through faith matured by hearing Your glories.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.11.6.10)

syān nas tavāṅghrir aśubhāśaya-dhūmaketuḥ kṣemāya yo munibhir ārdra-hṛdohyamānaḥ yaḥ sātvataiḥ sama-vibhūtaya ātmavadbhir vyūhe ’rcitaḥ savanaśaḥ svar-atikramāya

May Your feet, borne by sages with melted hearts for their true good, and worshiped by self-controlled devotees in Your fourfold form at each turn of the day, that they may pass beyond heaven itself to share Your own glory — may those feet be to us the fire that consumes every inauspicious desire.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.11.6.11)

yaś cintyate prayata-pāṇibhir adhvarāgnau trayyā nirukta-vidhineśa havir gṛhītvā adhyātma-yoga uta yogibhir ātma-māyāṁ jijñāsubhiḥ parama-bhāgavataiḥ parīṣṭaḥ

O Lord, You are meditated upon by those with folded hands who, taking up the oblation, offer it into the sacrificial fire according to the rite laid down by the three Vedas and the Nirukta; and You are sought, in the yoga of the self, by yogis wishing to know Your illusive power, and are perfectly worshiped by the supreme devotees.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.11.6.12)

paryuṣṭayā tava vibho vana-mālayeyaṁ saṁspārdhinī bhagavatī pratipatnī-vac chrīḥ yaḥ su-praṇītam amuyārhaṇam ādadan no bhūyāt sadāṅghrir aśubhāśaya-dhūmaketuḥ

O almighty one, over this withered forest-garland of Yours the goddess Shri herself grows jealous, as a rival wife would; yet You accept this offering, well-intended, from us — may Your feet ever be the fire that consumes our impure desires.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.11.6.13)

ketus tri-vikrama-yutas tri-patat-patāko yas te bhayābhaya-karo ’sura-deva-camvoḥ svargāya sādhuṣu khaleṣv itarāya bhūman padaḥ punātu bhagavan bhajatām aghaṁ naḥ

O infinite Lord, that same foot, a very banner in Your three great strides, its flag falling across all three worlds, which brings fear to the army of demons and fearlessness to the army of gods — bestowing heaven upon the virtuous and its opposite upon the wicked — may that foot, O Lord, purify the sins of us who worship You.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.11.6.14)

nasy ota-gāva iva yasya vaśe bhavanti brahmādayas tanu-bhṛto mithur ardyamānāḥ kālasya te prakṛti-pūruṣayoḥ parasya śaṁ nas tanotu caraṇaḥ puruṣottamasya

Under whose sway even Brahma and other embodied beings exist, like oxen led by a rope through the nose, tormenting one another — may the foot of that Time, that Supreme Person beyond both nature and soul, extend to us its blessing.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.11.6.15)

asyāsi hetur udaya-sthiti-saṁyamānām avyakta-jīva-mahatām api kālam āhuḥ so ’yaṁ tri-ṇābhir akhilāpacaye pravṛttaḥ kālo gabhīra-raya uttama-pūruṣas tvam

You are the cause of the rise, maintenance, and withdrawal of the unmanifest, the individual souls, and the mahat-tattva alike; You are called Time itself — that same Time, its wheel of three naves, engaged in the diminishing of all things, its motion unfathomable — You are the Supreme Person.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.11.6.16)

tvattaḥ pumān samadhigamya yayāsya vīryaṁ dhatte mahāntam iva garbham amogha-vīryaḥ so ’yaṁ tayānugata ātmana āṇḍa-kośaṁ haimaṁ sasarja bahir āvaraṇair upetam

From You the cosmic Person receives that potency by which, His power never spent, He implants, as it were, the great mahat-tattva as an embryo in material nature; and that mahat-tattva, joined with nature, brought forth from itself the golden cosmic egg, wrapped about with its many coverings.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.11.6.17)

tat tasthūṣaś ca jagataś ca bhavān adhīśo yan māyayottha-guṇa-vikriyayopanītān arthāñ juṣann api hṛṣīka-pate na lipto ye ’nye svataḥ parihṛtād api bibhyati sma

Thus You are the supreme ruler of all that is still and all that moves; O master of the senses, though You partake of the sense-objects brought forth by the transformation of nature's modes, You are never tainted — while others fear even what they have themselves renounced.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.11.6.18)

smāyāvaloka-lava-darśita-bhāva-hāri- bhrū-maṇḍala-prahita-saurata-mantra-śauṇḍaiḥ patnyas tu ṣoḍaśa-sahasram anaṅga-bāṇair yasyendriyaṁ vimathituṁ karaṇair na vibhvyaḥ

Even Your sixteen thousand queens, with the fleeting glance of a smile revealing their charming feelings, with the arched brow that sends its bold message of love — even they, with all of Cupid's arrows and every device, are unable to stir Your senses.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.11.6.19)

vibhvyas tavāmṛta-kathoda-vahās tri-lokyāḥ pādāvane-ja-saritaḥ śamalāni hantum ānuśravaṁ śrutibhir aṅghri-jam aṅga-saṅgais tīrtha-dvayaṁ śuci-ṣadas ta upaspṛśanti

Able to destroy the taints of the three worlds are the rivers of Your nectarean tales, and the rivers born from the washing of Your feet; those seeking purity approach the one through the ears, by hearing, and the other by bodily contact — these twin holy places of Yours.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.11.6.20)

śrī-bādarāyaṇir uvāca ity abhiṣṭūya vibudhaiḥ seśaḥ śata-dhṛtir harim abhyabhāṣata govindaṁ praṇamyāmbaram āśritaḥ

Shri Shuka said: Having thus praised Him along with the gods, Brahma, together with Shiva, then, positioned in the sky, bowed and spoke to Govinda.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.11.6.21)

śrī-brahmovāca bhūmer bhārāvatārāya purā vijñāpitaḥ prabho tvam asmābhir aśeṣātman tat tathaivopapāditam

Shri Brahma said: O Lord, we earlier petitioned You to lighten the earth's burden; O Soul without limit, that request has been fulfilled exactly as we asked.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.11.6.22)

dharmaś ca sthāpitaḥ satsu satya-sandheṣu vai tvayā kīrtiś ca dikṣu vikṣiptā sarva-loka-malāpahā

You have established dharma among the pious, those true to their word; and You have spread Your fame in all directions, fame that removes the impurity of every world.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.11.6.23)

avatīrya yador vaṁśe bibhrad rūpam anuttamam karmāṇy uddāma-vṛttāni hitāya jagato ’kṛthāḥ

Descending into the dynasty of Yadu, bearing a form beyond compare, You have performed, for the world's benefit, deeds of boundless magnanimity.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.11.6.24)

yāni te caritānīśa manuṣyāḥ sādhavaḥ kalau śṛṇvantaḥ kīrtayantaś ca tariṣyanty añjasā tamaḥ

O Lord, those saintly men in the Age of Kali who hear and chant Your deeds will easily cross over the darkness of that age.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.11.6.25)

yadu-vaṁśe ’vatīrṇasya bhavataḥ puruṣottama śarac-chataṁ vyatīyāya pañca-viṁśādhikaṁ prabho

O Supreme Person, O Lord, since Your descent into the Yadu dynasty, one hundred and twenty-five autumns have now passed.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.11.6.26)

nādhunā te ’khilādhāra deva-kāryāvaśeṣitam kulaṁ ca vipra-śāpena naṣṭa-prāyam abhūd idam

O foundation of everything, no task remains now for You to accomplish on the gods' behalf; and this Your dynasty, through the brahmanas' curse, has already all but perished.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.11.6.27)

tataḥ sva-dhāma paramaṁ viśasva yadi manyase sa-lokāl loka-pālān naḥ pāhi vaikuṇṭha-kiṅkarān

If You are so inclined, then enter now Your own supreme abode; and, O Vaikuntha, continue to protect us, Your servants, together with our worlds and their guardians.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.11.6.28)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca avadhāritam etan me yad āttha vibudheśvara kṛtaṁ vaḥ kāryam akhilaṁ bhūmer bhāro ’vatāritaḥ

The Lord said: What you have said, O lord of the gods, I have understood. Your entire task is done; the burden of the earth has been removed.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.11.6.29)

tad idaṁ yādava-kulaṁ vīrya-śaurya-śriyoddhatam lokaṁ jighṛkṣad ruddhaṁ me velayeva mahārṇavaḥ

This very Yadu dynasty, swollen with power, valor, and splendor, and threatening to engulf the world, I have held in check, as the shore holds back the great ocean.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.11.6.30)

yady asaṁhṛtya dṛptānāṁ yadūnāṁ vipulaṁ kulam gantāsmy anena loko ’yam udvelena vinaṅkṣyati

If I depart without first withdrawing this vast, arrogant dynasty of the Yadus, this world will be destroyed by its overflow, like a flood breaking its banks.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.11.6.31)

idānīṁ nāśa ārabdhaḥ kulasya dvija-śāpa-jaḥ yāsyāmi bhavanaṁ brahmann etad-ante tavānagha

Even now, the destruction of this dynasty, born of the brahmanas' curse, has begun; O sinless Brahma, when it is complete, I shall come to your abode.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.11.6.32)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity ukto loka-nāthena svayam-bhūḥ praṇipatya tam saha deva-gaṇair devaḥ sva-dhāma samapadyata

Shri Shuka said: Thus addressed by the Lord of the universe, the self-born Brahma bowed down to Him, and, together with the hosts of gods, that great one returned to his own abode.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.11.6.33)

atha tasyāṁ mahotpātān dvāravatyāṁ samutthitān vilokya bhagavān āha yadu-vṛddhān samāgatān

Thereafter, seeing that great calamities had arisen in that city of Dvaraka, the Lord spoke to the assembled elders of the Yadus.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.11.6.34)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca ete vai su-mahotpātā vyuttiṣṭhantīha sarvataḥ śāpaś ca naḥ kulasyāsīd brāhmaṇebhyo duratyayaḥ

The Lord said: These very great calamities are rising up on every side; and our dynasty has received a curse from the brahmanas that cannot be overcome.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.11.6.35)

na vastavyam ihāsmābhir jijīviṣubhir āryakāḥ prabhāsaṁ su-mahat-puṇyaṁ yāsyāmo ’dyaiva mā ciram

O venerable elders, if we wish to live, we should not remain here; let us go this very day, without delay, to the most sacred Prabhasa.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.11.6.36)

yatra snātvā dakṣa-śāpād gṛhīto yakṣmaṇodu-rāṭ vimuktaḥ kilbiṣāt sadyo bheje bhūyaḥ kalodayam

There, by bathing, the king of stars, seized by consumption through Daksha's curse, was at once freed from his sin and again took up the waxing of his phases.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.11.6.37)

vayaṁ ca tasminn āplutya tarpayitvā pitṝn surān bhojayitvoṣijo viprān nānā-guṇavatāndhasā

We too, bathing there, satisfying the ancestors and gods with offerings, feeding the worshipful brahmanas with foods of every fine quality —

Verse 38 (bhagavata.11.6.38)

teṣu dānāni pātreṣu śraddhayoptvā mahānti vai vṛjināni tariṣyāmo dānair naubhir ivārṇavam

and faithfully sowing gifts in them as worthy recipients, shall cross over these great dangers by charity, as one crosses the ocean by boats.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.11.6.39)

śrī-śuka uvāca evaṁ bhagavatādiṣṭā yādavāḥ kuru-nandana gantuṁ kṛta-dhiyas tīrthaṁ syandanān samayūyujan

Shri Shuka said: O favorite son of the Kurus, thus instructed by the Lord, the Yadavas, resolved to go to that holy place, yoked their horses to their chariots.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.11.6.40)

tan nirīkṣyoddhavo rājan śrutvā bhagavatoditam dṛṣṭvāriṣṭāni ghorāṇi nityaṁ kṛṣṇam anuvrataḥ

O King, seeing this, hearing what the Lord had said, and observing the terrible omens, Uddhava — ever a devoted follower of Krishna —

Verse 41 (bhagavata.11.6.41)

vivikta upasaṅgamya jagatām īśvareśvaram praṇamya śirasā pādau prāñjalis tam abhāṣata

approached Him privately, the Lord of the lords of the universe, and, bowing his head to His feet, hands folded, spoke to Him.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.11.6.42)

śrī-uddhava uvāca deva-deveśa yogeśa puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtana saṁhṛtyaitat kulaṁ nūnaṁ lokaṁ santyakṣyate bhavān vipra-śāpaṁ samartho ’pi pratyahan na yad īśvaraḥ

Shri Uddhava said: O Lord of lords, master of yoga, whose hearing and chanting alone confers merit — is it not so that, having withdrawn this dynasty, You are now about to leave this world altogether? For though fully capable, being the Supreme Lord, You did not counter the brahmanas' curse.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.11.6.43)

nāhaṁ tavāṅghri-kamalaṁ kṣaṇārdham api keśava tyaktuṁ samutsahe nātha sva-dhāma naya mām api

O Keshava, I cannot bear to give up Your lotus feet even for half an instant; O master, take me too to Your own abode.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.11.6.44)

tava vikrīḍitaṁ kṛṣṇa nṛṇāṁ parama-maṅgalam karṇa-pīyūṣam āsādya tyajanty anya-spṛhāṁ janāḥ

O Krishna, Your sportive deeds are the supreme good fortune for men; tasting them as nectar for the ears, people give up every other desire.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.11.6.45)

śayyāsanāṭana-sthāna- snāna-krīḍāśanādiṣu kathaṁ tvāṁ priyam ātmānaṁ vayaṁ bhaktās tyajema hi

How could we, Your devotees, ever give up You, dear as our own self, in lying down, sitting, walking, standing, bathing, sporting, eating, and all else?

Verse 46 (bhagavata.11.6.46)

tvayopabhukta-srag-gandha- vāso-’laṅkāra-carcitāḥ ucchiṣṭa-bhojino dāsās tava māyāṁ jayema hi

Adorned with the garlands, fragrances, garments, and ornaments already enjoyed by You, eating the remnants of Your meal, we Your servants shall surely conquer Your maya.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.11.6.47)

vāta-vasanā ya ṛṣayaḥ śramaṇā ūrdhra-manthinaḥ brahmākhyaṁ dhāma te yānti śāntāḥ sannyāsino ’malāḥ

Those sages clad only in the wind, ascetic, their seed drawn upward, peaceful, renounced, and pure — they attain the abode called Brahman.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.11.6.48)

vayaṁ tv iha mahā-yogin bhramantaḥ karma-vartmasu tvad-vārtayā tariṣyāmas tāvakair dustaraṁ tamaḥ

But we, O greatest of yogis, wandering here on the paths of works, shall cross, through discourse on You among Your own devotees, the darkness otherwise impossible to cross.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.11.6.49)

smarantaḥ kīrtayantas te kṛtāni gaditāni ca gaty-utsmitekṣaṇa-kṣveli yan nṛ-loka-viḍambanam

Remembering and singing of Your deeds and Your words, Your gait, Your smiling glances, and Your sportive pastimes — which so perfectly imitate the ways of human society.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.11.6.50)

śrī-śuka uvāca evaṁ vijñāpito rājan bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ ekāntinaṁ priyaṁ bhṛtyam uddhavaṁ samabhāṣata

Shri Shuka said: O King, thus entreated, the Supreme Lord, the son of Devaki, spoke at length to Uddhava, His dear and single-minded servant.
