Conversation Between Manu and Kardama

Chapter 20All chaptersChapter 22

Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.21.1)

vidura uvāca svāyambhuvasya ca manor vaṁśaḥ parama-sammataḥ kathyatāṁ bhagavan yatra maithunenaidhire prajāḥ

Vidura said: O worshipful sage, the lineage of Svayambhuva Manu is held in the highest regard, in which offspring increased through sexual union; kindly describe it to me.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.21.2)

priyavratottānapādau sutau svāyambhuvasya vai yathā-dharmaṁ jugupatuḥ sapta-dvīpavatīṁ mahīm

Priyavrata and Uttanapada, the two sons of Svayambhuva, ruled the earth of its seven continents in accordance with dharma.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.21.3)

tasya vai duhitā brahman devahūtīti viśrutā patnī prajāpater uktā kardamasya tvayānagha

His daughter, O brahmana, known by the name Devahuti, has, O sinless one, been spoken of by you as the wife of the Prajapati Kardama.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.21.4)

tasyāṁ sa vai mahā-yogī yuktāyāṁ yoga-lakṣaṇaiḥ sasarja katidhā vīryaṁ tan me śuśrūṣave vada

In her, who was endowed with all the marks of yogic perfection, how many times did that great yogi beget offspring? Tell me this, for I long to hear it.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.21.5)

rucir yo bhagavān brahman dakṣo vā brahmaṇaḥ sutaḥ yathā sasarja bhūtāni labdhvā bhāryāṁ ca mānavīm

O brahmana, tell me too how the worshipful Ruchi and Daksha, son of Brahma, having taken Manu's other daughters as their wives, begot their offspring.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.21.6)

maitreya uvāca prajāḥ sṛjeti bhagavān kardamo brahmaṇoditaḥ sarasvatyāṁ tapas tepe sahasrāṇāṁ samā daśa

Maitreya said: Commanded by Brahma, 'Beget offspring,' the worshipful Kardama practiced austerity on the bank of the Sarasvati for ten thousand years.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.21.7)

tataḥ samādhi-yuktena kriyā-yogena kardamaḥ samprapede hariṁ bhaktyā prapanna-varadāśuṣam

Then, through disciplined devotional practice joined with deep trance, Kardama, with devotion, took full shelter of Hari, the swift bestower of boons upon those who surrender to Him.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.21.8)

tāvat prasanno bhagavān puṣkarākṣaḥ kṛte yuge darśayām āsa taṁ kṣattaḥ śābdaṁ brahma dadhad vapuḥ

Then, in the Satya-yuga, O Kshatta, the lotus-eyed Lord, pleased with him, revealed Himself, bearing that form known only through the sound of the Veda.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.21.9)

sa taṁ virajam arkābhaṁ sita-padmotpala-srajam snigdha-nīlālaka-vrāta- vaktrābjaṁ virajo ’mbaram

He beheld Him: spotless, radiant as the sun, garlanded with white lotuses and lilies, His lotus face framed by glossy, dark curling locks, and clothed in immaculate raiment.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.21.10)

kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dharam śvetotpala-krīḍanakaṁ manaḥ-sparśa-smitekṣaṇam

Crowned, adorned with earrings, holding conch, discus, and mace, a white lotus flower for His plaything, His smiling glance touching the very heart.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.21.11)

vinyasta-caraṇāmbhojam aṁsa-deśe garutmataḥ dṛṣṭvā khe ’vasthitaṁ vakṣaḥ- śriyaṁ kaustubha-kandharam

He saw Him standing there in the sky, His lotus feet resting upon Garuda's shoulders, His chest radiant with splendor, the Kaustubha jewel gleaming at His throat.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.21.12)

jāta-harṣo ’patan mūrdhnā kṣitau labdha-manorathaḥ gīrbhis tv abhyagṛṇāt prīti- svabhāvātmā kṛtāñjaliḥ

Overcome with joy, his heart's desire now fulfilled, he fell to the ground, his head bowed low; and, his very being brimming with love, he praised Him aloud, hands folded in reverence.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.3.21.13)

ṛṣir uvāca juṣṭaṁ batādyākhila-sattva-rāśeḥ sāṁsiddhyam akṣṇos tava darśanān naḥ yad-darśanaṁ janmabhir īḍya sadbhir āśāsate yogino rūḍha-yogāḥ

The sage said: Ah, this very day the complete fulfillment of my eyes has come, in beholding You, O worshipful one, the reservoir of all existence, a sight that even accomplished yogis, perfected through many meritorious births, still long to attain.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.3.21.14)

ye māyayā te hata-medhasas tvat- pādāravindaṁ bhava-sindhu-potam upāsate kāma-lavāya teṣāṁ rāsīśa kāmān niraye ’pi ye syuḥ

Those whose intelligence has been stolen away by Your maya worship Your lotus feet, the very vessel that carries one across the ocean of worldly existence, only for some trifling pleasure, yet even that pleasure, obtainable even in hell, You Yourself grant them, O Lord.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.3.21.15)

tathā sa cāhaṁ parivoḍhu-kāmaḥ samāna-śīlāṁ gṛhamedha-dhenum upeyivān mūlam aśeṣa-mūlaṁ durāśayaḥ kāma-dughāṅghripasya

And so I too, desiring a wife of similar temperament, a veritable cow of plenty for householder life, driven by this unworthy longing, have come to the root of all roots, Your feet, which are like a wish-fulfilling tree.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.3.21.16)

prajāpates te vacasādhīśa tantyā lokaḥ kilāyaṁ kāma-hato ’nubaddhaḥ ahaṁ ca lokānugato vahāmi baliṁ ca śuklānimiṣāya tubhyam

O Lord, by the rope of Your own word as Prajapati, this entire world, bound by desire, follows along; and I too, following the world, offer my oblation to You, O spotless one, O unwinking time itself.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.3.21.17)

lokāṁś ca lokānugatān paśūṁś ca hitvā śritās te caraṇātapatram parasparaṁ tvad-guṇa-vāda-sīdhu- pīyūṣa-niryāpita-deha-dharmāḥ

But those who, forsaking worldly life and its beast-like followers, have taken refuge beneath the umbrella of Your feet, their very bodily necessities dissolve away in the intoxicating nectar of discussing Your qualities among themselves.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.3.21.18)

na te ’jarākṣa-bhramir āyur eṣāṁ trayodaśāraṁ tri-śataṁ ṣaṣṭi-parva ṣaṇ-nemy ananta-cchadi yat tri-ṇābhi karāla-sroto jagad ācchidya dhāvat

That wheel, turning upon an imperishable axle, its thirteen spokes, its three hundred and sixty joints, its six rims, its countless leaves, and its three hubs, which runs on with terrible force, cutting through the universe as it goes, does not diminish the lifespan of Your devotees.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.3.21.19)

ekaḥ svayaṁ sañ jagataḥ sisṛkṣayā- dvitīyayātmann adhi-yogamāyayā sṛjasy adaḥ pāsi punar grasiṣyase yathorṇa-nābhir bhagavan sva-śaktibhiḥ

Being one alone, yet through the wish to create, ruling Yourself by that second power within You, Your own yogamaya, You create these worlds, sustain them, and then draw them back into Yourself again, O Lord, by Your own powers, just as a spider spins and reabsorbs its web.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.3.21.20)

naitad batādhīśa padaṁ tavepsitaṁ yan māyayā nas tanuṣe bhūta-sūkṣmam anugrahāyāstv api yarhi māyayā lasat-tulasyā bhagavān vilakṣitaḥ

This world of gross and subtle elements, which You manifest for us through Your maya, is not truly Your own desire, O Lord; yet may it become, all the same, a vehicle of Your grace, for it is through that same maya that You, O Lord, are perceived by us, adorned with radiant tulasi.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.3.21.21)

taṁ tvānubhūtyoparata-kriyārthaṁ sva-māyayā vartita-loka-tantram namāmy abhīkṣṇaṁ namanīya-pāda- sarojam alpīyasi kāma-varṣam

Again and again I bow to You, whose lotus feet deserve all reverence, who through Your own maya have set the worlds' machinery in motion so that fruitive action might cease through realization of You, and who shower desires even upon the most insignificant of beings.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.3.21.22)

ṛṣir uvāca ity avyalīkaṁ praṇuto ’bja-nābhas tam ābabhāṣe vacasāmṛtena suparṇa-pakṣopari rocamānaḥ prema-smitodvīkṣaṇa-vibhramad-bhrūḥ

The sage said: Thus sincerely praised, the lotus-naveled Lord, radiant upon the wings of Garuda, His eyebrows moving gracefully as He gazed with a loving smile, replied to him in words sweet as nectar.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.3.21.23)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca viditvā tava caityaṁ me puraiva samayoji tat yad-artham ātma-niyamais tvayaivāhaṁ samarcitaḥ

The Lord said: Knowing what was in your heart, I have already arranged that very thing for which you, through your own self-discipline, have worshiped Me.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.3.21.24)

na vai jātu mṛṣaiva syāt prajādhyakṣa mad-arhaṇam bhavad-vidheṣv atitarāṁ mayi saṅgṛbhitātmanām

O lord of created beings, worship offered to Me is never in vain, above all for those such as yourself, whose minds are wholly given over to Me.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.3.21.25)

prajāpati-sutaḥ samrāṇ manur vikhyāta-maṅgalaḥ brahmāvartaṁ yo ’dhivasan śāsti saptārṇavāṁ mahīm

The son of the Prajapati Brahma, the emperor Manu, renowned for his righteous deeds, who dwells in Brahmavarta, rules over the earth with its seven seas.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.21.26)

sa ceha vipra rājarṣir mahiṣyā śatarūpayā āyāsyati didṛkṣus tvāṁ paraśvo dharma-kovidaḥ

That royal sage, O brahmana, so accomplished in dharma, will arrive here the day after tomorrow with his queen Shatarupa, wishing to see you.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.3.21.27)

ātmajām asitāpāṅgīṁ vayaḥ-śīla-guṇānvitām mṛgayantīṁ patiṁ dāsyaty anurūpāya te prabho

His daughter, dark-eyed, of ripened age, endowed with fine character and every good quality, seeking a husband, he will give to you, O lord, seeing you as her fitting match.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.3.21.28)

samāhitaṁ te hṛdayaṁ yatremān parivatsarān sā tvāṁ brahman nṛpa-vadhūḥ kāmam āśu bhajiṣyati

O brahmana, she on whom your heart has been fixed all these years, that royal maiden will very soon give herself to you, just as you have longed for.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.3.21.29)

yā ta ātma-bhṛtaṁ vīryaṁ navadhā prasaviṣyati vīrye tvadīye ṛṣaya ādhāsyanty añjasātmanaḥ

She, bearing the seed you have sown within her, will bring forth offspring nine times over; and in those daughters you beget, sages in turn will beget their own children.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.3.21.30)

tvaṁ ca samyag anuṣṭhāya nideśaṁ ma uśattamaḥ mayi tīrthī-kṛtāśeṣa- kriyārtho māṁ prapatsyase

And you, having faithfully carried out My command, purified to the utmost, offering the fruits of all your actions unto Me as into sacred waters, will in the end attain to Me.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.3.21.31)

kṛtvā dayāṁ ca jīveṣu dattvā cābhayam ātmavān mayy ātmānaṁ saha jagad drakṣyasy ātmani cāpi mām

Showing compassion to all living beings, granting them freedom from fear, having realized your own self, you will see your own self and the whole universe within Me, and Me as well within yourself.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.3.21.32)

sahāhaṁ svāṁśa-kalayā tvad-vīryeṇa mahā-mune tava kṣetre devahūtyāṁ praṇeṣye tattva-saṁhitām

O great sage, I Myself, together with a portion of My own plenary expansion, through your very seed, will take birth in your wife Devahuti, and there impart the doctrine of the ultimate principles.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.3.21.33)

maitreya uvāca evaṁ tam anubhāṣyātha bhagavān pratyag-akṣajaḥ jagāma bindusarasaḥ sarasvatyā pariśritāt

Maitreya said: Having spoken thus to him, the Lord, who reveals Himself to senses turned inward, departed from Bindu-sarovara, that lake encircled by the Sarasvati.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.3.21.34)

nirīkṣatas tasya yayāv aśeṣa- siddheśvarābhiṣṭuta-siddha-mārgaḥ ākarṇayan patra-rathendra-pakṣair uccāritaṁ stomam udīrṇa-sāma

As he watched, the Lord departed along that path of perfection, praised by all the masters of the perfected souls, listening to the exalted chant of the Sama arising from the beating wings of Garuda, king of birds.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.3.21.35)

atha samprasthite śukle kardamo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ āste sma bindusarasi taṁ kālaṁ pratipālayan

Then, after the pure Lord had departed, the worshipful sage Kardama remained there at Bindu-sarovara, awaiting the appointed time.

Manu, mounting a chariot adorned with gold, and placing his own daughter upon it, journeyed over the earth together with his queen.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.3.21.37)

tasmin sudhanvann ahani bhagavān yat samādiśat upāyād āśrama-padaṁ muneḥ śānta-vratasya tat

O great bowman Vidura, on that very day appointed by the Lord, he arrived at the hermitage of the sage, whose vow of austerity had just reached its peaceful completion.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.3.21.38)

yasmin bhagavato netrān nyapatann aśru-bindavaḥ kṛpayā samparītasya prapanne ’rpitayā bhṛśam

It was into this lake that teardrops had fallen from the eyes of the Lord, who was overcome with compassion, so deeply given over to the surrendered soul.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.21.39)

tad vai bindusaro nāma sarasvatyā pariplutam puṇyaṁ śivāmṛta-jalaṁ maharṣi-gaṇa-sevitam

That very lake, known as Bindu-sarovara, flooded with the waters of the Sarasvati, was holy, auspicious, its water sweet as nectar, and frequented by hosts of great sages.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.21.40)

puṇya-druma-latā-jālaiḥ kūjat-puṇya-mṛga-dvijaiḥ sarvartu-phala-puṣpāḍhyaṁ vana-rāji-śriyānvitam

It was ringed about with clusters of sacred trees and vines, alive with the sounds of blessed birds and creatures, rich in the fruits and flowers of every season, and adorned with the beauty of forest groves.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.3.21.41)

matta-dvija-gaṇair ghuṣṭaṁ matta-bhramara-vibhramam matta-barhi-naṭāṭopam āhvayan-matta-kokilam

It resounded with the calls of joyous flocks of birds, alive with the wandering flight of intoxicated bees, filled with the proud dance of ecstatic peacocks, and echoing with koels calling to one another in delight.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.21.42)

It was adorned with kadamba, champaka, ashoka, karanja, bakula, and asana trees, and with kunda, mandara, and kutaja trees, along with young mango saplings.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.21.43)

It rang sweetly with the calls of karandava ducks, plavas, swans, ospreys, waterfowl, cranes, chakravaka birds, and chakoras.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.21.44)

tathaiva hariṇaiḥ kroḍaiḥ śvāvid-gavaya-kuñjaraiḥ gopucchair haribhir markair nakulair nābhibhir vṛtam

And it was likewise surrounded by deer, wild boars, porcupines, gavayas, elephants, langurs, lions, monkeys, mongooses, and musk deer.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.3.21.45)

Entering that finest of holy places, together with his daughter, the first monarch Manu beheld the sage seated there, having just offered oblations into the sacred fire.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.3.21.46)

vidyotamānaṁ vapuṣā tapasy ugra-yujā ciram nātikṣāmaṁ bhagavataḥ snigdhāpāṅgāvalokanāt tad-vyāhṛtāmṛta-kalā- pīyūṣa-śravaṇena ca

Though he had long been engaged in the most severe austerity, his body still shone with radiance and had not wasted away at all, thanks to the Lord's loving, sidelong glance, and from having heard the moonlike nectar of His words.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.3.21.47)

prāṁśuṁ padma-palāśākṣaṁ jaṭilaṁ cīra-vāsasam upasaṁśritya malinaṁ yathārhaṇam asaṁskṛtam

Manu approached him, tall, his eyes like lotus petals, his hair matted, clad in rags, and found him, as it were, like an unpolished gem, soiled with the dust of long austerity.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.3.21.48)

gṛhītārhaṇam āsīnaṁ saṁyataṁ prīṇayan muniḥ smaran bhagavad-ādeśam ity āha ślakṣṇayā girā

The sage, delighting the composed king who now sat there having received his hospitality, and recalling the Lord's own instruction, spoke to him in this gentle voice.
