Skandha 3 · Chapter 9
Brahma's Prayers for Creative Energy
Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.9.1)
brahmovāca jñāto ’si me ’dya sucirān nanu deha-bhājāṁ na jñāyate bhagavato gatir ity avadyam nānyat tvad asti bhagavann api tan na śuddhaṁ māyā-guṇa-vyatikarād yad urur vibhāsi
Brahma said: O my Lord, after this long penance I have at last come to know You today; how unfortunate it is that embodied beings in general remain unable to know Your true nature. There exists nothing beyond You, and even what appears to be beyond You is not the pure Absolute, for it is only through the interplay of the modes of Your material energy that You, though immeasurable, become manifest.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.9.2)
rūpaṁ yad etad avabodha-rasodayena śaśvan-nivṛtta-tamasaḥ sad-anugrahāya ādau gṛhītam avatāra-śataika-bījaṁ yan-nābhi-padma-bhavanād aham āvirāsam
This form, born of the manifestation of Your inner potency of consciousness, forever free from darkness and meant for the mercy of devotees, has from the beginning been accepted as the root-seed of a hundred incarnations; and it was from this very home of Your navel lotus that I myself was generated.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.9.3)
nātaḥ paraṁ parama yad bhavataḥ svarūpam ānanda-mātram avikalpam aviddha-varcaḥ paśyāmi viśva-sṛjam ekam aviśvam ātman bhūtendriyātmaka-madas ta upāśrito ’smi
O Supreme, beyond this true form of Yours there is nothing further; I see You not merely as unchanging, undiminished, impersonal bliss, but as the one creator of the universe, though Yourself not of that universe. O Supreme Self, I, who identify myself with this body and these senses, have taken shelter of You.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.9.4)
tad vā idaṁ bhuvana-maṅgala maṅgalāya dhyāne sma no darśitaṁ ta upāsakānām tasmai namo bhagavate ’nuvidhema tubhyaṁ yo ’nādṛto naraka-bhāgbhir asat-prasaṅgaiḥ
That very form of Yours, all-auspicious for all the worlds, has been shown to us, Your worshipers, in meditation, for our welfare. To that Personality of Godhead I offer my obeisances again and again — He whom those bound for hell, engrossed in worthless worldly talk, neglect.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.9.5)
ye tu tvadīya-caraṇāmbuja-kośa-gandhaṁ jighranti karṇa-vivaraiḥ śruti-vāta-nītam bhaktyā gṛhīta-caraṇaḥ parayā ca teṣāṁ nāpaiṣi nātha hṛdayāmburuhāt sva-puṁsām
Those who inhale, through the passage of their ears, the fragrance of the whorl of Your lotus feet carried on the breeze of Vedic sound, and who thus grasp Your feet with supreme devotion — from the lotus of their hearts, O Lord, You never depart.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.9.6)
tāvad bhayaṁ draviṇa-deha-suhṛn-nimittaṁ śokaḥ spṛhā paribhavo vipulaś ca lobhaḥ tāvan mamety asad-avagraha ārti-mūlaṁ yāvan na te ’ṅghrim abhayaṁ pravṛṇīta lokaḥ
So long as one does not take shelter of Your fearless feet, fear on account of wealth, body and kinsmen persists — grief, longing, humiliation and boundless greed; so long the false grasping of 'this is mine' remains the root of all affliction.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.9.7)
daivena te hata-dhiyo bhavataḥ prasaṅgāt sarvāśubhopaśamanād vimukhendriyā ye kurvanti kāma-sukha-leśa-lavāya dīnā lobhābhibhūta-manaso ’kuśalāni śaśvat
Those unfortunate souls, bereft of understanding by fate, who turn their senses away from association with You — the very thing that curbs all inauspiciousness — perform, for the sake of some fleeting particle of sensory pleasure, wretched deeds always, their minds overwhelmed by greed.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.9.8)
kṣut-tṛṭ-tridhātubhir imā muhur ardyamānāḥ śītoṣṇa-vāta-varaṣair itaretarāc ca kāmāgninācyuta-ruṣā ca sudurbhareṇa sampaśyato mana urukrama sīdate me
O Urukrama, mighty actor — constantly tormented by hunger, thirst and the three bodily humors, by cold, heat, wind and rain and other mutual disturbances, and by the unbearable fire of lust and anger — seeing all this, my mind sinks into despondency.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.9.9)
yāvat pṛthaktvam idam ātmana indriyārtha- māyā-balaṁ bhagavato jana īśa paśyet tāvan na saṁsṛtir asau pratisaṅkrameta vyarthāpi duḥkha-nivahaṁ vahatī kriyārthā
As long as a person perceives this separateness — the illusory power of the Personality of Godhead operating through body and senses — so long, O Lord, this cycle of birth and death, though ultimately meaningless, does not turn back from him, bearing a multitude of sorrows for the sake of fruitive works.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.9.10)
ahny āpṛtārta-karaṇā niśi niḥśayānā nānā-manoratha-dhiyā kṣaṇa-bhagna-nidrāḥ daivāhatārtha-racanā ṛṣayo ’pi deva yuṣmat-prasaṅga-vimukhā iha saṁsaranti
By day their senses engaged in distressing labor, by night lying sleepless, their sleep constantly broken by manifold mental speculation — even great sages, O Lord, their plans frustrated by fate, wander in this world so long as they remain averse to discourse on You.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.9.11)
tvaṁ bhakti-yoga-paribhāvita-hṛt-saroja āsse śrutekṣita-patho nanu nātha puṁsām yad-yad-dhiyā ta urugāya vibhāvayanti tat-tad-vapuḥ praṇayase sad-anugrahāya
You reside upon the lotus of the heart of those wholly absorbed in devotional service, O Lord of Your devotees, upon the path first glimpsed through hearing; O multiglorious one, whatever form of Yours they contemplate with their intelligence, in that very form You manifest Yourself, to show them Your causeless mercy.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.9.12)
nātiprasīdati tathopacitopacārair ārādhitaḥ sura-gaṇair hṛdi baddha-kāmaiḥ yat sarva-bhūta-dayayāsad-alabhyayaiko nānā-janeṣv avahitaḥ suhṛd antar-ātmā
He is not so pleased even when worshiped with elaborate paraphernalia by the celestial gods whose hearts are bound by material desire, as He is pleased by that which, out of compassion for all beings, He alone — unattainable by the nondevoted — dwelling as the well-wishing Supersoul within the hearts of the many living beings, perceives.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.3.9.13)
puṁsām ato vividha-karmabhir adhvarādyair dānena cogra-tapasā paricaryayā ca ārādhanaṁ bhagavatas tava sat-kriyārtho dharmo ’rpitaḥ karhicid mriyate na yatra
Therefore, whatever religious duty people offer — through various fruitive acts, Vedic sacrifices, charity, severe austerity or devoted service — for the sole purpose of pleasing You, that alone, O Lord, never perishes.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.3.9.14)
śaśvat svarūpa-mahasaiva nipīta-bheda- mohāya bodha-dhiṣaṇāya namaḥ parasmai viśvodbhava-sthiti-layeṣu nimitta-līlā- rāsāya te nama idaṁ cakṛmeśvarāya
Obeisances unto You, the Supreme, who by the very glory of Your own form have forever swallowed up the illusion of differentiation, and who possess perfect knowledge and intelligence; and this homage I offer unto You, O Lord, whose playful pastimes alone are the cause of the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the universe.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.3.9.15)
yasyāvatāra-guṇa-karma-viḍambanāni nāmāni ye ’su-vigame vivaśā gṛṇanti te ’naika-janma-śamalaṁ sahasaiva hitvā saṁyānty apāvṛtāmṛtaṁ tam ajaṁ prapadye
I take shelter of Him, the unborn one, whose incarnations, qualities, activities and names are all mysterious pastimes — those who, even helplessly, utter His names while quitting this life at once give up the accumulated sin of many births and attain the immortality whose gates stand open.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.3.9.16)
yo vā ahaṁ ca giriśaś ca vibhuḥ svayaṁ ca sthity-udbhava-pralaya-hetava ātma-mūlam bhittvā tri-pād vavṛdha eka uru-prarohas tasmai namo bhagavate bhuvana-drumāya
He who is Myself, and Giriśa (Śiva) too, and the Almighty (Viṣṇu) Himself — the three causes of maintenance, creation and dissolution — having pierced through, self-rooted, grew as one with three trunks and many vast branches: to that Personality of Godhead, the tree of the universe, I offer my obeisances.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.3.9.17)
loko vikarma-nirataḥ kuśale pramattaḥ karmaṇy ayaṁ tvad-udite bhavad-arcane sve yas tāvad asya balavān iha jīvitāśāṁ sadyaś chinatty animiṣāya namo ’stu tasmai
People in general, engaged in improper acts, remain negligent of that beneficial work — the worship of You — which You Yourself have enjoined; unto Him who, mighty as He is, in an instant cuts short the hope for life of such people through unblinking time, my obeisances.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.3.9.18)
yasmād bibhemy aham api dviparārdha-dhiṣṇyam adhyāsitaḥ sakala-loka-namaskṛtaṁ yat tepe tapo bahu-savo ’varurutsamānas tasmai namo bhagavate ’dhimakhāya tubhyam
He from whom I myself feel fear, though I am situated in a post lasting two parardhas and honored by all the worlds — desiring to attain Him, many performed penance for countless years; unto that Personality of Godhead, the enjoyer of all sacrifice, my obeisances unto You.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.3.9.19)
tiryaṅ-manuṣya-vibudhādiṣu jīva-yoniṣv ātmecchayātma-kṛta-setu-parīpsayā yaḥ reme nirasta-viṣayo ’py avaruddha-dehas tasmai namo bhagavate puruṣottamāya
He who, by His own will, desiring to preserve the bounds He Himself has set, sports among the species of life — animals, humans and demigods alike — remaining, even while manifesting a body, untouched by material contamination and free of worldly attachment: unto that Personality of Godhead, the Supreme Person, my obeisances.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.3.9.20)
yo ’vidyayānupahato ’pi daśārdha-vṛttyā nidrām uvāha jaṭharī-kṛta-loka-yātraḥ antar-jale ’hi-kaśipu-sparśānukūlāṁ bhīmormi-mālini janasya sukhaṁ vivṛṇvan
He who, though untouched by ignorance, accepted sleep through His five-fold interaction, sustaining the affairs of all worlds within His abdomen, while within the waters of dissolution showing the happiness comfortable to the touch of His serpent-bed amid the garland of terrible waves.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.3.9.21)
yan-nābhi-padma-bhavanād aham āsam īḍya loka-trayopakaraṇo yad-anugraheṇa tasmai namas ta udara-stha-bhavāya yoga- nidrāvasāna-vikasan-nalinekṣaṇāya
From whose navel-lotus home I, O worshipable one, was born, made the instrument for the creation of the three worlds by His mercy — unto Him I offer my obeisances, unto Him who lies within that abdomen, whose lotus eyes bloomed open at the close of His yogic sleep.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.3.9.22)
so ’yaṁ samasta-jagatāṁ suhṛd eka ātmā sattvena yan mṛḍayate bhagavān bhagena tenaiva me dṛśam anuspṛśatād yathāhaṁ srakṣyāmi pūrvavad idaṁ praṇata-priyo ’sau
He, the Supersoul, the one friend of all the universes, who through the mode of goodness and His six opulences bestows happiness — may He, the Personality of Godhead, dear to the surrendered, touch my vision, so that I may again create this universe as before.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.3.9.23)
eṣa prapanna-varado ramayātma-śaktyā yad yat kariṣyati gṛhīta-guṇāvatāraḥ tasmin sva-vikramam idaṁ sṛjato ’pi ceto yuñjīta karma-śamalaṁ ca yathā vijahyām
May this Lord, who bestows boons upon the surrendered, who ever sports with His internal potency, and who accepts the incarnation of the mode of goodness for whatever He wills to do, engage my heart in Himself, so that even while creating this universe with His own might, I may set aside the taint of works.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.3.9.24)
nābhi-hradād iha sato ’mbhasi yasya puṁso vijñāna-śaktir aham āsam ananta-śakteḥ rūpaṁ vicitram idam asya vivṛṇvato me mā rīriṣīṣṭa nigamasya girāṁ visargaḥ
I, the potency of the total universal knowledge, was born from the boundlessly powerful Personality of Godhead who lay in the waters upon this navel-lake in this millennium; as I now reveal His manifold and wondrous form, may this flow of Vedic speech not fail me.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.3.9.25)
so ’sāv adabhra-karuṇo bhagavān vivṛddha- prema-smitena nayanāmburuhaṁ vijṛmbhan utthāya viśva-vijayāya ca no viṣādaṁ mādhvyā girāpanayatāt puruṣaḥ purāṇaḥ
That same Lord, boundlessly merciful, the oldest of persons, opening His lotus eyes with a smile grown from deepest love, having risen for the flourishing of the universe — may He remove our despondency with His sweet words.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.9.26)
maitreya uvāca sva-sambhavaṁ niśāmyaivaṁ tapo-vidyā-samādhibhiḥ yāvan mano-vacaḥ stutvā virarāma sa khinnavat
Maitreya said: Thus having beheld the source of his own appearance, Brahmā, having praised Him with penance, knowledge and meditation as far as his mind and words could reach, fell silent, as if exhausted.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.3.9.27)
athābhipretam anvīkṣya brahmaṇo madhusūdanaḥ viṣaṇṇa-cetasaṁ tena kalpa-vyatikarāmbhasā
Thereupon, observing Brahmā's intention, Madhusūdana saw that his heart was made despondent by the devastating waters of the dissolution of the millennium, and that he was greatly distressed over his understanding of the arrangement of the worlds;
Verse 28 (bhagavata.3.9.28)
loka-saṁsthāna-vijñāna ātmanaḥ parikhidyataḥ tam āhāgādhayā vācā kaśmalaṁ śamayann iva
and He then spoke to him in deep and unfathomable words, as if to calm the very impurity that troubled his mind.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.3.9.29)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca mā veda-garbha gās tandrīṁ sarga udyamam āvaha tan mayāpāditaṁ hy agre yan māṁ prārthayate bhavān
The Personality of Godhead said: O womb of the Vedas, do not become weary; take up again the endeavor of creation, for that which you now beg of Me was already granted to you by Me at the very beginning.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.3.9.30)
bhūyas tvaṁ tapa ātiṣṭha vidyāṁ caiva mad-āśrayām tābhyām antar-hṛdi brahman lokān drakṣyasy apāvṛtān
Again take up penance, and also knowledge resting upon Me; by these two, O brāhmaṇa, within your own heart you shall behold all the worlds laid open.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.3.9.31)
tata ātmani loke ca bhakti-yuktaḥ samāhitaḥ draṣṭāsi māṁ tataṁ brahman mayi lokāṁs tvam ātmanaḥ
Thereafter, O Brahmā, united in devotional service and fully absorbed, you shall see Me pervading both yourself and the universe, and you shall see the worlds resting within yourself, even as they rest in Me.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.3.9.32)
yadā tu sarva-bhūteṣu dāruṣv agnim iva sthitam praticakṣīta māṁ loko jahyāt tarhy eva kaśmalam
When you behold Me present in all beings, as fire lies hidden in wood, then the world too, seeing Me thus, will at once abandon its illusion.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.3.9.33)
yadā rahitam ātmānaṁ bhūtendriya-guṇāśayaiḥ svarūpeṇa mayopetaṁ paśyan svārājyam ṛcchati
When, seeing the self freed from the material elements, senses and the influence of the modes, one perceives it in its true nature as approached by Me, then one attains one's own self-sovereignty.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.3.9.34)
nānā-karma-vitānena prajā bahvīḥ sisṛkṣataḥ nātmāvasīdaty asmiṁs te varṣīyān mad-anugrahaḥ
Desiring to generate manifold progeny through the various expansions of your work, your self will never be distressed in this task; ever-increasing shall be My mercy upon you.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.3.9.35)
ṛṣim ādyaṁ na badhnāti pāpīyāṁs tvāṁ rajo-guṇaḥ yan mano mayi nirbaddhaṁ prajāḥ saṁsṛjato ’pi te
The vicious mode of passion never binds you, the first and foremost of sages, because your mind remains firmly fixed in Me even while you generate progeny.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.3.9.36)
jñāto ’haṁ bhavatā tv adya durvijñeyo ’pi dehinām yan māṁ tvaṁ manyase ’yuktaṁ bhūtendriya-guṇātmabhiḥ
You have indeed come to know Me today, though I am most difficult for embodied souls to understand — since you no longer regard Me as constituted of the material elements, senses and modes, as the conditioned soul does.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.3.9.37)
tubhyaṁ mad-vicikitsāyām ātmā me darśito ’bahiḥ nālena salile mūlaṁ puṣkarasya vicinvataḥ
To you, in your very attempt to know Me, My own self has been revealed from within — as one who searches for the root of the lotus discovers it through its stalk, in the water, without going outside.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.3.9.38)
O Brahmā, whatever prayers you have offered Me, marked by the glorification of My activities and narratives, and whatever steadfastness you hold in penance — all this is but My own causeless mercy.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.9.39)
prīto ’ham astu bhadraṁ te lokānāṁ vijayecchayā yad astauṣīr guṇamayaṁ nirguṇaṁ mānuvarṇayan
I am pleased; let there be all blessing upon you. Out of the desire for the glorification of the worlds, you have praised Me, who am beyond material qualities, describing Me nonetheless as possessed of transcendental qualities.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.9.40)
ya etena pumān nityaṁ stutvā stotreṇa māṁ bhajet tasyāśu samprasīdeyaṁ sarva-kāma-vareśvaraḥ
Whatever person regularly worships Me by praying with this very hymn shall soon be blessed by Me — the Lord who fulfills all desires — with My full grace.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.3.9.41)
pūrtena tapasā yajñair dānair yoga-samādhinā rāddhaṁ niḥśreyasaṁ puṁsāṁ mat-prītis tattvavin-matam
Whatever ultimate good is achieved by people through pious works, penance, sacrifices, charity, yoga and trance — the opinion of those expert in truth is that it is My satisfaction alone that constitutes that highest good.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.9.42)
aham ātmātmanāṁ dhātaḥ preṣṭhaḥ san preyasām api ato mayi ratiṁ kuryād dehādir yat-kṛte priyaḥ

Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.9.43)
sarva-veda-mayenedam ātmanātmātma-yoninā prajāḥ sṛja yathā-pūrvaṁ yāś ca mayy anuśerate

Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.9.44)
maitreya uvāca tasmā evaṁ jagat-sraṣṭre pradhāna-puruṣeśvaraḥ vyajyedaṁ svena rūpeṇa kañja-nābhas tirodadhe
