Skandha 11 · Chapter 17
The Description of Sandhya and Other Daily Rites
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.11.17.1)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca bhinnapādā tu gāyatrī brahmahatyāpraṇāśinī abhinnapādā gāyatrī brahmahatyāṁ prayacchati
Shri Narayana said: The Gayatri recited with its feet separated destroys even the sin of brahminicide; the Gayatri recited with its feet unseparated bestows the sin of brahminicide.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.11.17.2)
acchinnapādāgāyatrījapaṁ kurvanti ye dvijāḥ athomukhāśca tiṣṭhanti kalpakoṭiśatāni ca
Those twice-born who recite the Gayatri without separating its feet remain, thereafter, with faces downward in hell for hundreds of millions of kalpas.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.11.17.3)
sampuṭaikā ṣaḍoṅkārā gāyatrī vividhā matā dharmaśāstrapurāṇeṣu itihāseṣu suvrata
O one of good vows, the Gayatri is held to be of various forms in the Dharma-shastras, Puranas, and Itihasas — recited singly enclosed, or with six Oms.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.11.17.4)
pañcapraṇavasaṁyuktāṁ japedityanuśāsanam japasaṅkhyāṣṭabhāgānte pādo japyasturīyakaḥ
The rule is that it should be recited joined with five Oms. At the end of an eighth part of the total count of recitation, the fourth pada should be recited.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.11.17.5)
sa dvijaḥ paramo jñeyaḥ paraṁ sāyujyamāpnuyāt anyathā prajapedyastu sa japo viphalo bhavet
That twice-born should be known as supreme, and he attains the supreme state of union with the divine. But whoever recites it otherwise — that recitation becomes fruitless.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.11.17.6)
sampuṭaikā ṣaḍoṅkārā bhavetsā ūrdhvaretasām gṛhastho brahmacārī vā mokṣārthī turīyāṁ japet
The form enclosed with six Oms belongs to those of retained seed; a householder or a celibate student who desires liberation should recite the fourth pada.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.11.17.7)
turīyapādo gāyatryāḥ parorajase sāvadom dhyānamasya pravakṣyāmi japasāṅgaphalapradam
The fourth pada of the Gayatri is 'paro rajase sāvadom.' I shall now declare its meditation, which bestows the complete fruit of the recitation.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.11.17.8)
hṛdi vikasitapadmaṁ sārkasomāgnibimbaṁ praṇavamayamacintyaṁ yasya pītaṁ prakalpyam acalaparamasūkṣmaṁ jyotirākāśasāraṁ bhavatu mama mude'sau saccidānandarūpaḥ
In the heart, a blossomed lotus, together with the orbs of sun, moon, and fire, composed of the syllable Om, inconceivable, whose form is to be conceived as golden-yellow, unmoving, supremely subtle, a light that is the very essence of space — may this being, of the nature of existence-consciousness-bliss, be for my joy.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.11.17.9)
triśūlayonī surabhimakṣamālāṁ ca liṅgakam ambujaṁ ca mahāmudrāmiti sapta pradarśayet
One should display the seven mudras: the trident, the yoni, the Surabhi gesture, the rosary, the linga, the lotus, and the great mudra.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.11.17.10)
yā sandhyā saiva gāyatrī saccidānandarūpiṇī bhaktyā tāṁ brāhmaṇo nityaṁ pūjayecca namettataḥ
She who is the Sandhya is herself the Gayatri, whose very form is existence-consciousness-bliss. A brahmin should, with devotion, constantly worship and bow to her.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.11.17.11)
dhyātasya pūjāṁ kurvīta pañcabhiścopacārakaiḥ laṁ pṛthivyātmane gandhamarpayāmi namo namaḥ
One should worship this meditated form with the five offerings: 'Laṁ, to the Self as Earth, I offer fragrance — salutations, salutations.'
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.11.17.12)
hamākāśātmane puṣpaṁ cārpayāmi namo namaḥ yaṁ ca vāyvātmane dhūpaṁ cārpayāmi tato vadet
'Haṁ, to the Self as Space, I offer flowers — salutations, salutations.' And then one should say: 'Yaṁ, to the Self as Air, I offer incense.'
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.11.17.13)
raṁ ca vahnyātmane dīpamarpayāmi tato vadet vamamṛtātmane tasmai naivedyamapi cārpayet
Then one should say: 'Raṁ, to the Self as Fire, I offer a lamp.' 'Vaṁ, to that Self of nectar, I offer food-offering as well.'
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.11.17.14)
yaṁ raṁ laṁ vaṁ hamiti ca puṣpāñjalimathārpayet evaṁ pūjāṁ vidhāyātha cānte mudrāḥ pradarśayet
With 'Yaṁ, Raṁ, Laṁ, Vaṁ, Haṁ,' one should then offer a handful of flowers. Having thus performed the worship, at the end one should display the mudras.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.11.17.15)
dhyāyettu manasā devīṁ mantramuccārayecchanaiḥ na kampayecchiro grīvā dantānnaiva prakāśayet
One should meditate on the Goddess with the mind and utter the mantra softly; one should not shake the head or neck, nor bare the teeth.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.11.17.16)
vidhināṣṭottaraśatamaṣṭāviṁśatireva vā daśavāramaśakto vā nāto nyūnaṁ kadācana
According to rule, one should recite one hundred and eight times, or twenty-eight times, or, if unable, ten times — but never fewer than this.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.11.17.17)
tata udvāsayeddevīmuttametyanuvākataḥ na gāyatrīṁ japedvidvāñjalamadhye kathañcana
Then one should send off the Goddess with the recitation beginning 'uttame...' A wise person should never, under any circumstances, recite the Gayatri while standing in water.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.11.17.18)
yataḥ sāgnimukhī proktetyāhuḥ kecinmaharṣayaḥ surabhirjñānaśūrpaṁ ca kūrmo yoniśca paṅkajam
For she is declared to have Agni as her face — so say some great sages. Surabhi, the winnowing-fan of knowledge, the tortoise, the yoni, and the lotus,
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.11.17.19)
liṅgaṁ nirvāṇakaṁ caiva japānte'ṣṭau pradarśayet yadakṣarapadabhraṣṭaṁ svaravyañjanavarjitam
the linga, and the mudra of liberation — these eight should be displayed at the end of the recitation. 'Whatever has fallen short in syllable or word, whatever is devoid of vowel or consonant,
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.11.17.20)
tatsarvaṁ kṣamyatāṁ devi kaśyapapriyavādini gāyatrītarpaṇaṁ cātaḥ karaṇīyaṁ mahāmune
may all of that be forgiven, O Goddess, sweet-spoken one dear to Kashyapa.' O great sage, the tarpana to the Gayatri should then be performed.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.11.17.21)
gāyatrī chanda ākhyātaṁ viśvāmitraṛṣiḥ smṛtaḥ savitā devatā proktā viniyogaśca tarpaṇe
Gayatri is declared to be its meter, Vishvamitra is remembered as its sage, Savitri is declared to be its deity, and its application is in the tarpana rite.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.11.17.22)
bhūrityuktvā ca ṛgvedapuruṣaṁ tarpayāmi ca bhuva ityetaduktvā ca yajurvedamatho vadet
Having said 'Bhuh,' one says 'I offer libation to the Purusha of the Rig Veda.' Having said 'Bhuvah,' one should then say the same for the Yajur Veda.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.11.17.23)
svarvyāhṛtiṁ samuktvā ca sāmavedaṁ samuccaret maha ityetaduktvānte'tharvavedaṁ ca tarpayet
Having uttered the vyahriti 'Svah,' one should recite the same for the Sama Veda; and having said 'Mahah' at the end, one should offer libation to the Atharva Veda.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.11.17.24)
janaḥ padānta itihāsapurāṇamitīrayet tapaḥ sarvāgamaṁ caiva puruṣaṁ tarpayāmi ca
With 'Janah' at the end of the word, one should declare 'Itihasa-Purana'; with 'Tapah,' 'I offer libation to the Purusha of all the Agamas.'
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.11.17.25)
satyaṁ ca satyalokākhyapuruṣaṁ tarpayāmi ca oṁ bhūrbhūrlokapuruṣaṁ tarpayāmi tato vadet
With 'Satyam,' 'I offer libation to the Purusha named Satyaloka.' Then one should say: 'Om, Bhuh, I offer libation to the Purusha of Bhurloka.'
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.11.17.26)
bhuvaśceti bhuvarlokapuruṣaṁ tarpayāmi ca svaḥ svargalokapuruṣaṁ tarpayāmi tataḥ param
'Bhuvah, I offer libation to the Purusha of Bhuvarloka.' 'Svah, I offer libation to the Purusha of Svargaloka,' and then further,
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.11.17.27)
ombhūrekapadā nāma gāyatrīṁ tarpayāmi ca bhuvo dvipadāṁ gāyatrīṁ tarpayāmīti kīrtayet
'Om, Bhuh, I offer libation to the Gayatri named the one-footed.' 'Bhuvah, I offer libation to the Gayatri of two feet' — thus one should declare.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.11.17.28)
svaśca tripadāṁ gāyatrīṁ tarpayāmi tato vadet ombhūrbhuvaḥ svaśceti tathā gāyatrīṁ ca catuṣpadām
'Svah, I offer libation to the Gayatri of three feet,' one should then say; and likewise, 'Om Bhuh Bhuvah Svah, to the four-footed Gayatri.'
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.11.17.29)
uṣasīṁ caiva gāyatrīṁ sāvitrīṁ ca sarasvatīm vedānāṁ mātaraṁ pṛthvīmajāṁ caiva tu kauśikīm
One offers libation to the Gayatri as Ushas, as Savitri, and as Sarasvati; as the Mother of the Vedas, as Earth, as the Unborn, and as Kaushiki;
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.11.17.30)
sāṅkṛtiṁ vai sārvajitiṁ gāyatrīṁ tarpaṇe vadet tarpaṇānte ca śāntyarthaṁ jātavedasamīrayet
as Sankriti, and as Sarvajiti — thus one should declare in the Gayatri tarpana. At the end of the tarpana, for the sake of peace, one should recite the 'Jatavedase' verse.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.11.17.31)
mānastoketi mantraṁ ca śāntyarthaṁ prajapetsudhīḥ tato'pi tryambako mantraḥ śāntyarthaḥ parikīrtitaḥ
The wise should also recite the 'mā nas toke' mantra for the sake of peace; and further, the Tryambaka mantra is likewise proclaimed for the sake of peace.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.11.17.32)
tacchaṁyoriti mantraṁ ca japecchāntyarthameva tu ato devā iti dvābhyāṁ sarvāṅgasparśanaṁ caret
One should also recite the 'tacchaṁ yoḥ' mantra, likewise for the sake of peace. With the two mantras beginning 'ato devāḥ,' one should touch all the limbs of the body.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.11.17.33)
syonāpṛthivimantreṇa bhūmyai kuryātpraṇāmakam yathāvidhi ca gotrādīnuccareddvijasattamaḥ
With the 'syonā pṛthivi' mantra, one should offer a prostration to the Earth; and the best of the twice-born should, according to rule, recite his gotra and other identifying formulas.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.11.17.34)
evaṁ vidhānaṁ sandhyāyāḥ prātaḥkāle prakīrtitam sandhyākarma samāpyānte'pyagnihotraṁ svayaṁ hunet
Thus has the procedure of the morning sandhya been declared. Having completed the sandhya rite, at its end one should personally offer the agnihotra.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.11.17.35)
pañcāyatanapūjāṁ ca tataḥ kuryātsamāhitaḥ śivāṁ śivaṁ gaṇapatiṁ sūryaṁ viṣṇuṁ tathārcayet
Then, with a composed mind, one should perform the worship of the five shrines, worshipping Shiva/Shakti, Ganapati, Surya, and Vishnu.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.11.17.36)
pauruṣeṇa tu sūktena vyāhṛtyā vā samāhitaḥ mūlamantreṇa vā kuryāddhrīśca te iti mantrataḥ
With a composed mind, this should be done either with the Purusha-sukta, or with the vyahritis, or with the root mantra, or with the mantra 'hrīśca te...'
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.11.17.37)
bhavānīṁ tu yajenmadhye tathaiśānyāṁ tu mādhavam āgneyyāṁ girijānāthaṁ gaṇeśaṁ rakṣasāṁ diśi
One should worship Bhavani in the center, then Madhava in the northeast, the Lord of the Mountain's Daughter in the southeast, and Ganesha in the direction of the rakshasas;
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.11.17.38)
vāyavyāmarcayetsūryamiti devasthitikramaḥ ṣoḍaśānupacārāṁśca ṣoḍaśargbhirharennaraḥ
and one should worship Surya in the northwest — this is the sequence of the placement of the deities. A person should perform the sixteen offerings with the sixteen relevant verses.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.11.17.39)
devīmabhyarcya purato yajedanyānanukramāt na devīpūjanātpuṇyamadhikaṁ kvacidīkṣyate
Having first worshipped the Goddess, one should then worship the others in due order; nowhere is any merit seen to be greater than the worship of the Goddess.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.11.17.40)
ata eva tu sandhyāsu sandhyopāstiḥ śrutīritā nākṣatairarcayerdviṣṇuṁ na tulasyā gaṇeśvaram
For this very reason, the worship of the sandhya is declared in the Shruti during the sandhyas. One should not worship Vishnu with raw rice grains, nor Ganesha with tulasi leaves,
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.11.17.41)

madanta and sinduvara, palasha flowers likewise, durva shoots, bilva leaves, and kusha-blossoms too —
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.11.17.44)

punnāgaścampakastadvadyūthikātagarau tathā evamādīni puṣpāṇi devīpriyakarāṇi ca
punnaga and champaka likewise, and yuthika and tagara as well — such flowers as these are pleasing to the Goddess.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.11.17.46)
guggulasya bhaveddhūpo dīpaḥ syāttilatailataḥ kṛtvetthaṁ devatāpūjāṁ tato mūlamanuṁ japet
Incense should be of guggulu resin, and the lamp of sesame oil. Having thus performed the worship of the deity, one should then recite the root mantra.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.11.17.47)
evaṁ pūjāṁ samāpyaiva vedābhyāsaṁ caredbudhaḥ tataḥ svavṛttyā kurvīta poṣyavargārthasādhanam tṛtīyadinabhāge tu niyamena vicakṣaṇaḥ
Having thus completed the worship, the wise one should engage in Vedic study; then, by his own occupation, the discerning one should, in the third portion of the day, diligently attend to the provision of livelihood for his dependents.
