Chapter 3All chaptersChapter 5

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.11.4.1)

nārada uvāca evambhūtānubhāvo'yaṁ rudrākṣo bhavatānagha varṇito mahatāṁ pūjyaḥ kāraṇaṁ tatra kiṁ vada

Narada said: O sinless one, you have thus described this rudraksha of such great power, worshipped by the great ones — tell me, what is the cause of its origin?

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.11.4.2)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca evameva purā pṛṣṭo bhagavān giriśaḥ prabhuḥ ṣaṇmukhena ca rudrastaṁ yaduvāca śṛṇuṣva tat

Shri Narayana said: In ancient times, Lord Girisha, the mighty Shiva, was likewise asked this very question by Shanmukha, the six-faced Kartikeya; hear what Rudra said to him in reply.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.11.4.3)

īśvara uvāca śṛṇu ṣaṇmukha tattvena kathayāmi samāsataḥ tripuro nāma daityastu purā''sītsarvadurjayaḥ

Ishvara said: Listen, O Shanmukha, I shall tell it to you truthfully, in brief. Long ago there was a daitya named Tripura, utterly unconquerable by any.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.11.4.4)

jitāstena surāḥ sarve bahmaviṣṇvādidevatāḥ sarvaistu kathite tasmiṁstadāhaṁ tripuraṁ prati

By him all the gods — Brahma, Vishnu, and the rest — had been conquered. When all of them told me this, then, against Tripura,

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.11.4.5)

acintayaṁ mahāśastramaghorākhyaṁ manoharam sarvadevamayaṁ divyaṁ jvalantaṁ ghorarūpi yat

I conceived a great weapon named 'Aghora' — enchanting, made of the essence of all the gods, divine, blazing, and terrible in form —

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.11.4.6)

tripurasya vadhārthāya devānāṁ tāraṇāya ca sarvavighnopaśamanamaghorāstramacintayam

for the slaying of Tripura and the deliverance of the gods; I conceived the Aghora weapon, the pacifier of all obstacles.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.11.4.7)

divyavarṣasahasraṁ tu cakṣurunmīlitaṁ mayā paścānmamākulākṣibhyaḥ patitā jalabindavaḥ

For a thousand divine years I kept my eyes open wide in concentration; and afterward, drops of water fell from my agitated eyes.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.11.4.8)

tatrāśrubinduto jātā mahārudrākṣavṛkṣakāḥ mamājñayā mahāsena sarveṣāṁ hitakāmyayā

O Mahasena, from those very teardrops, by my command and for the welfare of all beings, the great rudraksha trees came into being.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.11.4.9)

babhūvuste ca rudrākṣā aṣṭatriṁśatprabhedataḥ sūryanetrasamudbhūtāḥ kapilā dvādaśa smṛtāḥ

These rudrakshas came to be of thirty-eight kinds. Those born from my sun-eye are remembered as tawny-brown, twelve kinds;

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.11.4.10)

somanetrotthitāḥ śvetāste ṣoḍaśavidhāḥ kramāt vahninetrodbhavāḥ kṛṣṇā daśa bhedā bhavanti hi

those arisen from my moon-eye are white, sixteen kinds in order; and those born from my fire-eye are black, ten kinds.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.11.4.11)

śvetavarṇaśca rudrākṣo jātito brāhma ucyate kṣātro raktastathā miśro vaiśyaḥ kṛṣṇastu śūdrakaḥ

The white-colored rudraksha is, by its kind, called Brahmin; the red is Kshatriya; the mixed-colored is Vaishya; and the black is Shudra.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.11.4.12)

ekavaktraḥ śivaḥ sākṣādbrahmahatyāṁ vyapohati dvivaktro devadevyo syādvividhaṁ nāśayedagham

The one-faced rudraksha is Shiva himself, and dispels the sin of killing a brahmin. The two-faced is the united form of the God and Goddess, and destroys manifold sin.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.11.4.13)

trivaktrastvanalaḥ sākṣātstrīhatyāṁ dahati kṣaṇāt caturvaktraḥ svayaṁ brahmā narahatyāṁ vyapohati

The three-faced is Agni himself, and instantly burns away the sin of killing a woman. The four-faced is Brahma himself, and dispels the sin of killing a man.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.11.4.14)

pañcavaktraḥ svayaṁ rudraḥ kālāgnirnāma nāmataḥ abhakṣyabhakṣaṇodbhūtairagamyāgamanodbhavaiḥ

The five-faced is Rudra himself, known by the name Kalagni; from sins arising from eating forbidden food and from union with forbidden women —

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.11.4.15)

mucyate sarvapāpaistu pañcavaktrasya dhāraṇāt ṣaḍvaktraḥ kārtikeyastu sa dhāryo dakṣiṇe kare

one is freed by wearing the five-faced rudraksha. The six-faced is Kartikeya himself; it should be worn on the right hand.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.11.4.16)

brahmahatyādibhiḥ pāpairmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ saptavaktro mahābhāgo hyanaṅgo nāma nāmataḥ

One is freed from sins such as killing a brahmin — of this there is no doubt. The seven-faced, of great fortune, is known by the name Ananga.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.11.4.17)

taddhāraṇānmucyate hi svarṇasteyādipātakaiḥ aṣṭavaktro mahāsena sākṣāddevo vināyakaḥ

By wearing it one is freed from sins such as the theft of gold. The eight-faced, O Mahasena, is the god Vinayaka himself.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.11.4.18)

antakūṭaṁ tūlakūṭaṁ svarṇakūṭaṁ tathaiva ca duṣṭānvayastriyaṁ vātha saṁspṛśaṁśca gurustriyam

Fraud regarding an inheritance, fraud regarding goods, and fraud regarding gold, or touching a woman of evil lineage, or touching the guru's wife —

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.11.4.19)

evamādīni pāpāni hanti sarvāṇi dhāraṇāt vighnāstasya praṇaśyanti yāti cānte paraṁ padam

all such sins as these are destroyed simply by wearing it. His obstacles are destroyed, and in the end he attains the supreme state.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.11.4.20)

bhavantyete guṇāḥ sarve hyaṣṭavaktrasya dhāraṇāt navavaktro bhairavastu dhārayedvāmabāhuke

All these merits come from wearing the eight-faced. The nine-faced is Bhairava; it should be worn on the left arm.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.11.4.21)

bhuktimuktipradaḥ prokto mama tulyabalo bhavet bhrūṇahatyāsahasrāṇi brahmahatyāśatāni ca

It is declared to bestow both worldly enjoyment and liberation; its wearer becomes equal to me in power. Thousands of the sins of killing an embryo, and hundreds of the sins of killing a brahmin —

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.11.4.22)

sadyaḥ pralayamāyānti navavaktrasya dhāraṇāt daśavaktrastu deveśaḥ sākṣāddevo janārdanaḥ

are instantly annihilated by wearing the nine-faced. The ten-faced is the Lord of Gods, Janardana himself.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.11.4.23)

grahāścaiva piśācāśca vetālā brahmarākṣasāḥ pannagāścopaśāmyanti daśavaktrasya dhāraṇāt

Planetary afflictions, spirits, vetalas, brahmarakshasas, and serpents are all pacified by wearing the ten-faced.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.11.4.24)

vaktraikādaśarudrākṣo rudraikādaśakaṁ smṛtam śikhāyāṁ dhārayedyo vai tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

The eleven-faced rudraksha is remembered as the Eleven Rudras themselves. Hear the meritorious fruit of one who wears it upon the tuft of hair:

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.11.4.25)

aśvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyaśatasya ca gavāṁ śatasahasrasya samyagdattasya yatphalam

whatever fruit accrues from a thousand horse-sacrifices, a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices, and the proper gift of a hundred thousand cows —

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.11.4.26)

tatphalaṁ labhate śīghraṁ vaktraikādaśadhāraṇāt dvādaśāsyasya rudrākṣasyaiva karṇe tu dhāraṇāt

that fruit is quickly obtained by wearing the eleven-faced. By wearing the twelve-faced rudraksha upon the ear,

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.11.4.27)

ādityāstoṣitā nityaṁ dvādaśāsye vyavasthitāḥ gobhedhe cāśvamedhe ca yatphalaṁ tadavāpnuyāt

the twelve Adityas, who ever abide in the twelve-faced bead, are pleased; one obtains whatever fruit comes from the gift of cows and the horse-sacrifice.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.11.4.28)

śṛṅgiṇāṁ śastriṇāṁ caiva vyāghrādīnāṁ bhayaṁ na hi na ca vyādhibhayaṁ tasya naiva cādhiḥ prakīrtitaḥ

He has no fear of horned beasts, of armed men, or of tigers; nor does disease trouble him, nor, it is said, does mental anguish afflict him.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.11.4.29)

na ca kiñcidbhayaṁ tasya na ca vyādhiḥ pravartate na kutaścidbhayaṁ tasya sukhī caiveśvaro bhavet

He has no fear whatsoever, and no disease arises in him; fear from any quarter does not touch him, and he becomes happy and lordly.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.11.4.30)

hastyaśvamṛgamārjārasarpamūṣakadardurān kharāṁśca śvaśṛgālāṁśca hatvā bahuvidhānapi

Even having killed an elephant, a horse, a deer, a cat, a snake, a rat, a frog, a donkey, a dog, or a jackal — many kinds of creatures —

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.11.4.31)

mucyate nātra sandeho vaktradvādaśadhāraṇāt vaktratrayodaśo vatsa rudrākṣo yadi labhyate

one is freed from that sin by wearing the twelve-faced — of this there is no doubt. O child, if a thirteen-faced rudraksha is obtained,

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.11.4.32)

kārtikeyasamo jñeyaḥ sarvakāmārthasiddhidaḥ raso rasāyanaṁ caiva tasya sarvaṁ prasiddhyati

its wearer should be known as equal to Kartikeya, granting the fulfillment of every desire and purpose; for him, mercury, alchemical elixirs, and everything else become efficacious.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.11.4.33)

tasyaiva sarvabhogyāni nātra kāryā vicāraṇā mātaraṁ pitaraṁ caiva bhrātaraṁ vā nihanti yaḥ

All enjoyments belong to him alone — no doubt need be entertained here. He who has killed his mother, father, or brother,

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.11.4.34)

mucyate sarvapāpebhyo dhāraṇāttasya ṣaṇmukha caturdaśāsyo rudrākṣo yadi labhyeta putraka

is freed from all such sins by wearing it, O Shanmukha. O child, if a fourteen-faced rudraksha is obtained,

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.11.4.35)

dhārayetsatataṁ mūrdhni tasya piṇḍaḥ śivasya tu kiṁ mune bahunoktena varṇanena punaḥ punaḥ

one should wear it always upon the head; it is verily an embodiment of Shiva himself. O sage, what need is there of speaking further, describing this again and again?

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.11.4.36)

pūjyate santataṁ devaiḥ prāpyate ca parā gatiḥ rudrākṣa ekaḥ śirasā dhāryo bhaktyā dvijottamaiḥ

Its wearer is continually honored by the gods and attains the supreme state. The best of the twice-born should wear even a single rudraksha upon the head with devotion.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.11.4.37)

ṣaḍviṁśadbhiḥ śiromālā pañcāśaddhṛdayena tu kalākṣairbāhuvalaye arkākṣairmaṇibandhanam

A garland for the head is made with twenty-six beads; for the chest, with fifty; on the armlet, as many as the moon's digits; and at the wrist, as many as the twelve Suns.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.11.4.38)

aṣṭottaraśatairmālā pañcāśadbhiḥ ṣaḍānana athavā saptaviṁśatyā kṛtvā rudrākṣamālikām

O six-faced one, a rosary is made with one hundred and eight beads, or with fifty; or, having made a rudraksha rosary of twenty-seven beads —

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.11.4.39)

dhāraṇādvā japādvāpi hyanantaṁ phalamaśnute aṣṭottaraśatairmālā rudrākṣairdhāryate yadi

by wearing it, or by using it for japa, one obtains boundless fruit. If a rosary of one hundred and eight rudrakshas is worn,

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.11.4.40)

kṣaṇe kṣaṇe'śvamedhasya phalaṁ prāpnoti ṣaṇmukha triḥsaptakulamuddhṛtya śivaloke mahīyate

then, O Shanmukha, one obtains, moment by moment, the fruit of a horse-sacrifice; and having delivered twenty-one generations of one's lineage, one is exalted in the world of Shiva.
