Chapter 2All chaptersChapter 4

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.12.3.1)

nārada uvāca svāminsarvajagannātha saṁśayo'sti mama prabho catuḥṣaṣṭikalābhijña pātakādyogavidvara

Narada said: O Lord, Master of all the worlds, O Lord who knows the sixty-four arts, O best among the knowers of yoga, I have a doubt.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.12.3.2)

mucyate kena puṇyena brahmarūpaḥ kathaṁ bhavet dehaśca devatārūpo mantrarūpo viśeṣataḥ

By what merit is one freed from sin, and how does one become of the very form of Brahman — the body becoming, in particular, of the form of the deity and of the form of the mantra?

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.12.3.3)

karma tacchrotumicchāmi nyāsaṁ ca vidhipūrvakam ṛṣiśchando'dhidaivaṁ ca dhyānaṁ ca vidhivadvibho

O Lord, I wish to hear of that rite, the nyasa performed according to due procedure, and its sage, meter, presiding deity, and meditation-verse, all in proper form.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.12.3.4)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca astyekaṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ gāyatrīkavacaṁ tathā paṭhanāddhāraṇānmartyaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

Shri Narayana said: There exists one supreme and secret text, the Gayatri-kavacha; by reciting or wearing it a mortal is freed from all sins.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.12.3.5)

sarvānkāmānavāpnoti devīrūpaśca jāyate gāyatrīkavacasyāsya brahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ

He obtains all his desires and becomes of the very form of the Devi. Of this Gayatri-kavacha, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara —

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.12.3.6)

ṛṣayo ṛgyajuḥsāmātharvaśchandāṁsi nārada brahmarūpā devatoktā gāyatrī paramā kalā

— O Narada, are its sages; the Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva are its meters; its deity is declared to be of the form of Brahman, and Gayatri is its supreme power.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.12.3.7)

tadbījaṁ bharga ityeṣā śaktiruktā manīṣibhiḥ kīlakaṁ ca dhiyaḥ proktaṁ mokṣārthe viniyojanam

'Bhargaḥ' is declared to be its seed (bīja); the wise have called this its power (śakti); 'dhiyaḥ' is declared to be its pin (kīlaka); its application is for the sake of liberation.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.12.3.8)

caturbhirhṛdayaṁ proktaṁ tribhirvarṇeḥ śiraḥ smṛtam caturbhiḥ syācchikhā paścāt tribhistu kavacaṁ smṛtam

With four syllables the heart is declared, with three syllables the head is remembered; then with four syllables comes the tuft, and with three syllables the armor is remembered.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.12.3.9)

caturbhirnetramuddiṣṭaṁ caturbhiḥ syāttadastrakam atha dhyānaṁ pravakṣyāmi sādhakābhīṣṭadāyakam

With four syllables the eyes are designated, and with four syllables comes the weapon. Now I shall declare the meditation-verse, which grants the aspirant's cherished desire.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.12.3.10)

muktāvidrumahemanīladhavalacchāyairmukhaistrīkṣaṇai- ryuktāmindunibaddharatnamukuṭāṁ tattvārthavarṇātmikām gāyatrīṁ varadābhayāṅkuśakaśāḥ śubhraṁ kapālaṁ guṇaṁ śaṅkhaṁ cakramathāravindayugalaṁ hastairvahantīṁ bhaje

I worship that Gayatri, whose faces gleam with the hues of pearl, coral, gold, sapphire, and white, each face bearing three eyes, wearing a jeweled crown set with the crescent moon, whose very form is made of the syllables expressing the meaning of the tattvas — who bears in her hands the gesture of boon-granting, the gesture of fearlessness, a goad, a whip, a white skull-bowl, a rosary, a conch, a discus, and a pair of lotuses.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.12.3.11)

ūrdhvaṁ brahmāṇī me rakṣedadhastādvaiṣṇavī tathā evaṁ daśa diśo rakṣetsarvāṅgaṁ bhuvaneśvarī
