The Birth of Vritra After Trishira's Death

Chapter 1All chaptersChapter 3

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.2.1)

vyāsa uvāca | atha sa lobhamupetya surādhipaḥ samadhigamya gajāsanasaṁsthitaḥ | triśirasaṁ prati duṣṭamatistadā munimapaśyadameyaparākramam

Vyasa said: Then, seized by greed and mounted upon his elephant throne, the lord of the gods, his mind now corrupted, approached and beheld the sage Trishira, whose might was immeasurable.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.2.2)

tamabhivīkṣya dṛḍhāsanasaṁsthitaṁ jitagiraṁ susamādhivaśaṁ gatam | ravivibhāvasusannibhamojasā surapatiḥ paramāpadamabhyagāt

Seeing him seated firm and unmoving, his speech restrained, absorbed in deep meditation, blazing like the sun and fire together, the king of the gods fell into utter dread.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.2.3)

kathamasau vinihantumaho mayā munirapāpamatiḥ kila sammataḥ | ripurayaṁ susamiddhatapobalaḥ kathamupekṣya ihāsanakāmukaḥ

'Alas, how can I possibly slay this sage, sinless and held in honor? Yet he is my enemy, blazing with the power of his austerity — how, craving my throne as he does, can I simply overlook him?'

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.2.4)

iti vicintya paviṁ paramāyudhaṁ prati mumoca muniṁ tapasi sthitam | śaśidivākarasannibhamāśugaṁ triśirasaṁ surasaṅghapatiḥ svayam

Thinking this, the lord of the assembled gods himself hurled his supreme weapon — the swift thunderbolt, radiant as the moon and sun — at Trishira, who remained absorbed in his austerity.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.2.5)

tadabhighātahataḥ sa dharātale kila papāta mamāra ca tāpasaḥ | śikhariṇaḥ śikharaṁ kuliśārditaṁ nipatitaṁ bhuvi cādbhutadarśanam

Struck down by that blow, the ascetic fell to the earth and died — like a mountain's peak, shattered by the thunderbolt, tumbling to the ground, a sight both wondrous and terrible.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.2.6)

taṁ nihatya mudamāpa sureśa\- ścukruśuśca munayastu saṁsthitāḥ | hā hateti bhṛśamārtaniḥsvanāḥ kiṁ kṛtaṁ śatamakhena pāpinā

Having slain him, the lord of the gods rejoiced, but the sages standing there cried out in deep anguish: 'Alas, he is slain! What has the sinful Shatamakha done!'

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.2.7)

vināparādhaṁ tapasāṁ nidhirhataḥ śacīpatiḥ pāpamatirdurātmā | phalaṁ kilāyaṁ tarasā kṛtasya prāpnotu pāpī hananodbhavasya

'Without any fault of his own, this treasure-house of austerity has been slain; may this sinful, evil-minded Shachi's lord swiftly reap the fruit born of this act of killing!'

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.2.8)

taṁ nihatya tarasā surarājo nirjagāma nijamandiramāśu | sa hato'pi virarāja mahātmā jīvamāna iva tejasāṁ nidhiḥ

Having swiftly slain him, the king of the gods hastened straight back to his own palace; yet even in death, that great-souled treasure of splendor continued to shine as though still alive.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.2.9)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā patitaṁ bhūmau jīvantamiva vṛtrahā | cintāmāpātikhinnāṅgaḥ kiṁ vā jīvedayaṁ punaḥ

Seeing him lying on the ground yet appearing still alive, Vritrahan (Indra), his body weighed down with anxiety, wondered to himself: 'Could this one perhaps come back to life?'

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.2.10)

vimṛśya manasātīva takṣāṇaṁ purataḥ sthitam | maghavā vīkṣya taṁ prāha svakāryasadṛśaṁ vacaḥ

Reflecting deeply, Maghavan, seeing the carpenter Taksha standing before him, spoke words suited to his own purpose.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.2.11)

takṣaṁśchindhi śirāṁsyasya kuruṣva vacanaṁ mama | mā jīvatu mahātejā bhāti jīvanniva svayam

'O carpenter, sever his heads — obey my word. Let this greatly radiant one not remain alive; he still looks as if he lives.'

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.2.12)

ityākarṇya vacastasya takṣovāca vigarhayan | takṣovāca | mahāskandho bhṛśaṁ bhāti paraśurna tariṣyati

Hearing his words, the carpenter spoke back in reproach. The carpenter said: 'His shoulders are exceedingly massive — my axe will not manage to cut through.'

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.2.13)

tato nāhaṁ kariṣyāmi kāryametadvigarhitam | tvayā vai ninditaṁ karma kṛtaṁ sadbhirvigarhitam

'Therefore I will not perform this reprehensible act. It is you who have already done this blameworthy deed, condemned by the virtuous.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.2.14)

ahaṁ bibhemi pāpādvai mṛtasyaiva ca māraṇe | mṛto'yaṁ munirastyeva śirasaḥ kṛntanena kim

'I fear the sin of killing one who is already dead. This sage is already dead — what use is there in severing his heads?'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.2.15)

bhayaṁ kiṁ te'tra sañjātaṁ pākaśāsana kathyatām | indra uvāca | sajīva iva deho'yamābhāti viśadākṛtiḥ

'What fear has arisen in you here, O Pakashasana? Tell me.' Indra said: 'This body appears as though still alive, its form so clear and vivid.'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.2.16)

tasmādbibhemi mā jīvenmuniḥ śatrurayaṁ mama | takṣovāca | nātra kiṁ trapase vidvan krūreṇānena karmaṇā

'That is why I fear — let this sage, my enemy, not come back to life.' The carpenter said: 'Are you not ashamed, O learned one, of this cruel deed?'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.2.17)

ṛṣiputramimaṁ hatvā brahmahatyābhayaṁ na kim | indra uvāca | prāyaścittaṁ kariṣyāmi paścātpāpakṣayāya vai

'Having killed this son of a sage, do you feel no fear of the sin of killing a brahmin?' Indra said: 'I shall perform expiation afterward, to destroy that sin.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.2.18)

śatrustu sarvathā vadhyaśchalenāpi mahāmate | takṣovāca | tvaṁ lobhābhihataḥ pāpaṁ karoṣi maghavanniha

'An enemy, O wise one, must by every means be destroyed — even by deceit.' The carpenter said: 'You, O Maghavan, overcome by greed, are committing sin here.'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.2.19)

taṁ vināhaṁ kathaṁ pāpaṁ karomi vada me vibho | indra uvāca | makheṣu khalu bhāgaṁ te kariṣyāmi sadaiva hi

'Apart from that, how am I sinning? Tell me, O lord.' Indra said: 'I shall grant you, forever, a share in every sacrifice.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.2.20)

śiraḥ paśostu te bhāgaṁ yajñe dāsyanti mānavāḥ | śulkenānena chindhi tvaṁ śirāṁsyasya kuru priyam

'In every sacrifice, men shall give you the animal's head as your portion; for this price, sever his heads and grant me my wish.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.2.21)

vyāsa uvāca | etacchrutvā mahendrasya vacastakṣā mudānvitaḥ | kuṭhāreṇa śirāṁsyasya cakarta sudṛḍhena hi

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of mighty Indra, the carpenter, now delighted, cut off his heads with a sturdy axe.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.2.22)

chinnāni trīṇi śīrṣāṇi patitāni yadā bhuvi | tebhyastu pakṣiṇaḥ kṣipraṁ viniṣpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ

When the three severed heads fell to the ground, birds by the thousand suddenly burst forth from them.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.2.23)

kalaviṅkāstittirayastathaiva ca kapiñjalāḥ | pṛthakpṛthagviniṣpeturmukhatastarasā tadā

Sparrows, partridges, and francolins burst forth quickly, each kind separately from its own mouth.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.2.24)

yena vedānadhīte sma somaṁ ca pibate tathā | tasmādvaktrātkilotpetuḥ sadya eva kapiñjalāḥ

From the mouth with which he had recited the Vedas and drunk soma, francolins sprang forth in that very instant.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.2.25)

yena sarvā diśaḥ kāmaṁ pibanniva nirīkṣate | tasmāttu tittirāstatra niḥsṛtāstigmatejasaḥ

From the mouth with which he had gazed freely at every direction, as though drinking them in, sharp-eyed partridges of fierce brilliance emerged.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.2.26)

yatsurāpaṁ tu tadvaktraṁ tasmāttu caṭakāḥ kila | viniṣpetustriśirasa evaṁ te vihagā nṛpa

And from the mouth that had drunk wine, sparrows indeed sprang forth. Thus, O king, these birds came into being from Trishira.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.2.27)

evaṁviniḥsṛtāndṛṣṭvā tebhyaḥ śakrastadāṇḍajān | mumoda manasā rājan jagāma tridivaṁ punaḥ

Seeing these birds thus sprung forth from him, Shakra rejoiced in his heart, O king, and went back once more to the triple heaven.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.2.28)

gate śakre tu takṣāpi svagṛhaṁ tarasā yayau | yajñabhāgaṁ paraṁ labdhvā mudamāpa mahīpate

When Shakra had gone, the carpenter too made his way swiftly back home; having gained that fine share of the sacrifice, O king, he rejoiced.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.2.29)

indro'tha svagṛhaṁ gatvā hatvā śatruṁ mahābalam | mene kṛtārthamātmānaṁ brahmahatyāmacintayan

Indra then returned to his own home and, having slain his mighty enemy, considered himself to have achieved his purpose, giving no thought at all to the sin of killing a brahmin.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.2.30)

taṁ śrutvā nihataṁ tvaṣṭā putraṁ paramadhārmikam | cukopātīva manasā vacanaṁ cedamabravīt

Hearing that his supremely righteous son had been killed, Tvashtri grew furious at heart and spoke these words.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.2.31)

anāgasaṁ muniṁ yasmātputraṁ nihatavānmama | tasmādutpādayiṣyāmi tadvadhārthaṁ sutaṁ punaḥ

'Since he has slain my innocent, sage-like son, I shall now beget another son for the sole purpose of destroying him.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.2.32)

surāḥ paśyantu me vīryaṁ tapasaśca balaṁ tathā | jānātu sarvaṁ pāpātmā svakṛtasya phalaṁ mahat

'Let the gods behold my valor and the power of my austerity; let that sinful soul come to know fully the great fruit of his own deed.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.2.33)

ityuktvāgniṁ juhāvātha mantrairātharvaṇoditaiḥ | putrasyotpādanārthāya tvaṣṭā krodhasamākulaḥ

Having said this, Tvashtri, overwhelmed with rage, offered oblations into the fire with mantras drawn from the Atharva Veda, for the sake of begetting a son.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.2.34)

kṛte home'ṣṭarātraṁ tu sandīptācca vibhāvasoḥ | prādurbabhūva tarasā puruṣaḥ pāvakopamaḥ

When the fire-offering had continued for eight nights, from the blazing flames a being resembling fire itself suddenly appeared.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.2.35)

taṁ dṛṣṭvāgre sutaṁ tvaṣṭā tejobalasamanvitam | vegātprakaṭitaṁ vahnerdīpyamānamivānalam

Seeing before him that son, endowed with the strength of splendor, swiftly manifested from the fire and blazing like fire itself,

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.2.36)

uvāca vacanaṁ tvaṣṭā sutaṁ vīkṣya puraḥsthitam | indraśatro vivardhasva pratāpāttapaso mama

Tvashtri, beholding his son standing before him, said: 'O foe of Indra, grow mighty through the power of my austerity!'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.2.37)

ityukte vacane tvaṣṭrā krodhaprajvalitena ca | so'vardhata divaṁ stabdhvā vaiśvānarasamadyutiḥ

When Tvashtri, blazing with anger, spoke these words, that son began to grow, filling the sky, radiant as Vaishvanara, the fire itself.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.2.38)

jātaḥ sa parvatākāraḥ kālamṛtyusamaḥ svarāṭ | kiṁ karomīti taṁ prāha pitaraṁ paramāturam

Born mountain-shaped, resembling death and time itself, self-sovereign, he spoke to his deeply anguished father: 'What shall I do?'

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.2.39)

kuru me nāmakaṁ nātha kāryaṁ kathaya suvrata | cintāturo'si kasmāttvaṁ brūhi me śokakāraṇam

'Give me a name, my lord, and tell me my task, O keeper of noble vows. Why are you so troubled with anxiety? Tell me the cause of your grief.'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.2.40)

nāśayāmyadya te śokamiti me vratamāhitam | tena jātena kiṁ bhūyaḥ pitā bhavati duḥkhitaḥ

'I shall this very day destroy your sorrow — this is now my firm vow. What is the use of being born as a son, if the father still remains grieving?'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.2.41)

pibāmi sāgaraṁ sadyaścūrṇayāmi dharādharān | udyantaṁ vārayāmyadya taraṇiṁ tigmatejasam

'I shall drink up the ocean this instant, crush the mountains to dust, and this very day stop the rising sun of fierce splendor in its course.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.2.42)

hanmīndraṁ sasuraṁ sadyo yamaṁ vā devatāntaram | kṣipāmi sāgare sarvānsamutpāṭya ca medinīm

'I shall at once slay Indra together with all the gods, or Yama, or any other deity; I shall tear up the very earth and hurl them all into the ocean.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.2.43)

ityākarṇya vacastasya tvaṣṭā putrasya peśalam | pratyuvācātimuditastaṁ sutaṁ parvatopamam

Hearing these fine words from his son, Tvashtri, greatly delighted, replied to that mountain-like son of his.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.2.44)

vṛjināttrātumadhunā yasmācchakto'si putraka | tasmādvṛtra iti khyātaṁ tava nāma bhaviṣyati

'Since you, my son, are now capable of shielding me from calamity, your name shall henceforth become renowned as Vritra.'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.2.45)

bhrātā tava mahābhāga triśirā nāma tāpasaḥ | trīṇi tasya ca śīrṣāṇi hyabhavanvīryavanti ca

'You had a brother, O greatly fortunate one, an ascetic named Trishira; his three heads, too, were full of valor.'

'He knew the essence of the Vedas and the Vedangas, was skilled in every branch of learning, and remained mostly absorbed in austerity that astonished all three worlds.'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.2.47)

'He was slain, just now, by Shakra's blow of the thunderbolt; without any fault of his own, his heads were suddenly severed.'

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.2.48)

tasmāttvaṁ puruṣavyāghra jahi śakraṁ kṛtāgasam | brahmahatyāyutaṁ pāpaṁ nistrapaṁ durmatiṁ śaṭham

'Therefore, O tiger among men, slay that offender Shakra — shameless, evil-minded, deceitful, and burdened with the sin of killing a brahmin.'

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.2.49)

ityuktvā ca tadā tvaṣṭā putraśokasamākulaḥ | āyudhāni ca divyāni cakāra vividhāni ca

Having spoken thus, Tvashtri, overwhelmed with grief for his lost son, then fashioned a variety of divine weapons.

He gave him powerful weapons for the slaying of the thousand-eyed one (Indra) — sword, trident, mace, javelin, lance, and more.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.2.51)
