The Marriage of Ekavira and Ekavali
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.23.1)
व्यास उवाच । तस्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा रमापुत्रः प्रतापवान् । प्रफुल्लवदनाम्भोजस्तामुवाच विशाम्पते
vyāsa uvāca | tasyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā ramāputraḥ pratāpavān | praphullavadanāmbhojastāmuvāca viśāmpate
Vyasa said: Hearing her words, the valiant son of Rama, his lotus-face blooming with joy, spoke to her, O lord of men.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.23.2)
राजोवाच । रम्भोरु यस्त्वया पृष्टो वृत्तान्तो विशदाक्षरः । हेहयोऽहं चैकवीरनाम्ना सिन्धुसुतासुतः
rājovāca | rambhoru yastvayā pṛṣṭo vṛttānto viśadākṣaraḥ | hehayo'haṁ caikavīranāmnā sindhusutāsutaḥ
The king said: 'O plantain-thighed one, the account you asked of me, in clear words, is this: I am the Haihaya named Ekavira, son of Sindhusuta.'
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.23.3)
मनो मे यत्त्वया नूनं परतन्त्रं कृतं किल । किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि विरहेणातिपीडितः
mano me yattvayā nūnaṁ paratantraṁ kṛtaṁ kila | kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi viraheṇātipīḍitaḥ
'My mind has surely become dependent upon you; what shall I do, where shall I go, tormented as I am by this separation?'
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.23.4)
प्रथमं रूपमाख्यातं सर्वलोकातिगं त्वया । तेन मे विह्वलं जातं कामबाणहतं मनः
prathamaṁ rūpamākhyātaṁ sarvalokātigaṁ tvayā | tena me vihvalaṁ jātaṁ kāmabāṇahataṁ manaḥ
'First you described her beauty, surpassing all the world; by that my mind became distraught, struck by the arrow of desire.'
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.23.5)
ततस्तस्या गुणाः प्रोक्तास्तैस्तु चित्तं हृतं पुनः । यत्त्वयोक्तं पुनर्वाक्यं तेन मे विस्मयोऽभवत्
tatastasyā guṇāḥ proktāstaistu cittaṁ hṛtaṁ punaḥ | yattvayoktaṁ punarvākyaṁ tena me vismayo'bhavat
'Then you told me of her virtues, and by them my heart was stolen again; and by the further words you spoke, I was filled with wonder.'
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.23.6)
एकावल्या वचः प्रोक्तं दानवाग्रे मया वृतः । हैहयस्तं विना नान्यं वृणोमीति विनिश्चयः
ekāvalyā vacaḥ proktaṁ dānavāgre mayā vṛtaḥ | haihayastaṁ vinā nānyaṁ vṛṇomīti viniścayaḥ
'Ekavali's own words, spoken before the demon — "I have chosen the Haihaya; other than him I choose no one" — this resolve of hers you told me.'
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.23.7)
तेन वाक्येन तन्वङ्गि भृत्योऽहमधुना कृतः । त्वया तस्याः सुकेशान्ते ब्रूहि किं करवाणि वाम्
tena vākyena tanvaṅgi bhṛtyo'hamadhunā kṛtaḥ | tvayā tasyāḥ sukeśānte brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi vām
'By that word, O slender one, I have now become her servant; tell me, O lovely-haired one, what I may do for you both.'
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.23.8)
स्थानं तस्य न जानामि राक्षसस्य दुरात्मनः । गतिर्मे नास्ति गमने पुरे तस्मिन्सुलोचने
sthānaṁ tasya na jānāmi rākṣasasya durātmanaḥ | gatirme nāsti gamane pure tasminsulocane
'I do not know the location of that evil rakshasa; I have no way of reaching that city, O fair-eyed one.'
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.23.9)
वद मां त्वं विशालाक्षि तत्र प्रापयितुं क्षमा । प्रापयाशु सखी ते सा यत्र तिष्ठति सुन्दरी
vada māṁ tvaṁ viśālākṣi tatra prāpayituṁ kṣamā | prāpayāśu sakhī te sā yatra tiṣṭhati sundarī
'Tell me, O large-eyed one, are you able to lead me there? Bring me quickly to where your lovely friend now stays.'
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.23.10)
हत्वा तं राक्षसं क्रूरं मोचयिष्यामि साम्प्रतम् । विवशां शोकसन्तप्तां राजपुत्रीं तव प्रियाम्
hatvā taṁ rākṣasaṁ krūraṁ mocayiṣyāmi sāmpratam | vivaśāṁ śokasantaptāṁ rājaputrīṁ tava priyām
'Having slain that cruel rakshasa, I shall now free your beloved princess-friend, helpless and consumed by grief.'
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.23.11)
विमुक्तदुःखां कृत्वाऽऽशु प्रापयिष्यामि ते पुरम् । पित्रे चास्याः प्रदास्यामि कन्यामेकावलीमहम्
vimuktaduḥkhāṁ kṛtvā''śu prāpayiṣyāmi te puram | pitre cāsyāḥ pradāsyāmi kanyāmekāvalīmaham
'Having freed her from sorrow, I shall swiftly bring her to your city; and before her father I shall present myself for the maiden Ekavali.'
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.23.12)
पश्चाद्विवाहं कर्तासौ राजा पुत्र्याः परन्तपः । एवं ते मनसः कामो मम चापि प्रियंवदे
paścādvivāhaṁ kartāsau rājā putryāḥ parantapaḥ | evaṁ te manasaḥ kāmo mama cāpi priyaṁvade
'Then that foe-scorching king will perform his daughter's marriage; thus, O sweet-speaking one, both your heart's desire and mine will be fulfilled.'
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.23.13)
भविष्यति स सम्पूर्णः साधनेन तवाधुना । दर्शयाशु पुरं तस्य पश्य मे त्वं पराक्रमम्
bhaviṣyati sa sampūrṇaḥ sādhanena tavādhunā | darśayāśu puraṁ tasya paśya me tvaṁ parākramam
'This will now be fully accomplished with your help; show me his city at once, and behold my valor —'
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.23.14)
यथा हन्मि दुराचारं परदारापहारकम् । तथा कुरु प्रियं कर्तुं शक्तासि वरवर्णिनि
yathā hanmi durācāraṁ paradārāpahārakam | tathā kuru priyaṁ kartuṁ śaktāsi varavarṇini
'—as I slay that wicked abductor of another's bride. O fair one, since you are able to bring about this good, do so.'
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.23.15)
मार्गं दर्शय तस्याद्य पुरस्य दुर्गमस्य च । व्यास उवाच । तन्निशम्य प्रियं वाक्यं मुदिता च यशोवती
mārgaṁ darśaya tasyādya purasya durgamasya ca | vyāsa uvāca | tanniśamya priyaṁ vākyaṁ muditā ca yaśovatī
'Show me today the path to his inaccessible city.' Vyasa said: Hearing these welcome words, Yashovati rejoiced,
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.23.16)
तमुवाच रमापुत्रं गमनोपायमादरात् । मन्त्रं गृहाण राजेन्द्र भगवत्यास्तु सिद्धिदम्
tamuvāca ramāputraṁ gamanopāyamādarāt | mantraṁ gṛhāṇa rājendra bhagavatyāstu siddhidam
and she respectfully told the son of Rama the means of going there: 'Receive, O king, the Goddess's mantra, which grants accomplishment.'
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.23.17)
दर्शयिष्यामि तस्याद्य पुरं राक्षसपालितम् । सज्जो भव महाभाग गमनाय मया सह
darśayiṣyāmi tasyādya puraṁ rākṣasapālitam | sajjo bhava mahābhāga gamanāya mayā saha
'Today I shall show you his city, ruled by rakshasas; be ready, O most fortunate one, to travel together with me.'
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.23.18)
सैन्येन महता युक्तस्तत्र युद्धं भविष्यति । कालकेतुर्महावीरो राक्षसैर्बलिभिर्वृतः
sainyena mahatā yuktastatra yuddhaṁ bhaviṣyati | kālaketurmahāvīro rākṣasairbalibhirvṛtaḥ
'A great battle will take place there, with his mighty army; the great hero Kalaketu is surrounded by powerful rakshasas.'
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.23.19)
तस्मान्मन्त्रं गृहीत्वा त्वं व्रज तत्र मया सह । दर्शयिष्यामि ते मार्गं पुरस्यास्य दुरात्मनः
tasmānmantraṁ gṛhītvā tvaṁ vraja tatra mayā saha | darśayiṣyāmi te mārgaṁ purasyāsya durātmanaḥ
'Therefore, having received the mantra, go there together with me; I shall show you the path to that evil one's city.'
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.23.20)
हत्वा तं पापकर्माणं मोचयाशु च मे सखीम् । श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं वीरो मन्त्रं जग्राह सत्वरः
hatvā taṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ mocayāśu ca me sakhīm | śrutvā tadvacanaṁ vīro mantraṁ jagrāha satvaraḥ
'Having slain that sinner, free my friend at once.' Hearing these words, the hero quickly received the mantra —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.23.21)
दत्तात्रेयाद्दैवयोगात्प्राप्ताज्ज्ञानिवराच्छुभात् । योगेश्वरीमहामन्त्रं त्रिलोकीतिलकाभिधम्
dattātreyāddaivayogātprāptājjñānivarācchubhāt | yogeśvarīmahāmantraṁ trilokītilakābhidham
the mantra obtained by divine providence from Dattatreya, the excellent and auspicious knower — the great mantra of Yogeshvari, called 'the Ornament of the Three Worlds.'
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.23.22)
तेन सर्वज्ञता जाता सर्वान्तश्चारिता तथा । तया सह जगामाशु पुरं तस्य सुदुर्गमम्
tena sarvajñatā jātā sarvāntaścāritā tathā | tayā saha jagāmāśu puraṁ tasya sudurgamam
By it he gained omniscience and the power to pass unseen through all things; together with her he swiftly set out for that most inaccessible city,
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.23.23)
रक्षितं राक्षसैघोरैः पातालमिव पन्नगैः । यशोवत्या च सैन्येन महता संयुतो नृपः
rakṣitaṁ rākṣasaighoraiḥ pātālamiva pannagaiḥ | yaśovatyā ca sainyena mahatā saṁyuto nṛpaḥ
guarded by terrible rakshasas as Patala is guarded by serpents; the king, together with Yashovati and a great army, arrived there.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.23.24)
तमायान्तं समालोक्य दूतास्तस्य भयातुराः । क्रोशन्तोऽभिययुः पार्श्वं कालकेतोस्तरस्विनः
tamāyāntaṁ samālokya dūtāstasya bhayāturāḥ | krośanto'bhiyayuḥ pārśvaṁ kālaketostarasvinaḥ
Seeing him approaching, Kalaketu's messengers, terrified, ran swiftly, crying out, to Kalaketu's side.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.23.25)
तमूचुः सहसा मत्वा राक्षसं काममोहितम् । एकावलीसमीपस्थं कुर्वन्तं विनयान्बहून्
tamūcuḥ sahasā matvā rākṣasaṁ kāmamohitam | ekāvalīsamīpasthaṁ kurvantaṁ vinayānbahūn
They spoke suddenly to that rakshasa, deluded by desire, seated near Ekavali and making many pleading requests to her —
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.23.26)
दूता ऊचुः । राजन् यशोवती नारी कामिन्याः सहचारिणी । आयाति सह सैन्येन राजपुत्रेण संयुता
dūtā ūcuḥ | rājan yaśovatī nārī kāminyāḥ sahacāriṇī | āyāti saha sainyena rājaputreṇa saṁyutā
The messengers said: 'O king, Yashovati, the companion of your beloved, is coming together with an army, accompanied by a prince.'
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.23.27)
जयन्तो वा महाराज कार्तिकेयोऽथवा नु किम् । आगच्छति बलोन्मत्तो वाहिनीसहितः किल
jayanto vā mahārāja kārtikeyo'thavā nu kim | āgacchati balonmatto vāhinīsahitaḥ kila
'Is it Jayanta, O great king, or perhaps Kartikeya? He comes, drunk with strength, together with his troops.'
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.23.28)
संयत्तो भव राजेन्द्र सङ्ग्रामः समुपस्थितः । देवपुत्रेण युध्यस्व त्यज वा कमलेक्षणाम्
saṁyatto bhava rājendra saṅgrāmaḥ samupasthitaḥ | devaputreṇa yudhyasva tyaja vā kamalekṣaṇām
'Prepare yourself, O king — battle is at hand; either fight this son of a god, or give up this lotus-eyed one.'
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.23.29)
इतो दूरेऽस्ति सैन्यं तद्योजनत्रयमात्रतः । सज्जो भव महीपाल दुन्दुभिं घोषयाशु वै
ito dūre'sti sainyaṁ tadyojanatrayamātrataḥ | sajjo bhava mahīpāla dundubhiṁ ghoṣayāśu vai
'That army is only three yojanas from here; be prepared, O lord of the earth, and sound the war-drum at once.'
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.23.30)
व्यास उवाच । तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षसः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः । राक्षसान्प्रेरयामास सायुधान्सबलान्वहून्
vyāsa uvāca | teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā rākṣasaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ | rākṣasānprerayāmāsa sāyudhānsabalānvahūn
Vyasa said: Hearing their words, the rakshasa, overcome with fury, dispatched his many armed and powerful rakshasas —
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.23.31)
गच्छध्वं राक्षसाः सर्वे सम्मुखाः शस्त्रपाणयः । तानाज्ञाप्य कालकेतुः पप्रच्छ प्रणयान्वितः
gacchadhvaṁ rākṣasāḥ sarve sammukhāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ | tānājñāpya kālaketuḥ papraccha praṇayānvitaḥ
'Go forth, all you rakshasas, weapons in hand, to face them!' Having commanded them, Kalaketu, full of affection, questioned—
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.23.32)
एकावलीं समीपस्थां विवशां भृशदुःखिताम् । कोऽयमायाति तन्वङ्गि पिता ते वापरः पुमान्
ekāvalīṁ samīpasthāṁ vivaśāṁ bhṛśaduḥkhitām | ko'yamāyāti tanvaṅgi pitā te vāparaḥ pumān
—Ekavali, who sat near, helpless and deeply grieved: 'Who is this that comes, O slender one — your father, or some other man?'
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.23.33)
त्वदर्थे सैन्यसंयुक्तो ब्रूहि सत्यं कृशोदरि । पिता ते यदि सम्प्राप्तो नेतुं त्वां विरहातुरः
tvadarthe sainyasaṁyukto brūhi satyaṁ kṛśodari | pitā te yadi samprāpto netuṁ tvāṁ virahāturaḥ
'He comes for your sake with an army — tell me truly, O slender-waisted one. If it is your father, tormented by separation, come to take you back—'
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.23.34)
ज्ञात्वा ते पितरं सम्यक् सङ्ग्रामं न करोम्यहम् । आनयित्वा गृहे पूजां रत्नैर्वस्त्रैर्हयैः शुभैः
jñātvā te pitaraṁ samyak saṅgrāmaṁ na karomyaham | ānayitvā gṛhe pūjāṁ ratnairvastrairhayaiḥ śubhaiḥ
'—then, knowing him surely to be your father, I shall not do battle; I shall bring him into my house and honor him with jewels, garments, and fine horses.'
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.23.35)
करोमि तस्य चातिथ्यं गृहे प्राप्तस्य सर्वथा । अन्यश्चेद्यदि सम्प्राप्तस्तं हन्मि निशितैः शरैः
karomi tasya cātithyaṁ gṛhe prāptasya sarvathā | anyaścedyadi samprāptastaṁ hanmi niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
'I shall render him every hospitality on his arrival at my house. But if it is someone else who has come, I shall slay him with sharp arrows —'
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.23.36)
आनीतः किल कालेन मरणाय महात्मना । तस्माद्वद विशालाक्षि कोऽयमायाति मन्दधीः
ānītaḥ kila kālena maraṇāya mahātmanā | tasmādvada viśālākṣi ko'yamāyāti mandadhīḥ
'—for he has surely been brought here by Fate to his own death. Therefore tell me, O large-eyed one, who is this dull-witted one who comes,'
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.23.37)
अज्ञात्वा मां दुराधर्षं कालरूपं महाबलम् । एकावल्युवाच । न जानेऽहं महाभाग कोऽयमायाति सत्वरः
ajñātvā māṁ durādharṣaṁ kālarūpaṁ mahābalam | ekāvalyuvāca | na jāne'haṁ mahābhāga ko'yamāyāti satvaraḥ
'—not knowing me, unassailable, of the form of Death, mighty.' Ekavali said: 'I do not know, O most fortunate one, who this is that comes so swiftly.'
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.23.38)
नमेऽस्ति विदितः कोऽपि स्थितायास्तव बन्धने । नायं पिता मे न भ्राता कोऽप्यन्योऽस्ति महाबलः
name'sti viditaḥ ko'pi sthitāyāstava bandhane | nāyaṁ pitā me na bhrātā ko'pyanyo'sti mahābalaḥ
'Held captive here by you, I know no one; he is not my father, nor my brother — he is some other mighty one.'
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.23.39)
किमर्थमिह चायाति नाहं वेद विनिश्चयम् । दैत्य उवाच । एवं वदन्त्यमी दूता वयस्या ते यशोवती
kimarthamiha cāyāti nāhaṁ veda viniścayam | daitya uvāca | evaṁ vadantyamī dūtā vayasyā te yaśovatī
'For what reason he comes here I do not know for certain.' The demon said: 'These messengers say that your friend Yashovati —'
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.23.40)
समानीय च तं वीरमागतेति कृतोद्यमा । क्व गता सा सखी कान्ते विदग्धा कार्यनिश्चये
samānīya ca taṁ vīramāgateti kṛtodyamā | kva gatā sā sakhī kānte vidagdhā kāryaniścaye
'—having made this effort, has brought this hero along and arrived. Where has that clever friend of yours gone, O beloved, so skilled at resolving matters?'
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.23.41)
नान्यः कोऽपि ममारातिर्यो मे प्रतिबलो भवेत् । व्यास उवाच । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे दूतास्तत्रान्ये वै समागताः
nānyaḥ ko'pi mamārātiryo me pratibalo bhavet | vyāsa uvāca | etasminnantare dūtāstatrānye vai samāgatāḥ
'I have no other enemy who could match my strength.' Vyasa said: Meanwhile, other messengers arrived there as well,
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.23.42)
ते होचुस्त्वरिता भीताः कालकेतुं गृहे स्थितम् । किं स्वस्थोऽसि महाराज समीपे सैन्यमागतम्
te hocustvaritā bhītāḥ kālaketuṁ gṛhe sthitam | kiṁ svastho'si mahārāja samīpe sainyamāgatam
and, terrified, they hastily said to Kalaketu, still seated in his house: 'O great king! Are you still at ease? The army has drawn near!'
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.23.43)
निर्गच्छ नगरात्तूर्णं सैन्येन महताऽऽवृतः । इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा कालकेतुर्महाबलः
nirgaccha nagarāttūrṇaṁ sainyena mahatā''vṛtaḥ | iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā kālaketurmahābalaḥ
'Surrounded by a great army — come out of the city at once!' Hearing their words, the mighty Kalaketu —
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.23.44)
रथमारुह्य त्वरितो निर्ययौ स्वपुराद्बहिः । एकवीरोऽपि सहसा हयारूढः प्रतापवान्
rathamāruhya tvarito niryayau svapurādbahiḥ | ekavīro'pi sahasā hayārūḍhaḥ pratāpavān
—swiftly mounted his chariot and went out from his city; and the valiant Ekavira too, at once mounted on horseback,
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.23.45)
आगतस्तत्र कामिन्या विरहेण समाकुलः । युद्धं तयोरभूत्तत्र वृत्रवासवयोरिव
āgatastatra kāminyā viraheṇa samākulaḥ | yuddhaṁ tayorabhūttatra vṛtravāsavayoriva
—distressed by separation from his beloved, had come there. A battle broke out between the two, like that between Vritra and Vasava (Indra).
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.23.46)
शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैरादीपितदिगन्तरम् । वर्तमाने तदा युद्धे कातराणां भयावहे
śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairādīpitadigantaram | vartamāne tadā yuddhe kātarāṇāṁ bhayāvahe
With weapons and missiles unleashed in many ways, the horizon blazed with fire; and as that battle raged, terrifying to the timid —
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.23.47)
गदया ताडयामास दैत्यं सिन्धुसुतासुतः । स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां वज्राहत इवाचलः
gadayā tāḍayāmāsa daityaṁ sindhusutāsutaḥ | sa gatāsuḥ papātorvyāṁ vajrāhata ivācalaḥ
—the son of Sindhusuta struck the demon with his mace; he fell lifeless to the ground, like a mountain struck by the thunderbolt.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.23.48)
पलायित्वा गताः सर्वे राक्षसा भयपीडिताः । यशोवती ततो गत्वा वेगादेकावलीं तदा
palāyitvā gatāḥ sarve rākṣasā bhayapīḍitāḥ | yaśovatī tato gatvā vegādekāvalīṁ tadā
All the rakshasas, overcome with fear, fled away; then Yashovati went swiftly to Ekavali,
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.23.49)
उवाच मधुरां वाणीं विस्मिता मुदिता भृशम् । एह्यालि नृपपुत्रेण दानवोऽसौ निपातितः
uvāca madhurāṁ vāṇīṁ vismitā muditā bhṛśam | ehyāli nṛpaputreṇa dānavo'sau nipātitaḥ
and, greatly astonished and overjoyed, spoke to her in sweet words: 'Come, friend! That demon has been struck down by the prince!'
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.23.50)
एकवीरेण धीरेण युद्धं कृत्वा सुदारुणम् । स्कन्धावारेऽप्यसौ राजा तिष्ठत्यद्य श्रमातुरः
ekavīreṇa dhīreṇa yuddhaṁ kṛtvā sudāruṇam | skandhāvāre'pyasau rājā tiṣṭhatyadya śramāturaḥ
'The resolute Ekavira, after waging a most terrible battle, has done this; that king now rests today in the camp, weary from the fight.'
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.23.51)
दर्शनं काङ्क्षमाणस्ते श्रुतरूपगुणस्तव । पश्य तं कुटिलापाङ्गि मनोभवसमं नृपम्
darśanaṁ kāṅkṣamāṇaste śrutarūpaguṇastava | paśya taṁ kuṭilāpāṅgi manobhavasamaṁ nṛpam
'Having heard of your beauty and virtues, he longs to see you; behold him, O one of the curved glance — that king, equal to Kama in form.'
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.23.52)
कथिता त्वं मया पूर्वं तस्याग्रे जाह्नवीतटे । पूर्णानुरागः सञ्जातस्तेनासौ विरहातुरः
kathitā tvaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ tasyāgre jāhnavītaṭe | pūrṇānurāgaḥ sañjātastenāsau virahāturaḥ
'I told him of you before, on the bank of the Ganga; a full passion arose in him then, by which he has been tormented with longing.'
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.23.53)
वाञ्छति त्वां चारुरूपां द्रष्टुं नृपतिनन्दनः । सा तस्या वचनं श्रुत्वा गमनाय मनो दधे
vāñchati tvāṁ cārurūpāṁ draṣṭuṁ nṛpatinandanaḥ | sā tasyā vacanaṁ śrutvā gamanāya mano dadhe
'That prince longs to see you, of such lovely form.' Hearing her words, she resolved in her mind to go.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.23.54)
लज्जमाना भृशं भीत्या कौमारं प्राप्तया तया । कथं तस्य मुखं द्रक्ष्ये कुमारी ह्यवशा भृशम्
lajjamānā bhṛśaṁ bhītyā kaumāraṁ prāptayā tayā | kathaṁ tasya mukhaṁ drakṣye kumārī hyavaśā bhṛśam
Overcome with deep modesty and fear, she who had just attained maidenhood thought: 'How shall I look upon his face? I am but a maiden, utterly without recourse.'
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.23.55)
स मां गृह्णाति कामार्त इति चिन्ताकुला सती । यशोवत्या युता तत्र नरयानस्थिता ययौ
sa māṁ gṛhṇāti kāmārta iti cintākulā satī | yaśovatyā yutā tatra narayānasthitā yayau
'What if, overcome with desire, he should seize me?' — troubled by this anxiety, that virtuous one went there with Yashovati, seated in a palanquin.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.6.23.56)
स्कन्धावारेऽतिमलिना मलिनाम्बरधारिणी । तामागतां विशालाक्षीं दृष्ट्वा राजसुतोऽब्रवीत्
skandhāvāre'timalinā malināmbaradhāriṇī | tāmāgatāṁ viśālākṣīṁ dṛṣṭvā rājasuto'bravīt
Arriving at the camp, greatly soiled and clad in soiled garments, that large-eyed girl was seen by the prince, who said —

दर्शनं देहि तन्वङ्गि तृषिते नयने मम । कामातुरं च तं वीक्ष्य तां च लज्जाभरावृताम्
darśanaṁ dehi tanvaṅgi tṛṣite nayane mama | kāmāturaṁ ca taṁ vīkṣya tāṁ ca lajjābharāvṛtām
'O slender one, grant a sight of yourself to my thirsting eyes.' Seeing him tormented by desire, and her overwhelmed with modesty,
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.6.23.58)
नीतिज्ञा शिष्टमार्गज्ञा तमुवाच यशोवती । राजपुत्र पिताप्यस्यास्त्वामेनां दातुमिच्छति
nītijñā śiṣṭamārgajñā tamuvāca yaśovatī | rājaputra pitāpyasyāstvāmenāṁ dātumicchati
Yashovati, versed in propriety and the way of the virtuous, said to him: 'O prince, her father too wishes to give her to you.'
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.6.23.59)
एषापि त्वद्वशा नूनं भविता सङ्गमस्तव । कालं प्रतीक्ष्य राजेन्द्र नयैनां पितुरन्तिकम्
eṣāpi tvadvaśā nūnaṁ bhavitā saṅgamastava | kālaṁ pratīkṣya rājendra nayaināṁ piturantikam
'She too will surely come to be yours — your union will happen. Awaiting the proper time, O king, take her now to her father —'
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.6.23.60)
स विवाहविधिं कृत्वा दास्यतीति विनिश्चयः । स तस्या वचनं तथ्यं मत्वा सैन्यसमन्वितः
sa vivāhavidhiṁ kṛtvā dāsyatīti viniścayaḥ | sa tasyā vacanaṁ tathyaṁ matvā sainyasamanvitaḥ
'—he, performing the marriage rites, will surely give her to you.' Accepting her true words, he, together with his army,
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.6.23.61)
समेतः कामिनीभ्यां तु ययौ तत्पितुराश्रमम् । राजपुत्रीं तथायातां श्रुत्वा प्रेमसमन्वितः
sametaḥ kāminībhyāṁ tu yayau tatpiturāśramam | rājaputrīṁ tathāyātāṁ śrutvā premasamanvitaḥ
went with the two women toward her father's hermitage. Hearing that his daughter, the princess, had thus arrived, filled with love,

प्रययौ सम्मुखस्तूर्णं सचिवैः परिवेष्टितः । बहुभिर्दिवसैर्दृष्टा पुत्री सा मलिनाम्बरा
prayayau sammukhastūrṇaṁ sacivaiḥ pariveṣṭitaḥ | bahubhirdivasairdṛṣṭā putrī sā malināmbarā
her father, surrounded by his ministers, went forth swiftly to meet her; after many days he beheld his daughter, clad in soiled garments.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.6.23.63)
यशोवत्या तु वृत्तान्तः कथितो विस्तरात्पुनः । एकवीरं मिलित्वासौ गृहमानीय चादरात्
yaśovatyā tu vṛttāntaḥ kathito vistarātpunaḥ | ekavīraṁ militvāsau gṛhamānīya cādarāt
Yashovati then related the whole account in full detail once more. Meeting Ekavira, her father, with great respect, brought him into his house,
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.6.23.64)
पुण्येऽह्नि कारयामास विवाहं विधिपूर्वकम् । पारिबर्हं ततो दत्त्वा सम्पूज्य विधिवत्तदा
puṇye'hni kārayāmāsa vivāhaṁ vidhipūrvakam | pāribarhaṁ tato dattvā sampūjya vidhivattadā
and on an auspicious day had the marriage performed according to due rite; then, giving the bridal gifts and having honored him properly,

पुत्रीं विसर्जयामास यशोवत्या समन्विताम् । एवं विवाहे संवृत्ते रमापुत्रो मुदान्वितः
putrīṁ visarjayāmāsa yaśovatyā samanvitām | evaṁ vivāhe saṁvṛtte ramāputro mudānvitaḥ
he sent forth his daughter, together with Yashovati. Thus, the marriage having taken place, the son of Rama, filled with joy,

गृहं प्राप्य बहून्भोगाम्बुभुजे प्रियया समम् । बभूव तस्यां पुत्रस्तु कृतवीर्याभिधः किल । तत्सुतः कार्तवीर्यस्तु वंशोऽयं कथितो मया
gṛhaṁ prāpya bahūnbhogāmbubhuje priyayā samam | babhūva tasyāṁ putrastu kṛtavīryābhidhaḥ kila | tatsutaḥ kārtavīryastu vaṁśo'yaṁ kathito mayā
reached his home and enjoyed many pleasures together with his beloved. To her was born a son named Kritavirya; his son was Kartavirya — thus I have related this lineage.
