Vyasa's Own Delusion
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.25.1)
vyāsa uvāca | vāsavī cakitā jātā śrutvā me vākyamīdṛśam | dāśeyī māmuvācedaṁ putrārthe bhṛśamāturā
Vyasa said: Vasavi, the fisherman's daughter, grew alarmed on hearing such words from me; deeply anxious for the sake of a son, she spoke to me thus —
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.25.2)
ambālikā vadhūrdhanyā kāśirājasutā suta | bhāryā vicitravīryasya vidhavā śokasaṁyutā
'My son, your fortunate sister-in-law Ambalika, daughter of the King of Kashi and wife of Vichitravirya, is now a widow, sunk in grief.'
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.25.3)
sarvalakṣaṇasampannā rūpayauvanaśālinī | tasyāṁ janaya saṅgaṁ tvaṁ kṛtvā putraṁ susammatam
'Endowed with every auspicious mark, resplendent with beauty and youth — unite with her and beget upon her a fine and worthy son.'
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.25.4)
nāndho rājādhikārī syāttasmātputra manoharam | utpādaya rājaputryāṁ vacanānmama mānada
'A blind one cannot rightly hold the kingdom; therefore, my son, at my word beget a handsome son upon this princess, O giver of honor.'
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.25.5)
ityukto'haṁ tadā mātrā sthitastatra gajāhvaye | yāvadṛtumatī jātā kāśirājasutā mune
So addressed, I remained there at Gajahvaya, O sage, until the daughter of the King of Kashi entered her fertile season.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.25.6)
ekānte śayanāgāre prāptā sā mama sannidhau | lajjamānā sukeśāntā svaśvaśrūvacanāttadā
At her mother-in-law's bidding, she, beautiful-haired and modest, came to my presence in a private bedchamber.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.25.7)
dṛṣṭvā māṁ jaṭilaṁ dāntaṁ tāpasaṁ rasavarjitam | sā svedavadanā jātā pāṇḍurā vimanā bhṛśam
Seeing me, matted-haired, self-controlled, an ascetic devoid of any charm, her face broke into a sweat, and she grew utterly disheartened and pale.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.25.8)
kupito'haṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā kāminīṁ niśi saṅgatām | vepamānāṁ sthitāṁ pārśve hyabravaṁ tāmahaṁ ruṣā
Seeing that woman, who had come to me at night, standing there trembling, I grew angry and spoke to her in wrath —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.25.9)
dṛṣṭvā māṁ yadi garveṇa pāṇḍuvarṇā samāvṛtā | ataste tanayaḥ pāṇḍurbhaviṣyati sumadhyame
'—since, seeing me, you have grown pale, O slender-waisted one, for this your son shall be born pale (pandu).'
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.25.10)
ityuktvā niśi tatraiva sthito'mbālikayā yutaḥ | bhuktvā tāṁ niśi niryātaḥ sthānamāpṛcchya mātaram
Having said this, I remained there with Ambalika that same night; having lain with her, I departed that very night, taking leave of my mother.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.25.11)
tatastābhyāṁ sutau kāle prasūtāvandhapāṇḍurau | dhṛtarāṣṭraśca pāṇḍuśca prathitau sambabhūvatuḥ
In due time, two sons were born of those two women — one blind, one pale — and they became renowned as Dhritarashtra and Pandu.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.25.12)
mātā me vimanā jātā tādṛśau vīkṣya tau sutau | tataḥ saṁvatsarasyānte māmāhūya tadābravīt
My mother grew disheartened, seeing those two sons in such condition; then, at the end of a year, she summoned me and said —
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.25.13)
dvaipāyana sutau jātau rājyayogyau na tādṛśau | anyaṁ manoharaṁ putraṁ samutpādaya me priyam
'O Dvaipayana, the two sons who were born are not fit to rule; beget for me another handsome son, my beloved.'
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.25.14)
tatheti sā mayā proktā muditā jananī tadā | ambikāṁ prārthayāmāsa sutārthe kāla āgate
'So be it,' I said; then my mother, delighted, when the time had come, entreated Ambika for the sake of a further son —
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.25.15)
putri vyāsaṁ samāliṅgya putramutpādayādbhutam | kuruvaṁśasya kartāraṁ rājyayogyaṁ varānane
'Daughter, embrace Vyasa and beget a wondrous son, one who will build the Kuru line and be fit to rule, O fair-faced one.'
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.25.16)
vadhūrlajjānvitā kiñcinnovāca vacanaṁ tadā | gato'haṁ śayanāgāre mātustadvacanānniśi
The daughter-in-law, overcome with modesty, said not a word in reply; at my mother's word I went to the bedchamber that night.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.25.17)
dāsī vicitravīryasya rūpayauvanasaṁyutā | preṣitāmbikayā tvatra vicitrābharaṇāmbarā
But Ambika had sent in her place a maidservant, endowed with beauty and youth, adorned with various ornaments and garments —
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.25.18)
candanāraktadehā sā puṣpamālāvibhūṣitā | āyātā hāvasaṁyuktā sukeśī haṁsagāminī
—her body reddened with sandal-paste, decked with garlands of flowers, coming with alluring gestures, beautiful-haired, moving with the gait of a swan.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.25.19)
paryaṅke māṁ samāveśya saṁsthitā premasaṁyutā | prasanno'haṁ tadā tasyā vilāsenābhavaṁ mune
She seated me upon the couch and remained there, full of affection; by her charming manner, O sage, I was pleased.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.25.20)
rātrau saṅkrīḍitaṁ premṇā tayā saha mayā bhṛśam | varo dattaḥ punastasyai prasannena tu nārada
That night I sported at length with her, lovingly; and, well pleased, O Narada, I granted her a further boon —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.25.21)
subhage bhavitā putraḥ sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutaḥ | surūpaḥ sarvadharmajñaḥ satyavādī śame rataḥ
'O fortunate one, your son shall be endowed with every auspicious mark — of fine form, versed in all dharma, truthful, and devoted to peace.'
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.25.22)
sa tadā viduro jātastrayaḥ putrā mayābhavan | māyā vṛddhiṁ gatā sādho parakṣetrodbhave mama
Then Vidura was born; thus three sons were fathered by me. O virtuous one, illusion grew strong within me, even though these sons had arisen in another's field.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.25.23)
vismṛtaḥ śukasambandhī virahaḥ śokakāraṇam | dṛṣṭvā trīnsvasutānkāmaṁ balino vīryasammatān
My grief over separation from Shuka was forgotten, seeing my three sons — strong and esteemed for their valor — thriving as I wished.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.25.24)

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.25.29)
