nārada uvāca | māṁ dṛṣṭvā nāradaṁ vipraṁ vismito'sau mahīpatiḥ | kva gatā mama bhāryā sā kuto'yaṁ munisattamaḥ
Narada said: Seeing me now as the Brahmin Narada, that king was astonished — 'Where has my wife gone? And where has this best of sages come from?'
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.30.2)
vilalāpa nṛpastatra hā priyeti muhurmuhuḥ | kva gatā māṁ parityajya vilapantaṁ viyoginam
The king lamented there, crying 'Alas, my beloved!' again and again: 'Where have you gone, abandoning me, now left to lament in this separation?'

vinā tvāṁ vipulaśroṇi vṛthā me jīvitaṁ gṛham | rājyaṁ kamalapatrākṣi kiṁ karomi śucismite
'O broad-hipped one, without you my life and my home are in vain; O lotus-petal-eyed, radiant-smiling one, what use is my kingdom to me?'
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.30.4)
na prāṇā me bahiryānti viraheṇa tavādhunā | gato vai prītidharmastu tvāmṛte prāṇadhāraṇāt
'Even now, in this separation from you, my very life will not leave my body; the duty of love itself seems to have departed, and yet I go on sustaining this life without you.'
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.30.5)
vilapāmi viśālākṣi dehi pratyuttaraṁ priyam | kva gatā sā mayi prītiryābhūtprathamasaṅgame
'I lament, O large-eyed one — give me some loving answer! Where has that affection gone, which was there at our very first meeting?'
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.30.6)
nimagnā kiṁ jale subhrūrbhakṣitā matsyakacchapaiḥ | gṛhītā varuṇenāśu mama daurbhāgyayogataḥ
'O fair-browed one, have you drowned in the water? Were you devoured by fish or turtles? Or did Varuna swiftly seize you, through my own ill fortune?'
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.30.7)
dhanyā sucārusarvāṅgi yā tvaṁ putraiḥ samāgatā | akṛtrimastu putreṣu snehaste'mṛtabhāṣiṇi

na yuktamadhunā yanmāṁ vihāya tridivaṁ gatā | vilapantaṁ patiṁ dīnaṁ putrasnehena yantritā
'It is not right that you, bound by love for your sons, should have left me, your wretched, lamenting husband, and gone to heaven.'
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.30.9)
ubhayaṁ me gataṁ kānte putrāstvaṁ prāṇavallabhā | tathāpi maraṇaṁ nāsti duḥkhitasya bhṛśaṁ priye

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.30.10)
kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi rāmo nāsti mahītale | rāmāvirahajaṁ duḥkhaṁ jānāti raghunandanaḥ
'What shall I do, where shall I go? There is no one else on this earth — only Rama, son of Raghu, who himself knew such sorrow, understands grief born of separation from one's beloved.'
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.30.11)
vidhinā niṣṭhureṇātra viparītaṁ kṛtaṁ bhuvi | dampatyormaraṇaṁ bhinnaṁ sarvathā samacittayoḥ
'Cruel Fate has done this perverse thing here on earth — that the death of a husband and wife, of one mind in everything, should come to each separately.'

upakārastu nārīṇāṁ munibhirvihitaḥ kila | yaduktaṁ dharmaśāstreṣu jvalanaṁ patinā saha
'The sages indeed ordained a kindness for women in this — what the dharma-shastras enjoin, to enter the fire together with one's husband.'
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.30.13)

As the king lamented thus, Bhagavan Hari then restrained him with words full of reason —

Sri Bhagavan said: 'Why do you grieve, O king? Why do you ask where your beloved has gone? Have you not heard the scriptures, have you not taken refuge in the wisdom of the learned?'

kā sā kastvaṁ kva saṁyogo viyogaḥ kīdṛśastava | pravāharūpe saṁsāre nṛṇāṁ nautaratāmiva
'Who was she, who are you, what was this union, and what is this separation of yours — in this world that flows like a current, where men are like passengers on a boat?'
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.30.16)
gṛhe gaccha nṛpaśreṣṭha vṛthā te ruditena kim | saṁyogaśca viyogaśca daivādhīnaḥ sadā nṛṇām

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.30.17)

bhogaḥ kālavaśādeti tathaiva pratiyāti ca | nātra śokastu kartavyo niṣphale bhavavartmani
'Enjoyment comes under the sway of Time, and departs in that same way; grief should not be held onto along this fruitless path of worldly life.'
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.30.23)
naikatra sukhasaṁyogo duḥkhayogastu naikataḥ | ghaṭikāyantravatkāmaṁ bhramaṇaṁ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.30.25)
durlabho mānuṣo dehaḥ prāṇināṁ kṣaṇabhaṅguraḥ | tasminprāpte tu kartavyaṁ sarvathaivātmasādhanam
'A human body is hard to obtain for living beings, and it is fragile as a passing moment; having obtained it, one should devote oneself entirely to the accomplishment of the Self.'
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.30.26)

nāhaṁ nārada jānāmi pāraṁ paramadurghaṭam | guṇānāṁ kila māyāyā naiva śambhurna padmajaḥ
