Narada Consoles the King

Verse 1 (padma.2.107.1)

कुंजल उवाच । अथासौ नारदः स्वर्गादायुराजानमागतः । आगत्य कथयामास कस्माद्राजन्प्रशोचसे

kuṁjala uvāca athāsau nāradaḥ svargādāyurājānamāgataḥ āgatya kathayāmāsa kasmādrājanpraśocase

Kunjala said: Then Narada came down from heaven to King Ayu. Arriving, he said: 'O king, why do you grieve?'

Verse 2 (padma.2.107.2)

पुत्रापहरणं तेऽद्य क्षेमं जातं महामते । देवादीनां महाराज एवं ज्ञात्वा तु मा शुचः

putrāpaharaṇaṁ te'dya kṣemaṁ jātaṁ mahāmate devādīnāṁ mahārāja evaṁ jñātvā tu mā śucaḥ

'O wise one, this abduction of your son today has, in truth, been for the welfare of the gods and others, great king; knowing this, do not grieve.'

Verse 3 (padma.2.107.3)

सर्वज्ञः सगुणो भूत्वा सर्वविज्ञानसंयुतः । सर्वकलाभिसंपूर्ण आगमिष्यति ते सुतः

sarvajñaḥ saguṇo bhūtvā sarvavijñānasaṁyutaḥ sarvakalābhisaṁpūrṇa āgamiṣyati te sutaḥ

'All-knowing, virtuous, endowed with all forms of learning, accomplished in every art — your son shall return.'

Verse 4 (padma.2.107.4)

येनाप्यपहृतस्तेऽद्य बालो देवगुणोपमः । आत्मगेहे महाराज कालो नीतो न संशयः

yenāpyapahṛtaste'dya bālo devaguṇopamaḥ ātmagehe mahārāja kālo nīto na saṁśayaḥ

'Whoever has today abducted this child, endowed with the virtues of the gods, has, great king, without doubt, brought Death itself into his own house.'

Verse 5 (padma.2.107.5)

तस्याप्यंतं स वै कर्त्ता महावीर्यो महाबलः । स त्वामभ्येष्यते भूप शिवस्य सुतया सह

tasyāpyaṁtaṁ sa vai karttā mahāvīryo mahābalaḥ sa tvāmabhyeṣyate bhūpa śivasya sutayā saha

'That very son, of great valor and great strength, who shall bring about that one's end, shall come to you, O king, together with Shiva's daughter.'

Verse 6 (padma.2.107.6)

इंद्रोपेंद्रसमः पुत्रो भविष्यति स्वतेजसा । इंद्रत्वं भोक्ष्यते सोऽपि निजैश्च पुण्यकर्मभिः

iṁdropeṁdrasamaḥ putro bhaviṣyati svatejasā iṁdratvaṁ bhokṣyate so'pi nijaiśca puṇyakarmabhiḥ

'By his own splendor he shall become a son equal to Indra and Upendra; and by his own righteous deeds he shall enjoy even the office of Indra.'

Verse 7 (padma.2.107.7)

एवमाभाष्य राजानमायुं देवर्षिसत्तमः । जगाम सहसा तस्य पश्यतः सानुगस्य ह

evamābhāṣya rājānamāyuṁ devarṣisattamaḥ jagāma sahasā tasya paśyataḥ sānugasya ha

Having spoken thus to King Ayu, that foremost of divine sages, before the very eyes of the king and his attendants, departed at once.

Verse 8 (padma.2.107.8)

गते तस्मिन्महाभागे नारदे देवसंमिते । आयुरागत्य तां राज्ञीं तत्सर्वं विन्यवेदयत्

gate tasminmahābhāge nārade devasaṁmite āyurāgatya tāṁ rājñīṁ tatsarvaṁ vinyavedayat

When that blessed, godlike Narada had gone, Ayu came to the queen and related all of this to her.

Verse 9 (padma.2.107.9)

दत्तात्रेयेण यो दत्तः पुत्रो देववरोत्तमः । स वै राज्ञि कुशल्यास्ते विष्णोश्चैव प्रसादतः

dattātreyeṇa yo dattaḥ putro devavarottamaḥ sa vai rājñi kuśalyāste viṣṇoścaiva prasādataḥ

'That most excellent, godlike son given by Dattatreya, O queen, is, by Vishnu's very grace, safe and well.'

Verse 10 (padma.2.107.10)

येनाप्यसौ हृतः पुत्रः सगुणो मे वरानने । शिरस्तस्य गृहीत्वा तु पुनरेवागमिष्यति

yenāpyasau hṛtaḥ putraḥ saguṇo me varānane śirastasya gṛhītvā tu punarevāgamiṣyati

'O fair one, taking the very head of whoever has abducted my virtuous son, he shall return once more.'

Verse 11 (padma.2.107.11)

इत्याह नारदो भद्रे मा कृथाः शोकमेव च । त्यज चैनं महामोहं कार्यधर्मविनाशनम्

ityāha nārado bhadre mā kṛthāḥ śokameva ca tyaja cainaṁ mahāmohaṁ kāryadharmavināśanam

'Auspicious one, thus spoke Narada — do not grieve; abandon this great delusion, which destroys both duty and dharma.'

Verse 12 (padma.2.107.12)

भर्तुर्वाक्यं निशम्यैवं राज्ञी इंदुमती ततः । हर्षेणापि समाविष्टा पुत्रस्यागमनं प्रति

bharturvākyaṁ niśamyaivaṁ rājñī iṁdumatī tataḥ harṣeṇāpi samāviṣṭā putrasyāgamanaṁ prati

Hearing her husband's word, Queen Indumati was filled with joy at the thought of her son's return.

Verse 13 (padma.2.107.13)

यथोक्तं देवऋषिणा तत्तथैव भविष्यति । दत्तात्रेयेण मे दत्तस्तनपो ह्यजरामरः

yathoktaṁ devaṛṣiṇā tattathaiva bhaviṣyati dattātreyeṇa me dattastanapo hyajarāmaraḥ

'As the divine sage has said, so shall it be. That son given to me by Dattatreya is unaging and undying,'

Verse 14 (padma.2.107.14)

भविष्यति न संदेहः प्रतिभात्येनमेव हि । इत्येवं चिंतयित्वा तु ननाम द्विजपुंगवम्

bhaviṣyati na saṁdehaḥ pratibhātyenameva hi ityevaṁ ciṁtayitvā tu nanāma dvijapuṁgavam

'— of this there is no doubt; this alone appears true to me.' Having thought thus, she bowed down to that foremost of the twice-born —

Verse 15 (padma.2.107.15)

नमोस्तु तस्मै परिसिद्धिदाय अत्रेः सुपुत्राय महात्मने च । यस्य प्रसादेन मया सुपुत्रः प्राप्तः सुधीरः सुगुणः सुपुण्यः

namostu tasmai parisiddhidāya atreḥ suputrāya mahātmane ca yasya prasādena mayā suputraḥ prāptaḥ sudhīraḥ suguṇaḥ supuṇyaḥ

'Salutations to that great soul, Atri's excellent son, giver of every accomplishment — by whose grace I have obtained a fine son, of good understanding, of good virtue, and most holy.'

Verse 16 (padma.2.107.16)

एवमुक्त्वा तु सा देवी विरराम सुदुःखिता । आगमिष्यंतमाज्ञाय नहुषं तनयं पुनः

evamuktvā tu sā devī virarāma suduḥkhitā āgamiṣyaṁtamājñāya nahuṣaṁ tanayaṁ punaḥ

Having spoken thus, that most sorrowful goddess-like queen fell silent, knowing for certain that her son Nahusha would come back to her once again.
