Kunjala said: Having prostrated before Vasishtha, foremost of ascetics, and pleased him, and having taken his leave, he (Nahusha), bow and arrow in hand, set out.
Verse 2 (padma.2.109.2)
eṇasya māṁsaṁ suvipācyabhojitaṁ bālastayā rakṣita eva buddhyā āyoḥ suputraḥ saguṇaḥ surūpo devopamo devaguṇaiśca yuktaḥ
(Recalling the earlier events) — that maidservant, having well cooked the flesh of a deer, had with her wisdom thus saved the child — Ayu's son, virtuous, of fine form, godlike, endowed with the very qualities of the gods.
Verse 3 (padma.2.109.3)
tenaiva māṁsena susaṁskṛtena mṛṣṭena pakvena rasānugena tameva daityaṁ paribhāṣya sūdo duṣṭaṁ suharṣeṇa vyabhojayattadā
With that very same well-prepared, savory, well-cooked meat, having placated that demon, the cook fed him with great satisfaction.
Verse 4 (padma.2.109.4)
bubhuje dānavo māṁsaṁ rasasvādusamanvitam harṣeṇāpi samāviṣṭo jagāmāśokasuṁdarīm
The demon ate that savory meat, and, filled with great delight, went to Ashokasundari.
Verse 5 (padma.2.109.5)

tāmuvāca tatastūrṇaṁ kāmopahatacetanaḥ āyuputro mayā bhadre bhakṣitaḥ patireva te
His mind afflicted with desire, he at once said to her: 'Auspicious one, I have eaten Ayu's son — that very husband of yours.'
Verse 6 (padma.2.109.6)
māmeva bhaja cārvaṁgi bhuṁkṣva bhogānmanonugān kiṁ kariṣyasi tena tvaṁ mānuṣeṇa gatāyuṣā
'Now, O lovely-limbed one, worship me alone, enjoy the pleasures your heart desires. What use have you now for that mortal, whose life has already come to its end?'
Verse 7 (padma.2.109.7)
pratyuvāca samākarṇya śivakanyā tapasvinī bhartā me daivatairdatto ajaro doṣavarjitaḥ
Hearing this, that ascetic daughter of Shiva replied: 'My husband was given by the very gods themselves — unaging, free of every fault.'
Verse 8 (padma.2.109.8)
tasya mṛtyurna vai dṛṣṭo devairapi mahātmabhiḥ evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ dānavo duṣṭaceṣṭitaḥ
'His death has never been foreseen even by the great gods themselves.' Hearing this word, that demon of wicked ways —
Verse 9 (padma.2.109.9)
tāmuvāca viśālākṣīṁ prahasyaiva punaḥ punaḥ adyaiva bhakṣitaṁ māṁsamāyuputrasya suṁdari
— spoke to that wide-eyed one, laughing again and again: 'This very day, beautiful one, I have eaten the flesh —'
Verse 10 (padma.2.109.10)
jātamātrasya bālasya nahuṣasya durātmanaḥ evamākarṇya sā vākyaṁ kopaṁ cakre sudāruṇam
'— of that just-born, vile-souled child Nahusha.' Hearing this, that goddess-like woman was seized with a most terrible wrath,
Verse 11 (padma.2.109.11)

provāca satyasaṁsthā sā tapasā bhāvitā punaḥ tapa eva mayā taptaṁ manasā niyamena vai āyusutaścirāyuśca satyenaiva bhaviṣyati

Verse 12 (padma.2.109.12)

evamākarṇitaṁ tasyāḥ sūdena nṛpatiṁ prati parityajya mahārāja etāmanyāṁ samāśraya
Hearing this, through the cook it was made known to the king (Hunda): 'Great king, leave this one aside and take refuge with some other.'
Verse 14 (padma.2.109.14)
sūdena preṣito daityaḥ sa huṁḍaḥ pāpacetanaḥ nirjagāma tvarāyuktaḥ sa svāṁ bhāryāṁ priyāṁ prati
Sent thither by the cook, that sinful-minded demon Hunda hastened swiftly to his own beloved wife.
Verse 15 (padma.2.109.15)
ceṣṭitaṁ naiva jānāti dāsyā sūdena yatkṛtam tasyai niveditaṁ sarvaṁ priyāyai vṛttameva ca
