evaṁ saṁbhāṣya taṁ putramāliṁgya tanayottamam śiraścāghrāya tasyāpi vatsaṁ dhenuryathā svakam
Thus conversing with that finest of sons, embracing him, nuzzling his head — as a cow nuzzles her own calf,
Verse 16 (padma.2.117.16)
abhinaṁdya sutaṁ prāptaṁ nahuṣaṁ devarūpiṇam āśīrbhiścārcayaddevī puṇyā iṁdumatī tadā

Suta said: Then that son related to his holy mother, the goddess Indumati, the whole account of his own abduction —
Verse 18 (padma.2.117.18)
svabhāryāyāstathotpattiṁ prāptiṁ caiva mahāyaśāḥ huṁḍenāpi yathā yuddhaṁ huṁḍasyāpi nipātanam
— and, that man of great renown, the account of his wife's origin and their union too; and the battle that took place with Hunda, and Hunda's very fall.
Verse 19 (padma.2.117.19)
samāsena samastaṁ tadākhyātaṁ svayameva hi mātāpitroryathā vṛttaṁ tayorānaṁdadāyakam
He himself related all of this in brief, an account that brought the greatest joy to his mother and father.
Verse 20 (padma.2.117.20)
mātāpitarāvākarṇya putrasya vikramodyamam harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭau saṁjātau pūrṇamānasau
Hearing of their son's valor and his great endeavor, both mother and father, filled with the greatest joy, found their hearts made whole.
Verse 21 (padma.2.117.21)
nahuṣo dhanurādāya iṁdrasya syaṁdanena vai jigāya pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ saptadvīpāṁ sapattanām
Nahusha, taking up his bow, upon that very chariot of Indra, conquered the whole earth, with its seven continents and its cities.
Verse 22 (padma.2.117.22)
pitre samarpayāmāsa vasupūrṇāṁ vasuṁdharām pitaraṁ harṣayannityaṁ dānadharmaiḥ sukarmabhiḥ
That earth, filled with wealth and grain, he offered to his father, and, through charity, righteous deeds and good works, he ever kept his father content.
Verse 23 (padma.2.117.23)
pitaraṁ yājayāmāsa rājasūyādibhistadā mahāyajñaiśca dānaiśca vratairniyamasaṁyamaiḥ
He then had his father perform sacrifices such as the Rajasuya — with great sacrifices, gifts, vows, disciplines and restraints.
Verse 24 (padma.2.117.24)
sudānairyaśasā puṇyairyajñaiḥ puṇyamahodayaiḥ susaṁpūrṇau kṛtau tau tu pitarau cāyusūnunā
Through fine gifts, fame, merit and great and holy sacrifices, Ayu's son made his mother and father wholly complete in every way.
Verse 25 (padma.2.117.25)
atha devāḥ samāgatya nāgāhvayaṁ purottamam abhyaṣiṁcanmahātmānaṁ nahuṣaṁ vīramardanam
Then the gods themselves came to that finest of cities, Nagahvaya, and anointed that great soul, Nahusha, the subduer of the mightiest heroes.
Verse 26 (padma.2.117.26)
munibhiśca susiddhaiśca āyunā tena bhūbhujā abhiṣiṁcya svarājye taṁ sametaṁ śivakanyayā
Together with the sages and siddhas, that lord of the earth Ayu too anointed him upon his own throne, present there with Shiva's daughter.
Verse 27 (padma.2.117.27)
bhāryāyuktaḥ svakāyena āyu rājā mahāyaśāḥ divaṁ jagāma dharmātmā devaiḥ siddhaiḥ supūjitaḥ
Then that righteous king Ayu, of great renown, together with his own body and with his wife, well honored by gods and siddhas, ascended to heaven.
Verse 28 (padma.2.117.28)
aiṁdraṁ padaṁ parityajya brahmalokaṁ gataḥ punaḥ haralokaṁ jagāmātha munibhirdevapūjitaḥ
Leaving behind even the office of Indra, he went on further to Brahmaloka; and then, honored by sages and gods, he went to the world of Shiva.
Verse 29 (padma.2.117.29)
svakarmabhirmahārājaḥ putrasyāpi sutejasā harerlokaṁ gataḥ puṇyairnivasatyeṣa bhūpatiḥ
By his own deeds, and by his son's great splendor too, that great king, through the strength of his merit, attained the world of Hari (Vishnu), and dwells there still.
Verse 30 (padma.2.117.30)
puruṣaiḥ puṇyakarmākhyairīdṛśaṁ puṇyamuttamam janitavyaṁ mahābhāga kimanyaiḥ śokakārakaiḥ
For men who perform righteous deeds, such excellent merit alone should be the fruit, most blessed one — what use are other deeds, ones that only bring forth grief?
Verse 31 (padma.2.117.31)
yathā jātaḥ sa dharmātmā nahuṣaḥ pitṛtārakaḥ kulasya dharttā sarvasya nahuṣo jñānapaṁḍitaḥ
Just as that righteous Nahusha, deliverer of his ancestors, came into being — that same Nahusha, skilled in knowledge, became the sustainer of his entire lineage.
Verse 32 (padma.2.117.32)
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ caritraṁ tasya bhūpateḥ anyatkiṁ te pravakṣyāmi vada putra kapiṁjala
This whole account of that king's life have I now related to you. My son Kapinjala, what more shall I tell you — speak.
Verse 33 (padma.2.117.33)
evaṁvidhaṁ puṇyamayaṁ pavitraṁ caritrametadyaśasā sametam āyoḥ sutasyāpi śṛṇoti martyo bhogānsa bhuktvaiti padaṁ murāreḥ
Whatever mortal hears this holy, meritorious and glorious account of Ayu's son, he, having enjoyed every pleasure, attains in the end the supreme abode of Murari, the slayer of Mura.
