Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 121
The Slaying of Vihunda
Verse 1 (padma.2.121.1)
Kamoda said: He whose true form and its very extent none of the gods know — he in whom all of this dissolves — he alone is called the one Self.
Verse 2 (padma.2.121.2)
yasyā māyāprapaṁcastu saṁsāraḥ śṛṇu nārada kasmātprayāti saṁsāraṁ mama svāmī jagatpatiḥ
Whose expanding illusion this world of transmigration is — listen, Narada. Why should my Lord, Master of the universe, undergo this very transmigration?
Verse 3 (padma.2.121.3)
pāpaiścāpi supuṇyaiśca narobaddhastu karmabhiḥ saṁsāraṁ sarate vipra hariḥ kasmādvrajedvada
It is man, bound by deeds both sinful and virtuous, who wanders through samsara, brahmin — why should Hari go there? Tell me.
Verse 4 (padma.2.121.4)
nārada uvāca śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi yatkṛtaṁ tena cakriṇā bhṛgoragre pratijñātaṁ yajñarakṣāṁ karomyaham
Narada said: Listen, goddess, I shall tell you what was done by that wielder of the discus. Before Bhrigu he had made this vow: 'I shall protect this sacrifice.'
Verse 5 (padma.2.121.5)
iṁdrasya vacanātsadyo gato'sau dānavaiḥ saha yoddhuṁ vihāya goviṁdo bhṛgoścaiva makhottamam
At Indra's word, Govinda went at once, abandoning Bhrigu's excellent sacrifice, to fight together against the demons.
Verse 6 (padma.2.121.6)
makhaṁ tyaktvā gate deve paścāttairdānavottamaiḥ āgatya dhvaṁsitaḥ sarvaḥ sa yajñaḥ pāpacetanaiḥ
When the god had abandoned the sacrifice and departed, those foremost demons afterward came there and, sinful-minded, destroyed that entire sacrifice.
Verse 7 (padma.2.121.7)
hariṁ kruddhaḥ sa yogīṁdraḥ śaśāpa bhṛgureva tam daśajanmāni bhuṁkṣva tvaṁ macchāpakaluṣīkṛtaḥ
Enraged, that lord of yogis, Bhrigu, himself cursed Hari: 'Defiled by my curse, undergo ten births.'
Verse 8 (padma.2.121.8)
karmaṇaḥ svasya saṁbhogaṁ saṁbhokṣyati janārdanaḥ tannimittaṁ tvayā devi duḥsvapnaḥ parivīkṣitaḥ
'Janardana shall undergo the very fruit of his own deed.' For that very reason, goddess, did you behold that ill-omened dream.
Verse 9 (padma.2.121.9)
ityuktvā tāṁ gato vipro brahmalokaṁ sa nāradaḥ kṛṣṇasyāpi suduḥkhena duḥkhitā sābhavattadā
Having spoken thus, that brahmin Narada went to Brahmaloka. That young woman then became sorrowful, grieving for Krishna's own sorrow.
Verse 10 (padma.2.121.10)
ruroda karuṇaṁ bālā hāheti vadatī muhuḥ gaṅgātīropaviṣṭā sā jalāṁte śṛṇu nandana
She wept piteously, crying 'Alas, alas!' again and again. My child, hear this — seated on the bank of the Ganga, near the water, she —
Verse 11 (padma.2.121.11)
sunetrābhyāṁ tathāśrūṇi duḥkhenāpi pramuṁcati tānyaśrūṇi pramuktāni gaṁgātoye pataṁtyapi
— began to shed tears from her lovely eyes, out of that grief. Those tears, once shed, fell into the waters of the Ganga,
Verse 12 (padma.2.121.12)
jale caiva nimajjaṁti tasyāścāpyaśrubiṁdavaḥ saṁbhavaṁti punastāta padmarūpāṇi tāni ca
and those very drops of her tears would sink into the water. Then, my child, they would turn into the very form of lotuses,
Verse 13 (padma.2.121.13)
gaṁgātoye praphullāni vāhitāni prayāṁti vai dadṛśe dānavaśreṣṭho viṣṇumāyāpramohitaḥ
blossoming in the Ganga's waters and floating along with its current. That foremost of demons, deluded by Vishnu's own illusion, beheld them.
Verse 14 (padma.2.121.14)
duḥkhajāni na jānāti muninā kathitānyapi harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ parijagrāha so'suraḥ
He did not know they were born of sorrow, even though the sage had already told him of them. Filled with the greatest joy, that demon gathered them up.
Verse 15 (padma.2.121.15)
padmaistu puṣpitaiḥ sopi pūjayedgirijāpriyam saptakoṭibhirdaityeṁdro viṣṇumāyāpramohitaḥ
With those blossomed lotuses he began to worship Girija's beloved (Shiva) — that lord of demons, deluded by Vishnu's illusion, with a full seven crores of flowers.
Verse 16 (padma.2.121.16)
atha kruddhā jagaddhātrī śaṁkaraṁ vākyamabravīt paśyaitasya vikarma tvaṁ dānavasya mahāmate
Then, enraged, the World-Mother spoke this word to Shankara: 'Behold this demon's very misdeed, O great-minded one.'
Verse 17 (padma.2.121.17)
śokotpannāni padmāni gaṁgātoyagatāni vai ayameṣa pragṛhṇāti kāmākulitacetanaḥ
'These lotuses, born of sorrow, flowing in the waters of the Ganga — this very one gathers them up, his mind consumed with desire.'
Verse 18 (padma.2.121.18)
pūjayeccāpi duṣṭātmā śokasaṁtāpakārakaiḥ duḥkhajaiḥ śokajaiḥ puṣpaistaiḥ suśreyaḥ kathaṁ bhavet
'And that wicked-souled one worships with just these flowers, born of grief, born of sorrow, that bring only torment — how could any true good come of that?'
Verse 19 (padma.2.121.19)
yādṛśenāpi bhāvena māmeva paripūjayet tādṛśenāpi bhāvena asya siddhirbhaviṣyati
'With whatever spirit a man truly worships me, in that very spirit shall his accomplishment come to be.'
Verse 20 (padma.2.121.20)
satyadhyānavihīnoyaṁ kāmodā nyastamānasaḥ saṁjātaḥ pāpacāritro jahi devi svatejasā
'This one, devoid of true meditation, O Kamoda, his mind fixed elsewhere, has become a man of sinful conduct — slay him, goddess, with your own splendor.'
Verse 21 (padma.2.121.21)
evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ śaṁbhoścaiva mahātmanaḥ asyaiva saṁkṣayaṁ śaṁbho kariṣye tava śāsanāt
Hearing this word of the great-souled Shambhu, (the goddess said): 'By your very command, Shambhu, I shall bring about his utter destruction.'
Verse 22 (padma.2.121.22)
evamuktvā tato devī tasyāpi vadhakāṁkṣayā varttate hi vihuṁḍasya vadhopāyaṁ vyaciṁtayat
Having said this, that goddess, longing for his death, began to ponder upon the means of Vihunda's slaying.
Verse 23 (padma.2.121.23)
kṛtvā māyāmayaṁ rūpaṁ brāhmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ pūjayecchaṁkaraṁ nāthaṁ supuṣpaiḥ pārijātajaiḥ
Assuming the illusory form of a great-souled brahmin — one who would worship Lord Shankara with the fine flowers of the Parijata tree,
Verse 24 (padma.2.121.24)
sametya dānavaḥ pāpo divyāṁ pūjāṁ vināśayet kāmākulaḥ suduḥkhārtastadgato bhāvatatparaḥ
— (she resolved that) this sinful demon, coming there, would destroy that divine worship. Consumed with desire, afflicted with sorrow, intent upon that very purpose, he went there,
Verse 25 (padma.2.121.25)
viṣṇoścaiva mahāmāyāṁ pūrvadṛṣṭāṁ sa dānavaḥ sasmāra dānavaḥ pāpaḥ kāmabāṇaiḥ prapīḍitaḥ
and that demon remembered the great illusion of Vishnu that he had seen before — that sinful demon, tormented by the arrows of desire.
Verse 26 (padma.2.121.26)
tasyāḥ smaraṇamātreṇa kaṁdarpeṇa balīyasā virahākuladuḥkhārto rodate hi muhurmuhuḥ
By the mere memory of her, overpowered by the mighty god of love, tormented by the sorrow of separation, he began to weep again and again.
Verse 27 (padma.2.121.27)
kālākṛṣṭaḥ sa duṣṭātmā śokajātāni tāni saḥ parigṛhya samāyātaḥ pūjanārthī maheśvaram
Drawn on by fate, that wicked-souled one, gathering up those flowers born of sorrow, came there, desiring to worship the great Lord.
Verse 28 (padma.2.121.28)
devyā kṛtāṁ hi pūjāṁ ca supuṣpaiḥ pārijātajaiḥ tāṁ nirṇāśya sulobhena śokajaiḥ paripūjayet
Destroying that worship which the goddess had performed with the fine flowers of the Parijata, out of his own greed he began to worship instead with those sorrow-born flowers.
Verse 29 (padma.2.121.29)
netrābhyāṁ tasya duṣṭasya biṁdavaste'śrusaṁbhavāḥ aviralāstato vatsa pataṁti liṁgamastake
From that wicked one's own eyes too, drops born of tears — my child — began to fall unceasingly upon the very head of the linga.
Verse 30 (padma.2.121.30)
devī brāhmaṇarūpeṇa tamuvāca mahāmate ko bhavānpūjayeddevaṁ śokākulamanāḥ sadā
The goddess, in the form of a brahmin, said to him: 'Great-minded one, who are you, that would worship the god with a mind ever consumed by grief?'
Verse 31 (padma.2.121.31)
pataṁtyaśrūṇi devasya mastake śokajāni te apavitrāṇi me brūhi etamarthaṁ mamāgrataḥ
'Tears born of sorrow, impure, fall upon the very head of the god — tell me the reason for all of this, here before me.'
Verse 32 (padma.2.121.32)
vihuṁḍa uvāca pūrvaṁ dṛṣṭā mayā nārī sarvasaubhāgyasaṁpadā sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannā kāmasyāyatanaṁ mahat
Vihunda said: 'Before, I saw a woman, possessed of every fortune, endowed with every auspicious mark, a great abode of desire itself.'
Verse 33 (padma.2.121.33)
tasyā mohena saṁdagdhaḥ kāmenākulatāṁ gataḥ tayā proktaṁ hi saṁbhoge dehi me dāyamuttamam
'Consumed with the delusion of her, I fell into the grip of desire. It was she who told me: for union with me, give me my finest due —'
Verse 34 (padma.2.121.34)
kāmodasaṁbhavaiḥ puṣpaiḥ pūjayasva maheśvaram teṣāṁ puṣpakṛtāṁ mālāṁ mama kaṁṭhe parikṣipa
'— worship the great Lord with flowers born of Kamoda. Take a garland fashioned of those very flowers and place it about my neck.'
Verse 35 (padma.2.121.35)
koṭibhiḥ saptasaṁkhyātaiḥ pūjayasva maheśvaram tadarthaṁ pūjayāmyeva īśvaraṁ phaladāyakam
'Worship the great Lord with a full seven crores of them.' It is for this very purpose that I worship this Ishvara, giver of my fruit —
Verse 36 (padma.2.121.36)
kāmodasaṁbhavaiḥ puṣpairdurlabhairdevadānavaiḥ śrīdevyuvāca kva te bhāvaḥ kva te dhyānaṁ kva te jñānaṁ durātmanaḥ
— with flowers born of Kamoda, hard to obtain even for gods and demons.' Shri Devi said: 'Wicked one, where is your true devotion, where your meditation, where your understanding?'
Verse 37 (padma.2.121.37)
īśvarasyāpi saṁbaṁdho nāsti kiṁcittvayaiva hi kāmodāyā varaṁ rūpaṁ kīdṛśaṁ vada sāṁpratam
'You have not the slightest true connection with the Lord at all. Now tell me — what manner of fine form does this Kamoda have?'
Verse 38 (padma.2.121.38)
kva labdhāni supuṣpāṇi tasyā hāsyodbhavāni ca vihuṁḍa uvāca bhāvaṁ dhyānaṁ na jānāmi na dṛṣṭā sā mayā kadā
'Where did you obtain these fine flowers, born of her very laughter?' Vihunda said: 'I know nothing of true devotion or meditation; nor have I ever even seen her.'
Verse 39 (padma.2.121.39)
gaṁgātoyagatānyeva parigṛhṇāmi nityaśaḥ tairahaṁ pūjayāmyekaṁ śaṁkaraṁ pravadāmyaham
'I only gather those that come floating in the waters of the Ganga, always. With those alone I worship Shankara, this alone is what I tell you.'
Verse 40 (padma.2.121.40)
mamāgre kathitaṁ vipra śukreṇāpi mahātmanā vacanāttasya deveśamarcayāmi dinadine
'This, brahmin, was told to me before by the great-souled Shukra himself. At his very word I worship the God of gods, day after day.'
Verse 41 (padma.2.121.41)
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yacca pṛṣṭosmi sāṁpratam śrīdevyuvāca kāmodārodanājjātaiḥ puṣpaistairduḥkhasaṁbhavaiḥ
'This is all that I have told you, whatever you have now asked me.' Shri Devi said: 'With those very flowers, born of Kamoda's weeping, born of sorrow —'
Verse 42 (padma.2.121.42)
liṁgamarcayase duṣṭa prabhāte nityameva ca yādṛśenāpi bhāvena puṣpaiśca yādṛśaistvayā
'— you, wicked one, worship the linga each and every dawn. With whatever spirit, and with whatever flowers, by you —'
Verse 43 (padma.2.121.43)
arcito devadeveśastādṛśaṁ phalamāpnuhi divyapūjāṁ vināśyaivaṁ śokapuṣpaiḥ prapūjasi
'— the God of gods has been worshipped, just such a fruit shall you now obtain. Destroying my divine worship, you have worshipped instead with the flowers of sorrow.'
Verse 44 (padma.2.121.44)
asau doṣastavaivādya samutpannaḥ sudāruṇaḥ tasmāddaṇḍaṁ pradāsyāmi bhuṁkṣva svakarmajaṁ phalam
'This most terrible fault has today arisen through you alone. Therefore I shall mete out punishment upon you — enjoy the fruit born of your own deed.'
Verse 45 (padma.2.121.45)
tasyā vākyaṁ samākarṇya kālakṛṣṭo babhāṣa tām re re duṣṭa durācāra mama karmapradūṣaka
Hearing her word, that one, drawn on by fate, said to her: 'You there — wicked one, of evil conduct, defiler of my rightful deed!'
Verse 46 (padma.2.121.46)
'I shall slay you here with this very sword, without doubt.' Having said this to that brahmin, he raised his sharpened sword.
Verse 47 (padma.2.121.47)
haṁtukāmaḥ sa duṣṭātmā abhyadhāvata dānavaḥ sā devī viprarūpeṇa saṁkruddhā parameśvarī
That wicked-souled demon charged forward, intent on killing. That goddess, still in the form of a brahmin, grew greatly enraged, the Supreme Goddess herself —
Verse 48 (padma.2.121.48)
hanmi tvāmiha khaḍgena anenāpi na saṁśayaḥ svasthānamāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā huṁkāraṁ visasarja ha tena huṁkāranādena patito dānavādhamaḥ
— 'I shall slay you here with this very sword, without doubt' — seeing him rush upon her true form, she let forth a great roar of 'Hum!' By that very roar, that vilest of demons fell,
Verse 49 (padma.2.121.49)
niśceṣṭaḥ kāmarūpeṇa vajrāhata ivācalaḥ patite dānave tasminsarvalokavināśake
motionless, still in that very form consumed by desire, like a mountain struck down by a thunderbolt. With that demon fallen, that destroyer of all the worlds —
Verse 50 (padma.2.121.50)
lokāḥ svāsthyaṁ gatāḥ sarve duḥkhatāpavivarjitāḥ etasmātkāraṇādvatsa sā strī vai paridevati
— all the worlds regained their peace, freed from every sorrow and torment. My child, it is for this very reason that woman laments —
Verse 51 (padma.2.121.51)
gaṁgātīre varārohā duḥkhavyākulamānasā etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yattvayā paripṛcchitam
— on the bank of the Ganga, that fine woman, her mind distraught with grief. This is all that I have related to you, whatever you had asked me.
Verse 52 (padma.2.121.52)
viṣṇuruvāca evamuktvā suputraṁ taṁ kuṁjalo aṁḍajeśvaraḥ virarāma mahāprājñaḥ kiñcinnovāca bhūpate
Vishnu said: Having thus spoken to his fine son, Kunjala, that lord among birds, that greatly wise one, fell silent, and, O king (Vena), said nothing more.
