Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 125
The Fruits of Hearing the Bhumikhanda
Verse 1 (padma.2.125.1)
sūta uvāca venasyājñāṁ susaṁprāpya pṛthuḥ paramadhārmikaḥ saṁbabhre sarvasaṁbhārānnānāpuṇyānnṛpātmajaḥ
Suta said: Having duly received Vena's command, Prithu, most righteous, that son of the king, gathered together every manner of holy sacrificial material.
Verse 2 (padma.2.125.2)
nimaṁtrya brāhmaṇānsarvānnānādeśodbhavānapi atha vena iyājāsāvaśvamedhena bhūpatiḥ
Having invited all the brahmins, come from many different lands, that lord of the earth, Vena, then performed sacrifice by the Ashvamedha.
Verse 3 (padma.2.125.3)
dānānyadādbrāhmaṇebhyo nānārūpāṇyanekaśaḥ jagāma vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ sakāyo jagatīpatiḥ
He gave gifts to the brahmins of many kinds, in various forms; and that lord of the world, with his own body, went to the world of Vishnu.
Verse 4 (padma.2.125.4)
viṣṇunā saha dharmātmā nityameva pravartate etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ caritraṁ tasya bhūpateḥ
That righteous one dwells forever, eternally, together with Vishnu. This whole account of that king's life have I related to you —
Verse 5 (padma.2.125.5)
sarvapāpapraśamanaṁ sarvaduḥkhavināśanam pṛthureva sa dharmātmā rājā pṛthvīṁ praśāsati
— a calmer of every sin, a destroyer of every sorrow. That very Prithu, righteous, became king and ruled over the earth.
Verse 6 (padma.2.125.6)
trailokyena samaṁ pṛthvīṁ dudoha nṛpasattamaḥ prajāstu raṁjitāstena puṇyadharmānukarmabhiḥ
That best of kings milked the earth as though she were the equal of the three worlds; and by deeds that followed holy dharma, he made his people rejoice.
Verse 7 (padma.2.125.7)
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ bhūmikhaṇḍamanuttamam prathamaṁ sṛṣṭikhaṁḍaṁ tu dvitīyaṁ bhūmikhaṁḍakam
This is all that I have told you — this most excellent Bhumikhanda. The first is the Srishti-khanda, and this, the second, is the Bhumi-khanda —
Verse 8 (padma.2.125.8)
bhūmikhaṁḍasyamāhātmyaṁ kathayiṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ asya khaṁḍasya vai ślokaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti narottamaḥ
now I shall speak once more of the greatness of the Bhumikhanda. Whatever excellent man hears even a single verse of this khanda —
Verse 9 (padma.2.125.9)
dinasyaikasya vai pāpaṁ tasya caiva praṇaśyati yo naro bhāvasaṁyukto'dhyāyaṁ saṁśṛṇute sudhīḥ
— even the sin of a single day is destroyed for him. And whatever wise man, filled with true devotion, hears an entire chapter —
Verse 10 (padma.2.125.10)
tasya puṇyaṁ pravakṣyāmi śrūyatāṁ dvijasattamāḥ dattasya gosahasrasya brāhmaṇebhyaḥ suparvaṇi
his merit I shall now tell — hear it, foremost brahmins. Whatever fruit is obtained from the gift of a thousand cows to brahmins on a holy occasion —
Verse 11 (padma.2.125.11)
yatphalaṁ tatprajāyeta viṣṇustasya prasīdati asya padmapurāṇasya paṭhamānasya nityaśaḥ
— that very fruit is his as well, and Vishnu becomes pleased with him. For whoever recites this Padma Purana always, day after day —
Verse 12 (padma.2.125.12)
kalauyuge tu vighnāśca na jāyaṁte narasya vai vyāsa uvāca kasmātkalau na jāyaṁte śṛṇvānasya ca padmaja
— in the Kali age, no obstacle arises for that man. Vyasa said: O son of the lotus (Brahma), why do no obstacles arise in Kali for one who merely listens —
Verse 13 (padma.2.125.13)
narasya puṇyayuktasya nānā vighnāḥ sudāruṇāḥ brahmovāca makhasyāpyaśvamedhasya yatphalaṁ parikathyate
— while for even a man of great merit, various terrible obstacles do come to arise? Brahma said: The fruit that is spoken of concerning the Ashvamedha sacrifice —
Verse 14 (padma.2.125.14)
tatphalaṁ dṛśyate tāta purāṇe padmasaṁjñake aśvamedhamakhaḥ puṇyaḥ kalau naiva pravartate
— that very fruit, my child, is seen in this Purana named Padma. The holy Ashvamedha sacrifice does not take place at all in the Kali age —
Verse 15 (padma.2.125.15)
purāṇaṁ cāpi yattadvadaśvamedhasamaṁ kila aśvamedhasya yatpuṇyaṁ svargamokṣaphalapradam
— but this Purana too is said to be its very equal. The merit of the Ashvamedha, which grants the fruit of both heaven and liberation,
Verse 16 (padma.2.125.16)
na bhuṁjaṁti narāḥ pāpāḥ pāpamārgeṣu saṁsthitāḥ purāṇasyāsya puṇyasya padmasaṁjñasya sattama
— that fruit sinful men, fixed upon paths of sin, cannot enjoy. This merit, worthy one, of the holy Purana named Padma —
Verse 17 (padma.2.125.17)
aśvamedhasamaṁ puṇyaṁ na bhuṁjaṁti kalau narāḥ kalau yuge naraiḥ pāpairgaṁtavyaṁ narakārṇavam
— equal to the Ashvamedha itself — men in Kali cannot freely enjoy. In the age of Kali, sinful men must go to the very ocean of hell.
Verse 18 (padma.2.125.18)
kasmācchroṣyaṁti tatpuṇyaṁ caturvargaprasādhanam yena śrutamidaṁ puṇyaṁ purāṇaṁ padmasaṁjñakam
Why should they hear that merit, which accomplishes the fourfold goal of life? By whomever this holy Purana, named Padma, is heard,
Verse 19 (padma.2.125.19)
sarvaṁ hi sādhitaṁ tena caturvargasya sādhanam aśvamedhādayo yajñāstasmānnaṣṭā mahāmate
— by him alone the whole accomplishment of the fourfold goal is achieved. It is for this reason, great-minded one, that sacrifices beginning with the Ashvamedha have vanished —
Verse 20 (padma.2.125.20)
kalau yuge gatāḥ svarge savedāḥ sāṁgasasvarāḥ yaḥ kopi satvasaṁpannaḥ śraddhāvānbhagavatparaḥ
— gone to heaven in the Kali age, together with the Vedas, their auxiliary sciences and their proper intonation. Whoever, endowed with goodness, full of faith, devoted wholly to the Lord —
Verse 21 (padma.2.125.21)
śrotumicchati dharmātmā saputro bhāryayā saha śravaṇārthaṁ mahāśraddhā pūrvaṁ tasya prajāyate
— that righteous man wishes to hear it, together with his sons and his wife — for him, first, a great faith for the hearing of it arises.
Verse 22 (padma.2.125.22)
śṛṇvānasya narasyāpi mahāvighno na saṁcaret aśraddhā jāyate pūrvaṁ pāṭhakasya narasya ca
For such a listening man, no great obstacle passes through his path. But in a faithless reciter and listener, faithlessness arises first —
Verse 23 (padma.2.125.23)
lobhaśca jāyate tasya śṛṇvānasya dvijottama preṣito viṣṇudevena mahāmohaḥ sa dāruṇaḥ
— O best of the twice-born, greed too arises in that listener. That terrible great delusion, sent forth by the god Vishnu himself —
Verse 24 (padma.2.125.24)
akarotsa vināśaṁ tu śṛṇvataścāsya nityaśaḥ dūṣakāḥ kutsakāḥ pāpāḥ saṁbhavaṁti dine dine
— continually brings about the ruin of that very listener. Detractors, scoffers, and sinners come into being day after day.
Verse 25 (padma.2.125.25)
jñātavyaṁ tu subuddhena vighnarūpaṁ mamādhunā saṁjātaṁ dṛśyate vyāsa tathā homaṁ samācaret
This should be understood by the wise: 'This, now, is the very form of an obstacle arisen upon me' — thus, Vyasa, should it be recognized, and then a homa should be performed —
Verse 26 (padma.2.125.26)
vaiṣṇavaiśca mahāmaṁtrairviṣṇusūktaiḥ supuṇyadaiḥ viṣṇorarāṭamaṁtreṇa sahasraśīrṣakeṇa ca
— with the great Vaishnava mantras, with holy, merit-bestowing Vishnu-hymns, with Vishnu's own Arāṭa-mantra, and with the Sahasrashirsha hymn —
Verse 27 (padma.2.125.27)
idaṁ viṣṇu sumaṁtreṇa ābrahmeṇa punaḥ punaḥ tryaṁbakena ca maṁtreṇa homamevaṁ samācaret
— with this excellent Vishnu-mantra, and again and again with the 'A-Brahma' mantra, and with the Tryambaka mantra too — thus should the homa be performed,
Verse 28 (padma.2.125.28)
bṛhatsāmnā sumaṁtreṇa dvādaśākṣarakeṇa ca yasya devasya yo homastasya maṁtreṇa homayet
— with the excellent Brihat-sama hymn, and with the twelve-syllabled mantra too. For whichever deity the homa is to be offered, it should be offered with that very deity's own mantra.
Verse 29 (padma.2.125.29)
aṣṭottaratilājyaiśca pālāśaiḥ samidhairapi grahāṇāmapi karttavyaṁ sthāpanaṁ pūjanaṁ dvija
With sesame and ghee, one hundred and eight times, and with palasha twigs as fuel too — the installation and worship of the planets should also be performed, brahmin.
Verse 30 (padma.2.125.30)
vighneśaṁ pūjayettatra śāradāṁ ca sureśvarīm jātavedāṁ mahāmāyāṁ caṁḍikāṁ kṣetranāyakam
There Vighnesha (Ganesha) should be worshipped, and Sharada, sovereign of the gods, and the fire-god Jatavedas, and the great Mahamaya Chandika, and the guardian deity of the sacred site too —
Verse 31 (padma.2.125.31)
tilaiśca taṁdulairājyaisteṣāṁ maṁtrasamudyataiḥ evaṁ homaḥ prakarttavyo brāhmaṇebhyo dadeddhanam
— with sesame, rice-grains and ghee, offered up together with their own proper mantras. Thus should the homa be performed, and wealth should be given to the brahmins,
Verse 32 (padma.2.125.32)
yathāsaṁbhāvikāṁ tāta dakṣiṇāṁ dhenusaṁyutām tato vighnāḥ praṇaśyaṁti purāṇaṁ siddhimāpnuyāt
my child, together with a fitting fee, and a cow, as far as one is able. Then the obstacles are destroyed, and the Purana attains its full accomplishment.
Verse 33 (padma.2.125.33)
evaṁ na kurute yo hi tasya vighnaṁ vadāmyaham tasyāṁge jāyate rogo bahupīḍāpradāyakaḥ
Whoever does not do this, his obstacle I shall now tell: in his body arises disease, bringing much affliction.
Verse 34 (padma.2.125.34)
bhāryā śokaḥ putraśoko dhanahāniḥ prajāyate nānāvidhānmahārogānbhuṁjate nātra saṁśayaḥ
Grief for his wife, grief for his son, and loss of wealth come upon him. He suffers various great diseases, of this there is no doubt.
Verse 35 (padma.2.125.35)
yasya gehe nāsti vittamupavāsaṁ samācaret ekādaśīṁ susaṁprāpya pūjayenmadhusūdanam
Whoever has no wealth in his house should observe a fast; having duly reached the eleventh lunar day, he should worship Madhusudana,
Verse 36 (padma.2.125.36)
ṣoḍaśaiścopacāraiśca bhāvayuktena cetasā brāhmaṇānbhojayetpaścādyathāvittānusārataḥ
— with the sixteen forms of ritual attendance, with a heart full of true devotion; and after that, according to his means, he should feed the brahmins,
Verse 37 (padma.2.125.37)
keśavāya tato datvā saṁkalpaṁ haviṣānvitam svayaṁ kuryāttataḥ prājño bhojanaṁ saha bāṁdhavaiḥ
and then, having offered his resolve to Keshava together with the oblation, that wise man should himself then eat, together with his kinsmen.
Verse 38 (padma.2.125.38)
putraistu bhāryayā yuktastataḥ siddhimavāpnuyāt purāṇasaṁhitāpūrṇā śrotavyā dharmatatparaiḥ
Together with his sons and his wife, he then obtains the full accomplishment. This complete collection of the Purana should be heard by those devoted to dharma —
Verse 39 (padma.2.125.39)
caturvargasya vai siddhirjāyate tasya nānyathā sapādaṁ lakṣamekaṁ tu brahmākhyaṁ puṣkaraṁ śṛṇu
— for such a one alone is the accomplishment of the fourfold goal, and not otherwise. Hear now the count called Brahma's own — one lakh and a quarter of verses —
Verse 40 (padma.2.125.40)
kṛte yuge tu niṣpāpāḥ śṛṇvaṁti manujā dvija lakṣasyārddhaṁ tataḥ kṛtsnaṁ purāṇaṁ padmasaṁjñakam
— in the Krita age, sinless men, brahmin, hear it in full. After that, half a lakh — this entire Purana named Padma —
Verse 41 (padma.2.125.41)
ślokānāṁ tu sahasrābhyāṁ dvābhyāmeva tathādhikam tretāyuge tathā prāpte yadā śroṣyaṁti mānavāḥ
— together with two thousand verses more besides — in the Treta age, when men come to hear it thus.
Verse 42 (padma.2.125.42)
caturvargaphalaṁ bhuktvā te yāsyaṁti hariṁ punaḥ dvāviṁśatisahasrāṇi saṁhitāpadmasaṁjñitā
Having enjoyed the fruit of the fourfold goal, they attain Hari once more. Twenty-two thousand verses — the collection called Padma —
Verse 43 (padma.2.125.43)
dvāpare kathitā vipra brahmaṇā paramātmanā dvādaśaiva sahasrāṇāṁ padmākhyā sā tu saṁhitā
— was told, brahmin, in the Dvapara age, by Brahma, the Supreme Self. That collection called Padma, of only twelve thousand verses —
Verse 44 (padma.2.125.44)
kalau yuge paṭhiṣyaṁti mānavā viṣṇutatparāḥ ekorthaścaikabhāvaśca caturṣvapi pravartitaḥ
— that men devoted to Vishnu shall recite in the Kali age. One meaning, one essential sense, holds equally true across all four ages,
Verse 45 (padma.2.125.45)
saṁhitāsveva vipreṁdra śeṣākhyānapravistaraḥ dvādaśaiva sahasrāṇi nāśaṁ yāsyaṁti sattama
— yet, O foremost of brahmins, within these very collections, the wider elaboration of the remaining secondary tales, twelve thousand verses in all, shall pass into loss, worthy one.
Verse 46 (padma.2.125.46)
kalau yuge tu saṁprāpte prathamaṁ hi bhaviṣyati bhūmikhaṁḍaṁ naraḥ śrutvāsarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
When the Kali age has fully arrived, this shall come to pass first of all: a man, having heard this Bhumikhanda, is freed from every sin,
Verse 47 (padma.2.125.47)
mucyate sarvaduḥkhebhyaḥ sarvarogaiḥ pramucyate anyatsarvaṁ parityajya japaṁ dānaṁ tathā śrutam
— he is freed from every sorrow, freed from every disease. Setting aside everything else — japa, giving, and other forms of learning —
Verse 48 (padma.2.125.48)
śrotavyaṁ hi prayatnena padmākhyaṁ pāpanāśanam prathamaṁ sṛṣṭikhaṁḍaṁ tu dvitīyaṁ bhūmikhaṁḍakam
— this sin-destroying work, named Padma, alone should be heard with true effort. The first is the Srishti-khanda, the second this Bhumi-khanda,
Verse 49 (padma.2.125.49)
tṛtīyaṁ svargakhaṁḍaṁ ca pātālaṁ tu caturthakam paṁcamaṁ cottaraṁ khaṁḍaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
the third the Svarga-khanda, and the fourth the Patala-khanda; the fifth, the Uttara-khanda, a destroyer of every sin.
Verse 50 (padma.2.125.50)
yaḥ śṛṇoti naro bhaktyā paṁcakhaṁḍānyanukramāt gopradānasahasrasya mānavo labhate phalam
Whatever man hears, with devotion, all five khandas in their proper order, that man obtains the fruit of the gift of a thousand cows.
Verse 51 (padma.2.125.51)
mahābhāgyena labhyaṁte paṁcakhaṁḍāni bhūsurāḥ śrutāni mokṣadāni syuḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
By the greatest good fortune alone do brahmins, the gods of this earth, obtain these five khandas; once heard, they prove to be bestowers of liberation — this is true, this is true, without any doubt.
