Verse 1 (padma.2.27.1)

सूत उवाच- स प्रभुः सर्वलोकेशो ह्यभिषिच्य ततो नृपम् । पृथुं वेनस्य तनयं सर्वराज्ये महाप्रभुम्

sūta uvāca- sa prabhuḥ sarvalokeśo hyabhiṣicya tato nṛpam pṛthuṁ venasya tanayaṁ sarvarājye mahāprabhum

Suta said: That Lord, master of all the worlds, having consecrated the king Prithu, son of Vena, as the great sovereign over the whole kingdom—

Verse 2 (padma.2.27.2)

महाबाहुं महाकायं यथेंद्रं च सुरेश्वरम् । क्रमेणापि ततो ब्रह्मा राज्यानि च विचार्य वै

mahābāhuṁ mahākāyaṁ yatheṁdraṁ ca sureśvaram krameṇāpi tato brahmā rājyāni ca vicārya vai

—mighty-armed, mighty-bodied, like Indra, lord of the gods; then Brahma, in due order, having considered the various realms—

Verse 3 (padma.2.27.3)

यद्यस्यापि भवेद्योग्यं दातुं तदुपचक्रमे । वृक्षाणां ब्राह्मणानां च ग्रहर्क्षाणां तथैव च

yadyasyāpi bhavedyogyaṁ dātuṁ tadupacakrame vṛkṣāṇāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ ca graharkṣāṇāṁ tathaiva ca

—began to grant to each whatever was fitting for it: of trees, of brahmins, and likewise of the planets and constellations—

Verse 4 (padma.2.27.4)

सोमं राज्ये सोभ्यषिंचत्तपसां च महामतिः । धर्माणां धर्मयज्ञानां पुण्यानां पुण्यतेजसाम्

somaṁ rājye sobhyaṣiṁcattapasāṁ ca mahāmatiḥ dharmāṇāṁ dharmayajñānāṁ puṇyānāṁ puṇyatejasām

—that great-minded one consecrated Soma, the Moon, to the kingship, and of austerities, of dharmas, of sacrifices to dharma, of merits, and of meritorious splendors—

Verse 5 (padma.2.27.5)

अपां मध्ये तथा देवं तीर्थानां हि तथैव च । वरुणं सोभिषिच्यैव रत्नानां च द्विजोत्तम

apāṁ madhye tathā devaṁ tīrthānāṁ hi tathaiva ca varuṇaṁ sobhiṣicyaiva ratnānāṁ ca dvijottama

—likewise, among the waters, and of sacred fords too, he consecrated the god Varuna, and, O best of brahmins, of jewels—

Verse 6 (padma.2.27.6)

अन्येषां सर्वयक्षाणां राज्ये वैश्रवणं पुनः । विष्णुमेव महाप्राज्ञमादित्यानां पितामहः

anyeṣāṁ sarvayakṣāṇāṁ rājye vaiśravaṇaṁ punaḥ viṣṇumeva mahāprājñamādityānāṁ pitāmahaḥ

—of the other yakshas too, to the kingdom he consecrated Vaishravana, Kubera, once more; and Vishnu himself, the greatly wise one, was set over the Adityas by that Grandsire—

Verse 7 (padma.2.27.7)

राज्ये संस्थापयामास जनता हितहेतवे । सर्वेषामेव पुण्यानां दक्षमेव प्रजापतिम्

rājye saṁsthāpayāmāsa janatā hitahetave sarveṣāmeva puṇyānāṁ dakṣameva prajāpatim

—he established him in that kingdom, for the welfare of the people. Over all meritorious things he set Daksha himself, the Lord of creatures—

Verse 8 (padma.2.27.8)

समर्थं सर्वधर्मज्ञं प्रजापतिगणेश्वरम् । प्रह्रादं सर्वधर्मज्ञं स हि राज्ये न्यरूपयत्

samarthaṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ prajāpatigaṇeśvaram prahrādaṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ sa hi rājye nyarūpayat

—capable, knower of every dharma, lord over the hosts of Prajapatis. And Prahlada, knower of every dharma, he indeed appointed to the kingdom—

Verse 9 (padma.2.27.9)

दैत्यानां दानवानां च विष्णुतेजः समन्वितम् । यमं वैवस्वतं धर्मं पैत्र्ये राज्येभिषिच्य च

daityānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca viṣṇutejaḥ samanvitam yamaṁ vaivasvataṁ dharmaṁ paitrye rājyebhiṣicya ca

—of the daityas and danavas, joined with the very splendor of Vishnu. And, consecrating Yama, son of Vivasvat, the very embodiment of dharma, to the kingdom of the ancestors—

Verse 10 (padma.2.27.10)

यक्षराक्षसभूतानां पिशाचोरगसर्पिणाम् । योगिनीनां च सर्वासां वैतालानां महात्मनाम्

yakṣarākṣasabhūtānāṁ piśācoragasarpiṇām yoginīnāṁ ca sarvāsāṁ vaitālānāṁ mahātmanām

—over yakshas, rakshasas, bhutas, pishachas, uragas, and serpents; over all the yoginis, and over the great-souled vetalas—

Verse 11 (padma.2.27.11)

कंकालानां हि सर्वेषां कूष्मांडानां तथैव च । पार्थिवानां च सर्वेषां गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम्

kaṁkālānāṁ hi sarveṣāṁ kūṣmāṁḍānāṁ tathaiva ca pārthivānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ giriśaṁ śūlapāṇinam

—over all the kankalas, and likewise the kushmandas; and over all earthly beings, Girisha, the trident-bearer—

Verse 12 (padma.2.27.12)

पर्वतानां हि सर्वेषां हिमवंतं महागिरिम् । नदीनां च तडागानां वापिकानां तथैव च

parvatānāṁ hi sarveṣāṁ himavaṁtaṁ mahāgirim nadīnāṁ ca taḍāgānāṁ vāpikānāṁ tathaiva ca

—over all the mountains, the great mountain Himavan; and over the rivers, the lakes, and likewise the wells—

Verse 13 (padma.2.27.13)

कुंडानां कूपराज्ये हि दिव्येषु च सुरेश्वरः । सागरं स्थापितं पुण्यं सर्वतीर्थमनुत्तमम्

kuṁḍānāṁ kūparājye hi divyeṣu ca sureśvaraḥ sāgaraṁ sthāpitaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvatīrthamanuttamam

—over the pools and wells, and among the divine ones, that lord of gods established the sacred ocean, supreme among all sacred fords—

Verse 14 (padma.2.27.14)

गंधर्वाणां तु सर्वेषां राज्ये पुण्ये तथैव च । चित्ररथं ततो ब्रह्मा अभिषिच्य सुरेश्वरः

gaṁdharvāṇāṁ tu sarveṣāṁ rājye puṇye tathaiva ca citrarathaṁ tato brahmā abhiṣicya sureśvaraḥ

—and over all the gandharvas, in that meritorious kingdom likewise, Brahma, lord of the gods, then consecrated Chitraratha—

Verse 15 (padma.2.27.15)

नागानां पुण्यवीर्याणां वासुकिं च चतुर्मुखः । सर्पाणां तु तथा राज्ये अभिषिच्य स तक्षकम्

nāgānāṁ puṇyavīryāṇāṁ vāsukiṁ ca caturmukhaḥ sarpāṇāṁ tu tathā rājye abhiṣicya sa takṣakam

—and, over the meritorious, mighty nagas, the four-faced one consecrated Vasuki; and over the kingdom of serpents likewise he consecrated Takshaka—

Verse 16 (padma.2.27.16)

वारणानां ततो राज्ये ऐरावणमसिंचत । अश्वानां चैव सर्वेषामुच्चैःश्रवसमेव च

vāraṇānāṁ tato rājye airāvaṇamasiṁcata aśvānāṁ caiva sarveṣāmuccaiḥśravasameva ca

—then, over the kingdom of elephants he consecrated Airavata; and over all the horses, Uchchaihshravas indeed—

Verse 17 (padma.2.27.17)

पक्षिणां चैव सर्वेषां वैनतेयमथापि सः । मृगाणां च ततो राज्ये ब्रह्मा सिंहमथादिशत्

pakṣiṇāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ vainateyamathāpi saḥ mṛgāṇāṁ ca tato rājye brahmā siṁhamathādiśat

—and over all the birds, the son of Vinata, Garuda; and then, over the kingdom of the deer, Brahma appointed the lion—

Verse 18 (padma.2.27.18)

गोवृषं तु गवां मध्ये अभिषिच्य प्रजापतिः । वनस्पतीनां सर्वेषां प्लक्षमेव पितामहः

govṛṣaṁ tu gavāṁ madhye abhiṣicya prajāpatiḥ vanaspatīnāṁ sarveṣāṁ plakṣameva pitāmahaḥ

—and among the cattle, the Lord of creatures consecrated the bull; and over all the forest trees, the Grandsire consecrated the fig tree indeed—

Verse 19 (padma.2.27.19)

एवं राज्यानि सर्वाणि संस्थाप्य च पितामहः । दिशापालांस्ततो ब्रह्मा स्थापयामास सत्तमः

evaṁ rājyāni sarvāṇi saṁsthāpya ca pitāmahaḥ diśāpālāṁstato brahmā sthāpayāmāsa sattamaḥ

Thus, having established all these kingdoms, that Grandsire, that worthy Brahma, then established the guardians of the directions.

Verse 20 (padma.2.27.20)

वैराजस्य तथा पुत्रं पूर्वस्यां दिशि सत्तमः । सुधन्वानं दिशःपालं राजानं सोभ्यषिंचत

vairājasya tathā putraṁ pūrvasyāṁ diśi sattamaḥ sudhanvānaṁ diśaḥpālaṁ rājānaṁ sobhyaṣiṁcata

That worthy one consecrated the son of Viraja, Sudhanvan, as the guardian king of the eastern direction.

Verse 21 (padma.2.27.21)

दक्षिणस्यां महात्मानं कर्दमस्य प्रजापतेः । पुत्रं शंखपदं नाम राजानं सोभ्यषिंचत

dakṣiṇasyāṁ mahātmānaṁ kardamasya prajāpateḥ putraṁ śaṁkhapadaṁ nāma rājānaṁ sobhyaṣiṁcata

In the southern direction, he consecrated that great soul, named Shankhapada, son of the Lord of creatures Kardama, as king.

Verse 22 (padma.2.27.22)

पश्चिमायां तथा ब्रह्मा वरुणस्य प्रजापतेः । पुत्रं च पुष्करं नाम सोऽभ्यषिंचत्प्रजापतिः

paścimāyāṁ tathā brahmā varuṇasya prajāpateḥ putraṁ ca puṣkaraṁ nāma so'bhyaṣiṁcatprajāpatiḥ

In the western direction, that Prajapati Brahma likewise consecrated Pushkara, son of the Lord of creatures Varuna.

Verse 23 (padma.2.27.23)

उत्तरस्यां दिशि ब्रह्म नलकूबरमेव च । एवं चैवाभ्यषिंचच्च दिक्पालान्समहौजसः

uttarasyāṁ diśi brahma nalakūbarameva ca evaṁ caivābhyaṣiṁcacca dikpālānsamahaujasaḥ

In the northern direction, Brahma consecrated Nalakubara indeed. Thus did he consecrate the guardians of the directions, mighty ones all.

Verse 24 (padma.2.27.24)

यैरियं पृथिवी सर्वा सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना । यथाप्रदेशमद्यापि धर्मेण प्रतिपाल्यते

yairiyaṁ pṛthivī sarvā saptadvīpā sapattanā yathāpradeśamadyāpi dharmeṇa pratipālyate

—by them this whole earth, with its seven continents and its cities, is still protected today, each in its own region, through dharma.

Verse 25 (padma.2.27.25)

पृथुश्चैवं महाभागः सोभिषिक्तो नराधिपः । राजसूयादिभिः सर्वैरभिषिक्तो महामखैः

pṛthuścaivaṁ mahābhāgaḥ sobhiṣikto narādhipaḥ rājasūyādibhiḥ sarvairabhiṣikto mahāmakhaiḥ

Thus was that greatly fortunate king Prithu consecrated, the lord of men, consecrated with all the great sacrifices beginning with the Rajasuya—

Verse 26 (padma.2.27.26)

विधिना वेददृष्टेन राजराज्ये महीपतिः । चाक्षुषे नाम्नि संपुण्ये अतीते च महौजसि

vidhinā vedadṛṣṭena rājarājye mahīpatiḥ cākṣuṣe nāmni saṁpuṇye atīte ca mahaujasi

—according to the rite seen in the Veda, that lord of the earth was consecrated to the kingship of kings; in the greatly meritorious, mighty Manvantara named Chakshusha, now past—

Verse 27 (padma.2.27.27)

मन्वंतरे महाभाग देवपुण्यहितैषिणि । ततो वैवस्वतायैव मनवे राज्यमादिशत्

manvaṁtare mahābhāga devapuṇyahitaiṣiṇi tato vaivasvatāyaiva manave rājyamādiśat

—O greatly fortunate one, that Manvantara devoted to the merit and welfare of the gods. Thereafter he assigned the kingdom to the Manu Vaivasvata himself.

Verse 28 (padma.2.27.28)

विस्तरं चापि व्याख्यास्ये पृथोश्चैव महात्मनः । यदि मामेव विप्रेन्द्र शुश्रूषसि अतंद्रितः

vistaraṁ cāpi vyākhyāsye pṛthoścaiva mahātmanaḥ yadi māmeva viprendra śuśrūṣasi ataṁdritaḥ

I shall relate in full the account of that great soul Prithu too, O foremost of brahmins, if you attend to me untiringly.

Verse 29 (padma.2.27.29)

एतदेवमधिष्ठानं महत्पुण्यं प्रकीर्तितम् । सर्वेष्वेव पुराणेषु एतद्धि निश्चितं सदा

etadevamadhiṣṭhānaṁ mahatpuṇyaṁ prakīrtitam sarveṣveva purāṇeṣu etaddhi niścitaṁ sadā

Thus has this great, meritorious foundation been declared; this indeed is affirmed always in all the Puranas.

Verse 30 (padma.2.27.30)

पुण्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं स्वर्गवासकरं शुभम् । धन्यं पवित्रमायुष्यं पुत्रदं वृद्धिदायकम्

puṇyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṁ svargavāsakaraṁ śubham dhanyaṁ pavitramāyuṣyaṁ putradaṁ vṛddhidāyakam

—meritorious, glorious, life-extending, bestowing residence in heaven, auspicious; blessed, purifying, life-extending, granting sons, and bestowing prosperity—

Verse 31 (padma.2.27.31)

यः शृणोति नरो भक्त्या भावध्यानसमन्वितः । अश्वमेधफलं तस्य जायते नात्र संशयः

yaḥ śṛṇoti naro bhaktyā bhāvadhyānasamanvitaḥ aśvamedhaphalaṁ tasya jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

—whatever man hears this with devotion, joined with true feeling and meditation, obtains for himself the fruit of the horse-sacrifice, no doubt of it.
