Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 29
Prithu Levels the Earth and Milks Her for His Subjects
Verse 1 (padma.2.29.1)
pṛthuruvāca- hate caiva mahāpāpe ekasminpāpacāriṇi lokāḥ sukhena jīvaṁti sādhavaḥ puṇyadarśinaḥ
Prithu said: When one greatly sinful, sin-conducted being is slain, the worlds live happily, and the righteous behold merit.
Verse 2 (padma.2.29.2)
tasmādekaṁ prahartavyaṁ pāpiṣṭhaṁ pāpacetanam tasmāttvāṁ hi haniṣyāmi sarvasattvapraṇāśinīm
Therefore one most sinful, of sinful mind, must be struck down; therefore I shall indeed slay you, destroyer of all beings.
Verse 3 (padma.2.29.3)
tvayā bījāni sarvāṇi luptānyetāni sāṁpratam grāsaṁ kṛtvā sthirībhūtvā prajāṁ hatvā kva yāsyasi
By you all these seeds have now been destroyed; having consumed them and become unyielding, having thereby slain my subjects, where will you go?
Verse 4 (padma.2.29.4)
hate pāpe durācāre sukhaṁ jīvaṁtisādhavaḥ tasmātpāpaṁ prahaṁtavyaṁ satyamevaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
When the sinful, ill-conducted one is slain, the righteous live happily; therefore sin must indeed be struck down — this is truly so, no doubt.
Verse 5 (padma.2.29.5)
pālitavyaṁ prayatnena yasmāddharmaḥ pravarddhate bhavatyā tu mahatpāpaṁ prajāsaṁkṣayakārakam
That by which dharma flourishes must be protected with effort; but by you a great sin, the destroyer of my subjects, has been done.
Verse 6 (padma.2.29.6)
ekasyārthena yo hanyādātmano vā parasya vā lokopatāpakaṁ hatvā na bhavettasya pātakam
He who slays for the sake of one — whether for himself or for another — having slain one who torments the world, incurs no sin thereby.
Verse 7 (padma.2.29.7)
sukhameṣyaṁti bahavo yasmiṁstu nihate śubhe vasudhe nihate duṣṭe pātakaṁ nopapātakam
—when that one is slain, many attain happiness, O auspicious one; when the wicked is slain, O Earth, there is no sin, nor even minor sin.
Verse 8 (padma.2.29.8)
prajānimittaṁ tvāmeva haniṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ yadi me puṇyasaṁyuktaṁ vacanaṁ na kariṣyati
For the sake of my subjects I shall indeed slay you, no doubt of it, if you do not heed my meritorious word.
Verse 9 (padma.2.29.9)
jagato'sya hitārthāya sādhu caiva vasuṁdhare haniṣye tvāṁ śitairbāṇairmadvākyāttu parāṁmukhīm
For the welfare of this world, and rightly so, O Earth — I shall slay you with sharpened arrows, should you turn away from my very word.
Verse 10 (padma.2.29.10)
svīyena tejasā caiva puṇyāṁ trailokyavāsinīm prajāṁ caiva dhariṣyāmi dharmeṇāpi na saṁśayaḥ
By my own splendor I shall sustain both you, meritorious dweller of the three worlds, and my subjects too, through dharma, no doubt of it.
Verse 11 (padma.2.29.11)
macchāsanaṁ samāsthāya dharmayuktaṁ vasuṁdhare imāḥ prajā ājñayā me saṁjīvaya sadaiva hi
Abiding by my command, joined with dharma, O Earth, sustain these my subjects always, by my very order.
Verse 12 (padma.2.29.12)
evaṁ me śāsanaṁ bhadre adya yarhi kariṣyasi tataḥ prīto'smi te nityaṁ gopāyiṣyāmi sarvadā
If you carry out my command thus today, O gracious one, then I shall be ever pleased with you, and shall protect you always.
Verse 13 (padma.2.29.13)
tvāmeva hi na saṁdeha anye caiva nṛpottamāḥ dhenurūpeṇa sā pṛthvī bāṇāṁcitakalevarā
—you indeed, no doubt, and other excellent kings too.' That earth, in the form of a cow, her body pierced with arrows—
Verse 14 (padma.2.29.14)
uvācedaṁ pṛthuṁ vainyaṁ dharmādhāraṁ mahāmatim dharaṇyuvāca- tavādeśaṁ mahārāja satyapuṇyārthasaṁyutam
—spoke thus to Prithu, son of Vena, the very foundation of dharma, that great-minded one. The Earth said: 'Your command, O great king, joined with truth, merit, and purpose—'
Verse 15 (padma.2.29.15)
prajānimittamatyarthaṁ vidhāsyāmi na saṁśayaḥ udyamenāpi puṇyena upāyena nareśvara
—'I shall indeed carry out exceedingly, for the sake of your subjects, no doubt of it, through effort, through merit, through right means, O lord of men.'
Verse 16 (padma.2.29.16)
samāraṁbhāḥ prasiddhyaṁti puṇyāścaivāpyupakramāḥ upāyaṁ paśya rājeṁdra yena tvaṁ satyavānbhaveḥ
'Undertakings succeed, and meritorious endeavors too; consider the means, O king of kings, by which you may become true to your word—'
Verse 17 (padma.2.29.17)
dhārayethāḥ prajāścemā yena sarvāḥ pravarddhaye saṁlagnāścottamā bāṇā mamāṁge te śilāśitāḥ
—'by which you may sustain these your subjects, and by which I may make them all prosper. Your excellent arrows, sharpened on stone, remain lodged in my body—'
Verse 18 (padma.2.29.18)
samuddhara svayaṁ rājaṁśchalyaṁti bhṛśameva te samāṁ kuru mahārāja tiṣṭhenmayi yathā payaḥ
—'draw them out yourself, O king; they wound me exceedingly. Make me level, O great king, so that milk may abide in me.'
Verse 19 (padma.2.29.19)
sūta uvāca- dhanuṣogreṇa tāñchailānnānārūpāngurūṁstathā utsārayaṁstataḥ sarvāṁ samarūpāṁ cakāra saḥ
Suta said: With the tip of his fierce bow, pushing aside those mountains of various forms and great weight, he then made her level in form.
Verse 20 (padma.2.29.20)
tadāprabhṛti te śailā vṛddhimāpurdvijottamāḥ tasyā aṁgātsvayaṁ bāṇānsvakīyānnṛpanaṁdanaḥ
From that time onward, O best of brahmins, those mountains gained in height. From her very body, that royal prince himself drew out his own arrows—
Verse 21 (padma.2.29.21)
samuddhṛtya tato vainyaḥ prītena manasā tadā gartāśca kaṁdarāścaiva bāṇāghātaiḥ samīkṛtāḥ
—having drawn them out, that son of Vena, then, with a pleased mind, saw that the pits and hollows made by the blows of his arrows were made level.
Verse 22 (padma.2.29.22)
evaṁ pṛthvadyaṁsamāṁ sarvāṁ cakāra puṇyavarddhanaḥ samīkṛtya mahābhāgo vatsaṁ tasyā vyakalpayat
Thus did that increaser of merit make the whole earth level, as it is today; having leveled her, that greatly fortunate one appointed a calf for her.
Verse 23 (padma.2.29.23)
manuṁ svāyaṁbhuvaṁ pūrvaṁ pariciṁtya punaḥ punaḥ atīteṣvatha sarveṣu manvaṁtareṣu sattamāḥ
Reflecting again and again first upon Svayambhuva Manu, and in all the Manvantaras that had passed before, O worthy ones—
Verse 24 (padma.2.29.24)
viṣamatvaṁ gatā bhūmiḥ paṁthā nāsīcca kutracit samāni viṣamāṇyevaṁ svayamāsandvijottamāḥ
—the earth had become uneven, and there was no path anywhere; level and uneven places existed of themselves thus, O best of brahmins.
Verse 25 (padma.2.29.25)
pūrvaṁ manoścākṣuṣasya prāpte caivāṁtare tadā jāte pūrvavisarge ca viṣame ca dharātale
Before, in the Manvantara of Chakshusha Manu, when it had come, and when the earlier creation had occurred, the surface of the earth being then uneven—
Verse 26 (padma.2.29.26)
grāmāṇāṁ ca purāṇāṁ ca pattanānāṁ tathaiva ca deśānāṁ kṣetrapannānāṁ maryādā na hi dṛśyate
—no boundary at all was seen for villages, cities, or towns, nor for lands or the fields belonging to them.
Verse 27 (padma.2.29.27)
kṛṣirnaiva na vāṇijyaṁ na gorakṣā pravartate nānṛtaṁ bhāṣate kaścinna lobho na ca matsaraḥ
There was neither agriculture, nor trade, nor cattle-herding; no one spoke falsehood, there was no greed, and no envy.
Verse 28 (padma.2.29.28)
nābhimānaṁ ca vai pāpaṁ na karoti kadā kila vaivasvatasya saṁprāpte aṁtare dvijasattama
No pride existed either, and indeed no one ever committed sin. When the Manvantara of Vaivasvata had come, O worthy brahmin—
Verse 29 (padma.2.29.29)
vainyasya saṁbhavātpūrvaṁ prajānāmeva saṁbhavaḥ imāḥ prajā dvijāḥ sarvā nivāsaṁ samarocayan
—before the birth of the son of Vena, the birth of subjects themselves had already occurred; all these subjects, O brahmins, delighted in their dwelling—
Verse 30 (padma.2.29.30)
kvacidbhūmau girau kvāpi nadītīreṣu vai tadā kuṁjeṣu sarvatīrtheṣu sāgarasya taṭeṣu ca
—somewhere on the ground, somewhere on a mountain, somewhere then along riverbanks, in groves, at every sacred ford, and on the shores of the ocean.
Verse 31 (padma.2.29.31)
nivāsaṁ cakrire sarvāḥ prajāḥ puṇyena vai tadā tāsāmāhāraḥ saṁjātaḥ phalamūlamadhustathā
All the subjects made their dwellings there through merit at that time; their food was fruit, roots, and honey.
Verse 32 (padma.2.29.32)
mahatā kṛcchreṇa tāsāmāhāraśca dvijottamāḥ pṛthurvainyaḥ samālokya prajānāṁ kaṣṭameva hi
Only with great hardship did they obtain their food, O best of brahmins. Prithu, son of Vena, seeing this very distress of his subjects—
Verse 33 (padma.2.29.33)
svāyaṁbhuvo manurvatsaḥ kalpitastena bhūbhujā svapāṇiḥ kalpitastena pātramevaṁ mahāmate
—appointed Svayambhuva Manu as the calf, that lord of the earth; his own hand he made into the very vessel, O great-minded one, in this way.
Verse 34 (padma.2.29.34)
sa pṛthuḥ puruṣavyāghro dudoha vasudhāṁ tadā sarvasasyamayaṁ kṣīraṁ sasarvānnaṁ guṇānvitam
That Prithu, tiger among men, then milked the earth; milk made wholly of every crop, joined with every grain and every good quality—
Verse 35 (padma.2.29.35)
tena puṇyena cānnena sudhākalpena tāḥ prajāḥ tṛptiṁ nayaṁti devānvai prajāḥ pitṝṁstathāparān
—by that meritorious food, resembling very nectar, those subjects attained satisfaction, offering it too to the gods and ancestors and to others.
Verse 36 (padma.2.29.36)
prasādāttasya vainyasya sukhaṁ jīvaṁti tāḥ prajāḥ devebhyaśca pitṛbhyaśca datvā cānnaṁ prajāstataḥ
By the grace of that son of Vena, those subjects lived happily; having given food to the gods and to the ancestors, the subjects then—
Verse 37 (padma.2.29.37)
brāhmaṇebhyo viśeṣeṇaatithibhyastathaiva ca paścādbhuṁjaṁti puṇyāstāḥ prajāḥ sarvā dvijottamāḥ
—gave especially to brahmins, and likewise to guests; only afterward did those meritorious subjects, all of them, eat, O best of brahmins.
Verse 38 (padma.2.29.38)
yajñaiścānye yajaṁtyeva tarpayaṁti janārdanam tena cānnena deveśaṁ tṛptiṁ gacchaṁti devatāḥ
Others worshipped through sacrifices, satisfying Janardana; by that very food, the gods too attained satisfaction, pleasing the lord of gods.
Verse 39 (padma.2.29.39)
punarvarṣati parjanyaḥ preṣito mādhavena ca tasmātpuṇyā mahauṣadhyaḥ saṁbhavaṁti supuṇyadāḥ
Again the rain-cloud rains, sent forth by Madhava; from that, meritorious great herbs come into being, bestowers of great merit.
Verse 40 (padma.2.29.40)
sasyajātāni sarvāṇi pṛthurvainyaḥ prajāpatiḥ tenānnena prajāḥ sarvā vartaṁte'dyāpi nityaśaḥ
All the various crops came from that Lord of creatures, Prithu, son of Vena; by that food all his subjects live constantly, even today.
Verse 41 (padma.2.29.41)
ṛṣibhiścaiva militairdugdhā ceyaṁ vasuṁdharā punarviprairmahābhāgyaiḥ satyavadbhiḥ suraistathā
And this earth was milked too by the sages gathered together, and again by greatly fortunate, truthful brahmins, and by the gods likewise.
Verse 42 (padma.2.29.42)
somo vatsasvarūpobhūddogdhā devaguruḥ svayam ūrjaṁ kṣīraṁ payaḥ kalpaṁ yena jīvaṁti cāmarāḥ
—Soma took the very form of the calf, and the teacher of the gods, Brihaspati, himself was the milker; the milk was vigor and nourishment, by which the immortals live.
Verse 43 (padma.2.29.43)
teṣāṁ satyena puṇyena sarve jīvaṁti jaṁtavaḥ satyapuṇye pravartaṁte ṛṣidugdhā vasuṁdharā
By the truth and merit of these, all beings live; through truth and merit do they conduct themselves — the earth milked by the sages.
Verse 44 (padma.2.29.44)
athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi yathā dugdhā iyaṁ dharā pitṛbhiśca purā vatsa vidhinā yena vai tadā
Now I shall relate how this earth was milked, by the ancestors of old, my son, and by what rite it was done then.
Verse 45 (padma.2.29.45)
supātraṁ rājataṁ kṛtvā svadhā kṣīraṁ sudhānvitam parikalpya yamaṁ vatsaṁ dogdhā cāṁtaka eva saḥ
Making a fine silver vessel, and milking Svadha, milk endowed with nectar, appointing Yama as the calf, Antaka, Death, himself was the milker.
Verse 46 (padma.2.29.46)
nāgaiḥ sarpaistato dugdhā takṣakaṁ vatsameva ca alābupātramādāya viṣaṁ kṣīraṁ dvijottamāḥ
Then, by the nagas and serpents, she was milked, with Takshaka as the calf; taking a gourd vessel, they milked venom as the milk, O best of brahmins.
Verse 47 (padma.2.29.47)
nāgānāṁ tu tathā dogdhā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pratāpavān sarpā nāgā dvijaśreṣṭhāstena vartaṁti cātulāḥ
For the nagas, the mighty Dhritarashtra was likewise the milker; the serpents and nagas, O best of brahmins, live by that unmatched milk.
Verse 48 (padma.2.29.48)
nāgā vartaṁti tenāpi hyatyugreṇa dvijottamāḥ viṣeṇa ghorarūpeṇa sarpāścaiva bhayānakāḥ
The nagas live by that too, exceedingly fierce, O best of brahmins; by venom of dreadful form do the fearsome serpents also live—
Verse 49 (padma.2.29.49)
tenaiva vartayaṁtyugrā mahākāyā mahābalāḥ tadāhārāstadācārāstadvīryāstatparākramāḥ
—by that alone do those fierce, mighty-bodied, greatly powerful ones subsist, their food, their conduct, their might, and their valor of that same nature.
Verse 50 (padma.2.29.50)
athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi yathā dugdhā vasuṁdharā asurairdānavaiḥ sarvaiḥ kalpayitvā dvijottamāḥ
Now I shall relate how the earth was milked by the asuras and all the danavas, having appointed their milker, O best of brahmins.
Verse 51 (padma.2.29.51)
pātramatrānnasadṛśamāyasaṁ sarvakāmikam kṣīraṁ māyāmayaṁ kṛtvā sarvārātivināśanam
With an iron vessel here, fashioned like a food-vessel, granting every desire, they made the milk wholly of maya, the destroyer of every enemy.
Verse 52 (padma.2.29.52)
teṣāmabhūtsa vai vatso virocanaḥ pratāpavān ṛtvigdvimūrddhā daityānāṁ madhurdogdhā mahābalaḥ
Their calf was the mighty Virochana; the two-headed priest of the daityas, Madhu, mighty, was the milker.
Verse 53 (padma.2.29.53)
tayā hi māyayā daityāḥ pravarttaṁte mahābalāḥ mahāprajñā mahākāyā mahātejaḥ parākramāḥ
By that very maya do the mighty daityas conduct themselves — of great wisdom, mighty-bodied, of great splendor and valor.
Verse 54 (padma.2.29.54)
tadbalaṁ pauruṣaṁ teṣāṁ tena jīvaṁti dānavāḥ tayaite māyayādyāpi sarvamāyā dvijottamāḥ
That is their very strength and manliness; by that the danavas live. By that very maya, even to this day, all is illusion for them, O best of brahmins—
Verse 55 (padma.2.29.55)
pravartaṁte mitaprajñāste tadeṣāmidaṁ balam tathā tu dugdhā yakṣaiḥ sā sarvādhārāsu medinī
—those of limited wisdom conduct themselves thus; such indeed is their strength. And likewise was that all-sustaining earth milked by the yakshas—
Verse 56 (padma.2.29.56)
iti śuśruma vipreṁdrāḥ purākalpe mahātmabhiḥ aṁtardhānamayaṁ kṣīramayaspātre suvistare
—so we have heard, O foremost of brahmins, from great souls in a former age; the milk was made of the power of invisibility, in a broad iron vessel.
Verse 57 (padma.2.29.57)
vaiśravaṇo mahāprājñastadā vatsaḥ prakalpitaḥ maṇidharasya pitā puṇyaḥ prājño buddhimatāṁ varaḥ
The greatly wise Vaishravana was then appointed as the calf; that meritorious, wise father of Manidhara, foremost of the intelligent—
Verse 58 (padma.2.29.58)
dogdhā rajatanābhastu tasyāścāsīnmahāmatiḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvadharmajño yakṣarājasuto balī
—Rajatanabha, that great-minded, all-knowing, knower of every dharma, mighty son of the king of yakshas, was her milker.
Verse 59 (padma.2.29.59)
aṣṭabāhurmahātejā dviśīrṣaḥ sumahātapāḥ yakṣāvartaṁta tenāpi sarvadaiva dvijottamāḥ
Eight-armed, of great splendor, two-headed, of great austerity — by that too the yakshas ever conduct themselves, O best of brahmins.
Verse 60 (padma.2.29.60)
punardugdhā iyaṁ pṛthvī rākṣasaiśca mahābalaiḥ tathā caiṣā piśācaiśca sāturairdagdhavāribhiḥ
Again this earth was milked by the mighty rakshasas, and likewise by the pishachas too, hungry, drinking scorched water—
Verse 61 (padma.2.29.61)
utplutaṁ nṛkapālaṁ taṁ śāvapātramayaḥ kṛtam suprajāṁ bhoktukāmāste tīvrakopaparākramāḥ
—with a human skull as the vessel, made of iron like a corpse-vessel; those of fierce wrath and violence, desiring to devour the good subjects—
Verse 62 (padma.2.29.62)
dogdhā rajatanābhastu teṣāmāsīnmahābalaḥ sumālī nāma vatsaśca śoṇitaṁ kṣīrameva ca

Rakshasas, yatudhanas, and mighty pishachas, and yakshas too, and dreadful hosts of bhutas, live by that.
Verse 64 (padma.2.29.64)
gaṁdharvairapsarobhiśca punardugdhā vasuṁdharā kṛtvā vatsaṁ suvidvāṁsaṁ taiśca citrarathaṁ punaḥ
Again the earth was milked by the gandharvas and apsarases, having made the greatly learned Chitraratha the calf once more—

Verse 66 (padma.2.29.66)
dogdhā puṇyatamaścaiva tasyāśca dvijasattamāḥ śucigītaṁ mahātmānaḥ sukṣīraṁ duduhustadā
That most meritorious one was the milker; and, O worthy brahmins, those great souls milked pure song as the excellent milk from her at that time.
Verse 67 (padma.2.29.67)
gaṁdharvāstena jīvaṁti anyāścāpsarasastathā parvataiśca mahāpuṇyairdugdhā ceyaṁ vasuṁdharā
The gandharvas live by that, and the other apsarases too. And by the greatly meritorious mountains too was this earth milked.
Verse 68 (padma.2.29.68)
ratnāni vividhānyeva oṣadhīścāmṛtopamāḥ vatsaścaiva mahābhāgo himavānparikalpitaḥ
Various jewels indeed, and herbs resembling very nectar were milked; and the greatly fortunate Himavan was appointed as the calf.
Verse 69 (padma.2.29.69)
merurdogdhā ca saṁjātaḥ pātraṁ kṛtvā tu śailajam tena kṣīreṇa saṁvṛddhāḥ śailāḥ sarve mahaujasaḥ
Meru became the milker, making a mountain-born vessel; by that milk all the mighty mountains grew and flourished.
Verse 70 (padma.2.29.70)
punardugdhā mahāvṛkṣaiḥ puṇyaiḥ kalpadrumādibhiḥ pālāśaṁ pātrāmāninyuśchinnadagdhaprarohaṇam

Verse 71 (padma.2.29.71)
śālo dudoha puṣpāṁgaḥ plakṣo vatso'bhavattadā guhyakaiścāraṇaiḥ siddhairvidyādharagaṇaistadā
The Sala tree, flower-limbed, was the milker; the fig tree became the calf then. By the guhyakas, charanas, siddhas, and hosts of vidyadharas then—

dugdhā ceyaṁ sarvadhātrī sarvakāmapradāyinī yaṁ yamicchaṁti ye lokāḥ pātravatsaviśeṣaṇaiḥ
—this all-nurturing Earth, bestower of every desire, was milked too. Whatever any beings desire, through the particular vessel and calf—
Verse 73 (padma.2.29.73)
taistaisteṣāṁ dadātyeva kṣīraṁ sadbhāvamīdṛśam iyaṁ dhātrī vidhātrī tu iyaṁ śreṣṭhā vasuṁdharā
—by those very means she indeed grants them milk of such true nature. This is the Nurse, the Ordainer; this is the excellent Earth—
Verse 74 (padma.2.29.74)
sarvakāmadughā dhenuriyaṁ puṇyairalaṁkṛtā iyaṁ jyeṣṭhā pratiṣṭhā tu iyaṁ sṛṣṭiriyaṁ prajā
—the cow that yields every desire, this one adorned with merit; this is the eldest foundation, this is creation, this is progeny itself.
Verse 75 (padma.2.29.75)

sarveṣāṁ śreyasāṁ mātā sarvalokadharā iyam paṁcānāmapi bhūtānāṁ prakāśo rūpameva ca
The mother of every good thing, the sustainer of every world; the very manifestation and form of the five elements too.
Verse 78 (padma.2.29.78)
asīdiyaṁ samudrāṁtā medinīti pariśrutā madhukaiṭabhayoḥ kṛtsnā medasā samabhiplutā
She, bordered by the ocean, is renowned by the name Medini; entirely flooded by the fat of Madhu and Kaitabha—

teneyaṁ medinī nāma procyate brahmavādibhiḥ tatobhyupagamātprājña pṛthorvainyasya sattamāḥ
—for that reason she is called by the name Medini by the followers of Brahman-teaching. Then, by her approach to that wise, worthy Prithu, son of Vena—
Verse 80 (padma.2.29.80)
duhitṛtvamanuprāptā devī pṛthvīti cocyate tena rājñā dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ pāliteyaṁ vasuṁdharā
—she attained the status of a daughter, and, that goddess, is called Prithvi, after Prithu. By that king, O best of brahmins, this earth was protected—
Verse 81 (padma.2.29.81)
grāmādhāraṁ gṛhāṇāṁ ca purapattanamālinī sasyākaravatī sphītā sarvatīrthamayī dvijāḥ
—the foundation of villages, of homes, garlanded with cities and towns; rich in crops and mines, prosperous, made wholly of every sacred ford, O brahmins.
Verse 82 (padma.2.29.82)

pṛthurvainyo mahābhāgaḥ sarvakarmaprakāśakaḥ yathā viṣṇuryathā brahmā yathā rudraḥ sanātanaḥ
Prithu, son of Vena, that greatly fortunate one, revealer of every action — just as Vishnu, just as Brahma, just as the eternal Rudra—
Verse 84 (padma.2.29.84)
namaskāryāstrayo devā devādyairbrahmavādibhiḥ brāhmaṇairṛṣibhiḥ sarvairnamaskāryo nṛpottamaḥ
—those three gods are worthy of homage by the gods and by the followers of Brahman-teaching, so too that best of kings is worthy of homage by brahmins and all sages.
Verse 85 (padma.2.29.85)

He who established the varnas and ashramas, the sustainer of every world — by earthly kings too, greatly fortunate ones, desiring kingship here—
Verse 86 (padma.2.29.86)

namaskāryo mahārājo vṛttidātā mahībhṛtām evaṁ pātraviśeṣāśca mayā khyātā dvijottamāḥ
—that great king, giver of sustenance to the earth's rulers, is worthy of homage. Thus have the particular vessels been declared by me, O best of brahmins—
Verse 88 (padma.2.29.88)
vatsānāṁ suviśeṣāśca dogdhṝṇāṁ bhavadagrataḥ kṣīrasyāpi viśeṣaṁ tu yathoddiṣṭaṁ hi bhūbhujā
—the particular calves, and the milkers, before you; and the particular nature of the milk too, just as designated by that lord of the earth—
Verse 89 (padma.2.29.89)
samākhyātaṁ tathāgre ca bhavatāṁ vai yathārthataḥ dhanyaṁ yaśasyamārogyaṁ puṇyaṁ pāpapraṇāśanam
—all this has thus been declared before you truthfully. Blessed, glorious, health-giving, meritorious, destroying sin—
Verse 90 (padma.2.29.90)
pṛthorvainyasya caritaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti dvijottamāḥ tasya bhāgīrathī snānamahanyahani jāyate
—whoever hears this account of Prithu, son of Vena, O best of brahmins, for him a bath in the Ganga occurs, day after day.
Verse 91 (padma.2.29.91)
sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā viṣṇulokaṁ prayāti saḥ
—his soul purified of every sin, he goes to the world of Vishnu.
