Verse 1 (padma.2.32.1)

सूत उवाच- नानारत्नैः सुदीप्तांगो हाटकेनापि सर्वतः । राजमानो गिरिश्रेष्ठो यथा सूर्यः स्वरश्मिभिः

sūta uvāca- nānāratnaiḥ sudīptāṁgo hāṭakenāpi sarvataḥ rājamāno giriśreṣṭho yathā sūryaḥ svaraśmibhiḥ

Suta said: That best of mountains, Meru, blazing on every side with manifold gems and gold, shines like the sun with its own rays.

Verse 2 (padma.2.32.2)

छायामशोकां संप्राप्य शीतलां सुखदायिनीम् । ध्यायंति योगिनः सर्वे उपविष्टा दृढासने

chāyāmaśokāṁ saṁprāpya śītalāṁ sukhadāyinīm dhyāyaṁti yoginaḥ sarve upaviṣṭā dṛḍhāsane

There, having found the cool, pleasant shade of ashoka trees, all the yogis sit in firm posture and meditate.

Verse 3 (padma.2.32.3)

क्वचित्तपंति मुनयः क्वचिद्गायंति किन्नराः । संतुष्टा ऋषिगंधर्वा वीणातालकराविलाः

kvacittapaṁti munayaḥ kvacidgāyaṁti kinnarāḥ saṁtuṣṭā ṛṣigaṁdharvā vīṇātālakarāvilāḥ

Somewhere sages perform austerity, somewhere kinnaras sing; sages and gandharvas, delighted, fill the air with the sounds of vina and rhythm.

Verse 4 (padma.2.32.4)

तालमानलये लीनाः स्वरैः सप्तभिरन्वितैः । मूर्च्छनारत्निसंयुक्तैर्व्यक्तं गीतं मनोहरम्

tālamānalaye līnāḥ svaraiḥ saptabhiranvitaiḥ mūrcchanāratnisaṁyuktairvyaktaṁ gītaṁ manoharam

Absorbed in rhythm and melody, joined with the seven notes, adorned with modulation and cadence, a lovely song is ever manifest there.

Verse 5 (padma.2.32.5)

तस्मिन्वै पर्वतश्रेष्ठे चंदनच्छायसंश्रिताः । गंधर्वा गीततत्वज्ञा गीतं गायंति तत्पराः

tasminvai parvataśreṣṭhe caṁdanacchāyasaṁśritāḥ gaṁdharvā gītatatvajñā gītaṁ gāyaṁti tatparāḥ

On that best of mountains, resting in the shade of sandalwood trees, gandharvas who know the essence of song sing there, absorbed in it.

Verse 6 (padma.2.32.6)

नृत्यंति योषितस्तत्र देवानां पर्वत्तोत्तमे । पापहा पुण्यदो दिव्यः सुश्रेयसां प्रदायकः

nṛtyaṁti yoṣitastatra devānāṁ parvattottame pāpahā puṇyado divyaḥ suśreyasāṁ pradāyakaḥ

Women dance there on that best of the gods' mountains, which destroys sin, bestows merit, is divine, and grants every auspicious good fortune.

Verse 7 (padma.2.32.7)

वेदध्वनिः समधुरः श्रूयते पर्वतोत्तमे । चंदनाशोकपुन्नागैः शालैस्तालैस्तमालकैः

vedadhvaniḥ samadhuraḥ śrūyate parvatottame caṁdanāśokapunnāgaiḥ śālaistālaistamālakaiḥ

On that best of mountains, a most sweet sound of Vedic chanting is heard, amid groves of sandal, ashoka, punnaga, sala, tala, and tamala trees.

Verse 8 (padma.2.32.8)

वटैस्तु मेघसंकाशै राजते पर्वतोत्तमः । संतानकैः कल्पवृक्षै रंभापादपसंकुलैः

vaṭaistu meghasaṁkāśai rājate parvatottamaḥ saṁtānakaiḥ kalpavṛkṣai raṁbhāpādapasaṁkulaiḥ

That best of mountains shines with banyan trees resembling clouds, filled with clusters of celestial santanaka trees, wish-fulfilling kalpa trees, and plantain groves.

Verse 9 (padma.2.32.9)

नगेंद्रो भाति सर्वत्र नाकवृक्षैः सुपुष्पितैः । नानाधातुसमाकीर्णो नानारत्नचयो गिरिः

nageṁdro bhāti sarvatra nākavṛkṣaiḥ supuṣpitaiḥ nānādhātusamākīrṇo nānāratnacayo giriḥ

That lord of mountains shines everywhere with well-flowered heavenly trees; the mountain is pervaded with manifold minerals and heaped with manifold gems.

Verse 10 (padma.2.32.10)

नानाकौतुकसंयुक्तो नानामंगलसंयुतः । वेदवृंदैः सुसंजुष्टो ह्यप्सरोगणसंकुलः

nānākautukasaṁyukto nānāmaṁgalasaṁyutaḥ vedavṛṁdaiḥ susaṁjuṣṭo hyapsarogaṇasaṁkulaḥ

It is endowed with countless wonders and countless auspicious things, well attended by throngs of Vedic reciters, and thronged with hosts of apsaras.

Verse 11 (padma.2.32.11)

ऋषिभिर्मुनिभिः सिद्धैर्गंधर्वैःपरिभातिसः । गजैश्चाचलसंकाशैः सिंहनादैर्विराजते

ṛṣibhirmunibhiḥ siddhairgaṁdharvaiḥparibhātisaḥ gajaiścācalasaṁkāśaiḥ siṁhanādairvirājate

It shines all around with sages, munis, siddhas, and gandharvas; it is resplendent with elephants huge as mountains and the roaring of lions.

Verse 12 (padma.2.32.12)

शरभैर्मत्तशार्दूलैर्मृगधूर्तैरलंकृतः । वापीकूपतडागैश्च संपूर्णैर्विमलोदकैः

śarabhairmattaśārdūlairmṛgadhūrtairalaṁkṛtaḥ vāpīkūpataḍāgaiśca saṁpūrṇairvimalodakaiḥ

It is adorned with sharabhas, rutting tigers, and nimble deer; it is furnished with wells, step-wells, and pools brimming with pure water.

Verse 13 (padma.2.32.13)

हंसकारंडवाकीर्णैः सर्वत्र परिशोभते । कनकोत्पलैश्च श्वेतैश्च रक्तोत्पलैर्विराजते

haṁsakāraṁḍavākīrṇaiḥ sarvatra pariśobhate kanakotpalaiśca śvetaiśca raktotpalairvirājate

Thronged everywhere with swans and karandava birds, it shines resplendent; it is adorned with golden lotuses and with white and red lotuses.

Verse 14 (padma.2.32.14)

नदीस्रवणसंघातैर्विमलैश्चोदकैस्तथा । शालतालैश्च रूपैश्च सगजैः स्फाटिकैस्तथा

nadīsravaṇasaṁghātairvimalaiścodakaistathā śālatālaiśca rūpaiśca sagajaiḥ sphāṭikaistathā

It is furnished with streams of clear river-waters, adorned with the beauty of sala and tala trees, and with elephants and crystalline rocks.

Verse 15 (padma.2.32.15)

विस्तीर्णैः कांचनैर्दिव्यैः सूर्यवह्निसमप्रभैः । शिलातलैश्च संपूर्णः शैलराजो विराजते

vistīrṇaiḥ kāṁcanairdivyaiḥ sūryavahnisamaprabhaiḥ śilātalaiśca saṁpūrṇaḥ śailarājo virājate

That king of mountains shines resplendent, filled with vast, divine, golden rock-terraces equal in radiance to the sun and fire.

Verse 16 (padma.2.32.16)

विमानैर्देवतानां च प्रासादैः पर्वतोत्तमैः । हंसचंद्रप्रतीकाशैर्हेमदंडैरलंकृतः

vimānairdevatānāṁ ca prāsādaiḥ parvatottamaiḥ haṁsacaṁdrapratīkāśairhemadaṁḍairalaṁkṛtaḥ

It is adorned with the celestial chariots of the gods and with palaces on that best of mountains, embellished with golden pillars resembling swans and the moon.

Verse 17 (padma.2.32.17)

कलशैश्चामरैर्युक्तैः प्रासादैः परिशोभितः । नानागुणप्रमुदित देववृंदैश्च शोभितः

kalaśaiścāmarairyuktaiḥ prāsādaiḥ pariśobhitaḥ nānāguṇapramudita devavṛṁdaiśca śobhitaḥ

It is resplendent with pinnacles set with chowries and with palaces; it is graced by hosts of gods rejoicing in manifold virtues.

Verse 18 (padma.2.32.18)

देववृंदैरनेकैश्च गंधर्वैश्चारणैस्तथा । सर्वत्र राजते पुण्यो मेरुर्गिरिवरोत्तमः

devavṛṁdairanekaiśca gaṁdharvaiścāraṇaistathā sarvatra rājate puṇyo merurgirivarottamaḥ

With countless hosts of gods, with gandharvas, and with charanas too, that holy Meru, best of mountains, shines resplendent on every side.

Verse 19 (padma.2.32.19)

तस्माद्गंगामहापुण्या पुण्यतोया महानदी । प्रसूता पुण्यतीर्थाढ्या हंसपद्मैः समाकुला

tasmādgaṁgāmahāpuṇyā puṇyatoyā mahānadī prasūtā puṇyatīrthāḍhyā haṁsapadmaiḥ samākulā

From it arose the most holy Ganga, a great river of sacred waters, rich in holy tirthas, thronged with swans and lotuses.

Verse 20 (padma.2.32.20)

मुनिभिः सेव्यमाना सा ऋषिसंघैर्महानदी । एवंगुणं गिरिश्रेष्ठं पुण्यकौतुकमंगलम्

munibhiḥ sevyamānā sā ṛṣisaṁghairmahānadī evaṁguṇaṁ giriśreṣṭhaṁ puṇyakautukamaṁgalam

That great river, served by munis, is served also by hosts of rishis; thus, into that best of mountains, endowed with holy, wondrous, and auspicious qualities—

Verse 21 (padma.2.32.21)

अंगश्चात्रिसुतः पुण्यः प्रविवेश महामुनिः । गंगातीरे सुपुण्ये च एकांते चारुकंदरे

aṁgaścātrisutaḥ puṇyaḥ praviveśa mahāmuniḥ gaṁgātīre supuṇye ca ekāṁte cārukaṁdare

—Anga, the meritorious great sage, son of Atri, entered, on the most holy bank of the Ganga, into a lovely, solitary cave.

Verse 22 (padma.2.32.22)

तत्रोपविश्य मेधावी कामक्रोधविवर्जितः । सर्वेंद्रियाणि संयम्य हृषीकेशं मनोगतम्

tatropaviśya medhāvī kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ sarveṁdriyāṇi saṁyamya hṛṣīkeśaṁ manogatam

Seated there, the wise Anga, freed from desire and anger, restrained all his senses and fixed Hrishikesha within his mind.

Verse 23 (padma.2.32.23)

ध्यायमानः स धर्मात्मा कृष्णं क्लेशापहं प्रभुम् । आसने शयने याने ध्याने च मधुसूदनम्

dhyāyamānaḥ sa dharmātmā kṛṣṇaṁ kleśāpahaṁ prabhum āsane śayane yāne dhyāne ca madhusūdanam

That righteous soul, meditating on the Lord Krishna who removes affliction, kept contemplating Madhusudana constantly — while sitting, while lying, while moving, and in meditation.

Verse 24 (padma.2.32.24)

नित्यं पश्यति युक्तात्मा योगयुक्तो जितेंद्रियः । चराचरेषु जीवेषु तेषु पश्यति केशवम्

nityaṁ paśyati yuktātmā yogayukto jiteṁdriyaḥ carācareṣu jīveṣu teṣu paśyati keśavam

Ever disciplined in yoga, senses conquered, he beheld him constantly; in all beings, moving and unmoving, he saw only Keshava.

Verse 25 (padma.2.32.25)

आर्द्रेषु चैव शुष्केषु सर्वेष्वन्येषु स द्विजः । एवं वर्षशतं जातं तप्यमानस्य तस्य च

ārdreṣu caiva śuṣkeṣu sarveṣvanyeṣu sa dvijaḥ evaṁ varṣaśataṁ jātaṁ tapyamānasya tasya ca

In wet things and in dry things, and in all else besides, that twice-born saw him alone; thus, performing austerity, a hundred years passed for him.

Verse 26 (padma.2.32.26)

समालोक्य जगन्नाथश्चक्रपाणिर्द्विजोत्तमम् । बहुविघ्नान्सुघोरांश्च दर्शयत्येव नित्यशः

samālokya jagannāthaścakrapāṇirdvijottamam bahuvighnānsughorāṁśca darśayatyeva nityaśaḥ

Beholding that best of brahmins, Jagannatha, wielder of the discus, showed him, to try him, many terrible obstacles again and again.

Verse 27 (padma.2.32.27)

तेजसा तस्य देवस्य नृसिंहस्य महात्मनः । निरातंकः स धर्मात्मा दहत्यग्निरिवेंधनम्

tejasā tasya devasya nṛsiṁhasya mahātmanaḥ nirātaṁkaḥ sa dharmātmā dahatyagniriveṁdhanam

By the splendor of that great-souled Narasimha, that righteous soul, undaunted, burned away those obstacles as fire consumes fuel.

Verse 28 (padma.2.32.28)

नियमैः संयमैश्चान्यैरुपवासैर्द्विजोत्तमः । क्षीयमाणस्तु संजातो दीप्यमानः स्वतेजसा

niyamaiḥ saṁyamaiścānyairupavāsairdvijottamaḥ kṣīyamāṇastu saṁjāto dīpyamānaḥ svatejasā

Bound by vows, disciplines, and fastings, that best of brahmins, though his body wasted away, blazed forth with his own inner splendor.

Verse 29 (padma.2.32.29)

सूर्यपावकसंकाशस्त्वंग एवं प्रदृश्यते । एवं तपःसु निरतं ध्यायमानं जनार्दनम्

sūryapāvakasaṁkāśastvaṁga evaṁ pradṛśyate evaṁ tapaḥsu nirataṁ dhyāyamānaṁ janārdanam

Thus Anga came to appear radiant as the sun and fire; and beholding him thus absorbed in austerity, meditating upon Janardana—

Verse 30 (padma.2.32.30)

आविर्भूयाब्रवीद्देवो वरं वरय मानद । तं च दृष्ट्वा हृषीकेशमंगः परम निर्वृतः

āvirbhūyābravīddevo varaṁ varaya mānada taṁ ca dṛṣṭvā hṛṣīkeśamaṁgaḥ parama nirvṛtaḥ

—the Lord, appearing, said: 'O giver of honor, choose a boon.' Beholding Hrishikesha, Anga became supremely joyful,

Verse 31 (padma.2.32.31)

तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा वासुदेवं प्रसन्नधीः

tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā vāsudevaṁ prasannadhīḥ

and, bowing low, with a heart made glad, began to praise Vasudeva.

Verse 32 (padma.2.32.32)

अंग उवाच- त्वं गतिः सर्वभूतानां भूतभावन पावन । भूतात्मा सर्वभूतेश नमस्तुभ्यं गुणात्मने

aṁga uvāca- tvaṁ gatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ bhūtabhāvana pāvana bhūtātmā sarvabhūteśa namastubhyaṁ guṇātmane

Anga said: You are the refuge of all beings, O origin and purifier of beings; O soul of all beings, lord of all beings, salutations to you, O soul of all qualities.

Verse 33 (padma.2.32.33)

गुणरूपाय गुह्याय गुणातीताय ते नमः । गुणाय गुणकर्त्रे च गुणाढ्याय गुणात्मने

guṇarūpāya guhyāya guṇātītāya te namaḥ guṇāya guṇakartre ca guṇāḍhyāya guṇātmane

Salutations to you of the form of the qualities, the mystery, beyond the qualities; salutations to the very essence of the qualities, the maker of qualities, rich in qualities, the soul of qualities.

Verse 34 (padma.2.32.34)

भवाय भवकर्त्रे च भक्तानां भवहारिणे । भवोद्भवाय गुह्याय नमो भवविनाशिने

bhavāya bhavakartre ca bhaktānāṁ bhavahāriṇe bhavodbhavāya guhyāya namo bhavavināśine

Salutations to Existence and to the maker of Existence, to the remover of the worldly bondage of devotees; salutations to the very source of existence, the mystery, the destroyer of existence.

Verse 35 (padma.2.32.35)

यज्ञाय यज्ञरूपाय यज्ञेशाय नमोनमः । यज्ञकर्मप्रसंगाय नमः शंखधराय च

yajñāya yajñarūpāya yajñeśāya namonamaḥ yajñakarmaprasaṁgāya namaḥ śaṁkhadharāya ca

Salutations again and again to Sacrifice, to the form of sacrifice, to the lord of sacrifice; salutations to you engaged in sacrificial rites, the bearer of the conch.

Verse 36 (padma.2.32.36)

नमोनमो हिरण्याय नमो रथांगधारिणे । सत्याय सत्यभावाय सर्वसत्यमयाय च

namonamo hiraṇyāya namo rathāṁgadhāriṇe satyāya satyabhāvāya sarvasatyamayāya ca

Salutations again and again to the golden one, salutations to the wielder of the discus; salutations to Truth, to the nature of truth, to you who are wholly made of truth.

Verse 37 (padma.2.32.37)

धर्माय धर्मकर्त्रे च सर्वकर्त्रे च ते नमः । धर्मांगाय सुवीराय धर्माधाराय ते नमः

dharmāya dharmakartre ca sarvakartre ca te namaḥ dharmāṁgāya suvīrāya dharmādhārāya te namaḥ

Salutations to Dharma, to the maker of Dharma, and to the maker of all; salutations to you who are the very limb of Dharma, the great hero, the support of Dharma.

Verse 38 (padma.2.32.38)

नमः पुण्याय पुत्राय ह्यपुत्राय महात्मने । मायामोहविनाशाय सर्वमायाकराय ते

namaḥ puṇyāya putrāya hyaputrāya mahātmane māyāmohavināśāya sarvamāyākarāya te

Salutations to the meritorious one, to the son, and to the sonless great soul; salutations to you who destroy the delusion of maya and yet create all maya.

Verse 39 (padma.2.32.39)

मायाधराय मूर्ताय त्वमूर्ताय नमोनमः । सर्वमूर्तिधरायैव शंकराय नमोनमः

māyādharāya mūrtāya tvamūrtāya namonamaḥ sarvamūrtidharāyaiva śaṁkarāya namonamaḥ

Salutations again and again to the bearer of maya, the formed and the formless; salutations again and again to Shankara who bears every form.

Verse 40 (padma.2.32.40)

ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मरूपाय परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणे । नमस्ते सर्वधाम्ने च नमो धामधराय च

brahmaṇe brahmarūpāya parabrahmasvarūpiṇe namaste sarvadhāmne ca namo dhāmadharāya ca

Salutations to Brahman, to the form of Brahman, to the very nature of the supreme Brahman; salutations to you, the abode of all abodes, and salutations to the bearer of that abode.

Verse 41 (padma.2.32.41)

श्रीमते श्रीनिवासाय श्रीधराय नमोनमः । क्षीरसागरवासाय चामृताय च ते नमः

śrīmate śrīnivāsāya śrīdharāya namonamaḥ kṣīrasāgaravāsāya cāmṛtāya ca te namaḥ

Salutations again and again to the glorious one, the abode of Shri, the bearer of Shri; salutations to you who dwell in the ocean of milk, who are the very form of nectar.

Verse 42 (padma.2.32.42)

महौषधाय घोराय महाप्रज्ञापराय च । अक्रूराय प्रमेध्याय मेध्यानां पतये नमः

mahauṣadhāya ghorāya mahāprajñāparāya ca akrūrāya pramedhyāya medhyānāṁ pataye namaḥ

Salutations to the great remedy, the terrible one, the great wise one; salutations to the guileless one, the pure one, the lord of the pure.

Verse 43 (padma.2.32.43)

अनंताय ह्यशेषाय चानघाय नमोनमः । आकाशस्य प्रकाशाय पक्षिरूपाय ते नमः

anaṁtāya hyaśeṣāya cānaghāya namonamaḥ ākāśasya prakāśāya pakṣirūpāya te namaḥ

Salutations again and again to the endless, the entire, the sinless one; salutations to you, the light of the sky, of bird-like form.

Verse 44 (padma.2.32.44)

हुताय हुतभोक्त्रे च हवीरूपाय ते नमः । बुद्धाय बुधरूपाय सदाबुद्धाय ते नमः

hutāya hutabhoktre ca havīrūpāya te namaḥ buddhāya budharūpāya sadābuddhāya te namaḥ

Salutations to the offering, to the enjoyer of the offering, to you who are the very form of the oblation; salutations to the enlightened, to wisdom's form, to the ever-wise one.

Verse 45 (padma.2.32.45)

नमो हव्यायकव्याय स्वधाकाराय ते नमः । स्वाहाकाराय शुद्धाय ह्यव्यक्ताय महात्मने

namo havyāyakavyāya svadhākārāya te namaḥ svāhākārāya śuddhāya hyavyaktāya mahātmane

Salutations to the offerings for gods and ancestors, to you who are the form of 'svadha'; salutations to the form of 'svaha', the pure, the unmanifest great soul.

Verse 46 (padma.2.32.46)

व्यासाय वासवायैव वसुरूपाय ते नमः । वासुदेवाय विश्वाय वह्निरूपाय ते नमः । हरये केवलायैव वामनाय नमोनमः

vyāsāya vāsavāyaiva vasurūpāya te namaḥ vāsudevāya viśvāya vahnirūpāya te namaḥ haraye kevalāyaiva vāmanāya namonamaḥ

Salutations to Vyasa, to Vasava, to you who are the form of the Vasus; salutations to Vasudeva, the form of the universe, the form of fire; salutations again and again to the sole Hari, to Vamana.

Verse 47 (padma.2.32.47)

नमो नृसिंहदेवाय सत्वपालाय ते नमः

namo nṛsiṁhadevāya satvapālāya te namaḥ

Salutations to the god Narasimha, protector of righteousness.

Verse 48 (padma.2.32.48)

नमो गोविंदगोपाय नम एकाक्षराय च । नमः सर्वाक्षरायैव हंसरूपाय ते नमः

namo goviṁdagopāya nama ekākṣarāya ca namaḥ sarvākṣarāyaiva haṁsarūpāya te namaḥ

Salutations to Govinda the cowherd, salutations to the single syllable Om; salutations to all syllables, to you of swan-like form.

Verse 49 (padma.2.32.49)

त्रितत्त्वाय नमस्तुभ्यं पंचतत्त्वाय ते नमः । पंचविंशतितत्त्वाय तत्त्वाधाराय वै नमः

tritattvāya namastubhyaṁ paṁcatattvāya te namaḥ paṁcaviṁśatitattvāya tattvādhārāya vai namaḥ

Salutations to the three principles, salutations to the five principles; salutations to the twenty-five principles, to the support of all principles.

Verse 50 (padma.2.32.50)

कृष्णाय कृष्णरूपाय लक्ष्मीनाथाय ते नमः । नमः पद्मपलाशाय आनंदाय पराय च

kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇarūpāya lakṣmīnāthāya te namaḥ namaḥ padmapalāśāya ānaṁdāya parāya ca

Salutations to Krishna, to Krishna's form, to the Lord of Lakshmi; salutations to you with lotus-petal eyes, of the form of bliss, the supreme one.

Verse 51 (padma.2.32.51)

नमो विश्वंभरायैव पापनाशाय वै नमः । नमः पुण्यसुपुण्याय सत्यधर्माय ते नमः

namo viśvaṁbharāyaiva pāpanāśāya vai namaḥ namaḥ puṇyasupuṇyāya satyadharmāya te namaḥ

Salutations to you, sustainer of the universe, salutations to the destroyer of sin; salutations to the meritorious and most holy, to true Dharma.

Verse 52 (padma.2.32.52)

नमोनमः शाश्वतअव्ययाय नमोनमः संघ नभोमयाय । श्रीपद्मनाभाय महेश्वराय नमामि ते केशवपादपद्मम्

namonamaḥ śāśvataavyayāya namonamaḥ saṁgha nabhomayāya śrīpadmanābhāya maheśvarāya namāmi te keśavapādapadmam

Salutations again and again to the eternal, imperishable one, salutations again and again to you whose form fills the sky; O Shri Padmanabha, great Lord, I bow to your lotus feet, Keshava.

Verse 53 (padma.2.32.53)

आनंदकंद कमलाप्रिय वासुदेव सर्वेश ईश मधुसूदन देहि दास्यम् । पादौ नमामि तव केशव जन्मजन्म कृपां कुरुष्व मम शांतिद शंखपाणे

ānaṁdakaṁda kamalāpriya vāsudeva sarveśa īśa madhusūdana dehi dāsyam pādau namāmi tava keśava janmajanma kṛpāṁ kuruṣva mama śāṁtida śaṁkhapāṇe

O root of bliss, beloved of Lakshmi, O Vasudeva, Lord of all, O Madhusudana, grant me your servitude; O Keshava, birth after birth I bow to your feet — show mercy on me, O bearer of the conch, giver of peace.

Verse 54 (padma.2.32.54)

संसारदारुणहुताशनतापदग्धं पुत्रादिबंधुमरणैर्बहुशोकतापैः । ज्ञानांबुदेन मम प्लावय पद्मनाभ दीनस्य मच्छरणरूपभवस्व नाथ

saṁsāradāruṇahutāśanatāpadagdhaṁ putrādibaṁdhumaraṇairbahuśokatāpaiḥ jñānāṁbudena mama plāvaya padmanābha dīnasya maccharaṇarūpabhavasva nātha

Burnt by the fierce fire of worldly existence and by the many griefs of the deaths of sons and kin, drench me, the wretched one, with the cloud of your knowledge, O Padmanabha, and become the refuge, O Lord.

Verse 55 (padma.2.32.55)

एवं स्तोत्रं समाकर्ण्य त्वंगस्यापि महात्मनः । दर्शयित्वा स्वकं रूपं घनश्यामं महौजसम्

evaṁ stotraṁ samākarṇya tvaṁgasyāpi mahātmanaḥ darśayitvā svakaṁ rūpaṁ ghanaśyāmaṁ mahaujasam

Having thus heard the hymn of the great-souled Anga, revealing his own form, dark as a rain-cloud, of great splendor—

Verse 56 (padma.2.32.56)

शंखचक्रगदापाणिं पद्महस्तं महाप्रभुम् । वैनतेयसमारूढमात्मरूपं प्रदर्शितम्

śaṁkhacakragadāpāṇiṁ padmahastaṁ mahāprabhum vainateyasamārūḍhamātmarūpaṁ pradarśitam

—holding conch, discus, and mace, lotus in hand, the great Lord, mounted upon Garuda, displayed his own form.

Verse 57 (padma.2.32.57)

सर्वाभरणशोभांगं हारकंकणकुंडलैः । राजमानं परं दिव्यं निर्मलं वनमालया

sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgaṁ hārakaṁkaṇakuṁḍalaiḥ rājamānaṁ paraṁ divyaṁ nirmalaṁ vanamālayā

His whole form adorned with necklace, bracelets, and earrings — supremely divine, spotless, resplendent with a garland of forest flowers—

अंगस्याग्रे हृषीकेशः शोभमान महत्प्रभः । श्रीवत्सांकेन पुण्येन कौस्तुभेन जनार्दनः

aṁgasyāgre hṛṣīkeśaḥ śobhamāna mahatprabhaḥ śrīvatsāṁkena puṇyena kaustubhena janārdanaḥ

Before Anga stood Hrishikesha, of great splendor, marked with the holy sign of Shrivatsa and adorned with the Kaustubha jewel — Janardana,

Verse 59 (padma.2.32.59)

दर्शयित्वा स्वकं देहं सर्वदेवमयो हरिः । स उवाच महात्मानं तमंगमृषिसत्तमम्

darśayitvā svakaṁ dehaṁ sarvadevamayo hariḥ sa uvāca mahātmānaṁ tamaṁgamṛṣisattamam

revealing his own being, Hari who is the very form of all the gods, spoke thus to that great-souled Anga, foremost of sages:

Verse 60 (padma.2.32.60)

भो भो विप्र महाभाग श्रूयतां वचनं शुभम् । मेघगंभीरघोषेण समाभाष्य द्विजोत्तमम्

bho bho vipra mahābhāga śrūyatāṁ vacanaṁ śubham meghagaṁbhīraghoṣeṇa samābhāṣya dvijottamam

'O greatly fortunate brahmin, hear my auspicious word' — thus, in a voice deep as a cloud, addressing that best of brahmins,

तपसानेन तुष्टोस्मि वरं वरय शोभनम् । तुष्यमाणं हृषीकेशं तं दृष्ट्वा कमलापतिम्

tapasānena tuṣṭosmi varaṁ varaya śobhanam tuṣyamāṇaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā kamalāpatim

'—By this austerity I am well pleased; choose an excellent boon.' Seeing Hrishikesha thus pleased, beholding that Lord of Lakshmi,

दीप्यमानं विराजंतं विश्वरूपं जनेश्वरम् । पादांबुजद्वयं तस्य प्रणम्य च पुनःपुनः

dīpyamānaṁ virājaṁtaṁ viśvarūpaṁ janeśvaram pādāṁbujadvayaṁ tasya praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ

radiant, of universal form, the Lord of all beings, having bowed again and again to his two lotus feet,

Verse 63 (padma.2.32.63)

हर्षेण महताविष्टस्तमुवाच जनार्दनम् । दासोहं तव देवेश शंखचक्रगदाधर

harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭastamuvāca janārdanam dāsohaṁ tava deveśa śaṁkhacakragadādhara

overcome with great joy, he said to Janardana: 'O Lord of the gods, wielder of conch, discus, and mace, I am your servant.

Verse 64 (padma.2.32.64)

वरं मे दातुकामोसि देहि त्वं वंशजं सुतम् । दिवि शक्रो यथाऽभाति सर्वतेजः समन्वितः

varaṁ me dātukāmosi dehi tvaṁ vaṁśajaṁ sutam divi śakro yathā'bhāti sarvatejaḥ samanvitaḥ

'Since you are ready to grant me a boon, give me a son of my own lineage — like Indra, who shines in heaven endowed with all splendor —

तादृशं देहि मे पुत्रं सर्वलोकस्य रक्षकम् । सर्वदेवप्रियं देव ब्रह्मण्यं धर्मपंडितम्

tādṛśaṁ dehi me putraṁ sarvalokasya rakṣakam sarvadevapriyaṁ deva brahmaṇyaṁ dharmapaṁḍitam

'give me such a son, O god, the protector of all worlds, beloved of all the gods, devoted to brahmins, and skilled in dharma.

Verse 66 (padma.2.32.66)

दातारं ज्ञानसंपन्नं धर्मतेजः समन्वितम् । त्रैलोक्यरक्षकं कृष्ण सत्यधर्मानुपालकम्

dātāraṁ jñānasaṁpannaṁ dharmatejaḥ samanvitam trailokyarakṣakaṁ kṛṣṇa satyadharmānupālakam

'Let him be generous, endowed with knowledge, filled with the splendor of dharma; O Krishna, protector of the three worlds, upholder of true dharma;

Verse 67 (padma.2.32.67)

यज्वनामुत्तमं चैकं शूरं त्रैलोक्यभूषणम् । ब्रह्मण्यं वेदविद्वांसं सत्यसंधं जितेंद्रियम्

yajvanāmuttamaṁ caikaṁ śūraṁ trailokyabhūṣaṇam brahmaṇyaṁ vedavidvāṁsaṁ satyasaṁdhaṁ jiteṁdriyam

'foremost among the sacrificers, unmatched, heroic, the ornament of the three worlds; devoted to brahmins, learned in the Vedas, true to his word, master of his senses.

Verse 68 (padma.2.32.68)

अजितं सर्वजेतारं विष्णुं तेजःसमप्रभम् । वैष्णवं पुण्यकर्तारं पुण्यजं पुण्यलक्षणम्

ajitaṁ sarvajetāraṁ viṣṇuṁ tejaḥsamaprabham vaiṣṇavaṁ puṇyakartāraṁ puṇyajaṁ puṇyalakṣaṇam

'Unconquered, conqueror of all, resplendent like Vishnu; devoted to Vishnu, doer of holy deeds, born of merit, and marked with the signs of merit.

Verse 69 (padma.2.32.69)

शांतं तु तपसोपेतं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् । वेदज्ञं योगिनां श्रेष्ठं भवतो गुणसंनिभम्

śāṁtaṁ tu tapasopetaṁ sarvaśāstraviśāradam vedajñaṁ yogināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ bhavato guṇasaṁnibham

'Peaceful, yet endowed with austerity, skilled in all the scriptures; knower of the Vedas, foremost among yogis, resembling your very own qualities.

Verse 70 (padma.2.32.70)

ईदृशं देहि मे पुत्रं दातुकामो यदा वरम् । श्रीवासुदेव उवाच- एभिर्गुणैः समोपेतस्तव पुत्रो भविष्यति

īdṛśaṁ dehi me putraṁ dātukāmo yadā varam śrīvāsudeva uvāca- ebhirguṇaiḥ samopetastava putro bhaviṣyati

'Give me such a son' — and as he wished to grant this boon, Shri Vasudeva said: 'Endowed with these very qualities shall your son be.

Verse 71 (padma.2.32.71)

अत्रिवंशस्य वै धर्ता विश्वस्यास्य महामते । तेजसा यशसा पुण्यैः पितरं चोद्धरिष्यति

atrivaṁśasya vai dhartā viśvasyāsya mahāmate tejasā yaśasā puṇyaiḥ pitaraṁ coddhariṣyati

'He shall be the sustainer of Atri's lineage, O great-minded one, and indeed of this whole world; by splendor, by fame, and by merit he shall uplift his father.

Verse 72 (padma.2.32.72)

उद्धरिष्यति यः सत्यैः पितरं च पितामहम् । भवान्यास्यति मे स्थानं तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्

uddhariṣyati yaḥ satyaiḥ pitaraṁ ca pitāmaham bhavānyāsyati me sthānaṁ tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam

'He who, by his truthful deeds, shall uplift both father and grandfather — you shall attain that station of mine, the supreme abode of Vishnu.'

Verse 73 (padma.2.32.73)

इत्युक्त्वा देवदेवेशस्तमंगं प्रति स द्विज । कस्यचित्पुण्यवीर्यस्य पुण्यां कन्यां विवाहय

ityuktvā devadeveśastamaṁgaṁ prati sa dvija kasyacitpuṇyavīryasya puṇyāṁ kanyāṁ vivāhaya

Having said this, the Lord of Lords further said to that Anga, O twice-born: 'Marry the holy daughter of some meritorious hero,

Verse 74 (padma.2.32.74)

तस्यामुत्पादय सुतं शुभं पुण्यावह प्रियम् । स भविष्यति धर्मात्मा मत्प्रसादान्महामते

tasyāmutpādaya sutaṁ śubhaṁ puṇyāvaha priyam sa bhaviṣyati dharmātmā matprasādānmahāmate

'and upon her beget an auspicious, meritorious, beloved son; by my grace, O great-minded one, he shall become a righteous soul,

सर्वज्ञः सर्ववेत्ता च यादृशो वांछितस्त्वया । एवं वरं ततो दत्वा अंतर्धानं गतो हरिः

sarvajñaḥ sarvavettā ca yādṛśo vāṁchitastvayā evaṁ varaṁ tato datvā aṁtardhānaṁ gato hariḥ

'all-knowing, all-perceiving, exactly as you have desired.' Having thus granted the boon, Hari then vanished from that place.
