The brahmin-wife said: One day, O blessed one, she went to a fine mountain, and beheld a lovely forest adorned with groves of plantain.

With sala, tala and tamala trees, with tall coconut palms, with areca-nut, citron, orange, and lovely jambu trees —
Verse 3 (padma.2.49.3)

—with campaka, patala, and sacred flowering kutaja and banyan trees, adorned further with ashoka and bakula, and with trees of every kind.
Verse 4 (padma.2.49.4)

There was a lake, auspicious on every side, filled with sacred water, with lotuses in bloom and other fragrant, golden water-lilies.
Verse 6 (padma.2.49.6)
śvetotpalairvibhāsaṁtaṁ raktotpalasupuṣpitaiḥ nīlotpalaiśca kahlārairhaṁsaiśca jalakukkuṭaiḥ
Shining with white lotuses and finely blossomed red lotuses, with blue lotuses and kahlara flowers, with swans and water-fowl.
Verse 7 (padma.2.49.7)

With other water-birds too, filled with minerals of every kind — that lake, bright all around, teemed with flocks of birds of every sort.
Verse 8 (padma.2.49.8)
kokilānāṁ rutaiḥ puṇyaiḥ susvaraiḥ pariśobhitaḥ madhurāṇāṁ tathā śabdaiḥ sarvatra madhurāyate
It was adorned by the sweet, blessed calls of cuckoos, and everywhere resounded sweetly with other melodious sounds.
Verse 9 (padma.2.49.9)
ṣaṭpadānāṁ sunādena sarvatra pariśobhate evaṁvidhaṁ giriṁ ramyaṁ tadeva vanamuttamam
It shone everywhere with the fine hum of bees. Such was that lovely mountain, and that very forest was excellent.
Verse 10 (padma.2.49.10)
taḍāgaṁ sarvatobhadraṁ dadṛśe nṛpanaṁdinī vaidarbhī krīḍamānā sā sakhībhiḥ sahitā tadā
That princess, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha, beheld the auspicious lake, sporting there together with her friends.
Verse 11 (padma.2.49.11)
samālokya vanaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvatra kusumākulam cāpalyena prabhāveṇa strībhāvena ca līlayā
Beholding the sacred forest, filled everywhere with blossoms, with the playfulness, spirit, and grace natural to womanhood —
Verse 12 (padma.2.49.12)
padmāvatī sarastīre sakhībhiḥ sahitā tadā jalakrīḍā samālīnā hasate gāyate punaḥ
Padmavati, there on the bank of the lake, together with her friends, engrossed in water-sport, laughed and sang again and again.
Verse 13 (padma.2.49.13)
ramamāṇā ca sā tasmiṁstasminsarasi bhāminī evaṁ vipra tadā sā tu sukhena parivartayet
That lovely woman sported thus in that very lake; thus, O brahmin, she passed her time happily there.
Verse 14 (padma.2.49.14)
viṣṇuruvāca- gobhilo nāma vai daityo bhṛtyo vaiśravaṇasya ca divyenāpi vimānena sarvabhogapariplutaḥ
Vishnu said: There was a demon named Gobhila, a servant of Vaishravana, who, in a divine chariot, was steeped in every enjoyment.
Verse 15 (padma.2.49.15)
yāti cākāśamārgeṇa gobhilo daityasattamaḥ tena dṛṣṭā viśālākṣī vaidarbhī nirbhayā tadā
That mightiest of demons, Gobhila, was traveling through the pathway of the sky; and by him was seen the wide-eyed princess of Vidarbha, fearless there.
Verse 16 (padma.2.49.16)
sarvayoṣidvarā sā hi ugrasenasya vai priyā rūpeṇāpratimā loke sarvāṁgeṣu virājate
She, the finest of all women, was indeed the beloved of Ugrasena; of matchless beauty in the world, she shone resplendent in every limb.
Verse 17 (padma.2.49.17)
ratirvai manmathasyāpi kiṁ vāpīyaṁ haripriyā kiṁ vāpi pārvatī devī śacī kiṁ vā bhaviṣyati
'Is she Rati, the beloved of Manmatha? Or is she Hari's own beloved? Or could she be the goddess Parvati, or perhaps Shachi?'
Verse 18 (padma.2.49.18)
yādṛśī dṛśyate ceyaṁ nārīṇāṁ pravarottamā anyāpi īdṛśī nāsti dvitīyā kṣitimaṁḍale
'As she appears, so is she the very finest among women; there is no other like her, no second, in this whole circle of the earth.'
Verse 19 (padma.2.49.19)
nakṣatreṣu yathā caṁdraḥ saṁpūrṇo bhāti śobhanaḥ guṇarūpakalābhistu tathā bhāti varānanā
'As the full moon shines resplendent among the stars, so this fair-faced one shines with her virtues, beauty, and grace.'
Verse 20 (padma.2.49.20)
puṣkareṣu yathā haṁsastatheyaṁ cāruhāsinī aho rūpamahobhāva asyāstu paridṛśyate
'As a swan amid lotus-pools, so is this lovely-smiling one. Ah, what beauty, what majesty is seen in her!'
Verse 21 (padma.2.49.21)
kā kasya śobhanā bālā cāruvṛttapayodharā vyamṛśadgobhilo daityaḥ padmāvatīṁ varānanām
'Whose lovely maiden is this, with her fine, full form?' — thus the demon Gobhila pondered over the fair-faced Padmavati.
Verse 22 (padma.2.49.22)
ciṁtayitvā kṣaṇaṁ vipra kā kasyāpi bhaviṣyati jñānena mahatā jñātvā vaidarbhīti na saṁśayaḥ
Pondering a moment, O brahmin, 'whose might she be,' by his great knowledge he understood, without doubt, that she was the princess of Vidarbha.
Verse 23 (padma.2.49.23)
dayitā ugrasenasya pativrataparāyaṇā ātmabalena tiṣṭhaṁtī duṣprāpyā puruṣairapi
'She is the beloved of Ugrasena, devoted wholly to her vow of chastity; standing firm by her own strength, unattainable even by other men.'
Verse 24 (padma.2.49.24)
ugraseno mahāmūrkhaḥ preṣitā yena vai varā piturgehamiyaṁ bālā sa tu bhāgyena varjitaḥ
'That great fool Ugrasena, by whom this excellent maiden was sent away to her father's house — he indeed is bereft of good fortune.'
Verse 25 (padma.2.49.25)
anayā vinā sa jīvecca kathaṁ kūṭamatiḥ sadā kiṁ vā napuṁsako rājā enāṁ yo hi parityajet
'How can that dull-witted one live always without her? Or is that king perhaps impotent, that he would let her go thus?'
Verse 26 (padma.2.49.26)
tāṁ dṛṣṭvā sa tu kāmātmā saṁjātastatkṣaṇādapi iyaṁ pativratā bālā duṣprāpyā puruṣairapi
Seeing her, he became at once overcome with desire; yet he knew: 'This chaste maiden is unattainable even by other men.'
Verse 27 (padma.2.49.27)
kathaṁ bhokṣyāmyahaṁ gatvā kāmo māmati pīḍayet abhuktvaināṁ yadā yāsye tatsyānmṛtyurmamaiva hi
'How, going there, shall I possess her? My desire torments me exceedingly. If I go without possessing her, that itself would be my very death.'
Verse 28 (padma.2.49.28)
adyaiva hi na saṁdeho yataḥ kāmo mahābalaḥ iti ciṁtāparo bhūtvā gobhilo manasaikṣata
'This very day, without doubt — for desire is exceedingly powerful.' Thus lost in thought, Gobhila pondered within his mind.
Verse 29 (padma.2.49.29)
kṛtvā māyāmayaṁ rūpamugrasenasya bhūpateḥ yādṛśastūgrasenaśca sāṁgopāṁgo mahānṛpaḥ
Assuming, by illusion, the form of King Ugrasena — exactly as that great king Ugrasena was, in every limb and feature —
Verse 30 (padma.2.49.30)
gobhilastādṛśo bhūtvā gatyā ca svarabhāṣayā yathāvastro yathāveśo vayasā ca tathā punaḥ
—Gobhila became exactly so, in gait, in voice and speech, in dress and attire, and in age likewise.
Verse 31 (padma.2.49.31)
divyamālyāṁbaradharo divyagaṁdhānulepanaḥ sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgo yādṛśo māthureśvaraḥ
Wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrance, his limbs adorned with every ornament — just as the lord of Mathura was.
Verse 32 (padma.2.49.32)
bhūtvātha tādṛśo daitya ugrasenamayastadā māyayā parayā yukto rūpalāvaṇyasaṁpadā
Thus that demon, having become exactly so, transformed wholly into Ugrasena, endowed by his supreme illusion with that wealth of beauty and grace.
Verse 33 (padma.2.49.33)
parvatāgre aśokasyacchāyāmāśritya saṁsthitaḥ śilātalastho duṣṭātmā vīṇādaṁḍena vīrakaḥ
He took his place upon the mountaintop, in the shade of an ashoka tree, that wicked-souled one, seated upon a rock, with a lute in hand like some minstrel.
Verse 34 (padma.2.49.34)
susvaraṁ gāyamānastu gītaṁ viśvapramohanam tālamānakriyopetaṁ saptasvaravibhūṣitam
He began singing a song, sweet-toned, enchanting to the whole world, adorned with proper rhythm and measure, embellished with the seven notes.
Verse 35 (padma.2.49.35)
gītaṁ gāyati duṣṭātmā tasyā rūpeṇa mohitaḥ parvatāgre sthito vipra harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ
That wicked soul, enchanted by her beauty, sang his song there, standing on the mountaintop, O brahmin, filled with great delight.
Verse 36 (padma.2.49.36)
sakhīmadhyagatā sā tu padmāvatī varānanā śuśruve susvaraṁ gītaṁ tālamānalayānvitam
Padmavati, that fair-faced one, seated amid her friends, heard that sweet song, filled with proper rhythm, measure, and tempo.
Verse 37 (padma.2.49.37)
ko'yaṁ gāyati dharmātmā mahatsaukhyapradāyakam gītaṁ hi satkriyopetaṁ sarvabhāvasamanvitam
'Who is this righteous soul who sings such a song, bestowing great joy, so full of fine craft, so imbued with every feeling?'
Verse 38 (padma.2.49.38)
sakhībhiḥ sahitā gatvā autsukyena nṛpātmajā aśokacchāyāmāśritya vimale suśilātale
The princess, filled with curiosity, went there together with her friends, to where, in the shade of the ashoka, upon the clean fine rock —
Verse 39 (padma.2.49.39)
dadarśa bhūpaveṣeṇa gobhilaṁ dānavādhamam puṣpamālāṁbaradharaṁ divyagaṁdhānulepanam
—she saw the vile demon Gobhila, in the guise of the king, wearing garlands of flowers and fine garments, anointed with divine fragrance.
Verse 40 (padma.2.49.40)
sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgaṁ padmāvatī pativratā mathureśaḥ samāyātaḥ kadā dharmaparāyaṇaḥ
Padmavati, the devoted wife, saw him with limbs adorned by every ornament, and thought: 'When has the righteous lord of Mathura arrived here?'
Verse 41 (padma.2.49.41)
mama nātho mahātmā vai rājyaṁ tyaktvā pradūrataḥ yāvaddhi ciṁtayetsā ca tāvatpāpena tena sā
'My great-souled lord — has he left his kingdom so far behind to come here?' Even as she pondered this, she was addressed by that sinful one —
Verse 42 (padma.2.49.42)
samāhūtā turībhūya ehi tvaṁ hi priye mama cakitāśaṁkitāsācakathaṁbharttāsamāgataḥ
—called out to her at once: 'Come, my beloved!' Startled and doubtful, she thought: 'How has my husband come here?'
Verse 43 (padma.2.49.43)
lajjitā duḥkhitā jātā adhaḥkṛtvā tato mukham ahaṁ pāpā durācārā niḥśaṁkā parivartitā
She grew abashed and distressed, casting down her face, thinking: 'I, sinful and ill-behaved, have been wandering about here so carelessly.'
Verse 44 (padma.2.49.44)
kopamevaṁ mahābhāgaḥ kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ yāvaddhi ciṁtayetsā ca tāvattenāpi pāpinā
'That blessed lord will surely be angry with me, without doubt.' Even as she thought thus, that sinful one —
Verse 45 (padma.2.49.45)
samāhūtā turībhūya ehyehi tvaṁ mama priye tvayā vinā kṛto devi prāṇāndhartuṁ varānane
—called to her again at once: 'Come, come, my beloved! Without you, O goddess, O fair one, I could scarcely bear to hold onto my very life.'
Verse 46 (padma.2.49.46)
na hi śaknomyahaṁ kāṁte jīvitaṁ priyameva ca tava snehena lubdhosmi tvāṁ tyaktvā notsahe bhṛśam
'I cannot bear my life or anything dear to me, my love. I am overcome with longing for your love; I could not bring myself to be without you any longer.'
Verse 47 (padma.2.49.47)
brāhmaṇyuvāca- evamuktā gatāpaśyatsumukhaṁ lajjayānvitā samāliṁgya tato daityaḥ satīṁ padmāvatīṁ tadā
The brahmin-wife said: Thus addressed, she went to him, gazing at his fair face, overcome with shyness; and then the demon embraced the chaste Padmavati.
Verse 48 (padma.2.49.48)
ekāṁtaṁ tu samānītā subhuktā icchayā tataḥ daityena gobhilenāpi satyaketoḥ sutā tadā
Led away to a secluded place, the daughter of Satyaketu was then, by her own consent, embraced by the demon Gobhila.
Verse 49 (padma.2.49.49)
sukalovāca- muṣkasthānesya saṁketaṁ nāviṁdata varānanā svavastraṁ sā parigṛhya śaṁkitā duḥkhitā hyabhūt
Sukala said: But that fair one did not find upon him the mark she knew in that intimate place; gathering her garments about her, she grew suspicious and distressed.
Verse 50 (padma.2.49.50)
sā sakrodhā vacaḥ prāha gobhilaṁ dānavādhamam kastvaṁ pāpasamācāro nirghṛṇo dānavākṛtiḥ
Filled with rage, she spoke thus to the vile demon Gobhila: 'Who are you, of such sinful conduct, merciless one in a demon's true form?'
Verse 51 (padma.2.49.51)
śaptukāmā samudyuktā duḥkhenākulitekṣaṇā vepamānā tadā rājanduḥkhabhāreṇa pīḍitā
Resolved to curse him, her eyes clouded with grief, trembling, O king, weighed down by the burden of her sorrow —
Verse 52 (padma.2.49.52)
mama kāṁtacchalenaiva tvayāgatya durātmavan nāśitaṁ dharmamevāgryaṁ pātivratyamanuttamam
'—O wicked-souled one, coming here by deceiving me in my husband's guise, you have destroyed my very foremost dharma, my unsurpassed chastity.'
Verse 53 (padma.2.49.53)
susvaraṁ ruditaṁ kṛtvā mama janma tvayā hṛtam paśya me balamatraiva śāpaṁ dāsye sudāruṇam
Weeping bitterly, she said: 'You have stolen the very meaning of my birth. Behold my power — here and now I shall give you a most terrible curse.'
Verse 54 (padma.2.49.54)
evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇā taṁ śaptukāmā tu gobhilam
Thus speaking, resolved to curse Gobhila —
