Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 5
Somasharma's Ascent, Prahlada's Rebirth, and the Consecration of Indra
Verse 1 (padma.2.5.1)
śivaśarmovāca- tapasā damaśaucābhyāṁguruśuśrūṣayā tathā bhaktyābhāvena tuṣṭosmi tavādya casuputraka
Shivasharma said: By your austerity, self-control, and purity, by your service to your elders, and by your devotion, I am well pleased with you today, my good son.
Verse 2 (padma.2.5.2)
tyajāmi vaikṛtaṁ rūpaṁ mattaḥ sukhamavāpnuhi evamukvā sutaṁ vipro darśayāmāsa tāṁ tanum
'I now cast off this contrived form; obtain happiness from me.' Having said this to his son, the brahmin showed him his true form.
Verse 3 (padma.2.5.3)
yathāpūrvaṁ sthitau tau tu tathā sa dṛṣṭavāngurū dīptimaṁtau mahātmānau sūryabiṁbopamāvubhau
He saw his two elders standing there as before — radiant, great souls, both like the very orb of the sun.
Verse 4 (padma.2.5.4)
nanāma pādau sadbhaktyā ubhayostu mahātmanoḥ tataḥ sutaṁ samāmaṁtrya harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ
He bowed with true devotion at the feet of those two great souls. Then, calling his son, filled with great joy—
Verse 5 (padma.2.5.5)
viṣṇoḥ prasādāddharmātmā bhāryayā saha keśavam jagāma nijapuṇyaiśca yogābhyāsena sattamaḥ
—by Vishnu's grace, that righteous, worthy one, together with his wife, went to Keshava through his own merits and the practice of yoga.
Verse 6 (padma.2.5.6)
praviṣṭo vaiṣṇavaṁ dhāma sa munirdurlabhaṁ padam natvanyaiḥ prāpyate puṇyaistapobhirmuktidaṁ padam
That sage entered the abode of Vishnu, a station hard to attain — a liberating station reached by no other merit or austerity.
Verse 7 (padma.2.5.7)
viṣṇostu ciṁtanairnyāsadhyānajñānaiḥ stavaistathā na dānaistīrthayātrābhirdṛśyate madhusūdanaḥ
Not by meditation on Vishnu, nor by renunciation, contemplation, knowledge, or hymns, nor by gifts or pilgrimages is Madhusudana seen—
Verse 8 (padma.2.5.8)
samādhijñānayogena dṛśyate paramaṁ padam mahāyogairyathā vipraḥ praviṣṭo vaiṣṇavīṁ tanum
—only through samadhi, knowledge, and yoga is that supreme station seen; by great yogic power alone did that brahmin enter into the very body of Vishnu.
Verse 9 (padma.2.5.9)
sūta uvāca- tatastatra tapastepe somaśarmā mahādyutiḥ aśmaloṣṭasamaṁ mene kāṁcanaṁbhūṣaṇaṁ punaḥ
Suta said: There, thereafter, the greatly radiant Somasharma performed austerity; he regarded gold and ornaments as no different from stone or clods of earth.
Verse 10 (padma.2.5.10)
jitāhāraḥ sa dharmātmā nidrayā parivarjitaḥ sa sarvānviṣayāṁstyaktvā ekāṁtamapi sevate
That righteous one, mastering his hunger and forsaking sleep, abandoned all sense objects and took to solitude.
Verse 11 (padma.2.5.11)
yogāsanasamārūḍho nirāśo niḥparigrahaḥ tasya velā susaṁprāptā mṛtyukālasya vai tadā
Seated in a yogic posture, free of desire and possessions — then the hour of his death drew fully near.
Verse 12 (padma.2.5.12)
āgatā dānavā vipraṁ somaśarmāṇamaṁtike mṛtyukāle tu saṁprāpte prāṇayātrā pravartinaḥ
Danavas came near the brahmin Somasharma; as the hour of death arrived, the passage of his vital breaths began—
Verse 13 (padma.2.5.13)
śāligrāme mahākṣetre ṛṣīṇāṁ mānavarddhane kecidvadaṁti vai daityāḥ kecidvadaṁti dānavāḥ
—at the great holy place named Shaligrama, which enhances the honor of sages; some voices cried 'daityas,' others 'danavas'—
Verse 14 (padma.2.5.14)
evaṁvidho mahāśabdaḥ karṇaraṁdhraṁ gatastadā tasyaiva vipravaryasya sucirātsomaśarmaṇaḥ
—and such a great clamor entered the ears of that excellent brahmin Somasharma, so long absorbed in meditation.
Verse 15 (padma.2.5.15)
jñānadhyānavilagnasya praviṣṭaṁ daityajaṁ bhayam tena dhyānena tasyāpi daityabhītyaiva vai tadā
Into him, absorbed in knowledge and meditation, there entered a fear born of the daityas; and through that very meditation, by that fear alone—
Verse 16 (padma.2.5.16)
satvaraṁ caiva tatprāṇā gatāstasya mahātmanaḥ daityabhayena saṁyuktaḥ sa hi mṛtyuvaśaṁ gataḥ
—the life-breath of that great soul departed swiftly; overcome by fear of the daityas, he fell under the sway of death.
Verse 17 (padma.2.5.17)
tasmāddaityagṛhe jāto hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sutaḥ devāsure mahāyuddhe nihataścakrapāṇinā
For this reason he was born in the house of a daitya, as the son of Hiranyakashipu, and in the great war of gods and demons was slain by the wielder of the discus.
Verse 18 (padma.2.5.18)
yuddhyamānena tenāpi prahlādena mahātmanā sudṛṣṭaṁ vāsudevatvaṁ viśvarūpasamanvitam
Even as he fought, that great soul Prahlada clearly beheld the very godhead of Vasudeva, together with his universal form.
Verse 19 (padma.2.5.19)
yogābhyāsena pūrveṇa jñānamāsīnmahātmanaḥ sasmāra pūrvakaṁ sarvaṁ caritaṁ śivaśarmaṇaḥ
Through the practice of yoga from his former life, knowledge arose in that great soul; he remembered his whole former life as Shivasharma's son—
Verse 20 (padma.2.5.20)
prāgahaṁ somaśarmākhyaḥ praviṣṭo dānavīṁ tanum asmātkāyātkadā puṇyaṁ kevalaṁ dhāma uttamam
—'formerly I was named Somasharma; through fear I entered a demon's body. From this body, when shall I attain that sole, supreme, meritorious abode—'
Verse 21 (padma.2.5.21)
prayāsyāmi mahāpuṇyairjñānākhyairmokṣadāyakam samare mriyamāṇena prahlādena mahātmanā
—'through great merit, through the means called knowledge, that liberating abode?' Thus, as he lay dying in battle, that great soul Prahlada—
Verse 22 (padma.2.5.22)
evaṁ ciṁtā kṛtā pūrvaṁ śrūyatāṁ dvijasattamāḥ evaṁ tu ca samākhyātaṁ sarvasaṁdehanāśanam
—had already so reflected; hear this, O worthy brahmins. Thus has this whole doubt-dispelling account been told.
Verse 23 (padma.2.5.23)
sūta uvāca- prahlāde nihate saṁkhye devadevena cakriṇā rurude kamalā sā tu hataputrā ca kāminī
Suta said: When Prahlada was slain by the discus-bearing god of gods, that lady Kamala, her son now slain, wept aloud—
Verse 24 (padma.2.5.24)
prahlādasya tu yā mātā hiraṇyakaśipoḥ priyā prahlādasya mahāśokairdivārātrau praśocati
—she who was Prahlada's mother, the beloved of Hiranyakashipu, mourning him with great grief day and night.
Verse 25 (padma.2.5.25)
pativratā mahābhāgā kamalā nāma tatpriyā rodamānāṁ divārātrau nāradastāmuvāca ha
To that devoted, greatly fortunate wife named Kamala, weeping day and night, Narada spoke:
Verse 26 (padma.2.5.26)
mā śucastvaṁ mahābhāge putrārthaṁ puṇyabhāgini nihato vāsudevena tava putraḥ sameṣyati
'Grieve not for your son, O greatly fortunate, meritorious one; slain though he was by Vasudeva, your son shall come to you once more.'
Verse 27 (padma.2.5.27)
bhūyaḥ svalakṣaṇopetastvatsutaśca mahāmatiḥ prahlādeti ca vai nāma punarasya bhaviṣyati
'Once more endowed with his own marks, that great-minded son of yours — Prahlada shall again be his name.'
Verse 28 (padma.2.5.28)
vihīnaścāsurairbhāvairdevatvena samanvitaḥ iṁdratve modate bhadre sarvadevairnamaskṛtaḥ
'Free of every demonic nature, endowed instead with divinity, he shall rejoice in the state of Indra, O gracious one, honored by every god.'
Verse 29 (padma.2.5.29)
sukhībhavamahābhāgetenaputreṇavaisadā na prakāśyā tvayā devi suvārteyaṁ ca kasyacit
'Because of that son, be happy always, O greatly fortunate one; but this good news must never be revealed by you to anyone.'
Verse 30 (padma.2.5.30)
karttavyamajñānabhāvaiḥ sugopyaṁ kuru tvaṁ sadā evamuktvā gato vipro nārado munisattamaḥ
'Feign ignorance and keep it always well guarded, ever secret.' Having said this, Narada, foremost of sages, departed.
Verse 31 (padma.2.5.31)
kamalāyāścodare tu janmā syānuttamaṁ punaḥ prahlādeti ca vai nāma tasyākhyānaṁ mahātmanaḥ
In Kamala's womb, once more, that supreme birth came about; the name Prahlada was again given to that great soul.
Verse 32 (padma.2.5.32)
bālyaṁ bhāvaṁ gato viprāḥ kṛṣṇameva vyaciṁtayat narasiṁhaprasādena devarājo bhaveddivi
Even in childhood, O brahmins, he thought of Krishna alone; by Narasimha's grace he was to become the king of the gods in heaven.
Verse 33 (padma.2.5.33)
devatvaṁ labhya caivāsāvaiṁdraṁ padamanuttamam mokṣaṁ yāsyati jñānātmā vaiṣṇavaṁ dhāma cottamam
Having attained divinity and that supreme station of Indra, that soul of knowledge shall in the end reach liberation, the supreme abode of Vishnu.
Verse 34 (padma.2.5.34)
asaṁkhyātā mahābhāgāḥ sṛṣṭerbhāvā hyanekaśaḥ moha evaṁ na karttavyo jñānavadbhirmahātmabhiḥ
O greatly fortunate ones, the workings of creation are innumerable and manifold; such confusion should never trouble great souls possessed of knowledge.
Verse 35 (padma.2.5.35)
etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ yathāpṛṣṭaṁ dvijottamāḥ anyaṁ pṛccha mahābhāga saṁdehaṁ te bhinadmyaham
O best of brahmins, all this has been told to you just as you asked. Ask something further, O greatly fortunate one; I shall dispel your doubt.
Verse 36 (padma.2.5.36)
vijayaṁ devatānāṁ tu dānavānāṁ mahatkṣayam kṛtaṁ hi devadevena sthāpitaṁ bhuvanatrayam
The victory of the gods and the great destruction of the danavas were wrought by the god of gods, and the three worlds were established anew.
Verse 37 (padma.2.5.37)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ- indratvaṁ kasya saṁjātaṁ devānāṁ śabdadhārakam kena dattaṁ tvamācakṣva vistarāddvijasattama
The sages said: To whom did the Indra-hood, bearer of authority over the gods, come? By whom was it granted? Tell us in full, O worthy brahmin.
Verse 38 (padma.2.5.38)
sūta uvāca- vistareṇa pravakṣyāmi indratve yena sattamaḥ prāpta eṣa mahābhāgo yathā puṇyatamena ca
Suta said: I shall relate in full by what supreme merit that greatly fortunate, worthy one attained the state of Indra.
Verse 39 (padma.2.5.39)
hateṣu teṣu daityeṣu samasteṣumahāhave atinaṣṭeṣu pāpeṣu goviṁdena mahātmanā
When all the daityas had been slain in that great battle, and those sinners utterly destroyed by the great soul Govinda—
Verse 40 (padma.2.5.40)
tato devāḥ sagaṁdharvā nāgā vidyādharāstathā saṁprocurmādhavaṁ sarve baddhaprāṁjalayastataḥ
—then the gods, together with the gandharvas, nagas, and vidyadharas, all spoke to Madhava, their hands joined in reverence:
Verse 41 (padma.2.5.41)
bhagavandevadeveśa hṛṣīkeśa namostu te vijñāpayāmahe tvāṁ vai tatsarvamavadhāryatām
'O Lord, O god of gods, O Hrishikesha, homage to you! We entreat you — hear this our petition in full—'
Verse 42 (padma.2.5.42)
śāstā goptā ca puṇyātmā asmākaṁ kuru keśava rājānaṁ puṇyadharmāṇaṁ tvamiṁdraṁ lokaśāsanam
—'make for us, O Keshava, a ruler and protector, a meritorious king, one of virtuous dharma, an Indra to govern the worlds—'
Verse 43 (padma.2.5.43)
trailokyasya prajā deva yamāśritya sukhaṁ labhet vāsudeva uvāca- mama loke mahābhāgā vaiṣṇavena samanvitaḥ
—'under whose refuge the people of the three worlds, O god, may find happiness.' Vasudeva said: 'O greatly fortunate ones, in my own realm, endowed with Vaishnava splendor—'
Verse 44 (padma.2.5.44)
tejasā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaścirakālaṁ nivāsitaḥ tasya kālaḥ prapūrṇaśca mama loke mahātmanaḥ
—'a foremost brahmin has long dwelt. That great soul's time in my world has now become complete.'
Verse 45 (padma.2.5.45)
vasatastasya viprasya madbhaktasya surottamāḥ tejasā vaiṣṇavenaiva bhavatāṁ pālako hi saḥ
'That brahmin, my devotee, O best of gods — by Vaishnava splendor alone shall he become your protector.'
Verse 46 (padma.2.5.46)
bhaviṣyati sa dharmātmā sa ca dharmānuraṁjakaḥ pālako dhārakaścaiva sa ca brāhmaṇasattamaḥ
'He shall become that righteous one, delighting in dharma; a protector and sustainer too, that foremost of brahmins—'
Verse 47 (padma.2.5.47)
bhaviṣyati sa dharmātmā bhavatāṁ trāṇakāraṇāt adityāstanayaścaiva suvratākhyo mahāmanāḥ
—'he shall become that righteous one for your protection alone. And he shall be born the son of Aditi, named Suvrata, of great mind—'
Verse 48 (padma.2.5.48)
mahābalo mahāvīryaḥ sa va iṁdro bhaviṣyati sūta uvāca- evaṁ varānsa deveśo datvā devebhya uttamam
—'of great strength and great valor, he shall become your Indra.' Suta said: Having thus granted this supreme boon to the gods, the Lord of the gods—
Verse 49 (padma.2.5.49)
devā vijayinaḥ sarve viṣṇunā saha sattamāḥ kaśyapaṁ pitaraṁ dṛṣṭuṁ mātaraṁ ca tato gatāḥ
—and all the victorious gods, together with Vishnu, O worthy ones, then went to see their father Kashyapa and their mother.
Verse 50 (padma.2.5.50)
praṇemuste mahātmāna ubhāvetau sukhāsanau ūcuḥ prāṁjalayaḥ sarve harṣeṇa mahatānvitāḥ
They bowed before those two great souls, seated at ease; all of them, hands joined, filled with great joy, said:
Verse 51 (padma.2.5.51)
yuvayośca prasādena devatvaṁ hi gatā vayam harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo devānvākyamuvāca saḥ
'By the grace of you both, we have indeed attained divinity.' Filled with great joy, he then spoke this word to the gods:
Verse 52 (padma.2.5.52)
kaśyapa uvāca- yūyaṁ vai satyadharmeṇa vartamānāḥ sadaiva hi āvayośca prasādena tapasaśca prabhāvataḥ
Kashyapa said: 'You all ever abide by true dharma; and by our grace, and by the power of austerity—'
Verse 53 (padma.2.5.53)
prāptavaṁto bhavaṁtastu devatvaṁ cākṣayaṁ padam varameva dadāmyeṣāṁ bahuprītisamanvitāḥ
—'you have attained divinity, that imperishable station. Now, filled with abundant delight, I grant these a boon—'
Verse 54 (padma.2.5.54)
amarā nirjarāścaiva akṣayāśca bhaviṣyatha sarvakāmasamṛddhārthāḥ sarvasiddhisamanvitāḥ
—'you shall all be immortal, ageless, imperishable, rich in every desire and endowed with every accomplishment.'
Verse 55 (padma.2.5.55)
devā nāgāśca gaṁdharvā matprasādānmahāsurāḥ viṣṇuruvāca- varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te devamātaryaśasvini
'Gods, nagas, gandharvas, and great asuras alike — by my grace.' Vishnu said: 'Choose a boon, O renowned mother of the gods — good fortune to you—'
Verse 56 (padma.2.5.56)
manasā cepsitaṁ sarvaṁ tatte dadmi suniścitam aditiruvāca- pūrvaṁ putravatī bhūtā prasādāttava mādhava
—'whatever your heart desires, that I shall surely grant.' Aditi said: 'O Madhava, once before, by your grace, I became mother of sons—'
Verse 57 (padma.2.5.57)
amarā nirjarāḥ sarve akṣayāḥ puṇyavatsalāḥ amī putrā mayā labdhāḥ śrūyatāṁ madhusūdana
—'all immortal, ageless, imperishable, devoted to merit. These sons I have obtained — hear me, O Madhusudana—'
Verse 58 (padma.2.5.58)
sutarāṁ tvaṁ ca goviṁda sarvakāmasamṛddhidaḥ mama garbhe vasaṁścaiva bhavāṁśca mama naṁdanaḥ
—'and you, O Govinda, especially, bestower of every desire's fulfillment — dwelling in my womb, may you become my own beloved son—'
Verse 59 (padma.2.5.59)
tvayā putreṇa nityaṁ ca yathā naṁdāmi keśava evaṁ mahodayaṁ nātha pūrayasva manoratham
—'so that through you, my son, I may rejoice always, O Keshava. Fulfill, O Lord, this great desire of mine.'
Verse 60 (padma.2.5.60)
vāsudeva uvāca- bhavatyā devakāryārthaṁ gaṁtavyaṁ mānuṣīṁ tanum tadāhaṁ tava garbhe vai vāsaṁ yāsyāmi niścitam
Vasudeva said: 'For the sake of the gods' work, you must take a human form; then I shall surely come to dwell in your womb.'
Verse 61 (padma.2.5.61)
yuge dvādaśake prāpte bhūbhāraharaṇāya vai jamadagnisuto devi rāmo nāma dvijottamaḥ
