Verse 1 (padma.2.53.1)

सुकलोवाच- एवं धर्मं श्रुतं पूर्वं पुराणेषु तदा मया । पतिहीना कथं भोगं करिष्ये पापनिश्चया

sukalovāca- evaṁ dharmaṁ śrutaṁ pūrvaṁ purāṇeṣu tadā mayā patihīnā kathaṁ bhogaṁ kariṣye pāpaniścayā

Sukala said: Thus have I heard this dharma before, told of old in the Puranas. How, bereft of my husband, should I, resolved in sin, indulge in pleasure?

Verse 2 (padma.2.53.2)

कांतेन तु विना तेन जीवं काये न धारये । विष्णुरुवाच- एवमुक्त्वा परं धर्मं पतिव्रतमनुत्तमम्

kāṁtena tu vinā tena jīvaṁ kāye na dhāraye viṣṇuruvāca- evamuktvā paraṁ dharmaṁ pativratamanuttamam

'Without that beloved of mine, I shall not hold life in this body.' Vishnu said: Having thus spoken of the supreme, unsurpassed dharma of a devoted wife —

Verse 3 (padma.2.53.3)

तास्तु सख्यो वरा नार्यो हर्षेण महतान्विताः । श्रुत्वा धर्मं परं पुण्यं नारीणां गतिदायकम्

tāstu sakhyo varā nāryo harṣeṇa mahatānvitāḥ śrutvā dharmaṁ paraṁ puṇyaṁ nārīṇāṁ gatidāyakam

—those excellent women, her friends, filled with great joy, having heard that supreme, sacred dharma that grants women their true destiny —

Verse 4 (padma.2.53.4)

स्तुवंति तां महाभागां सुकलां धर्मवत्सलाम् । ब्राह्मणाश्च सुराः सर्वे पुण्यस्त्रियो नरोत्तम

stuvaṁti tāṁ mahābhāgāṁ sukalāṁ dharmavatsalām brāhmaṇāśca surāḥ sarve puṇyastriyo narottama

—praised that blessed Sukala, so devoted to dharma; and brahmins, and all the gods, and virtuous women too, O foremost of men —

Verse 5 (padma.2.53.5)

तस्या ध्यानं प्रकुर्वंति पतिकामप्रभावतः । अत्यर्थं दृढतामिंद्र सुःविचिंत्य सुरेश्वरः

tasyā dhyānaṁ prakurvaṁti patikāmaprabhāvataḥ atyarthaṁ dṛḍhatāmiṁdra suḥviciṁtya sureśvaraḥ

—meditated upon her, by the power of her devotion to her husband. Indra, lord of the gods, pondering deeply upon her exceeding firmness —

Verse 6 (padma.2.53.6)

सुकलायाः परं भावं सुविचार्यामरेश्वरः । चालये धैर्यमस्याश्च पतिस्नेहं न संशयः

sukalāyāḥ paraṁ bhāvaṁ suvicāryāmareśvaraḥ cālaye dhairyamasyāśca patisnehaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

—the lord of immortals, having well considered Sukala's supreme resolve, thought: 'I shall shake her steadfastness and her love for her husband — without doubt.'

Verse 7 (padma.2.53.7)

सस्मार मन्मथं देवं त्वरमाणः सुराधिपः । पुष्पचापं स संगृह्य मीनकेतुः समागतः

sasmāra manmathaṁ devaṁ tvaramāṇaḥ surādhipaḥ puṣpacāpaṁ sa saṁgṛhya mīnaketuḥ samāgataḥ

The lord of the gods, hastening, called to mind the god Manmatha; and Kamadeva, the fish-bannered one, taking up his flower-bow, arrived.

Verse 8 (padma.2.53.8)

प्रियया च तया युक्तो रत्या दृष्टमहाबलः । बद्धांजलिपुटो भूत्वा सहस्राक्षमुवाच सः

priyayā ca tayā yukto ratyā dṛṣṭamahābalaḥ baddhāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā sahasrākṣamuvāca saḥ

Accompanied by his beloved Rati, that mighty one arrived; and, with folded hands, he spoke to the thousand-eyed Indra —

Verse 9 (padma.2.53.9)

कस्मादहं त्वया नाथ अधुना संस्मृतो विभो । आदेशो दीयतां मेद्य सर्वभावेन मानद

kasmādahaṁ tvayā nātha adhunā saṁsmṛto vibho ādeśo dīyatāṁ medya sarvabhāvena mānada

'—"Why, my lord, have I now been called to mind by you? O mighty one, give me your command; today, O giver of honor, I am wholly at your service."'

Verse 10 (padma.2.53.10)

इंद्र उवाच- सुकलेयं महाभागा पतिव्रतपरायणा । शृणुष्व कामदेव त्वं कुरु साहाय्यमुत्तमम्

iṁdra uvāca- sukaleyaṁ mahābhāgā pativrataparāyaṇā śṛṇuṣva kāmadeva tvaṁ kuru sāhāyyamuttamam

Indra said: 'This Sukala is a blessed woman, devoted wholly to her vow of chastity. Listen, O Kamadeva — lend me your excellent aid.'

Verse 11 (padma.2.53.11)

निष्कर्षय महाभागां सुकलां पुण्यमंगलाम् । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य शक्रस्य तमथाब्रवीत्

niṣkarṣaya mahābhāgāṁ sukalāṁ puṇyamaṁgalām tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya śakrasya tamathābravīt

'Draw out and test that blessed, most auspicious Sukala.' Hearing these words of Shakra, he replied to him —

Verse 12 (padma.2.53.12)

एवमस्तु सहस्राक्ष करिष्यामि न संशयः । साहाय्यं देवदेवेश तव कौतुककारणात्

evamastu sahasrākṣa kariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ sāhāyyaṁ devadeveśa tava kautukakāraṇāt

'So be it, thousand-eyed one; I shall do this without doubt — I shall lend my aid, O lord of the gods, for the sake of your curiosity.'

Verse 13 (padma.2.53.13)

एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः कंदर्पो मुनिदुर्जयः । देवाञ्जेतुं समर्थोऽहं समुनीनृषिसत्तमान्

evamuktvā mahātejāḥ kaṁdarpo munidurjayaḥ devāñjetuṁ samartho'haṁ samunīnṛṣisattamān

Having spoken thus, that greatly resplendent Kandarpa, unconquerable even by sages, declared: 'I am able to conquer the gods, and even the best of sages and seers.'

Verse 14 (padma.2.53.14)

किं पुनः कामिनीं देव यस्या अंगे न वै बलम् । कामिनीनामहं देव अंगेषु निवसाम्यहम्

kiṁ punaḥ kāminīṁ deva yasyā aṁge na vai balam kāminīnāmahaṁ deva aṁgeṣu nivasāmyaham

'What then, O lord, of a mere woman, in whose limbs there is no such strength? O lord, I dwell within the very limbs of women.'

Verse 15 (padma.2.53.15)

भाले कुचेषु नेत्रेषु कचाग्रेषु च सर्वदा । नाभौ कट्यां पृष्ठदेशे जघने योनिमंडले

bhāle kuceṣu netreṣu kacāgreṣu ca sarvadā nābhau kaṭyāṁ pṛṣṭhadeśe jaghane yonimaṁḍale

'—ever in the forehead, the breasts, the eyes, the tips of the hair; in the navel, the waist, the back, the loins, and the seat of the womb —'

Verse 16 (padma.2.53.16)

अधरे दंतभागेषु कक्षायां हि न संशयः । अंगेष्वेवं प्रत्यंगेषु सर्वत्र निवसाम्यहम्

adhare daṁtabhāgeṣu kakṣāyāṁ hi na saṁśayaḥ aṁgeṣvevaṁ pratyaṁgeṣu sarvatra nivasāmyaham

'—on the lower lip, among the teeth, and in the underarms too, without doubt — in every limb and every part of the body I dwell everywhere.'

Verse 17 (padma.2.53.17)

नारी मम गृहं देव सदा तत्र वसाम्यहम् । तत्रस्थः पुरुषान्सर्वान्मारयामि न संशयः

nārī mama gṛhaṁ deva sadā tatra vasāmyaham tatrasthaḥ puruṣānsarvānmārayāmi na saṁśayaḥ

'A woman, O lord, is my very home; I ever dwell there. Established there, I slay all men — without doubt.'

Verse 18 (padma.2.53.18)

स्वभावेनाबलादेव संतप्ता मम मार्गणैः । पितरं मातरं दृष्ट्वा अन्यं स्वजनबांधवम्

svabhāvenābalādeva saṁtaptā mama mārgaṇaiḥ pitaraṁ mātaraṁ dṛṣṭvā anyaṁ svajanabāṁdhavam

'By nature, though seemingly weak, when scorched by my arrows, a woman, disregarding even father, mother, or any other kinsman —'

Verse 19 (padma.2.53.19)

सुरूपं सगुणं देव मम बाणा हता सती । चलते नात्र संदेहो विपाकं नैव चिंतयेत्

surūpaṁ saguṇaṁ deva mama bāṇā hatā satī calate nātra saṁdeho vipākaṁ naiva ciṁtayet

'—even a fair, virtuous, chaste woman, struck by my arrows, O lord, wavers, without doubt, and gives no thought to the consequence.'

Verse 20 (padma.2.53.20)

योनिः स्पंदेत नारीणां स्तनाग्रौ च सुरेश्वर । नास्ति धैर्यं सुरेशान सुकलां नाशयाम्यहम्

yoniḥ spaṁdeta nārīṇāṁ stanāgrau ca sureśvara nāsti dhairyaṁ sureśāna sukalāṁ nāśayāmyaham

'A woman's very womb throbs, and the tips of her breasts too, O lord of gods — no steadfastness remains. O lord of gods, I shall bring down Sukala's resolve.'

Verse 21 (padma.2.53.21)

इंद्र उवाच- पुरुषोहं भविष्यामि रूपवान्गुणवान्धनी । कौतुकार्थमिमां नारीं चालयामि मनोभव

iṁdra uvāca- puruṣohaṁ bhaviṣyāmi rūpavānguṇavāndhanī kautukārthamimāṁ nārīṁ cālayāmi manobhava

Indra said: 'I myself shall become a man, handsome, virtuous, and wealthy; for the sake of curiosity I shall test this woman's resolve, O Manobhava.'

Verse 22 (padma.2.53.22)

नैव कामान्न संत्रासान्न वा लोभान्न कारणात् । न वै मोहान्न वै क्रोधात्सत्यं सत्यं रतिप्रिय

naiva kāmānna saṁtrāsānna vā lobhānna kāraṇāt na vai mohānna vai krodhātsatyaṁ satyaṁ ratipriya

'Not out of lust, not out of any fear, nor greed, nor any other cause; not out of delusion, not out of anger — truly, truly, O beloved of Rati.'

Verse 23 (padma.2.53.23)

कथं मे दृश्यते तस्या महत्सत्यं पतिव्रतम् । निष्कर्षिष्य इतो गत्वा भवन्मोहोत्र कारणम्

kathaṁ me dṛśyate tasyā mahatsatyaṁ pativratam niṣkarṣiṣya ito gatvā bhavanmohotra kāraṇam

'I wish only to see how great and true her chastity truly is. Going from here, I shall test her — your power of delusion is the means here.'

Verse 24 (padma.2.53.24)

एवं कामं च संदिश्य जगाम सुरराट्स्वयम् । आत्मविकृतिसंभूतो रूपवान्गुणवान्स्वयम्

evaṁ kāmaṁ ca saṁdiśya jagāma surarāṭsvayam ātmavikṛtisaṁbhūto rūpavānguṇavānsvayam

Having thus instructed Kama, the king of the gods himself went forth, transformed by his own power into a handsome, virtuous man.

Verse 25 (padma.2.53.25)

सर्वाभरणशोभांगः सर्वभोगसमन्वितः । भोगलीलासमाकीर्णः सर्वदौदार्यसंयुतः

sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgaḥ sarvabhogasamanvitaḥ bhogalīlāsamākīrṇaḥ sarvadaudāryasaṁyutaḥ

His limbs adorned with every ornament, endowed with every enjoyment, filled with playful pleasures, possessed of every generosity —

Verse 26 (padma.2.53.26)

यत्र सा तिष्ठते देवी कृकलस्य प्रिया नृप । आत्मलीलां स्वरूपं च गुणं भावं प्रदर्शयेत्

yatra sā tiṣṭhate devī kṛkalasya priyā nṛpa ātmalīlāṁ svarūpaṁ ca guṇaṁ bhāvaṁ pradarśayet

—O king, to where that lady, the beloved of Krikala, dwelt, he came; and he showed off his own charm, form, virtue, and manner.

Verse 27 (padma.2.53.27)

नैव पश्यति सा तं तु पुरुषं रूपसंपदम् । यत्रयत्र व्रजेत्सा हि तत्र तां पश्यते नृप

naiva paśyati sā taṁ tu puruṣaṁ rūpasaṁpadam yatrayatra vrajetsā hi tatra tāṁ paśyate nṛpa

Yet she did not so much as look at that man of such abundant beauty; but wherever she went, O king, he would go there to look upon her.

Verse 28 (padma.2.53.28)

साभिलाषेण मनसा तामेवं परिपश्यति । कामचेष्टां सहस्राक्षोऽदर्शयत्सर्वभावकैः

sābhilāṣeṇa manasā tāmevaṁ paripaśyati kāmaceṣṭāṁ sahasrākṣo'darśayatsarvabhāvakaiḥ

With a mind full of longing he gazed upon her thus; and Indra displayed gestures of desire with every possible feeling.

Verse 29 (padma.2.53.29)

चतुष्पथे पथे तीर्थे यत्र देवी प्रयाति सा । तत्रतत्र सहस्राक्षस्तामेव परिपश्यति

catuṣpathe pathe tīrthe yatra devī prayāti sā tatratatra sahasrākṣastāmeva paripaśyati

At the crossroads, on the path, at the sacred bathing-place — wherever that lady went, there and there again Indra kept gazing upon her.

Verse 30 (padma.2.53.30)

इंद्रेण प्रेषिता दूती सुकलां प्रति सा गता । सुकलां सुमहाभागां प्रत्युवाच प्रहस्य वै

iṁdreṇa preṣitā dūtī sukalāṁ prati sā gatā sukalāṁ sumahābhāgāṁ pratyuvāca prahasya vai

A female messenger, sent by Indra, went to Sukala; and, smiling, she spoke to that greatly blessed Sukala —

Verse 31 (padma.2.53.31)

अहो सत्यमहोधैर्यमहो कांतिरहो क्षमा । अस्या रूपेण संसारे नास्ति नारी वरानना

aho satyamahodhairyamaho kāṁtiraho kṣamā asyā rūpeṇa saṁsāre nāsti nārī varānanā

'Ah, what truth! Ah, what steadfastness! Ah, what radiance! Ah, what patience! In all this world there is no fair woman equal to her in beauty!'

Verse 32 (padma.2.53.32)

का त्वं भवसि कल्याणि कस्य भार्या भविष्यसि । यस्य त्वं सगुणा भार्या स धन्यः पुण्यभाग्भुवि

kā tvaṁ bhavasi kalyāṇi kasya bhāryā bhaviṣyasi yasya tvaṁ saguṇā bhāryā sa dhanyaḥ puṇyabhāgbhuvi

'Who are you, auspicious one? Whose wife might you be? He whose virtuous wife you are is blessed, most fortunate on this earth.'

Verse 33 (padma.2.53.33)

तस्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा तामुवाच मनस्विनी । वैश्यजात्यां समुत्पन्नो धर्मात्मा सत्यवत्सलः

tasyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā tāmuvāca manasvinī vaiśyajātyāṁ samutpanno dharmātmā satyavatsalaḥ

Hearing her words, that wise-minded woman said to her: 'Born in the merchant caste, righteous, devoted to truth —'

Verse 34 (padma.2.53.34)

तस्याहं हि प्रिया भार्या सत्यसंधस्य धीमतः । कृकलस्यापि वैश्यस्य सत्यमेव वदामि ते

tasyāhaṁ hi priyā bhāryā satyasaṁdhasya dhīmataḥ kṛkalasyāpi vaiśyasya satyameva vadāmi te

'—Krikala, that wise merchant, true to his word — I am his beloved wife. I speak to you only the truth.'

Verse 35 (padma.2.53.35)

मम भर्ता स धर्मात्मा तीर्थयात्रां गतः सुधीः । तस्मिन्गते महाभागे मम भर्तरि संप्रति

mama bhartā sa dharmātmā tīrthayātrāṁ gataḥ sudhīḥ tasmingate mahābhāge mama bhartari saṁprati

'My husband, that righteous, wise soul, has gone on a pilgrimage to sacred places. Since that blessed one, my husband, has gone —'

Verse 36 (padma.2.53.36)

अतिक्रांताः शृणुष्व त्वं त्रयश्चैवापि वत्सराः । ततोहं दुःखिता जाता विना तेन महात्मना

atikrāṁtāḥ śṛṇuṣva tvaṁ trayaścaivāpi vatsarāḥ tatohaṁ duḥkhitā jātā vinā tena mahātmanā

'—three years have already passed, hear this. Since then I have grown sorrowful, being without that great soul.'

Verse 37 (padma.2.53.37)

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातमात्मवृत्तांतमेव ते । भवती पृच्छते मां का भविष्यति वदस्व मे

etatte sarvamākhyātamātmavṛttāṁtameva te bhavatī pṛcchate māṁ kā bhaviṣyati vadasva me

'This is my whole account, told to you in full. Now you ask me who you might be — tell me.'

Verse 38 (padma.2.53.38)

सुकलाया वचः श्रुत्वा दूत्या आभाषितं पुनः । मामेवं पृच्छसे भद्रे तत्ते सर्वं वदाम्यहम्

sukalāyā vacaḥ śrutvā dūtyā ābhāṣitaṁ punaḥ māmevaṁ pṛcchase bhadre tatte sarvaṁ vadāmyaham

Hearing Sukala's words, the messenger spoke again: 'Since you ask me thus, gentle one, I shall tell you everything.'

Verse 39 (padma.2.53.39)

अहं तवांतिकं प्राप्ता कार्यार्थं वरवर्णिनि । श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि श्रुत्वा चैवाव धार्यताम्

ahaṁ tavāṁtikaṁ prāptā kāryārthaṁ varavarṇini śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi śrutvā caivāva dhāryatām

'I have come near you, O fair one, for a certain purpose. Listen, I shall tell it; hear it and take it well to heart.'

Verse 40 (padma.2.53.40)

गतस्ते निर्घृणो भर्ता त्वां त्यक्त्वा तु वरानने । किं करिष्यसि तेनापि प्रियाघातकरेण च

gataste nirghṛṇo bhartā tvāṁ tyaktvā tu varānane kiṁ kariṣyasi tenāpi priyāghātakareṇa ca

'Your merciless husband has gone, abandoning you, O fair one. What use will you have of him, who has thus struck at your happiness?'

Verse 41 (padma.2.53.41)

यस्त्वां त्यक्त्वा गतः पापी साध्व्याचारसमन्विताम् । किं वा स ते गतो बाले तत्र जीवति वै मृतः

yastvāṁ tyaktvā gataḥ pāpī sādhvyācārasamanvitām kiṁ vā sa te gato bāle tatra jīvati vai mṛtaḥ

'He, sinful one, who abandoned you though you are of such virtuous conduct — child, is that one of yours who has gone even alive or dead there?'

Verse 42 (padma.2.53.42)

किं करिष्यति तेनैवं भवती खिद्यते वृथा । कस्मान्नाशयते चांगं दिव्यं हेमसमप्रभम्

kiṁ kariṣyati tenaivaṁ bhavatī khidyate vṛthā kasmānnāśayate cāṁgaṁ divyaṁ hemasamaprabham

'What is he to you, that you thus grieve in vain? Why do you waste this divine body of yours, radiant as gold?'

Verse 43 (padma.2.53.43)

बाल्ये वयसि संप्राप्ते मानवो न च विंदति । एकं सुखं महाभागे बालक्रीडां विना शुभे

bālye vayasi saṁprāpte mānavo na ca viṁdati ekaṁ sukhaṁ mahābhāge bālakrīḍāṁ vinā śubhe

'When childhood comes upon a person, one finds no other happiness at all, O blessed and auspicious one, apart from childish play.'

Verse 44 (padma.2.53.44)

वार्द्धके दुःखसंप्राप्तिर्जरा कायं प्रहिंसयेत् । तारुण्ये भुज्यते भोगः सुखात्सर्वो वरानने

vārddhake duḥkhasaṁprāptirjarā kāyaṁ prahiṁsayet tāruṇye bhujyate bhogaḥ sukhātsarvo varānane

'In old age comes the attainment of sorrow, as decrepitude assails the body. It is in youth alone, O fair one, that every pleasure is truly enjoyed.'

Verse 45 (padma.2.53.45)

यावत्तिष्ठति तारुण्यं तावद्भुंजंति मानवाः । सुखभोगादिकं सर्वं स्वेच्छया रमते नरः

yāvattiṣṭhati tāruṇyaṁ tāvadbhuṁjaṁti mānavāḥ sukhabhogādikaṁ sarvaṁ svecchayā ramate naraḥ

'As long as youth lasts, so long do people truly enjoy; a man delights, of his own free will, in every pleasure and enjoyment.'

Verse 46 (padma.2.53.46)

यावत्तिष्ठति तारुण्यं तावद्भोगान्प्रभुंजते । वयस्यपि गते भद्रे तारुण्ये किं करिष्यति

yāvattiṣṭhati tāruṇyaṁ tāvadbhogānprabhuṁjate vayasyapi gate bhadre tāruṇye kiṁ kariṣyati

'As long as youth remains, so long are pleasures enjoyed. But, gentle one, once youth's age has passed, what then can be done?'

Verse 47 (padma.2.53.47)

संप्राप्ते वार्द्धके देवि किंचित्कार्यं न सिध्यति । स्थविरश्चिंतयेन्नित्यं सुखकार्यं न गच्छति

saṁprāpte vārddhake devi kiṁcitkāryaṁ na sidhyati sthaviraściṁtayennityaṁ sukhakāryaṁ na gacchati

'When old age arrives, O goddess, nothing at all succeeds. The aged one thinks ever of pleasure, yet it eludes him.'

Verse 48 (padma.2.53.48)

वयस्यपि गते बाले क्रियते सेतुबंधनम् । तादृशोयं भवेत्कायस्तारुण्ये तु गते शुभे

vayasyapi gate bāle kriyate setubaṁdhanam tādṛśoyaṁ bhavetkāyastāruṇye tu gate śubhe

'When the flood has already passed, child, one builds the dam. Just so is this body, O auspicious one, once youth has gone.'

Verse 49 (padma.2.53.49)

तस्माद्भुंक्ष्व सुखेनापि पिबस्व मधुमाधवीम् । कामाबाणा दहंत्यंगं तवेमे चारुलोचने

tasmādbhuṁkṣva sukhenāpi pibasva madhumādhavīm kāmābāṇā dahaṁtyaṁgaṁ taveme cārulocane

'Therefore enjoy pleasure while you may, drink the sweet honeyed wine of spring. These arrows of desire, O lovely-eyed one, burn your very limbs.'

Verse 50 (padma.2.53.50)

अयमेकः समायातः पुरुषो रूपवान्गुणी । अयं हि पुरुषव्याघ्रः सर्वज्ञो गुणवान्धनी

ayamekaḥ samāyātaḥ puruṣo rūpavānguṇī ayaṁ hi puruṣavyāghraḥ sarvajño guṇavāndhanī

'Here has come a certain man, handsome and virtuous; this tiger among men is all-knowing, virtuous, and wealthy.'

Verse 51 (padma.2.53.51)

तवार्थे नित्यसंयुक्तः स्नेहेन वरवर्णिनि । सुकलोवाच- बाल्यं नास्त्यपि जीवस्य तारुण्यं नास्ति जीविते

tavārthe nityasaṁyuktaḥ snehena varavarṇini sukalovāca- bālyaṁ nāstyapi jīvasya tāruṇyaṁ nāsti jīvite

'For your sake alone, he is ever devoted, with love, O fair one.' Sukala said: 'The soul has no childhood, nor is there any youth in the life-principle.'

Verse 52 (padma.2.53.52)

वृद्धत्वं नास्ति चैवास्य स्वयंसिद्धः सुसिद्धिदः । अमरो निर्जरो व्यापी सुसिद्धः सर्ववित्तमः

vṛddhatvaṁ nāsti caivāsya svayaṁsiddhaḥ susiddhidaḥ amaro nirjaro vyāpī susiddhaḥ sarvavittamaḥ

'Nor does it have old age; it is self-accomplished, bestower of perfect accomplishment. It is deathless, ageless, all-pervading, ever perfect, all-knowing.'

Verse 53 (padma.2.53.53)

अकामः कामदो लोके आत्मरूपेण वर्तते । यथा गेहस्य संस्थानं तथा कायस्य दृश्यते

akāmaḥ kāmado loke ātmarūpeṇa vartate yathā gehasya saṁsthānaṁ tathā kāyasya dṛśyate

'Free of desire, yet the giver of desire's fruit in this world, it exists in the very form of the Self. As is the structure of a house, so is seen the structure of the body.'

Verse 54 (padma.2.53.54)

यथा वार्द्धकिना कायस्तथा सूत्रेण मंदिरम् । अनेककाष्ठसंघातैर्नाना दारुसमुच्चयैः

yathā vārddhakinā kāyastathā sūtreṇa maṁdiram anekakāṣṭhasaṁghātairnānā dārusamuccayaiḥ

'As the body is shaped like a carpenter's work, so a house is built by the measuring-cord — with many joined timbers, with heaps of various wood —'

Verse 55 (padma.2.53.55)

मृत्तिकयोदकेनापि समंतात्परिणामयेत् । लिपितं लेपकैः काष्ठं चित्रं भवति चित्रकैः

mṛttikayodakenāpi samaṁtātpariṇāmayet lipitaṁ lepakaiḥ kāṣṭhaṁ citraṁ bhavati citrakaiḥ

'—and it is finished all around with clay and water. The wood, plastered by plasterers, becomes adorned through painters' art.'

Verse 56 (padma.2.53.56)

प्रथमं रूपमायाति गृहं सूत्रेण सूत्रितम् । पुष्णंति च स्वयं तत्तु लेपनाद्वै दिने दिने

prathamaṁ rūpamāyāti gṛhaṁ sūtreṇa sūtritam puṣṇaṁti ca svayaṁ tattu lepanādvai dine dine

'First the house takes shape, measured out by the cord; and day by day it is nourished and built up through plastering.'

Verse 57 (padma.2.53.57)

वायुनांदोलितं नित्यं गृहं च मलिनायते । मध्यमो वर्तुतः कालो गृहस्य परिकथ्यते

vāyunāṁdolitaṁ nityaṁ gṛhaṁ ca malināyate madhyamo vartutaḥ kālo gṛhasya parikathyate

'Ever buffeted by the wind, the house grows soiled in time; that middle period is called the house's prime.'

Verse 58 (padma.2.53.58)

रूपहानिर्भवेत्तस्य गृहस्वामी विलेपयेत् । स्वेच्छया च गृहस्वामी रूपवत्त्वं नयेद्गृहम्

rūpahānirbhavettasya gṛhasvāmī vilepayet svecchayā ca gṛhasvāmī rūpavattvaṁ nayedgṛham

'When its beauty begins to fade, the owner plasters it anew; and by his own will, the owner restores the house to beauty once more.'

Verse 59 (padma.2.53.59)

तारुण्यं तस्य गेहस्य दूतिके परिकथ्यते । काष्ठसंघैश्च जीर्णत्वं बहुकालैः प्रयाति सः

tāruṇyaṁ tasya gehasya dūtike parikathyate kāṣṭhasaṁghaiśca jīrṇatvaṁ bahukālaiḥ prayāti saḥ

'That, O messenger, is called the youth of that house. But with the passage of much time, its timbers grow old and worn.'

Verse 60 (padma.2.53.60)

स्थानभ्रष्टाः प्रजायंते मूलाग्रे प्रचलंति ते । न सहेल्लेपनाभारमाधारेण प्रतिष्ठति

sthānabhraṣṭāḥ prajāyaṁte mūlāgre pracalaṁti te na sahellepanābhāramādhāreṇa pratiṣṭhati

'They fall from their places, and shift loose at root and tip; the house can no longer bear the weight of plaster, and stands only by mere support.'

Verse 61 (padma.2.53.61)

एतद्गृहस्य वार्द्धक्यं कथितं शृणु दूतिके । पतमानं गृहं दृष्ट्वा गृहस्वामी परित्यजेत्

etadgṛhasya vārddhakyaṁ kathitaṁ śṛṇu dūtike patamānaṁ gṛhaṁ dṛṣṭvā gṛhasvāmī parityajet

'This, O messenger, is called the old age of a house — hear it. Seeing the house about to collapse, its owner abandons it.'

Verse 62 (padma.2.53.62)

गृहमन्यं प्रवेशाय प्रयात्येव हि सत्वरम् । तथा बाल्यं च तारुण्यं नृणां वृद्धत्वमेव च

gṛhamanyaṁ praveśāya prayātyeva hi satvaram tathā bālyaṁ ca tāruṇyaṁ nṛṇāṁ vṛddhatvameva ca

'He goes swiftly to enter another house instead. Just so are childhood, youth, and old age for human beings.'

Verse 63 (padma.2.53.63)

स बाल्ये बालरूपश्च ज्ञानहीनं प्रकारयेत् । चित्रयेत्कायमेवापि वस्त्रालंकारभूषणैः

sa bālye bālarūpaśca jñānahīnaṁ prakārayet citrayetkāyamevāpi vastrālaṁkārabhūṣaṇaiḥ

'In childhood one has a child's form, devoid of knowledge; then one adorns even this body with garments and ornaments —'

Verse 64 (padma.2.53.64)

लेपनैश्चंदनैश्चान्यैस्तांबूलप्रभवादिभिः । कायस्तरुणतां याति अतिरूपो विजायते

lepanaiścaṁdanaiścānyaistāṁbūlaprabhavādibhiḥ kāyastaruṇatāṁ yāti atirūpo vijāyate

'—with unguents, with sandal-paste and other things, with betel and its like. The body then takes on youth and becomes exceedingly beautiful.'

Verse 65 (padma.2.53.65)

बाह्याभ्यंतरमेवापि रसैः सर्वैः प्रपोषयेत् । तेन पोषणभावेन परिपुष्टः प्रजायते

bāhyābhyaṁtaramevāpi rasaiḥ sarvaiḥ prapoṣayet tena poṣaṇabhāvena paripuṣṭaḥ prajāyate

'It is nourished, both without and within, by every kind of essence and taste; and by that nourishment it grows full and strong.'

Verse 66 (padma.2.53.66)

जायते मांसवृद्धिस्तु रसैश्चापि नवोत्तमा । यांति विस्तरतां राजन्नंगान्याप्यायितान्यपि

jāyate māṁsavṛddhistu rasaiścāpi navottamā yāṁti vistaratāṁ rājannaṁgānyāpyāyitānyapi

'The flesh increases, ever fresh and finest through such essences; and, O king, its limbs, thus nourished, grow full and broad.'

Verse 67 (padma.2.53.67)

प्रत्यंगानि रसैश्चैव स्वंस्वं रूपं प्रयांति वै । दंताधरौ स्तनौ बाहू कटिपृष्ठमुरू उभे

pratyaṁgāni rasaiścaiva svaṁsvaṁ rūpaṁ prayāṁti vai daṁtādharau stanau bāhū kaṭipṛṣṭhamurū ubhe

'Each limb, through these essences, takes on its own particular beauty — teeth and lips, the breasts, the arms, the waist and back, both thighs —'

Verse 68 (padma.2.53.68)

हस्तपादतलौ तद्वद्वृद्धित्वं प्रतिपेदिरे । उभाभ्यामपि तान्येव वृद्धिमायांति तानि वै

hastapādatalau tadvadvṛddhitvaṁ pratipedire ubhābhyāmapi tānyeva vṛddhimāyāṁti tāni vai

'—and likewise the palms of hands and soles of feet, all attain their growth; by these very essences they all indeed grow full.'

Verse 69 (padma.2.53.69)

अंगानि रसमांसाभ्यां सुरूपाणि भवंति ते । तैः स्वरूपैर्भवेन्मर्त्यो रसबद्धश्च दूतिके

aṁgāni rasamāṁsābhyāṁ surūpāṇi bhavaṁti te taiḥ svarūpairbhavenmartyo rasabaddhaśca dūtike

'Through essence and flesh, the limbs become well-formed; and by their own such forms, O messenger, a mortal becomes bound to these very essences.'

Verse 70 (padma.2.53.70)

सुरूपः कथ्यते मर्त्यो लोके केन प्रियो भवेत् । विष्ठामूत्रस्य वै कोशः काय एष च दूतिके

surūpaḥ kathyate martyo loke kena priyo bhavet viṣṭhāmūtrasya vai kośaḥ kāya eṣa ca dūtike

'A mortal is then called beautiful — but by what, in this world, does he truly become dear? This body, O messenger, is but a vessel of urine and excrement.'

Verse 71 (padma.2.53.71)

अपवित्रशरीरोयं सदा स्रवति निर्घृणः । तस्य किं वर्ण्यते रूपं जलबुद्बुदवच्छुभे

apavitraśarīroyaṁ sadā sravati nirghṛṇaḥ tasya kiṁ varṇyate rūpaṁ jalabudbudavacchubhe

'This impure body ever oozes, merciless as it is. What beauty is there, then, to speak of in it, O auspicious one? It is like a mere bubble of water.'

Verse 72 (padma.2.53.72)

यावत्पंचाशद्वर्षाणि तावत्तिष्ठति वै दृढः । पश्चाच्च जायते हानिस्तस्यैवापि दिनेदिने

yāvatpaṁcāśadvarṣāṇi tāvattiṣṭhati vai dṛḍhaḥ paścācca jāyate hānistasyaivāpi dinedine

'Up to fifty years it remains firm; but after that, day by day, decline sets in for it as well.'

Verse 73 (padma.2.53.73)

दंताः शिथिलतां यांति तथा लालायते मुखम् । चक्षुर्भ्यामपि पश्येन्न कर्णाभ्यां न शृणोति च

daṁtāḥ śithilatāṁ yāṁti tathā lālāyate mukham cakṣurbhyāmapi paśyenna karṇābhyāṁ na śṛṇoti ca

'The teeth grow loose, and the mouth drools; one can no longer see with the eyes, nor hear with the ears.'

Verse 74 (padma.2.53.74)

गतिं कर्तुं न शक्नोति हस्तपादैश्च दूतिके । अक्षमो जायते कायो जराकालेन पीडितः

gatiṁ kartuṁ na śaknoti hastapādaiśca dūtike akṣamo jāyate kāyo jarākālena pīḍitaḥ

'One can no longer walk with hand and foot, O messenger; the body, afflicted by the time of old age, becomes utterly incapable.'

Verse 75 (padma.2.53.75)

तद्रसः शोषमायाति जराग्नितापशोषितः । अक्षमो जायते दूति केन रूपत्वमिष्यते

tadrasaḥ śoṣamāyāti jarāgnitāpaśoṣitaḥ akṣamo jāyate dūti kena rūpatvamiṣyate

'Its very essence dries up, parched by the burning fire of old age; it becomes utterly incapable, O messenger. By what then is its beauty still desired?'

Verse 76 (padma.2.53.76)

यथा जीर्णं गृहं याति क्षयमेवं न संशयः । तथा संक्षयमायाति वार्द्धके तु कलेवरम्

yathā jīrṇaṁ gṛhaṁ yāti kṣayamevaṁ na saṁśayaḥ tathā saṁkṣayamāyāti vārddhake tu kalevaram

'As a decayed house falls into ruin, without doubt, so too the body, in old age, comes to utter ruin.'

Verse 77 (padma.2.53.77)

ममरूपं समायातं वर्णस्येवं दिने दिने । केनाहं रूपसंयुक्ता केन रूपत्वमिष्यते

mamarūpaṁ samāyātaṁ varṇasyevaṁ dine dine kenāhaṁ rūpasaṁyuktā kena rūpatvamiṣyate

'Thus, day by day, my own beauty of complexion too must fade. By what, then, am I possessed of beauty? By what is beauty even desired?'

Verse 78 (padma.2.53.78)

यथा जीर्णं गृहं याति केनासौ पुरुषो बली । यस्यार्थमागता दूति भवती केन शंसति

yathā jīrṇaṁ gṛhaṁ yāti kenāsau puruṣo balī yasyārthamāgatā dūti bhavatī kena śaṁsati

'As a house grows old and decayed, so too shall that mighty man of yours. For whose sake, O messenger, have you come, and on whose word do you speak?'

Verse 79 (padma.2.53.79)

किमु चैव त्वया दृष्टं ममांगे वद सांप्रतम् । तस्यांगादिह हीनं च दूति नास्त्यधिकं तथा

kimu caiva tvayā dṛṣṭaṁ mamāṁge vada sāṁpratam tasyāṁgādiha hīnaṁ ca dūti nāstyadhikaṁ tathā

'What indeed have you seen in my body — tell me now. There is nothing lacking in it, O messenger, nor is there anything more, than in his.'

Verse 80 (padma.2.53.80)

यथा त्वं च तथासौवै तथाहं नात्र संशयः । कस्य रूपं न विद्येत रूपवान्नास्ति भूतले

yathā tvaṁ ca tathāsauvai tathāhaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ kasya rūpaṁ na vidyeta rūpavānnāsti bhūtale

'As you are, so is he, and so too am I — without doubt. Whose beauty does not exist? There is no truly beautiful one on this earth.'

Verse 81 (padma.2.53.81)

उच्छ्रायाः पतनांताश्च नगास्तु गिरयः शुभे । कालेन पीडिता यांति तद्वद्भूताश्च नान्यथा

ucchrāyāḥ patanāṁtāśca nagāstu girayaḥ śubhe kālena pīḍitā yāṁti tadvadbhūtāśca nānyathā

'Even towering mountains and hills, O auspicious one, end in their fall; afflicted by time they too pass away — and so it is, no differently, for all created beings.'

Verse 82 (padma.2.53.82)

अरूपो रूपवान्दिव्य आत्मा सर्वगतः शुचिः । स्थावरेष्वेव सर्वेषु जंगमेषु च दूतिके

arūpo rūpavāndivya ātmā sarvagataḥ śuciḥ sthāvareṣveva sarveṣu jaṁgameṣu ca dūtike

'Formless yet the very source of form, divine, all-pervading, pure — the Self dwells alike in all things unmoving and moving, O messenger.'

Verse 83 (padma.2.53.83)

एको निवसते शुद्धो घटेष्वेकं यथोदकम् । घटनाशात्प्रयात्येकमेकत्वं त्वं न बुध्यसे

eko nivasate śuddho ghaṭeṣvekaṁ yathodakam ghaṭanāśātprayātyekamekatvaṁ tvaṁ na budhyase

'That one, pure, dwells within all, as one water dwells within many pots. When the pot breaks, that one merges into the one — yet you do not understand this oneness.'

Verse 84 (padma.2.53.84)

पिंडनाशादयं चात्मा एकरूपो विजायते । एकं रूपं मया दृष्टं संसारे वसता सदा

piṁḍanāśādayaṁ cātmā ekarūpo vijāyate ekaṁ rūpaṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ saṁsāre vasatā sadā

'When the body perishes, this Self becomes of one form again. I have seen only this one true form, dwelling ever in this world.'

Verse 85 (padma.2.53.85)

एवं वद स्वतं ज्ञात्वा यस्यार्थमिह चागता । दर्शयस्व अपूर्वं मे यदि भोक्तुमिहेच्छसि

evaṁ vada svataṁ jñātvā yasyārthamiha cāgatā darśayasva apūrvaṁ me yadi bhoktumihecchasi

'Knowing this, speak plainly of your own purpose in coming here. Show me something truly unprecedented, if you wish me to indulge here.'

Verse 86 (padma.2.53.86)

व्याधिना पीड्यमानस्य कफेनापि वृतस्य च । अंगाद्विचलते शोणः स्थानभ्रष्टोभिजायते

vyādhinā pīḍyamānasya kaphenāpi vṛtasya ca aṁgādvicalate śoṇaḥ sthānabhraṣṭobhijāyate

'In one afflicted with disease, covered over with phlegm, the very blood departs from the limbs, and displacement occurs.'

Verse 87 (padma.2.53.87)

अंगसंधिषु सर्वासु पलत्वं चांतरं गतः । एकतो नाशमायाति स्वं हि रूपं परित्यजेत्

aṁgasaṁdhiṣu sarvāsu palatvaṁ cāṁtaraṁ gataḥ ekato nāśamāyāti svaṁ hi rūpaṁ parityajet

'In every joint of the body, decay creeps in from within; on the one hand it comes to ruin, and it must abandon its very own form.'

Verse 88 (padma.2.53.88)

विष्ठात्वं जायते शीघ्रं कृमिभिश्च भवेत्किल । तद्वद्दुःखकरं वापि निजरूपं परित्यजेत्

viṣṭhātvaṁ jāyate śīghraṁ kṛmibhiśca bhavetkila tadvadduḥkhakaraṁ vāpi nijarūpaṁ parityajet

'It swiftly turns to mere filth, and becomes indeed the home of worms; so too, in painful fashion, must it forsake its own form.'

Verse 89 (padma.2.53.89)

श्रूयतां जायते पश्चात्कृमिदुर्गंधसंकुलम् । जायंते तत्र वै यूकाः कृमयो वा न संशयः

śrūyatāṁ jāyate paścātkṛmidurgaṁdhasaṁkulam jāyaṁte tatra vai yūkāḥ kṛmayo vā na saṁśayaḥ

'Hear further: afterward it becomes filled with worms and foul stench; there indeed arise lice and worms, without doubt.'

Verse 90 (padma.2.53.90)

सकृमिः कुरुते स्फोटं कंडूं च परिदारुणाम् । व्यथामुत्पादयेद्यूका सर्वांगं परिचालयेत्

sakṛmiḥ kurute sphoṭaṁ kaṁḍūṁ ca paridāruṇām vyathāmutpādayedyūkā sarvāṁgaṁ paricālayet

'The worm-ridden body erupts in sores and terrible itching; the lice produce distress and cause the whole body to writhe.'

Verse 91 (padma.2.53.91)

नखाग्रैर्घृष्यमाणा सा कंडूः शांता प्रजायते । तद्वत्तैश्च शृणुष्वैव सुरतस्य न संशयः

nakhāgrairghṛṣyamāṇā sā kaṁḍūḥ śāṁtā prajāyate tadvattaiśca śṛṇuṣvaiva suratasya na saṁśayaḥ

'Scratched by the tips of the nails, that itching subsides. Just so, hear this, is the very nature of sexual union — without doubt.'

Verse 92 (padma.2.53.92)

भुंजत्येव रसान्मर्त्यः सुभिक्षान्पिबते पुनः । वायुना तेन प्राणेन पाकस्थानं प्रणीयते

bhuṁjatyeva rasānmartyaḥ subhikṣānpibate punaḥ vāyunā tena prāṇena pākasthānaṁ praṇīyate

'A mortal enjoys tastes, eats good food, and drinks; and by that vital breath, it is carried to the place of digestion.'

Verse 93 (padma.2.53.93)

यद्भक्तं प्राणिभिर्दूति पाकस्थानं गतं पुनः । सर्वं तत्पिहितं तत्र वायुर्वै पातयेन्मलम्

yadbhaktaṁ prāṇibhirdūti pākasthānaṁ gataṁ punaḥ sarvaṁ tatpihitaṁ tatra vāyurvai pātayenmalam

'Whatever food, O messenger, is eaten by beings and reaches the place of digestion, all of it is processed there, and the wind casts out the waste.'

Verse 94 (padma.2.53.94)

सारभूतो रसस्तत्र तद्रक्तश्च प्रजायते । निर्मलः शुद्धवीर्यस्तु ब्रह्मस्थानं प्रयाति च

sārabhūto rasastatra tadraktaśca prajāyate nirmalaḥ śuddhavīryastu brahmasthānaṁ prayāti ca

'The essential part of it becomes the vital fluid; from that, blood is produced. The pure, refined seed then rises to the seat of Brahma.'

Verse 95 (padma.2.53.95)

आकृष्टः स समानेन नीतस्तेनापि वायुना । स्थानं न लभते वीर्यं चंचलत्वेन वर्तते

ākṛṣṭaḥ sa samānena nītastenāpi vāyunā sthānaṁ na labhate vīryaṁ caṁcalatvena vartate

'Drawn by the samana breath, carried by that very wind, the seed finds no fixed place, but remains ever restless.'

Verse 96 (padma.2.53.96)

प्राणिनां हि कपालेषु कृमयः संति पंच वै । द्वावेतौ कर्णमूले तु नेत्रस्थाने ततः पुनः

prāṇināṁ hi kapāleṣu kṛmayaḥ saṁti paṁca vai dvāvetau karṇamūle tu netrasthāne tataḥ punaḥ

'In the skulls of living beings there dwell five worms indeed: two of them at the roots of the ears, and then again at the place of the eyes —'

Verse 97 (padma.2.53.97)

कनिष्ठांगुलिमानेन रक्तपुच्छाश्च दूतिके । नवनीतस्य वर्णेन कृष्णपुच्छा न संशयः

kaniṣṭhāṁgulimānena raktapucchāśca dūtike navanītasya varṇena kṛṣṇapucchā na saṁśayaḥ

'—of the size of the little finger, with red tails, O messenger; and, of the color of fresh butter, with black tails, without doubt.'

Verse 98 (padma.2.53.98)

तेषां नामापि भद्रे त्वं मत्तो निगदितं शृणु । पिंगली शृंखली नाम द्वौ कृमी कर्णमूलयोः

teṣāṁ nāmāpi bhadre tvaṁ matto nigaditaṁ śṛṇu piṁgalī śṛṁkhalī nāma dvau kṛmī karṇamūlayoḥ

'Hear from me too, gentle one, even their names: Pingali and Shrinkhali are the names of the two worms at the roots of the ears.'

Verse 99 (padma.2.53.99)

चपलः पिप्पलश्चैव द्वावेतौ नासिकाग्रयोः । शृंगली जंगली चान्यौ नेत्रयोरंतरस्थितौ

capalaḥ pippalaścaiva dvāvetau nāsikāgrayoḥ śṛṁgalī jaṁgalī cānyau netrayoraṁtarasthitau

'Chapala and Pippala are these two, at the tips of the nostrils; Shringali and Jangali, two others, dwell within the eyes.'

Verse 100 (padma.2.53.100)

कृमीणां शतपंचाशत्तादृग्भूता न संशयः । भालांतेवस्थिताः सर्वे राजिकायाः प्रमाणतः

kṛmīṇāṁ śatapaṁcāśattādṛgbhūtā na saṁśayaḥ bhālāṁtevasthitāḥ sarve rājikāyāḥ pramāṇataḥ

'Of such worms there are one hundred and fifty in number, without doubt; all of them dwell at the edge of the forehead, of the size of a mustard-seed.'

Verse 101 (padma.2.53.101)

कपालरोगिणः सर्वे विकुर्वंति न संशयः । केशद्वयं मुखे तस्य विद्यते शृणु दूतिके

kapālarogiṇaḥ sarve vikurvaṁti na saṁśayaḥ keśadvayaṁ mukhe tasya vidyate śṛṇu dūtike

'All of them, in one afflicted with disease of the skull, become disturbed, without doubt. Two hairs are present at its mouth — hear this, O messenger.'

Verse 102 (padma.2.53.102)

प्राणिनां संक्षयं विद्धि तत्क्षणे हि न संशयः । स्वस्थाने संस्थितस्यापि प्राजापत्यस्य वै मुखे

prāṇināṁ saṁkṣayaṁ viddhi tatkṣaṇe hi na saṁśayaḥ svasthāne saṁsthitasyāpi prājāpatyasya vai mukhe

'Know that this brings the immediate ruin of beings at that very instant, without doubt — even while it remains fixed in its own place, at the mouth of the Prajapati.'

Verse 103 (padma.2.53.103)

तद्वीर्यं रसरूपेण पतते नात्र संशयः । मुखेन पिबते वीर्यं तेन मत्तः प्रजायते

tadvīryaṁ rasarūpeṇa patate nātra saṁśayaḥ mukhena pibate vīryaṁ tena mattaḥ prajāyate

'That seed falls in the form of vital essence, without doubt; drawn in by its mouth, one becomes intoxicated by it.'

Verse 104 (padma.2.53.104)

तालुमध्यप्रदेशे च चंचलत्वेन वर्तते । इडा च पिंगला नाडी सुषुम्णाख्या च संस्थिता

tālumadhyapradeśe ca caṁcalatvena vartate iḍā ca piṁgalā nāḍī suṣumṇākhyā ca saṁsthitā

'It moves restlessly in the region of the middle of the palate, where the ida and pingala channels, and the one called sushumna, are established.'

Verse 105 (padma.2.53.105)

सुबलेनापि तस्यैव नाडिका जालपंजरे । कामकंडूर्भवेद्दूति सर्वेषां प्राणिनां किल

subalenāpi tasyaiva nāḍikā jālapaṁjare kāmakaṁḍūrbhaveddūti sarveṣāṁ prāṇināṁ kila

'By its own strength, within that very network of channels, arises the itch of desire, O messenger, indeed in all living beings.'

Verse 106 (padma.2.53.106)

पुंसश्च स्फुरते लिंगं नार्या योनिश्च दूतिके । स्त्रीपुंसौ संप्रमत्तौ तु व्रजतः संगमं ततः

puṁsaśca sphurate liṁgaṁ nāryā yoniśca dūtike strīpuṁsau saṁpramattau tu vrajataḥ saṁgamaṁ tataḥ

'The male organ throbs, and so too, O messenger, does the female's; then man and woman, both overcome, come together in union.'

Verse 107 (padma.2.53.107)

कायेन कायसंघृष्टिर्मैथुनेन हि जायते । क्षणमात्रं सुखं काये पुनः कंडूश्च तादृशी

kāyena kāyasaṁghṛṣṭirmaithunena hi jāyate kṣaṇamātraṁ sukhaṁ kāye punaḥ kaṁḍūśca tādṛśī

'Through intercourse, body rubs against body; for a mere instant there is pleasure in the body, and then that same itching returns once more.'

Verse 108 (padma.2.53.108)

सर्वत्र दृश्यते दूति भाव एवंविधः किल । व्रज त्वमात्मनः स्थानं नैवास्त्यत्र अपूर्वता

sarvatra dṛśyate dūti bhāva evaṁvidhaḥ kila vraja tvamātmanaḥ sthānaṁ naivāstyatra apūrvatā

'Everywhere, O messenger, this same nature is seen, indeed. Go now to your own place — there is nothing at all unprecedented here.'

अपूर्वं नास्ति मे किंचित्करोम्येव न संशयः

apūrvaṁ nāsti me kiṁcitkaromyeva na saṁśayaḥ

'There is nothing at all unprecedented for me to do here, without doubt.'
