Sukarma's Vision and the Way of Filial Devotion
Verse 1 (padma.2.62.1)
viṣṇuruvāca- kuṁḍalasyāśramaṁ gatvā satyadharma samākulam sukarmāṇaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā pitṛmātṛparāyaṇam
Vishnu said: Having gone to Kundala's hermitage, filled with true dharma, he then saw Sukarma, devoted wholly to his father and mother —
Verse 2 (padma.2.62.2)
śuśrūṣaṁtaṁ mahātmānaṁ gurūsatyaparākramam mahārūpaṁ mahātejaṁ mahājñānasamākulam
—that great soul, serving them, true and mighty in valor, of great form, great splendor, filled with great knowledge.
Verse 3 (padma.2.62.3)
mātāpitroḥ padāṁte tamupaviṣṭaṁ dadarśa saḥ mahābhaktyānvitaṁ śāṁtaṁ sarvajñānamahānidhim
He saw him seated at the very feet of his mother and father, filled with the greatest devotion, calm, a great treasury of all knowledge.
Verse 4 (padma.2.62.4)
kuṁḍalasyāpi putreṇa sukarmaṇā mahātmanā āgataṁ pippalaṁ dṛṣṭvā dvāradeśe mahāmatim
Seeing Pippala, that wise one, arrived at the doorway, Kundala's son, the great-souled Sukarma —
Verse 5 (padma.2.62.5)
āsanāttūrṇamutthāya abhyutthānaṁ kṛtaṁ punaḥ āgaccha tvaṁ mahābhāga vidyādhara mahāmate
—rose swiftly from his seat and again performed the rite of rising to receive him: 'Come, O blessed one, O vidyadhara, O most wise one.'
Verse 6 (padma.2.62.6)
āsanaṁ pādyamarghaṁ ca dadau tasmai mahāmatiḥ nirvighno'si mahāprājña kuśalena pravarttase
That wise one offered him a seat, water for his feet, and the guest-offering: 'Are you free of obstacles, O most wise one? Do you fare well?'
Verse 7 (padma.2.62.7)
nirāmayaṁ ca papraccha pippalaṁ taṁ samāgatam yasmādāgamanaṁ tedya tatsarvaṁ pravadāmyaham
He asked after the health of that Pippala who had arrived: 'For what reason have you come today? Tell me everything, and I shall respond fully.'
Verse 8 (padma.2.62.8)
varṣāṇāṁ ca sahasrāṇi trīṇi yāvattvayā tapaḥ taptameva mahābhāga surebhyaḥ prāptavānvaram
'For three thousand years you performed austerity, O blessed one, and from the gods you obtained a boon.'
Verse 9 (padma.2.62.9)
vaśyatvaṁ ca tvayā prāptaṁ kāmacārastathaiva ca tena matto na jānāsi garvamudvahase vṛthā
'You obtained the power of mastery, and freedom of movement at will as well; through that, intoxicated, you do not know yourself, and bear your pride in vain.'
Verse 10 (padma.2.62.10)
dṛṣṭvā te ceṣṭitaṁ sarvaṁ sārasena mahātmanā mamābhidhānaṁ kathitaṁ mama jñānamanuttamam
'Seeing all your doings, that great-souled crane spoke of my name and told you of my unsurpassed knowledge.'
Verse 11 (padma.2.62.11)
pippala uvāca- yosau māṁ sāraso vipra sarittīre prayuktavān sarvaṁ jñānaṁ vadenmāṁ hi sa tu kaḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ
Pippala said: 'That crane, O brahmin, who spoke to me on the riverbank, and told me you would explain all knowledge — who indeed is that lord, that master?'
Verse 12 (padma.2.62.12)
sukarmovāca- bhavaṁtamuktavānyo vai sarittīre tu sārasaḥ brahmāṇaṁ tvaṁ mahājñānaṁ taṁ viddhi parameśvaram
Sukarma said: 'That crane who spoke to you on the riverbank — know that he was Brahma himself, O one of great knowledge, the supreme lord.'
Verse 13 (padma.2.62.13)
anyatkiṁ pṛcchase brūhi tamevaṁ pravadāmyaham viṣṇuruvāca- evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā sukarmā nṛpanaṁdana
'What else do you ask? Tell me, and I shall answer accordingly.' Vishnu said: Thus addressed, that righteous soul, Sukarma, O prince —
Verse 14 (padma.2.62.14)
pippala uvāca- tvayi vaśyaṁ jagatsarvamiti śuśruma bhūtale tanme tvaṁ kautukaṁ vipra darśayasva prayatnataḥ
Pippala said: 'We have heard on this earth that the whole world is subject to your will; show me that wonder, O brahmin, with all effort.'
Verse 15 (padma.2.62.15)
paśya kautukamevādya tvaṁ vaśyāvaśyakāraṇam tamuvāca sa dharmātmā sukarmā pippalaṁ prati
'Behold this very day the wonder, the cause of what is and is not subject to control.' Thus spoke that righteous soul Sukarma to Pippala.
Verse 16 (padma.2.62.16)
atha sasmāra vai devānsukarmā pratyayāya vai iṁdrādyā lokapālāśca devāścāgnipurogamāḥ
Then, to give proof, Sukarma called to mind the gods; Indra and the other guardians of the world, the gods headed by Agni —
Verse 17 (padma.2.62.17)
samāgatāḥ samāhūtā nānā vidyādharāstathā sukarmāṇaṁ tataḥ procurdevāścāgnipurogamāḥ
—thus summoned, arrived, along with various vidyadharas; and the gods, headed by Agni, then said to Sukarma —
Verse 18 (padma.2.62.18)
kasmātsmṛtāstvayā vipra tatorthakāraṇaṁ vada sukarmovāca- ayameṣa susaṁprāpto vidyādharo hi pippalaḥ
'—"Why, O brahmin, have you called us to mind? Tell us the reason."' Sukarma said: 'Here is this vidyadhara Pippala, who has come to me —'
Verse 19 (padma.2.62.19)
māmevaṁ bhāṣate vipra vaśyāvaśyatvakāraṇam pratyayārthaṁ samāhūtā asyaiva ca mahātmanaḥ
'—he speaks to me thus of the cause of subjection and non-subjection; for the sake of proof, for this very great soul, I have summoned you.'
Verse 20 (padma.2.62.20)
svaṁsvaṁ sthānaṁ pragacchadhvamityuvāca surānprati tamūcuste tato devāḥ sukarmāṇaṁ mahāmatim
'You may now go, each to your own abode,' he said to the gods. Then those gods spoke to the wise Sukarma —
Verse 21 (padma.2.62.21)
'—"O brahmin, a sight of us does not go in vain, O excellent one. Choose a boon, may good be yours — whatever pleases your mind."'
Verse 22 (padma.2.62.22)
'—"That we shall give you, without doubt."' Thus spoke those excellent gods; and, bowing to them with devotion, that foremost of brahmins made his request —
Verse 23 (padma.2.62.23)
acalāṁ datta deveṁdrā suḥbhaktiṁ bhāvasaṁyutām mātāpitrośca me nityaṁ tadvai varamanuttamam
'—"Grant me, O lords of the gods, unwavering devotion, joined with true feeling, ever toward my mother and father — that alone is the most excellent boon I ask."'
Verse 24 (padma.2.62.24)
pitā me vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ prayātvetadvarottamam tadvanmātā ca deveśā varamanyaṁ na yācaye
'—"May my father go to Vishnu's own realm — this is my finest boon; and may my mother too, O lords of the gods — I ask for no other boon."'
Verse 25 (padma.2.62.25)
devā ūcuḥ- pitṛbhaktosi vipreṁdra bhaktyā tava vayaṁ dvija sukarmañchrūyatāṁ vākyaṁ prītyā yuktā sadaiva te
The gods said: 'You are devoted to your parents, O foremost of brahmins; by your devotion, O brahmin, we are pleased. Hear our word, Sukarma: may joy ever be yours.'
Verse 26 (padma.2.62.26)
evamuktvā gatā devāḥ svarlokaṁ nṛpanaṁdana sarvamaiśvaryametena tasyāgre paridarśitam
Having spoken thus, O prince, the gods went to their heavenly realm; and by this, all his lordship had been displayed before him.
Verse 27 (padma.2.62.27)
dṛṣṭaṁ tu pippalenāpi kautukaṁ ca mahādbhutam tamuvāca sa dharmātmā pippalaṁ kuṁḍalātmajam
Pippala too beheld this great and wondrous marvel; and that righteous son of Kundala spoke to Pippala —
Verse 28 (padma.2.62.28)
arvācīnaṁ tvidaṁ rūpaṁ parācīnaṁ ca kīdṛśam prabhāvamubhayoścaiva vadasva vadatāṁ vara
Pippala said: 'This form is the near sense — but what is the further sense? Tell me the power of both, O best of speakers.'
Verse 29 (padma.2.62.29)
sukarmovāca- parācīnasya rūpasya liṁgameva vadāmi te yenalokāḥ pramodaṁte iṁdrādyāḥ sacarācarāḥ
Sukarma said: 'I shall tell you the very mark of the transcendent form, by which the worlds — Indra and the rest, all moving and unmoving beings — take delight.'
Verse 30 (padma.2.62.30)
ayameva jagannāthaḥ sarvago vyāpakaḥ prabhuḥ asya rūpaṁ na dṛṣṭaṁ hi kenāpyeva hi yoginā
'This same one alone is the lord of the world, all-pervading, the all-encompassing master; his form has never been seen by any yogi at all.'
Verse 31 (padma.2.62.31)
śrutireva vadatyevaṁ taṁ vaktuṁ śaṁkiteva sā apāṇipādanāsaśca akarṇo mukhavarjitaḥ
The very Shruti itself speaks thus, as if hesitant to describe him: he is without hands or feet or nose, without ears, devoid of mouth —
Verse 32 (padma.2.62.32)
sarvaṁ paśyati vai karma kṛtaṁ trailokyavāsinām teṣāmuktamakarṇaśca sa śṛṇoti susākṣyadaḥ
—yet he sees all the deeds done by the dwellers of the three worlds; and, though without ears, he hears what they say, that true witness to all.
Verse 33 (padma.2.62.33)
gatihīno vrajetsopi sa hi sarvatra dṛśyate pāṇihīnopi gṛhṇāti pādahīnaḥ pradhāvati
Though without means of movement, he still goes forth, and is seen everywhere; though without hands, he grasps; though without feet, he runs swiftly.
Verse 34 (padma.2.62.34)
sarvatra dṛśyate vipra vyāpakaḥ pādavarjitaḥ yaṁ na paśyaṁti deveṁdrā munayastattvadarśinaḥ
He is seen everywhere, O brahmin, all-pervading, though without feet; whom even the lords of the gods and the sages who behold truth itself cannot see —
Verse 35 (padma.2.62.35)
sa ca paśyati tānsarvānsatyāsatyapade sthitān vyāpakaṁ vimalaṁ siddhaṁ siddhidaṁ sarvanāyakam
—yet he sees all of them, established in the states of the real and the unreal; all-pervading, spotless, perfect, the bestower of perfection, the leader of all.
Verse 36 (padma.2.62.36)
yaṁ jānāti mahāyogī vyāso dharmārthakovidaḥ tejomūrtiḥ sa cākāśamekavarṇamanaṁtakam
Whom the great yogi Vyasa, learned in dharma and artha, knows — a form of pure splendor, like the sky, of a single hue, without end.
Verse 37 (padma.2.62.37)
tadetannirmalaṁ rūpaṁ śrutirākhyāti niścitam vyāsaścaiva hi jānāti mārkaṁḍeyaśca tatpadam
This very spotless form the Shruti proclaims with certainty; and Vyasa indeed knows it, and Markandeya knows that state.
Verse 38 (padma.2.62.38)
arvācīnaṁ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣvaikāgramānasaḥ yadā saṁhṛtya bhūtātmā svayamekaḥ pragacchati
I shall tell of the near sense — listen with a one-pointed mind. When, having withdrawn all beings into himself, the Self of all beings goes forth alone —
Verse 39 (padma.2.62.39)
apsu śayyāṁ samāsthāya śeṣabhogāsanasthitaḥ tamāśritya svapityeko bahukālaṁ janārdanaḥ
—establishing his couch upon the waters, seated upon the coiled form of Shesha, taking refuge in him, Janardana sleeps alone for a long age.
Verse 40 (padma.2.62.40)
jalāṁdhakārasaṁtapto mārkaṁḍeyo mahāmuniḥ sthānamicchansa yogātmā nirviṇṇo bhramaṇena saḥ
The great sage Markandeya, tormented by the darkness of the waters, that yogi soul, seeking some resting place, weary from his wandering —
Verse 41 (padma.2.62.41)
bhramamāṇaḥ sa dadṛśe śeṣaparyaṁkaśāyinam sūryakoṭipratīkāśaṁ divyābharaṇabhūṣitam
—wandering thus, beheld him who lay upon the couch of Shesha, radiant as ten million suns, adorned with divine ornaments.
Verse 42 (padma.2.62.42)
divyamālyāṁbaradharaṁ sarvavyāpinamīśvaram yoganidrā gataṁ kāṁtaṁ śaṁkhacakragadādharam
—wearing divine garlands and garments, all-pervading, the very Ishvara, gone into yogic sleep, lovely, bearing conch, discus, and mace.
Verse 43 (padma.2.62.43)
ekā nārī mahābhāgā kṛṣṇāṁjanacayopamā daṁṣṭrākarālavadanā bhīmarūpā dvijottama
O foremost of brahmins, there was one woman, of great majesty, dark as a mass of collyrium, her face fearsome with great fangs, terrible in form.
Verse 44 (padma.2.62.44)
tayoktosau muniśreṣṭho mā bhairiti mahāmuniḥ padmapatraṁ suvistīrṇaṁ paṁcayojanamāyatam
By her that foremost of sages, that great muni, was told: 'Fear not' — and a broad lotus leaf, extending five yojanas —
Verse 45 (padma.2.62.45)
tasminpatre mahādevyā mārkaṇḍeyo niveśitaḥ keśave sati suptepi nāstyatra ca bhayaṁ tava
—upon that leaf, by the great goddess, Markandeya was placed: 'Even while Keshava lies asleep, there is no fear for you here.'
Verse 46 (padma.2.62.46)
tāmuvāca sa yogīṁdra kā tvaṁ bhavasi bhāmini asminvinirjite caikā bhavatī paribṛṁhitā
That lord of yogis said to her: 'Who are you, lovely one? Alone here, amid all this dissolved world, you stand supreme and vast.'
Verse 47 (padma.2.62.47)
pṛṣṭaivaṁ muninā devī sādaraṁ prāha bhūsura nāgabhogāṁkaparyaṁke sa yaḥ svapiti keśavaḥ
Thus asked by the sage, the goddess, O earthly god, answered him respectfully: 'He who sleeps here upon the couch formed by the serpent's coils, Keshava —'
Verse 48 (padma.2.62.48)
asyāhaṁ vaiṣṇavī śaktiḥ kālarātririhocyate māmevaṁ viddhi vipreṁdra sarvamāyāsamanvitām
'—of him I am the Vaishnavi Shakti, called here Kalaratri. Know me thus, O foremost of brahmins, as one endowed with all illusion.'
Verse 49 (padma.2.62.49)
mahāmāyā purāṇeṣu jaganmohāya kathyate ityuktvā sā gatā devī aṁtardhānaṁ hi pippalaḥ
'In the Puranas I am spoken of as Mahamaya, for the delusion of the world.' Having said this, that goddess vanished, O Pippala.
Verse 50 (padma.2.62.50)
devyāmanugatāyāṁ tu mārkaṁḍeyasya paśyataḥ tasya nābhyāṁ samutpannaṁ paṁkajaṁ hāṭakaprabham
When the goddess had thus departed, before the very eyes of Markandeya, from his navel there arose a lotus, radiant as gold.
Verse 51 (padma.2.62.51)
tasmājjajñe mahātejā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ tasmādvijajñire lokāḥ sarve sthāvarajaṁgamāḥ
From that lotus was born the greatly resplendent Brahma, grandfather of all worlds; and from him were born all the worlds, both moving and unmoving.
Verse 52 (padma.2.62.52)
iṁdrādyā lokapālāśca devāścāgnipurogamāḥ arvācīnaṁ svarūpaṁ tu darśitaṁ hi mayā nṛpa
Indra and the other guardians of the world, the gods headed by Agni — all this, O king, I have shown you as the near sense, the manifest form.
Verse 53 (padma.2.62.53)
This form is the manifest, near form; the transcendent one is without support of any kind. When he shows forth a body, then they too take on bodily form.
Verse 54 (padma.2.62.54)
brahmādyāḥ sarvalokāśca arvācīnā hi pippala arvācīnā amī lokā ye bhavaṁti jagattraye
Brahma and all other worlds are indeed of the near, manifest kind, O Pippala; manifest, near, are all these worlds that exist in the three realms.
Verse 55 (padma.2.62.55)
parācīnaḥ sa bhūtātmā yaṁ supaśyaṁti yoginaḥ mokṣarūpaṁ paraṁ sthānaṁ parabrahmasvarūpakam
That transcendent Self of all beings, whom the yogis truly behold — the very form of liberation, the supreme abode, the very nature of the Supreme Brahman —
Verse 56 (padma.2.62.56)
avyaktamakṣaraṁ haṁsaṁ śuddhaṁ siddhisamanvitam parācīnasya yadrūpaṁ vidyādhara tavāgrataḥ
—unmanifest, imperishable, the very Hamsa, pure, endowed with perfection — this, O vidyadhara, is the form of the transcendent, as I set it before you.
Verse 57 (padma.2.62.57)
sarvameva mayā khyātamanyatkiṁ te vadāmyaham pippala uvāca- kasmādetanmahājñānamudbhūtaṁ tava suvrata
'All has now been told by me — what else shall I tell you?' Pippala said: 'From what source, O one of good vows, has this great knowledge arisen in you?'
Verse 58 (padma.2.62.58)
arvācīnagatiṁ vidvānparācīnagatiṁ tathā trailokyasya paraṁ jñānaṁ tvayyevaṁ parivartate
'You are learned in the way of the near and the way of the further alike; the supreme knowledge of the three worlds dwells thus fully within you.'
Verse 59 (padma.2.62.59)
tapaso naiva paśyāmi parāṁ niṣṭhāṁ hi suvrata yajanaṁyājanaṁtīrthaṁtapovākṛtavānasi
