Verse 1 (padma.2.67.1)

ययातिरुवाच । अस्मद्भाग्यप्रसंगेन भवतो दर्शनं मम । संजातं शक्रसंवाह एतच्छ्रेयो ममातुलम्

yayātiruvāca asmadbhāgyaprasaṁgena bhavato darśanaṁ mama saṁjātaṁ śakrasaṁvāha etacchreyo mamātulam

Yayati said: "O charioteer of Shakra! Through the working of my own good fortune, this sight of you has come to me — this is my incomparable blessing."

Verse 2 (padma.2.67.2)

मानवा मर्त्यलोके च पापं कुर्वंति दारुणम् । तेषां कर्मविपाकं च मातले वद सांप्रतम्

mānavā martyaloke ca pāpaṁ kurvaṁti dāruṇam teṣāṁ karmavipākaṁ ca mātale vada sāṁpratam

"In the world of mortals, men commit terrible sins. Tell me now, Matali, the fruit that ripens from their deeds."

Verse 3 (padma.2.67.3)

मातलिरुवाच । श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि पापाचारस्य लक्षणम् । श्रुते सति महज्ज्ञानमत्रलोके प्रजायते

mātaliruvāca śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi pāpācārasya lakṣaṇam śrute sati mahajjñānamatraloke prajāyate

Matali said: "Listen, I shall tell you the marks of sinful conduct; upon hearing it, great knowledge arises in this world."

Verse 4 (padma.2.67.4)

वेदनिंदां प्रकुर्वंति ब्रह्माचारस्य कुत्सनम् । महापातकमेवापि ज्ञातव्यं ज्ञानपंडितैः

vedaniṁdāṁ prakurvaṁti brahmācārasya kutsanam mahāpātakamevāpi jñātavyaṁ jñānapaṁḍitaiḥ

"Those who revile the Vedas and denounce the conduct of Brahman — the wise should know this too as a great sin."

Verse 5 (padma.2.67.5)

साधूनामपि सर्वेषां यः पीडां हि समाचरेत् । महापातकमेवापि प्रायश्चित्ते न हि व्रजेत्

sādhūnāmapi sarveṣāṁ yaḥ pīḍāṁ hi samācaret mahāpātakamevāpi prāyaścitte na hi vrajet

"Whoever inflicts suffering upon all virtuous men — that too is a great sin, for which no penance can bring release."

Verse 6 (padma.2.67.6)

कुलाचारं परित्यज्य अन्याचारं व्रजंति च । एतच्च पातकं घोरं कथितं कृत्यवेदिभिः

kulācāraṁ parityajya anyācāraṁ vrajaṁti ca etacca pātakaṁ ghoraṁ kathitaṁ kṛtyavedibhiḥ

"Those who abandon their family's traditional practice and adopt other ways — this too has been declared a grievous sin by those versed in sacred rites."

Verse 7 (padma.2.67.7)

मातापित्रोश्च यो निंदां ताडनं भगिनीषु च । पितृस्वसृनिंदनं च तदेव पातकं ध्रुवम्

mātāpitrośca yo niṁdāṁ tāḍanaṁ bhaginīṣu ca pitṛsvasṛniṁdanaṁ ca tadeva pātakaṁ dhruvam

"Whoever reviles his mother and father, strikes his sisters, or reviles his father's sister — that indeed is certainly a sin."

Verse 8 (padma.2.67.8)

संप्राप्ते श्राद्धकालेपि पंचक्रोशांतरेस्थितम् । जामातरं परित्यज्य तथा च दुहितुः सुतम्

saṁprāpte śrāddhakālepi paṁcakrośāṁtaresthitam jāmātaraṁ parityajya tathā ca duhituḥ sutam

"Even when the time for the shraddha rite arrives, if one neglects a son-in-law living within five krosha, or likewise a daughter's son,"

Verse 9 (padma.2.67.9)

स्वसारं चैव स्वस्रीयं परित्यज्य प्रवर्तते । कामात्क्रोधाद्भयाद्वापि अन्यं भोजयते यदा

svasāraṁ caiva svasrīyaṁ parityajya pravartate kāmātkrodhādbhayādvāpi anyaṁ bhojayate yadā

"and passes over one's own sister and her son, and out of desire, anger, or fear feeds someone else instead —"

Verse 10 (padma.2.67.10)

पितरो नैव भुंजंति देवाश्चैव न भुंजते । एतच्च पातकं तस्य पितृघातसमं कृतम्

pitaro naiva bhuṁjaṁti devāścaiva na bhuṁjate etacca pātakaṁ tasya pitṛghātasamaṁ kṛtam

"then neither the ancestors nor the gods partake of that offering; this sin he has committed is equal to the killing of one's own ancestors."

Verse 11 (padma.2.67.11)

दानकालेपि संप्राप्ते आगते ब्राह्मणे किल । भूरिदानं परित्यज्य कतिभ्यो हि प्रदीयते

dānakālepi saṁprāpte āgate brāhmaṇe kila bhūridānaṁ parityajya katibhyo hi pradīyate

"Likewise, when the time for giving has come and brahmins have arrived, if one forgoes abundant giving and gives to only a select few,"

Verse 12 (padma.2.67.12)

एकस्मै दीयते दानमन्येभ्योपि न दीयते । एतच्च पातकं घोरं दानभ्रंशकरं स्मृतम्

ekasmai dīyate dānamanyebhyopi na dīyate etacca pātakaṁ ghoraṁ dānabhraṁśakaraṁ smṛtam

"giving to one and not to the others — this too is recorded as a grievous sin, one that ruins the merit of giving."

Verse 13 (padma.2.67.13)

यजमानगृहे सेवा संस्थितान्ब्राह्मणान्निजान् । परित्यज्य हि यद्दानं न दानस्य च लक्षणम्

yajamānagṛhe sevā saṁsthitānbrāhmaṇānnijān parityajya hi yaddānaṁ na dānasya ca lakṣaṇam

"Whatever gift is given while passing over one's own brahmins who stand in service in the patron's household — that is no true mark of giving."

Verse 14 (padma.2.67.14)

समाश्रितं हि यं विप्रं धर्माचारसमन्वितम् । सर्वोपायैः सुपुष्येत्तं सुदानैर्बहुभिर्नृप

samāśritaṁ hi yaṁ vipraṁ dharmācārasamanvitam sarvopāyaiḥ supuṣyettaṁ sudānairbahubhirnṛpa

"O king, the brahmin who has taken refuge with one and is endowed with righteous conduct should be nourished by every means, with many good gifts."

Verse 15 (padma.2.67.15)

न गणयेन्मूर्खं विद्वांसं पोष्यो विप्रः सदा भवेत् । सर्वैः पुण्यैः समायुक्तं सुदानैर्बहुभिर्नृप

na gaṇayenmūrkhaṁ vidvāṁsaṁ poṣyo vipraḥ sadā bhavet sarvaiḥ puṇyaiḥ samāyuktaṁ sudānairbahubhirnṛpa

"One should not weigh whether he is foolish or learned — the brahmin who depends on one should always be sustained, endowed with every merit, through many good gifts, O king."

Verse 16 (padma.2.67.16)

तं समभ्यर्च्य विद्वांसं प्राप्तं विप्रं सदार्हयेत् । तं हि त्यक्त्वा ददेद्दानमन्यस्मै ब्राह्मणाय वै

taṁ samabhyarcya vidvāṁsaṁ prāptaṁ vipraṁ sadārhayet taṁ hi tyaktvā dadeddānamanyasmai brāhmaṇāya vai

"That learned brahmin who has arrived should always be honored and worshipped; but if he is set aside and the gift given instead to some other brahmin—"

Verse 17 (padma.2.67.17)

दत्तं हुतं भवेत्तस्य निष्फलं नात्र संशयः । ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रश्चापि चतुर्थकः

dattaṁ hutaṁ bhavettasya niṣphalaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdraścāpi caturthakaḥ

"then whatever he gives and offers becomes fruitless, there is no doubt of it. As for the brahmin, the kshatriya, the vaishya, and the fourth, the shudra —"

Verse 18 (padma.2.67.18)

पुण्यकालेषु सर्वेषु संश्रितं पूजयेद्द्विजम् । मूर्खं वापि हि विद्वांसं तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु

puṇyakāleṣu sarveṣu saṁśritaṁ pūjayeddvijam mūrkhaṁ vāpi hi vidvāṁsaṁ tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

"At every auspicious occasion, one should honor the dependent twice-born, whether he is foolish or learned; hear now the merit that comes from this."

Verse 19 (padma.2.67.19)

अश्वमेधस्य यज्ञस्य फलं तस्य प्रजायते । कस्माद्धिकारणाद्राजञ्छक्यं प्राप्य न कारयेत्

aśvamedhasya yajñasya phalaṁ tasya prajāyate kasmāddhikāraṇādrājañchakyaṁ prāpya na kārayet

"He obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice. Why then, O king, would one who has the means not perform this?"

Verse 20 (padma.2.67.20)

अन्यो विप्रः समायातस्तत्कालं श्राद्धकर्मणि । उभौ तौ पूजयेत्तत्र भोजनाच्छादनैस्ततः

anyo vipraḥ samāyātastatkālaṁ śrāddhakarmaṇi ubhau tau pūjayettatra bhojanācchādanaistataḥ

"If another brahmin happens to arrive at that same time during a shraddha rite, both should be honored there with food and garments."

Verse 21 (padma.2.67.21)

तांबूलदक्षिणाभिश्च पितरस्तस्य हर्षिताः । श्राद्धभुक्ताय दातव्यं सदा दानं च दक्षिणा

tāṁbūladakṣiṇābhiśca pitarastasya harṣitāḥ śrāddhabhuktāya dātavyaṁ sadā dānaṁ ca dakṣiṇā

"With betel-leaf and sacrificial fee, his ancestors are made glad; to the one who partakes of the shraddha-offering, a gift and fee should always be given."

Verse 22 (padma.2.67.22)

न ददेच्छ्राद्धकर्ता यो गोहत्यादि समं भवेत् । द्वावेतौ पूजयेत्तस्माच्छ्रद्धया नृपसत्तम

na dadecchrāddhakartā yo gohatyādi samaṁ bhavet dvāvetau pūjayettasmācchraddhayā nṛpasattama

"The one who performs the shraddha but does not give the fee becomes equal to a slayer of a cow; therefore, O best of kings, both should be honored with faith."

Verse 23 (padma.2.67.23)

निर्द्धनत्व प्रभावाद्वै तमेकं हि प्रपूजयेत् । व्यतीपातेपि संप्राप्ते वैधृतौ च नृपोत्तम

nirddhanatva prabhāvādvai tamekaṁ hi prapūjayet vyatīpātepi saṁprāpte vaidhṛtau ca nṛpottama

"But owing to poverty, if both cannot be honored, then one alone should be duly worshipped. Likewise, O best of kings, when the inauspicious conjunctions of Vyatipata or Vaidhriti occur,"

Verse 24 (padma.2.67.24)

अमावास्यां तथा राजन्क्षयाहे परपक्षके । श्राद्धमेवं प्रकर्तव्यं ब्राह्मणादि त्रिवर्णकैः

amāvāsyāṁ tathā rājankṣayāhe parapakṣake śrāddhamevaṁ prakartavyaṁ brāhmaṇādi trivarṇakaiḥ

"or on the new-moon day, O king, or on a lost lunar day in the dark fortnight — the shraddha should thus be performed by the three twice-born classes beginning with the brahmins."

Verse 25 (padma.2.67.25)

यज्ञे तथा महाराज ऋत्विजश्च प्रकारयेत् । तथा विप्राः प्रकर्तव्याः श्राद्धदानाय सर्वदा

yajñe tathā mahārāja ṛtvijaśca prakārayet tathā viprāḥ prakartavyāḥ śrāddhadānāya sarvadā

"Likewise, O great king, priests should be engaged for a sacrifice; and brahmins should always be arranged for the giving of gifts at a shraddha."

Verse 26 (padma.2.67.26)

अविज्ञातः प्रकर्तव्यो ब्राह्मणो नैव जानता । यस्यापि ज्ञायते वंशः कुलं त्रिपुरुषं तथा

avijñātaḥ prakartavyo brāhmaṇo naiva jānatā yasyāpi jñāyate vaṁśaḥ kulaṁ tripuruṣaṁ tathā

"An unfamiliar brahmin should not be engaged by one who does not know him. Rather, one whose lineage is known, whose family for three generations —"

Verse 27 (padma.2.67.27)

आचारश्च तथा राजंस्तं विप्रं सन्निमंत्रयेत् । कुलं न ज्ञायते यस्य आचारेण विचारयेत्

ācāraśca tathā rājaṁstaṁ vipraṁ sannimaṁtrayet kulaṁ na jñāyate yasya ācāreṇa vicārayet

"and whose conduct is known, O king — that brahmin should be invited. One whose family is unknown should be judged by his conduct."

Verse 28 (padma.2.67.28)

श्राद्धदाने प्रकर्तव्ये विशुद्धो मूर्ख एव हि । अविज्ञातो भवेद्विप्रो वेदवेदांगपारगः

śrāddhadāne prakartavye viśuddho mūrkha eva hi avijñāto bhavedvipro vedavedāṁgapāragaḥ

"When performing the gift-giving at a shraddha, even a fool of pure conduct is preferable to an unknown brahmin — even one versed in the Vedas and their auxiliary texts."

Verse 29 (padma.2.67.29)

श्राद्धदानं प्रकर्तव्यं तस्माद्विप्रं निमंत्रयेत् । आतिथ्यं तु प्रकर्तव्यमपूर्वं नृपसत्तम

śrāddhadānaṁ prakartavyaṁ tasmādvipraṁ nimaṁtrayet ātithyaṁ tu prakartavyamapūrvaṁ nṛpasattama

"Therefore one should invite such a brahmin and perform the shraddha-gift. But, O best of kings, hospitality should also be shown to an unexpected guest."

Verse 30 (padma.2.67.30)

अन्यथा कुरुते पापी स याति नरकं ध्रुवम् । तस्माद्विप्रः प्रकर्तव्यो दाने श्राद्धे च पर्वसु

anyathā kurute pāpī sa yāti narakaṁ dhruvam tasmādvipraḥ prakartavyo dāne śrāddhe ca parvasu

"Whoever acts otherwise is a sinner and surely goes to hell. Therefore a brahmin should always be engaged for gift-giving, for the shraddha rite, and on sacred occasions."

Verse 31 (padma.2.67.31)

आदौ परीक्षयेद्विप्रं श्राद्धे दाने प्रकारयेत् । नाश्नंति तस्य वै गेहे पितरो विप्रवर्जिताः

ādau parīkṣayedvipraṁ śrāddhe dāne prakārayet nāśnaṁti tasya vai gehe pitaro vipravarjitāḥ

"One should first examine the brahmin and only then arrange the gift at the shraddha; for the ancestors do not eat in the house of one whose shraddha lacks a worthy brahmin."

Verse 32 (padma.2.67.32)

शापं दत्त्वा ततो यांति श्राद्धाद्विप्रविवर्जितात् । महापापी भवेत्सोपि ब्रह्मणः सदृशो यदि

śāpaṁ dattvā tato yāṁti śrāddhādvipravivarjitāt mahāpāpī bhavetsopi brahmaṇaḥ sadṛśo yadi

"The ancestors, having pronounced a curse, depart from a shraddha lacking a worthy brahmin; even if the performer is himself brahmin-like, he becomes a great sinner."

Verse 33 (padma.2.67.33)

पैत्राचारं परित्यज्य यो वर्तेत नरोत्तम । महापापी स विज्ञेयः सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृतः

paitrācāraṁ parityajya yo varteta narottama mahāpāpī sa vijñeyaḥ sarvadharmabahiṣkṛtaḥ

"O best of men, whoever forsakes the ancestral custom and conducts himself otherwise should be known as a great sinner, cast out from all dharma."

Verse 34 (padma.2.67.34)

ये त्यजंति शिवाचारं वैष्णवं भोगदायकम् । निंदंति ब्राह्मणं धर्मं विज्ञेयाः पापवर्द्धनाः

ye tyajaṁti śivācāraṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ bhogadāyakam niṁdaṁti brāhmaṇaṁ dharmaṁ vijñeyāḥ pāpavarddhanāḥ

"Those who abandon the worship of Shiva or the Vaishnava practice that grants enjoyment, and revile the brahminical dharma — they should be known as increasers of sin."

Verse 35 (padma.2.67.35)

ये त्यजंति शिवाचारं शिवभक्तान्द्विषंति च । हरिं निंदंति ये पापा ब्रह्मद्वेषकराः सदा

ye tyajaṁti śivācāraṁ śivabhaktāndviṣaṁti ca hariṁ niṁdaṁti ye pāpā brahmadveṣakarāḥ sadā

"Those who abandon Shiva-worship and hate the devotees of Shiva, and those sinners who revile Hari — such people are forever the haters of the Supreme."

Verse 36 (padma.2.67.36)

आचारनिंदका ये ते महापातककृत्तमाः । आद्यं पूज्यं परं ज्ञानं पुण्यं भागवतं तथा

ācāraniṁdakā ye te mahāpātakakṛttamāḥ ādyaṁ pūjyaṁ paraṁ jñānaṁ puṇyaṁ bhāgavataṁ tathā

"Those who revile such observance are the very worst committers of grave sin. Now hear of that primeval, worshipful, supreme knowledge — the sacred Bhagavata, and likewise —"

Verse 37 (padma.2.67.37)

वैष्णवं हरिवंशं वा मत्स्यं वा कूर्ममेव च । पाद्मं वा ये पूजयंति तेषां श्रेयो वदाम्यहम्

vaiṣṇavaṁ harivaṁśaṁ vā matsyaṁ vā kūrmameva ca pādmaṁ vā ye pūjayaṁti teṣāṁ śreyo vadāmyaham

"the Vaishnava Purana, or the Harivamsha, or the Matsya, or the Kurma, or the Padma — whoever honors these, I shall now tell you their good fortune."

Verse 38 (padma.2.67.38)

प्रत्यक्षं तेन वै देवः पूजितो मधुसूदनः । तस्मात्प्रपूजयेज्ज्ञानं वैष्णवं विष्णुवल्लभम्

pratyakṣaṁ tena vai devaḥ pūjito madhusūdanaḥ tasmātprapūjayejjñānaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ viṣṇuvallabham

"By this very act, the god Madhusudana himself is directly worshipped. Therefore one should duly honor the Vaishnava knowledge that is dear to Vishnu."

Verse 39 (padma.2.67.39)

देवस्थाने च नित्यं वै वैष्णवं पुस्तकं नृप । तस्मिन्प्रपूजिते विप्र पूजितः कमलापतिः

devasthāne ca nityaṁ vai vaiṣṇavaṁ pustakaṁ nṛpa tasminprapūjite vipra pūjitaḥ kamalāpatiḥ

"O king, a Vaishnava scripture should always be kept in the temple; O brahmin, when it is duly worshipped, the Lord of Lakshmi himself is worshipped."

Verse 40 (padma.2.67.40)

असंपूज्य हरेर्ज्ञानं ये गायंति लिखंति च । अज्ञाय तत्प्रयच्छंति शृण्वंत्युच्चारयंति च

asaṁpūjya harerjñānaṁ ye gāyaṁti likhaṁti ca ajñāya tatprayacchaṁti śṛṇvaṁtyuccārayaṁti ca

"Those who, without first worshipping it, sing or copy out the knowledge of Hari, or give it away in ignorance, or hear and recite it carelessly —"

Verse 41 (padma.2.67.41)

विक्रीडंति च लोभेन कुज्ञान नियमेन च । असंस्कृतप्रदेशेषु यथेष्टं स्थापयंति च

vikrīḍaṁti ca lobhena kujñāna niyamena ca asaṁskṛtapradeśeṣu yatheṣṭaṁ sthāpayaṁti ca

"or who toy with it out of greed, through faulty observance, or who set it down carelessly in unconsecrated places —"

Verse 42 (padma.2.67.42)

हरिज्ञानं यथाक्षेमं प्रत्यक्षाच्च प्रकाशयेत् । अधीते च समर्थश्च यः प्रमादं करोति च

harijñānaṁ yathākṣemaṁ pratyakṣācca prakāśayet adhīte ca samarthaśca yaḥ pramādaṁ karoti ca

"The knowledge of Hari should be kept openly, with due care for its safety. Whoever, though capable, is careless in studying it,"

Verse 43 (padma.2.67.43)

अशुचिश्चाशुचौ स्थाने यः प्रवक्ति शृणोति च । इति सर्वं समासेन ज्ञाननिंदा समं स्मृतम्

aśuciścāśucau sthāne yaḥ pravakti śṛṇoti ca iti sarvaṁ samāsena jñānaniṁdā samaṁ smṛtam

"or who, while himself impure, speaks or hears it in an impure place — all this, in brief, is reckoned equal to the reviling of sacred knowledge."

Verse 44 (padma.2.67.44)

गुरुपूजामकृत्वैव यः शास्त्रं श्रोतुमिच्छति । न करोति च शुश्रूषामाज्ञाभंगं च भावतः

gurupūjāmakṛtvaiva yaḥ śāstraṁ śrotumicchati na karoti ca śuśrūṣāmājñābhaṁgaṁ ca bhāvataḥ

"Whoever wishes to hear the scriptures without first honoring the guru, who does not render him service, and who in his heart breaks his command,"

Verse 45 (padma.2.67.45)

नाभिनंदति तद्वाक्यमुत्तरं संप्रयच्छति । गुरुकर्मणि साध्ये च तदुपेक्षां करोति च

nābhinaṁdati tadvākyamuttaraṁ saṁprayacchati gurukarmaṇi sādhye ca tadupekṣāṁ karoti ca

"who does not welcome his guru's words but answers back, and who neglects a task that ought to be done for the guru —"

Verse 46 (padma.2.67.46)

गुरुमार्तमशक्तं च विदेशं प्रस्थितं तथा । अरिभिः परिभूतं वा यः संत्यजति पापकृत्

gurumārtamaśaktaṁ ca videśaṁ prasthitaṁ tathā aribhiḥ paribhūtaṁ vā yaḥ saṁtyajati pāpakṛt

"The sinner who abandons his guru when he is afflicted, or helpless, or has set out for a foreign land, or has been overpowered by enemies —"

Verse 47 (padma.2.67.47)

पठमानं पुराणं तु तस्य पापं वदाम्यहम् । कुंभीपाके वसेत्तावद्यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश

paṭhamānaṁ purāṇaṁ tu tasya pāpaṁ vadāmyaham kuṁbhīpāke vasettāvadyāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

"while the guru is still reciting the Purana to him — I shall tell you his sin: he shall dwell in the Kumbhipaka hell for as long as fourteen Indras reign."

Verse 48 (padma.2.67.48)

पठमानं गुरुं यो हि उपेक्षयति पापधीः । तस्यापि पातकं घोरं चिरं नरकदायकम्

paṭhamānaṁ guruṁ yo hi upekṣayati pāpadhīḥ tasyāpi pātakaṁ ghoraṁ ciraṁ narakadāyakam

"Whoever, sinful of mind, is negligent toward his guru while he is teaching — his sin too is terrible, one that grants a long stay in hell."

Verse 49 (padma.2.67.49)

भार्यापुत्रेषु मित्रेषु यश्चावज्ञां करोति च । इत्येतत्पातकं ज्ञेयं गुरुनिन्दासमं महत्

bhāryāputreṣu mitreṣu yaścāvajñāṁ karoti ca ityetatpātakaṁ jñeyaṁ gurunindāsamaṁ mahat

"Whoever shows disrespect toward the guru's wife, sons, or friends — this sin, too, should be known as great, equal to reviling the guru himself."

Verse 50 (padma.2.67.50)

ब्रह्महा स्वर्णस्तेयी च सुरापी गुरुतल्पगः । महापातकिनश्चैते तत्संयोगी च पंचमः

brahmahā svarṇasteyī ca surāpī gurutalpagaḥ mahāpātakinaścaite tatsaṁyogī ca paṁcamaḥ

"The killer of a brahmin, the thief of gold, the drinker of liquor, and the one who violates his guru's bed — these are the great sinners; and the fifth is he who keeps company with them."

Verse 51 (padma.2.67.51)

क्रोधाद्द्वेषाद्भयाल्लोभाद्ब्राह्मणस्य विशेषतः । मर्मातिकृन्तको यश्च ब्रह्मघ्नः स प्रकीर्तितः

krodhāddveṣādbhayāllobhādbrāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥ marmātikṛntako yaśca brahmaghnaḥ sa prakīrtitaḥ

"Whoever, out of anger, hatred, fear, or greed, deeply wounds a brahmin at his vital point — he is proclaimed a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 52 (padma.2.67.52)

ब्राह्मणं यः समाहूय याचमानमकिंचनम् । पश्चान्नास्तीति यो ब्रूयात्स च वै ब्रह्महा नृप

brāhmaṇaṁ yaḥ samāhūya yācamānamakiṁcanam paścānnāstīti yo brūyātsa ca vai brahmahā nṛpa

"Whoever calls over a destitute brahmin who is begging, and then says, 'I have nothing to give' — he too, O king, is indeed a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 53 (padma.2.67.53)

यस्तु विद्याभिमानेन निस्तेजयति वै द्विजम् । उदासीनं सभामध्ये ब्रह्महा स प्रकीर्तितः

yastu vidyābhimānena nistejayati vai dvijam udāsīnaṁ sabhāmadhye brahmahā sa prakīrtitaḥ

"Whoever, out of pride in his own learning, strips a brahmin sitting quietly in an assembly of his dignity — he is proclaimed a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 54 (padma.2.67.54)

मिथ्यागुणैरथात्मानं नयत्युत्कर्षतां पुनः । गुरुं विरोधयेद्यस्तु स च वै ब्रह्महा स्मृतः

mithyāguṇairathātmānaṁ nayatyutkarṣatāṁ punaḥ guruṁ virodhayedyastu sa ca vai brahmahā smṛtaḥ

"And whoever, through false claims of virtue, elevates himself and opposes his guru — he too is remembered as a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 55 (padma.2.67.55)

क्षुत्तृषातप्तदेहानामन्नभोजनमिच्छताम् । यः समाचरते विघ्नं तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम्

kṣuttṛṣātaptadehānāmannabhojanamicchatām yaḥ samācarate vighnaṁ tamāhurbrahmaghātakam

"Whoever puts an obstacle in the way of those whose bodies are scorched by hunger and thirst and who wish for food — he is called a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 56 (padma.2.67.56)

पिशुनः सर्वलोकानां रंध्रान्वेषणतत्परः । उद्वेजनकरः क्रूरः स च वै ब्रह्महा स्मृतः

piśunaḥ sarvalokānāṁ raṁdhrānveṣaṇatatparaḥ udvejanakaraḥ krūraḥ sa ca vai brahmahā smṛtaḥ

"The slanderer, ever intent on hunting for others' faults, who causes anguish and is cruel — he too is reckoned a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 57 (padma.2.67.57)

देवद्विज गवां भूमिं पूर्वदत्तां हरेत्तु यः । प्रनष्टामपि कालेन तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम्

devadvija gavāṁ bhūmiṁ pūrvadattāṁ harettu yaḥ pranaṣṭāmapi kālena tamāhurbrahmaghātakam

"Whoever seizes land previously granted to gods, brahmins, or cows — even land that has lapsed into disuse over time — he is called a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 58 (padma.2.67.58)

द्विजवित्तापहरणं न्यासेन समुपार्जितम् । ब्रह्महत्यासमं ज्ञेयं तस्य पातकमुत्तमम्

dvijavittāpaharaṇaṁ nyāsena samupārjitam brahmahatyāsamaṁ jñeyaṁ tasya pātakamuttamam

"The theft of a brahmin's wealth that had been placed in trust as a deposit — this sin should be known as the very worst, equal to the killing of a brahmin."

Verse 59 (padma.2.67.59)

अग्निहोत्रं परित्यज्य पंचयज्ञीयकर्मणि । मातापित्रोर्गुरूणां च कूटसाक्ष्यं च यश्चरेत्

agnihotraṁ parityajya paṁcayajñīyakarmaṇi mātāpitrorgurūṇāṁ ca kūṭasākṣyaṁ ca yaścaret

"Whoever abandons the fire-offering among the duties of the five daily sacrifices, and gives false testimony against his parents and gurus,"

Verse 60 (padma.2.67.60)

अप्रियं शिवभक्तानामभक्ष्याणां च भक्षणम् । वने निरपराधानां प्राणिनां च प्रमारणम्

apriyaṁ śivabhaktānāmabhakṣyāṇāṁ ca bhakṣaṇam vane niraparādhānāṁ prāṇināṁ ca pramāraṇam

"whatever displeases the devotees of Shiva, the eating of forbidden food, and the slaying of innocent creatures in the forest,"

Verse 61 (padma.2.67.61)

गवां गोष्ठे वने चाग्नेः पुरे ग्रामे च दीपनम् । इति पापानि घोराणि सुरापानसमानि तु

gavāṁ goṣṭhe vane cāgneḥ pure grāme ca dīpanam iti pāpāni ghorāṇi surāpānasamāni tu

"and the setting of fire to a cow-shed, a forest, a town, or a village — these are terrible sins, equal indeed to the drinking of liquor."

Verse 62 (padma.2.67.62)

दीनसर्वस्वहरणं परस्त्रीगजवाजिनाम् । गोभूरजतवस्त्राणामोषधीनां रसस्य च

dīnasarvasvaharaṇaṁ parastrīgajavājinām gobhūrajatavastrāṇāmoṣadhīnāṁ rasasya ca

"The seizing of all a poor man's possessions, of another's wife, elephants, or horses, of cows, land, silver, garments, of medicinal herbs and of precious essences,"

Verse 63 (padma.2.67.63)

चंदनागुरुकर्पूर कस्तूरी पट्ट वाससाम् । परन्यासापहरणं रुक्मस्तेयसमं स्मृतम्

caṁdanāgurukarpūra kastūrī paṭṭa vāsasām paranyāsāpaharaṇaṁ rukmasteyasamaṁ smṛtam

"of sandalwood, aloewood, camphor, musk, and silk garments — the theft of another's entrusted property is reckoned equal to the theft of gold."

Verse 64 (padma.2.67.64)

कन्याया वरयोग्याया अदानं सदृशे वरे । पुत्रमित्रकलत्रेषु गमनं भगिनीषु च

kanyāyā varayogyāyā adānaṁ sadṛśe vare putramitrakalatreṣu gamanaṁ bhaginīṣu ca

"Failing to give a marriageable daughter to a suitable groom, and illicit union with the wife of one's son or friend, or with one's sisters,"

Verse 65 (padma.2.67.65)

कुमारीसाहसं घोरमंत्यजस्त्रीनिषेवणम् । सवर्णायाश्च गमनं गुरुतल्पसमं स्मृतम्

kumārīsāhasaṁ ghoramaṁtyajastrīniṣevaṇam savarṇāyāśca gamanaṁ gurutalpasamaṁ smṛtam

"The terrible violation of a virgin, consorting with a woman of the lowest caste, and union with a woman of the guru's own class in a forbidden way — these are reckoned equal to violating the guru's bed."

Verse 66 (padma.2.67.66)

महापातकतुल्यानि पापान्युक्तानि यानि तु । तानि पातकसंज्ञानि तन्न्यूनमुपपातकम्

mahāpātakatulyāni pāpānyuktāni yāni tu tāni pātakasaṁjñāni tannyūnamupapātakam

"Those sins that have been declared equal to the great sins are termed simply 'sins'; those lesser than these are termed 'minor sins' (upapataka)."

Verse 67 (padma.2.67.67)

द्विजायार्थं प्रतिज्ञाय न प्रयच्छति यः पुनः । तत्र विस्मरते विप्रस्तुल्यं तदुपपातकम्

dvijāyārthaṁ pratijñāya na prayacchati yaḥ punaḥ tatra vismarate viprastulyaṁ tadupapātakam

"Whoever, having promised wealth to a brahmin, does not give it, or forgets a promise made to a brahmin — that too is equally a minor sin."

Verse 68 (padma.2.67.68)

द्विजद्रव्यापहरणं मर्यादाया व्यतिक्रमम् । अतिमानातिकोपश्च दांभिकत्वं कृतघ्नता

dvijadravyāpaharaṇaṁ maryādāyā vyatikramam atimānātikopaśca dāṁbhikatvaṁ kṛtaghnatā

"The theft of a brahmin's property, the transgression of proper limits, excessive pride and excessive anger, hypocrisy, ingratitude,"

Verse 69 (padma.2.67.69)

अन्यत्र विषयासक्तिः कार्पर्ण्यं शाठ्यमत्सरम् । परदाराभिगमनं साध्वीकन्याभिदूषणम्

anyatra viṣayāsaktiḥ kārparṇyaṁ śāṭhyamatsaram paradārābhigamanaṁ sādhvīkanyābhidūṣaṇam

"attachment to sensual pleasures elsewhere than with one's own wife, stinginess, deceit, envy, going to another man's wife, and violating a chaste maiden,"

Verse 70 (padma.2.67.70)

परिवित्तिः परिवेत्ता यया च परिविद्यते । तयोर्दानं च कन्यायास्तयोरेव च याजनम्

parivittiḥ parivettā yayā ca parividyate tayordānaṁ ca kanyāyāstayoreva ca yājanam

"The sin of parivitti (a younger brother marrying before the elder) and parivetta (the elder who lets this happen), and the bride through whom it occurs — giving one's daughter to such people in marriage, and officiating as their priest —"

Verse 71 (padma.2.67.71)

पुत्रमित्रकलत्राणामभावे स्वामिनस्तथा । भार्याणां च परित्यागः साधूनां च तपस्विनाम्

putramitrakalatrāṇāmabhāve svāminastathā bhāryāṇāṁ ca parityāgaḥ sādhūnāṁ ca tapasvinām

"The abandonment of one's sons, friends, wife, and likewise one's master in their time of need, and the forsaking of dependent women, of the virtuous, and of ascetics,"

Verse 72 (padma.2.67.72)

गवां क्षत्रियवैश्यानां स्त्रीशूद्राणां च घातनम् । शिवायतनवृक्षाणां पुण्याराम विनाशनम्

gavāṁ kṣatriyavaiśyānāṁ strīśūdrāṇāṁ ca ghātanam śivāyatanavṛkṣāṇāṁ puṇyārāma vināśanam

"the killing of cows, of kshatriyas and vaishyas, of women and shudras, and the destruction of a Shiva-temple, of sacred trees, and of holy gardens,"

Verse 73 (padma.2.67.73)

यः पीडामाश्रमस्थानामाचरेदल्पिकामपि । तद्भृत्यपरिवर्गस्य पशुधान्यवनस्य च

yaḥ pīḍāmāśramasthānāmācaredalpikāmapi tadbhṛtyaparivargasya paśudhānyavanasya ca

"whoever causes even the slightest suffering to those dwelling in a hermitage, to their servants and household, or to their cattle, grain, or forest,"

Verse 74 (padma.2.67.74)

कर्ष धान्य पशुस्तेयमयाज्यानां च याजनम् । यज्ञारामतडागानां दारापत्यस्य विक्रयः

karṣa dhānya paśusteyamayājyānāṁ ca yājanam yajñārāmataḍāgānāṁ dārāpatyasya vikrayaḥ

"the theft of ploughed land, grain, or livestock, officiating as priest for those unfit to be sacrificed for, selling sacrificial groves or reservoirs, and selling one's wife or children,"

Verse 75 (padma.2.67.75)

तीर्थयात्रोपवासानां व्रतानां च सुकर्मणाम् । स्त्रीधनान्युपजीवंति स्त्रीभगात्यंतजीविता

tīrthayātropavāsānāṁ vratānāṁ ca sukarmaṇām strīdhanānyupajīvaṁti strībhagātyaṁtajīvitā

"likewise the selling of pilgrimages, fasts, vows, and meritorious acts — those who live off a woman's wealth, subsisting entirely on a woman's immoral earnings,"

Verse 76 (padma.2.67.76)

स्वधर्मं विक्रयेद्यस्तु अधर्मं वर्णते नरः । परदोषप्रवादी च परच्छिद्रावलोककः

svadharmaṁ vikrayedyastu adharmaṁ varṇate naraḥ paradoṣapravādī ca paracchidrāvalokakaḥ

"whoever sells his own dharma and preaches adharma instead, who is given to proclaiming others' faults and to watching for their weaknesses,"

Verse 77 (padma.2.67.77)

परद्रव्याभिलाषी च परदारावलोककः । एते गोघ्नसमानाश्च ज्ञातव्या नृपनंदन

paradravyābhilāṣī ca paradārāvalokakaḥ ete goghnasamānāśca jñātavyā nṛpanaṁdana

"who covets another's wealth, and who casts his eye on another's wife — these, O prince, should be known as equal to a slayer of a cow."

Verse 78 (padma.2.67.78)

यः कर्ता सर्वशास्त्राणां गोहर्ता गोश्च विक्रयी । निर्दयोऽतीव भृत्येषु पशूनां दमकश्च यः

yaḥ kartā sarvaśāstrāṇāṁ gohartā gośca vikrayī nirdayo'tīva bhṛtyeṣu paśūnāṁ damakaśca yaḥ

"Whoever, though versed in all the shastras, steals and sells cows, who is utterly merciless toward his servants, and who cruelly subdues his animals,"

Verse 79 (padma.2.67.79)

मिथ्या प्रवदते वाचमाकर्णयति यः परैः । स्वामिद्रोही गुरुद्रोही मायावी चपलः शठः

mithyā pravadate vācamākarṇayati yaḥ paraiḥ svāmidrohī gurudrohī māyāvī capalaḥ śaṭhaḥ

"who speaks falsehood and listens to falsehood spoken by others, who betrays his master and his guru, who is deceitful, fickle, and cunning,"

Verse 80 (padma.2.67.80)

यो भार्यापुत्रमित्राणि बालवृद्धकृशातुरान् । भृत्यानतिथिबंधूंश्च त्यक्त्वाश्नाति बुभुक्षितान्

yo bhāryāputramitrāṇi bālavṛddhakṛśāturān bhṛtyānatithibaṁdhūṁśca tyaktvāśnāti bubhukṣitān

"whoever eats while leaving his hungry wife, sons, and friends unfed — the young, the old, the frail, the sick, his servants, guests, and kinsfolk,"

Verse 81 (padma.2.67.81)

ये तु मृष्टं समश्नंति नो वांच्छंतं ददंति च । पृथक्पाकी स विज्ञेयो ब्रह्मवादिषु गर्हितः

ye tu mṛṣṭaṁ samaśnaṁti no vāṁcchaṁtaṁ dadaṁti ca pṛthakpākī sa vijñeyo brahmavādiṣu garhitaḥ

"and whoever eats rich food himself but gives none to one who longs for it should be known as one who cooks only for himself — a man condemned among the knowers of Brahman."

Verse 82 (padma.2.67.82)

नियमान्स्वयमादाय ये त्यजंत्यजितेंद्रियाः । प्रव्रज्यागमिता यैश्च संयुक्ता ये च मद्यपैः

niyamānsvayamādāya ye tyajaṁtyajiteṁdriyāḥ pravrajyāgamitā yaiśca saṁyuktā ye ca madyapaiḥ

"those who, having themselves undertaken vows, abandon them for want of self-control; those who have taken up the wandering ascetic's life without fitness, and those who keep the company of drunkards,"

Verse 83 (padma.2.67.83)

ये चापि क्षयरोगार्तां गां पिपासा क्षुधातुराम् । न पालयंति यत्नेन ते गोघ्ना नारकाः स्मृताः

ye cāpi kṣayarogārtāṁ gāṁ pipāsā kṣudhāturām na pālayaṁti yatnena te goghnā nārakāḥ smṛtāḥ

"and those who fail to carefully care for a cow afflicted by wasting disease, or tormented by thirst and hunger — they are remembered as cow-slayers, bound for hell."

Verse 84 (padma.2.67.84)

सर्वपापरता ये च चतुष्पात्क्षेत्रभेदकाः । साधून्विप्रान्गुरूंश्चैव यश्च गां हि प्रताडयेत्

sarvapāparatā ye ca catuṣpātkṣetrabhedakāḥ sādhūnviprāngurūṁścaiva yaśca gāṁ hi pratāḍayet

"those devoted to every sin, who trespass upon the grazing land of a quadruped, and whoever strikes the virtuous, brahmins, gurus, or indeed a cow,"

Verse 85 (padma.2.67.85)

ये ताडयंत्यदोषां च नारीं साधुपदेस्थिताम् । आलस्यबद्धसर्वांगो यः स्वपिति मुहुर्मुहुः

ye tāḍayaṁtyadoṣāṁ ca nārīṁ sādhupadesthitām ālasyabaddhasarvāṁgo yaḥ svapiti muhurmuhuḥ

"those who strike an innocent woman who stands in righteous conduct, and whoever, his whole body bound by sloth, sleeps again and again,"

Verse 86 (padma.2.67.86)

दुर्बलांश्च न पुष्णंति नष्टान्नान्वेषयंति च । पीडयंत्यतिभारेण सक्षतान्वाहयंति च

durbalāṁśca na puṣṇaṁti naṣṭānnānveṣayaṁti ca pīḍayaṁtyatibhāreṇa sakṣatānvāhayaṁti ca

"and those who fail to nourish weak animals, who do not search for lost ones, who torment them with excessive loads, and who make wounded animals carry burdens,"

Verse 87 (padma.2.67.87)

सर्वपापरता ये च संयुक्ता ये च भुंजते । भग्नांगीं क्षतरोगार्तां गोरूपां च क्षुधातुराम्

sarvapāparatā ye ca saṁyuktā ye ca bhuṁjate bhagnāṁgīṁ kṣatarogārtāṁ gorūpāṁ ca kṣudhāturām

"those devoted to every sin, who make use of the milk of a cow whose limbs are broken, who is afflicted with wounds and disease, and tormented by hunger,"

Verse 88 (padma.2.67.88)

न पालयंति यत्नेन ते जना नारकाः स्मृताः । वृषाणां वृषणौ ये च पापिष्ठा घातयंति च

na pālayaṁti yatnena te janā nārakāḥ smṛtāḥ vṛṣāṇāṁ vṛṣaṇau ye ca pāpiṣṭhā ghātayaṁti ca

"yet do not tend her with care — such people are remembered as bound for hell. And those most sinful men who castrate bulls,"

Verse 89 (padma.2.67.89)

बाधयंति च गोवत्सान्महानारकिणो नराः । आशया समनुप्राप्तं क्षुत्तृषाश्रमपीडितम्

bādhayaṁti ca govatsānmahānārakiṇo narāḥ āśayā samanuprāptaṁ kṣuttṛṣāśramapīḍitam

"and those who torment calves — such men are great inhabitants of hell. As for one who arrives in hope, afflicted by hunger, thirst, and the fatigue of the journey,"

Verse 90 (padma.2.67.90)

ये चातिथिं न मन्यंते ते वै निरयगामिनः । अनाथं विकलं दीनं बालं वृद्धं भृशातुरम्

ye cātithiṁ na manyaṁte te vai nirayagāminaḥ anāthaṁ vikalaṁ dīnaṁ bālaṁ vṛddhaṁ bhṛśāturam

"those who fail to honor such a guest are indeed bound for hell. The orphaned, the disabled, the destitute, the child, the aged, the gravely afflicted —"

Verse 91 (padma.2.67.91)

नानुकंपंति ये मूढास्ते यांति नरकार्णवम् । अजाविको माहिषिको यः शूद्रा वृषलीपतिः

nānukaṁpaṁti ye mūḍhāste yāṁti narakārṇavam ajāviko māhiṣiko yaḥ śūdrā vṛṣalīpatiḥ

"those fools who show them no compassion sink into the ocean of hell. The keeper of goats and sheep, the buffalo-herder, and the shudra who is husband to a low-born woman,"

Verse 92 (padma.2.67.92)

शूद्रो विप्रस्य क्षत्रस्य य आचारेण वर्तते । शिल्पिनः कारवो वैद्यास्तथा देवलका नराः

śūdro viprasya kṣatrasya ya ācāreṇa vartate śilpinaḥ kāravo vaidyāstathā devalakā narāḥ

"a shudra who conducts himself according to the customs of a brahmin or kshatriya, artisans, craftsmen, physicians, and men who serve as hired temple-priests,"

Verse 93 (padma.2.67.93)

भृतकामात्यकर्माणः सर्वे निरयगामिनः । यश्चोदितमतिक्रम्य स्वेच्छया आहरेत्करम्

bhṛtakāmātyakarmāṇaḥ sarve nirayagāminaḥ yaścoditamatikramya svecchayā āharetkaram

"and those who work as hired ministers for improper gain — all these are bound for hell. And whoever, exceeding what is prescribed, collects taxes according to his own whim,"

Verse 94 (padma.2.67.94)

नरकेषु स पच्येत यश्च दंडं वृथा नयेत् । उत्कोचकैरधिकृतैस्तस्करैश्च प्रपीड्यते

narakeṣu sa pacyeta yaśca daṁḍaṁ vṛthā nayet utkocakairadhikṛtaistaskaraiśca prapīḍyate

"he shall be cooked in the hells; and whoever metes out punishment wrongly — a realm afflicted by bribe-taking officials and thieves —"

Verse 95 (padma.2.67.95)

यस्य राज्ञः प्रजा राज्ये पच्यते नरकेषु सः । ये द्विजाः प्रतिगृह्णंति नृपस्य पापवर्तिनः

yasya rājñaḥ prajā rājye pacyate narakeṣu saḥ ye dvijāḥ pratigṛhṇaṁti nṛpasya pāpavartinaḥ

"the king in whose realm the subjects suffer in this way is himself cooked in the hells. Those brahmins who accept gifts from a king who conducts himself sinfully —"

Verse 96 (padma.2.67.96)

प्रयांति तेपि घोरेषु नरकेषु न संशयः । पारदारिकचौराणां यत्पापं पार्थिवस्य च

prayāṁti tepi ghoreṣu narakeṣu na saṁśayaḥ pāradārikacaurāṇāṁ yatpāpaṁ pārthivasya ca

"they too, without doubt, go to terrible hells. Whatever sin belongs to adulterers and thieves also belongs to the king,"

Verse 97 (padma.2.67.97)

भवत्यरक्षतो घोरो राज्ञस्तस्य परिग्रहः । अचौरं चौरवद्यश्च चौरं चाचौरवत्पुनः

bhavatyarakṣato ghoro rājñastasya parigrahaḥ acauraṁ cauravadyaśca cauraṁ cācauravatpunaḥ

"when a king fails to protect his subjects, this terrible burden falls upon him. And whoever, without proper judgment, treats an innocent man as a thief, and again a thief as innocent,"

Verse 98 (padma.2.67.98)

अविचार्य नृपः कुर्यात्सोऽपि वै नरकं व्रजेत् । घृततैलान्नपानादि मधुमांस सुरासवम्

avicārya nṛpaḥ kuryātso'pi vai narakaṁ vrajet ghṛtatailānnapānādi madhumāṁsa surāsavam

"the king who acts thus without deliberation surely goes to hell himself. Ghee, oil, food and drink and such, honey, meat, liquor and spirits,"

Verse 99 (padma.2.67.99)

गुडेक्षुक्षीरशाकादि दधिमूलफलानि च । तृणकाष्ठं पुष्पपत्रं कांस्यभाजनमेव च

guḍekṣukṣīraśākādi dadhimūlaphalāni ca tṛṇakāṣṭhaṁ puṣpapatraṁ kāṁsyabhājanameva ca

"jaggery, sugarcane, milk, vegetables, curd, roots and fruits, grass, wood, flowers and leaves, and bronze vessels,"

Verse 100 (padma.2.67.100)

उपानच्छत्रकटक शिबिकामासनं मृदु । ताम्रं सीसं त्रपुकांस्यं शंखाद्यं च जलोद्भवम्

upānacchatrakaṭaka śibikāmāsanaṁ mṛdu tāmraṁ sīsaṁ trapukāṁsyaṁ śaṁkhādyaṁ ca jalodbhavam

"sandals, umbrella, bracelet, palanquin, soft seats, copper, lead, tin, bronze, conch-shells and the like, and things born of water,"

Verse 101 (padma.2.67.101)

वादित्रं वेणुवंशाद्यं गृहोपस्करणानि च । ऊर्णाकार्पासकौशेय रंगपद्मोद्भवानि च

vāditraṁ veṇuvaṁśādyaṁ gṛhopaskaraṇāni ca ūrṇākārpāsakauśeya raṁgapadmodbhavāni ca

"musical instruments, bamboo flutes and the like, household furnishings, garments of wool, cotton and silk, dyes, and things produced from the lotus,"

तूलं सूक्ष्माणिवस्त्राणि ये लोभेन हरंति च । एवमादीनि चान्यानि द्रव्याणि विविधानि च

tūlaṁ sūkṣmāṇivastrāṇi ye lobhena haraṁti ca evamādīni cānyāni dravyāṇi vividhāni ca

"cotton floss, fine garments — whoever, out of greed, steals these and other such various articles,"

Verse 103 (padma.2.67.103)

नरकेषु द्रुतं गच्छेदपहृत्याल्पकान्यपि । यद्वा तद्वा परद्रव्यमपि सर्षपमात्रकम्

narakeṣu drutaṁ gacchedapahṛtyālpakānyapi yadvā tadvā paradravyamapi sarṣapamātrakam

"goes swiftly to the hells, even for stealing only small things. Whatever it may be — another's property, even as small as a mustard seed —"

Verse 104 (padma.2.67.104)

अपहृत्य नरो याति नरके नात्र संशयः । बह्वल्पकाद्यपि तथा परस्य ममताकृतम्

apahṛtya naro yāti narake nātra saṁśayaḥ bahvalpakādyapi tathā parasya mamatākṛtam

"having stolen it, a man goes to hell — there is no doubt of this. Likewise, whether much or little, whatever belonging to another one wrongfully claims as one's own,"

Verse 105 (padma.2.67.105)

अपहृत्य नरो याति नरके नात्र संशयः । एवमाद्यैर्नरः पापैरुत्क्रांतिसमनंतरम्

apahṛtya naro yāti narake nātra saṁśayaḥ evamādyairnaraḥ pāpairutkrāṁtisamanaṁtaram

"having taken it, a man goes to hell — there is no doubt of this. By such sins as these, a man, immediately after the departure of the soul,"

Verse 106 (padma.2.67.106)

शरीरघातनार्थाय पूर्वाकारमवाप्नुयात् । यमलोकं व्रजंत्येते शरीरस्था यमाज्ञया

śarīraghātanārthāya pūrvākāramavāpnuyāt yamalokaṁ vrajaṁtyete śarīrasthā yamājñayā

"obtains a body resembling his former one, so that his body may be made to suffer; thus embodied, they proceed to Yama's realm by Yama's command,"

Verse 107 (padma.2.67.107)

यमदूतैर्महाघोरैर्नीयमानाः सुदुःखिताः । देवतिर्यङ्मनुष्याणामधर्मनियतात्मनाम्

yamadūtairmahāghorairnīyamānāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ devatiryaṅmanuṣyāṇāmadharmaniyatātmanām

"led away in great suffering by Yama's terrifying messengers. For gods, animals, and men whose souls are fixed in unrighteousness,"

Verse 108 (padma.2.67.108)

धर्मराजः स्मृतः शास्ता सुघोरैर्विविधैर्वधैः । विनयाचारयुक्तानां प्रमादान्मलिनात्मनाम्

dharmarājaḥ smṛtaḥ śāstā sughorairvividhairvadhaiḥ vinayācārayuktānāṁ pramādānmalinātmanām

"Dharmaraja is known as their chastiser, through various terrible forms of punishment. But for those of humility and good conduct, whose souls are stained only through negligence,"

Verse 109 (padma.2.67.109)

प्रायश्चित्तैर्गुरुः शास्ता न च तैरीक्ष्यते यमः । पारदारिकचौराणामन्यायव्यवहारिणाम्

prāyaścittairguruḥ śāstā na ca tairīkṣyate yamaḥ pāradārikacaurāṇāmanyāyavyavahāriṇām

"their chastiser is the guru, through acts of penance, and such people never even set eyes on Yama. For adulterers, thieves, and those who deal unjustly,"

Verse 110 (padma.2.67.110)

नृपतिः शासकः प्रोक्तः प्रच्छन्नानां च धर्मराट् । तस्मात्कृतस्य पापस्य प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत्

nṛpatiḥ śāsakaḥ proktaḥ pracchannānāṁ ca dharmarāṭ tasmātkṛtasya pāpasya prāyaścittaṁ samācaret

"the king is declared their chastiser, and for those whose sins remain hidden, Dharmaraja is the chastiser. Therefore, for any sin committed, one should surely perform penance."

Verse 111 (padma.2.67.111)

नाभुक्तस्यान्यथा नाशः कल्पकोटिशतैरपि । यः करोति स्वयं कर्म कारयेद्वानुमोदयेत्

nābhuktasyānyathā nāśaḥ kalpakoṭiśatairapi yaḥ karoti svayaṁ karma kārayedvānumodayet

"A deed not yet experienced in its consequence cannot otherwise be destroyed, even over hundreds of millions of kalpas. Whoever performs an act himself, or has it done by another, or approves of it —"

Verse 112 (padma.2.67.112)

कायेन मनसा वाचा तस्य चाधोगतिः फलम् । इति संक्षेपतः प्रोक्ताः पापभेदास्त्रिधाधुना

kāyena manasā vācā tasya cādhogatiḥ phalam iti saṁkṣepataḥ proktāḥ pāpabhedāstridhādhunā

"whether by body, mind, or speech — for him the fruit is downfall. Thus, in brief, the divisions of sin have now been declared in these three ways."

Verse 113 (padma.2.67.113)

कथ्यंते गतयश्चित्रा नराणां पापकर्मणाम् । एतत्ते नृपते धर्म फलं प्रोक्तं सुविस्तरात्

kathyaṁte gatayaścitrā narāṇāṁ pāpakarmaṇām etatte nṛpate dharma phalaṁ proktaṁ suvistarāt

"Thus have the varied fates of men of sinful deeds been recounted. O king, this account of the law and its fruit has now been told to you in full detail."

Verse 114 (padma.2.67.114)

अन्यत्किंते प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्मे ब्रूहि नरोत्तम । अधर्मस्य फलं प्रोक्तं धर्मस्यापि वदाम्यहम्

anyatkiṁte pravakṣyāmi tanme brūhi narottama adharmasya phalaṁ proktaṁ dharmasyāpi vadāmyaham

"O best of men, tell me what else I should relate to you. The fruit of unrighteousness has now been told; I shall tell you the fruit of righteousness as well."

Verse 115 (padma.2.67.115)

इत्युक्त्वा मातलिस्तत्र राजानं सर्ववत्सलम् । तस्मिन्धर्मप्रसंगेन इत्याख्यातं महात्मना

ityuktvā mātalistatra rājānaṁ sarvavatsalam tasmindharmaprasaṁgena ityākhyātaṁ mahātmanā

Having said this to the king, beloved of all, there — thus, in the course of this discourse on dharma, it was narrated by that great soul.
