Diti said: 'True, my lord, is all that you have spoken, no doubt of it. Yet, setting aside a husband's affection, O brahmin, my mind has turned to what is born of a co-wife's rivalry—'
Verse 2 (padma.2.7.2)

na kurvaṁti mahātmāno vyarthameva na saṁśayaḥ paṁcabhūtātmakaṁ kāyaṁ kevalaṁ saṁdhijarjaram

Verse 63 (padma.2.7.63)
yadā prerayate buddhistadā paśyāva nānyathā vasāvaḥ kāyamadhye vai rūpaṁ guṇamihāvayoḥ
—'whenever Intellect impels us, then we see them, and not otherwise; we dwell within the body — form is our quality here.'
Verse 64 (padma.2.7.64)
evaṁ vyāpārasaṁbaṁdhaḥ kāyamadhye mahāmate jihvovāca- buddhiyuktā ahaṁ tāta rasabhedānvicāraye

svīyāni yāni karmāṇi kathayaṁti punaḥ punaḥ atha buddhiḥ samāyātā tamuvāca mahāmatim
—declaring, again and again, their own respective functions. Then Intellect came and spoke to that great-minded Self:
Verse 68 (padma.2.7.68)
madvihīno yadā kāyastadā naśyati nānyathā tasmāttvaṁ māṁ samāsthāya varttayasva mahāmate

—'and by me you are sent upon the very path by which you go here.' Having heard all this, the Self spoke to them:

'You are all joined with the five elements, common to every being. Why then do those five elements desire the friendship of you five senses?'
Verse 72 (padma.2.7.72)

bruvaṁtu kāraṇaṁ sarve mamāgre sarvameva tat paṁcātmakā ūcuḥ- asmatsaṁgaprasaṁgena piṁḍameva prajāyate

paṁcatattvasamāyuktaḥ kāyitvaṁ gatavānprabhuḥ yadā garbhaṁ samāyāto viṣṭhāmūtrasamākule
—joined now with the five elements, that lord came to possess embodiment; and when he entered the womb, amid its filth of excrement and urine—
Verse 78 (padma.2.7.78)
durgaṁdhe picchilāvarte patitastaiḥ sa saṁyutaḥ aṁgena vyākulībhūtaḥ paṁcātmakānuvāca saḥ
—into that foul-smelling, slimy whirl, he fell, bound together with them; distressed in every limb, he said to the five elements:
Verse 79 (padma.2.7.79)

tatrāsminpicchile ghore patito hi mahābhaye paṁcātmakā ūcuḥ- tāvatsaṁsthīyatāṁ rājanyāvadgarbhaḥ prapūrayet
—'having fallen into this dreadful, slimy place, in great terror.' The five elements said: 'O king, remain here until the term of the womb is fulfilled—'
Verse 81 (padma.2.7.81)
—'afterward your emergence shall surely come, no doubt of it. You are indeed our lord, established in the domain of the body—'
Verse 82 (padma.2.7.82)
rājyamevaṁ prakartavyaṁ sukhabhoktā bhaviṣyati teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā ātmā duḥkhena pīḍitaḥ
—'rule thus, and you shall become an enjoyer of happiness.' Hearing their word, the Self, tormented by suffering—
Verse 83 (padma.2.7.83)
gaṁtumicchannasau tasmātpalāyanaparobhavat
—and desiring to leave that place, became intent upon escape.
