Verse 1 (padma.2.83.1)

सुकर्मोवाच- समाहूय प्रजाः सर्वा द्वीपानां वसुधाधिपः । हर्षेण महताविष्ट इदं वचनमब्रवीत्

sukarmovāca- samāhūya prajāḥ sarvā dvīpānāṁ vasudhādhipaḥ harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭa idaṁ vacanamabravīt

Sukarma said: "Having summoned all the subjects of every continent, the lord of the earth, filled with great joy, spoke these words."

Verse 2 (padma.2.83.2)

इंद्रलोकं ब्रह्मलोकं रुद्रलोकमतः परम् । वैष्णवं सर्वपापघ्नं प्राणिनां गतिदायकम्

iṁdralokaṁ brahmalokaṁ rudralokamataḥ param vaiṣṇavaṁ sarvapāpaghnaṁ prāṇināṁ gatidāyakam

"'I go to the world of Indra, the world of Brahma, and beyond that the world of Rudra, and to the Vaishnava world that destroys all sin and grants the highest goal to every being -'"

Verse 3 (padma.2.83.3)

व्रजाम्यहं न संदेहो ह्यनया सह सत्तमाः । ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः सशूद्रा श्च प्रजा मम

vrajāmyahaṁ na saṁdeho hyanayā saha sattamāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ saśūdrā śca prajā mama

"'- together with her, without doubt, O worthy ones. Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras - all my subjects -'"

Verse 4 (padma.2.83.4)

सुखेनापि सकुटुंबैः स्थातव्यं तु महीतले । पूरुरेष महाभागो भवतां पालकस्त्विह

sukhenāpi sakuṭuṁbaiḥ sthātavyaṁ tu mahītale pūrureṣa mahābhāgo bhavatāṁ pālakastviha

"'- must remain happily upon this earth, together with your families. This most fortunate Puru shall be your protector here.'"

Verse 5 (padma.2.83.5)

स्थापितोस्ति मया लोका राजा धीरः सदंडकः । एवमुक्तास्तु ताः सर्वाः प्रजा राजानमब्रुवन्

sthāpitosti mayā lokā rājā dhīraḥ sadaṁḍakaḥ evamuktāstu tāḥ sarvāḥ prajā rājānamabruvan

"'I have established over these worlds a steady king, wielder of the rod of justice.'" Thus addressed, all those subjects said to the king -

Verse 6 (padma.2.83.6)

श्रूयते सर्ववेदेषु पुराणेषु नृपोत्तम । धर्म एवं यतो लोके न दृष्टः केन वै पुरा

śrūyate sarvavedeṣu purāṇeṣu nṛpottama dharma evaṁ yato loke na dṛṣṭaḥ kena vai purā

"'It is heard in all the Vedas and Puranas, O best of kings, that such dharma as this has never before been seen by anyone in this world.'"

Verse 7 (padma.2.83.7)

दृष्टोस्माभिरसौ धर्मो दशांगः सत्यवल्लभः । सोमवंशसमुत्पन्नो नहुषस्य महागृहे

dṛṣṭosmābhirasau dharmo daśāṁgaḥ satyavallabhaḥ somavaṁśasamutpanno nahuṣasya mahāgṛhe

"'We have witnessed this ten-fold dharma, devoted to truth, born in the lunar dynasty, in the great house of Nahusha.'"

Verse 8 (padma.2.83.8)

हस्तपादमुखैर्युक्तः सर्वाचारप्रचारकः । ज्ञानविज्ञानसंपन्नः पुण्यानां च महानिधिः

hastapādamukhairyuktaḥ sarvācārapracārakaḥ jñānavijñānasaṁpannaḥ puṇyānāṁ ca mahānidhiḥ

"'Endowed with hands, feet, and face, a propagator of every good conduct, possessed of knowledge and discernment, a great treasury of merits -'"

Verse 9 (padma.2.83.9)

गुणानां हि महाराज आकरः सत्यपंडितः । कुर्वंति च महाधर्मं सत्यवंतो महौजसः

guṇānāṁ hi mahārāja ākaraḥ satyapaṁḍitaḥ kurvaṁti ca mahādharmaṁ satyavaṁto mahaujasaḥ

"'- a mine of virtues, O great king, a scholar of truth. Men of truth and great vigor alone accomplish great dharma.'"

Verse 10 (padma.2.83.10)

तं धर्मं दृष्टवंतः स्म भवंतं कामरूपिणम् । भवंतं कामकर्तारमीदृशं सत्यवादिनम्

taṁ dharmaṁ dṛṣṭavaṁtaḥ sma bhavaṁtaṁ kāmarūpiṇam bhavaṁtaṁ kāmakartāramīdṛśaṁ satyavādinam

"'We have seen that dharma embodied in you, who take whatever form you wish, who accomplish what you desire, such a speaker of truth.'"

Verse 11 (padma.2.83.11)

कर्मणा त्रिविधेनापि वयं त्यक्तुं न शक्नुमः । यत्र त्वं तत्र गच्छामः सुसुखं पुण्यमेव च

karmaṇā trividhenāpi vayaṁ tyaktuṁ na śaknumaḥ yatra tvaṁ tatra gacchāmaḥ susukhaṁ puṇyameva ca

"'We are unable to abandon you, in thought, word, or deed. Wherever you go, there we too shall go, in happiness and merit.'"

Verse 12 (padma.2.83.12)

नरकेपि भवान्यत्र वयं तत्र न संशयः । किं दारैर्धनभोगैश्च किं जीवैर्जीवितेन च

narakepi bhavānyatra vayaṁ tatra na saṁśayaḥ kiṁ dārairdhanabhogaiśca kiṁ jīvairjīvitena ca

"'O great king, even were you in hell, we would go there too, without doubt. What use are wives, wealth and pleasures, what use is life itself -'"

Verse 13 (padma.2.83.13)

त्वां विनासुमहाराज तेन नास्त्यत्र कारणम् । त्वयैव सह राजेंद्र वयं यास्याम नान्यथा

tvāṁ vināsumahārāja tena nāstyatra kāraṇam tvayaiva saha rājeṁdra vayaṁ yāsyāma nānyathā

"'- without you, great king? There is no reason for us here without you. O lord of kings, we shall go with you alone, and not otherwise.'"

Verse 14 (padma.2.83.14)

एवं श्रुत्वा वचस्तासां प्रजानां पृथिवीपतिः । हर्षेण महताविष्टः प्रजावाक्यमुवाच ह

evaṁ śrutvā vacastāsāṁ prajānāṁ pṛthivīpatiḥ harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ prajāvākyamuvāca ha

Having heard these words of his subjects, the lord of the earth, filled with great joy, spoke these words to them.

Verse 15 (padma.2.83.15)

आगच्छंतु मया सार्द्धं सर्वे लोकाः सुपुण्यकाः । नृपो रथं समारुह्य तया वै कामकन्यया

āgacchaṁtu mayā sārddhaṁ sarve lokāḥ supuṇyakāḥ nṛpo rathaṁ samāruhya tayā vai kāmakanyayā

"'Let all the meritorious come together with me.'" The king, mounted on his chariot together with that daughter of Kama -

Verse 16 (padma.2.83.16)

रथेन हंसवर्णेन चंद्रबिंबानुकारिणा । चामरैर्व्यजनैश्चापि वीज्यमानो गतव्यथः

rathena haṁsavarṇena caṁdrabiṁbānukāriṇā cāmarairvyajanaiścāpi vījyamāno gatavyathaḥ

- upon a chariot the color of a swan, resembling the orb of the moon, fanned by chowries and fans, free from all distress -

Verse 17 (padma.2.83.17)

केतुना तेन पुण्येन शुभ्रेणापि महीयसा । शोभमानो यथा देवो देवराजः पुरंदरः

ketunā tena puṇyena śubhreṇāpi mahīyasā śobhamāno yathā devo devarājaḥ puraṁdaraḥ

- shining, adorned with that auspicious, white, and mighty banner, resplendent like the god, the king of gods, Purandara himself -

Verse 18 (padma.2.83.18)

ऋषिभिः स्तूयमानस्तु बंदिभिश्चारणैस्तथा । प्रजाभिः स्तूयमानश्च ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः

ṛṣibhiḥ stūyamānastu baṁdibhiścāraṇaistathā prajābhiḥ stūyamānaśca yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ

- praised by sages, by bards and eulogists, and praised too by his subjects, Yayati, son of Nahusha -

Verse 19 (padma.2.83.19)

प्रजाः सर्वास्ततो यानैः समायाता नरेश्वरम् । गजैरश्वै रथैश्चान्यैः प्रस्थिताश्च दिवं प्रति

prajāḥ sarvāstato yānaiḥ samāyātā nareśvaram gajairaśvai rathaiścānyaiḥ prasthitāśca divaṁ prati

- then all his subjects came to that lord of men in their own vehicles, and set out toward the sky by elephants, horses, chariots, and other means.

Verse 20 (padma.2.83.20)

ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्चान्ये पृथग्जनाः । सर्वे च वैष्णवा लोका विष्णुध्यानपरायणाः

brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāścānye pṛthagjanāḥ sarve ca vaiṣṇavā lokā viṣṇudhyānaparāyaṇāḥ

Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, and other common folk - all these Vaishnava people, devoted wholly to meditation on Vishnu,

Verse 21 (padma.2.83.21)

तेषां तु केतवः शुक्ला हेमदंडैरलंकृताः । शंखचक्रांकिताः सर्वे सदंडाः सपताकिनः

teṣāṁ tu ketavaḥ śuklā hemadaṁḍairalaṁkṛtāḥ śaṁkhacakrāṁkitāḥ sarve sadaṁḍāḥ sapatākinaḥ

their white banners adorned with golden staffs, all marked with the conch and discus, complete with staffs and pennants.

Verse 22 (padma.2.83.22)

प्रजावृंदेषु भासंते पताका मारुतेरिताः । दिव्यमालाधरास्सर्वे शोभितास्तुलसीदलैः

prajāvṛṁdeṣu bhāsaṁte patākā māruteritāḥ divyamālādharāssarve śobhitāstulasīdalaiḥ

Amid the crowds of subjects those banners, stirred by the wind, shone brightly; all wore garlands divine, adorned with tulasi leaves.

Verse 23 (padma.2.83.23)

दिव्यचंदनदिग्धांगा दिव्यगंधानुलेपनाः । दिव्यवस्त्रकृता शोभा दिव्याभरणभूषिताः

divyacaṁdanadigdhāṁgā divyagaṁdhānulepanāḥ divyavastrakṛtā śobhā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ

Their bodies anointed with divine sandal-paste, smeared with divine fragrances, resplendent in divine garments, adorned with divine ornaments -

Verse 24 (padma.2.83.24)

सर्वे लोकाः सुरूपास्ते राजानमुपजग्मिरे । प्रजाशतसहस्राणि लक्षकोटिशतानि च

sarve lokāḥ surūpāste rājānamupajagmire prajāśatasahasrāṇi lakṣakoṭiśatāni ca

- all those beautiful people came to the king; hundreds of thousands, and hundreds of millions of subjects came.

Verse 25 (padma.2.83.25)

अर्वखर्वसहस्राणि ते जनाः प्रतिजग्मिरे । ते तु राज्ञा समं सर्वे वैष्णवाः पुण्यकारिणः

arvakharvasahasrāṇi te janāḥ pratijagmire te tu rājñā samaṁ sarve vaiṣṇavāḥ puṇyakāriṇaḥ

Countless numbers of people went forth; all of them, together with the king, were Vaishnavas performing meritorious deeds,

Verse 26 (padma.2.83.26)

विष्णुध्यानपराः सर्वे जपदानपरायणाः । सुकर्मोवाच- एवं ते प्रस्थिताः सर्वे हर्षेण महतान्विताः

viṣṇudhyānaparāḥ sarve japadānaparāyaṇāḥ sukarmovāca- evaṁ te prasthitāḥ sarve harṣeṇa mahatānvitāḥ

- all devoted to meditation on Vishnu, wholly given to recitation and gift-giving. Sukarma said: "Thus they all set out, filled with great joy -"

Verse 27 (padma.2.83.27)

पूरुं पुत्रं महाराज स्वराज्ये परिषिच्य तम् । ऐंद्रं लोकं जगामाथ ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः

pūruṁ putraṁ mahārāja svarājye pariṣicya tam aiṁdraṁ lokaṁ jagāmātha yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ

"- having consecrated his son Puru, O great king, in his own kingdom, Yayati, lord of the earth, then went to the world of Indra."

Verse 28 (padma.2.83.28)

तेजसा तस्य पुण्येन धर्मेण तपसा तदा । ते जनाः प्रस्थिताः सर्वे वैष्णवं लोकमुत्तमम्

tejasā tasya puṇyena dharmeṇa tapasā tadā te janāḥ prasthitāḥ sarve vaiṣṇavaṁ lokamuttamam

By his splendor, merit, dharma, and austerity, all those people then set out toward the excellent world of Vishnu.

Verse 29 (padma.2.83.29)

ततो देवाः सगंधर्वाः किन्नराश्चारणास्तथा । सहिता देवराजेन आगताः संमुखं तदा

tato devāḥ sagaṁdharvāḥ kinnarāścāraṇāstathā sahitā devarājena āgatāḥ saṁmukhaṁ tadā

Then the gods, together with gandharvas, kinnaras, and charanas, together with the king of the gods, came forth to meet him -

Verse 30 (padma.2.83.30)

तस्यैवापि नृपेंद्रस्य पूजयंतो नृपोत्तम । इंद्र उवाच- स्वागतं ते महाराज मम गेहं समाविश

tasyaivāpi nṛpeṁdrasya pūjayaṁto nṛpottama iṁdra uvāca- svāgataṁ te mahārāja mama gehaṁ samāviśa

- honoring that very lord of kings, O best of kings. Indra said: "Welcome, great king! Enter my abode."

Verse 31 (padma.2.83.31)

अत्र भोगान्प्रभुंक्ष्व त्वं दिव्यान्कामान्मनोऽनुगान् । राजोवाच- सहस्राक्ष महाप्राज्ञ तव पादांबुजद्वयम्

atra bhogānprabhuṁkṣva tvaṁ divyānkāmānmano'nugān rājovāca- sahasrākṣa mahāprājña tava pādāṁbujadvayam

"'Enjoy here divine pleasures that follow your very mind.'" The king said: "O thousand-eyed one, O greatly wise one, to your two lotus feet -"

Verse 32 (padma.2.83.32)

नमस्करोम्यहं देव ब्रह्मलोकं व्रजाम्यहम् । देवैः संस्तूयमानश्च ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह

namaskaromyahaṁ deva brahmalokaṁ vrajāmyaham devaiḥ saṁstūyamānaśca brahmalokaṁ jagāma ha

"- I bow, O god; I now go on to the world of Brahma." Praised by the gods, he went to the world of Brahma.

Verse 33 (padma.2.83.33)

पद्मयोनिर्महातेजाः सार्धं मुनिवरैस्तदा । आतिथ्यं च चकारास्य पाद्यार्घादि सुविष्टरैः

padmayonirmahātejāḥ sārdhaṁ munivaraistadā ātithyaṁ ca cakārāsya pādyārghādi suviṣṭaraiḥ

There the lotus-born Brahma, of great splendor, together with the finest sages -

Verse 34 (padma.2.83.34)

उवाच विष्णुलोकं हि प्रयाहि त्वं स्वकर्मणा । एवमाभाषिते धात्रा जगाम शिवमंदिरम्

uvāca viṣṇulokaṁ hi prayāhi tvaṁ svakarmaṇā evamābhāṣite dhātrā jagāma śivamaṁdiram

- offered him fine hospitality with water for the feet, the arghya offering, and excellent seats; and said: "Now go on, by your own merit, to the world of Vishnu."

Verse 35 (padma.2.83.35)

चक्रे आतिथ्यपूजां च उमया सह शंकरः । तस्यै वापि नृपेंद्रस्य राजानमिदमब्रवीत्

cakre ātithyapūjāṁ ca umayā saha śaṁkaraḥ tasyai vāpi nṛpeṁdrasya rājānamidamabravīt

Thus addressed by the Creator, he went to Shiva's abode. Shankara, together with Uma, extended to him hospitality and honor.

Verse 36 (padma.2.83.36)

कृष्णभक्तोसि राजेंद्र ममापि सुप्रियो भवान् । ततो ययाते राजेंद्र वस त्वं मम मंदिरम्

kṛṣṇabhaktosi rājeṁdra mamāpi supriyo bhavān tato yayāte rājeṁdra vasa tvaṁ mama maṁdiram

To that very lord of kings he said: "You are a devotee of Krishna, O king of kings, and you are exceedingly dear to me as well."

Verse 37 (padma.2.83.37)

सर्वान्भोगान्प्रभुंक्ष्व त्वं दुःखप्राप्यान्हि मानुषैः । अंतरं नास्ति राजेंद्र मम विष्णोर्न संशयः

sarvānbhogānprabhuṁkṣva tvaṁ duḥkhaprāpyānhi mānuṣaiḥ aṁtaraṁ nāsti rājeṁdra mama viṣṇorna saṁśayaḥ

"'Therefore, O Yayati, O king of kings, dwell in my abode. Enjoy here all pleasures difficult for men to attain.'"

Verse 38 (padma.2.83.38)

योसौ विष्णुस्वरूपेण स वै रुद्रो न संशयः । यो रुद्रो विद्यते राजन्स च विष्णुः सनातनः

yosau viṣṇusvarūpeṇa sa vai rudro na saṁśayaḥ yo rudro vidyate rājansa ca viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ

"'There is no difference, O king of kings, between me and Vishnu, without doubt. He who has the very form of Vishnu is indeed Rudra himself -'"

Verse 39 (padma.2.83.39)

उभयोरंतरं नास्ति तस्माच्चैव वदाम्यहम् । विष्णुभक्तस्य पुण्यस्य स्थानमेव ददाम्यहम्

ubhayoraṁtaraṁ nāsti tasmāccaiva vadāmyaham viṣṇubhaktasya puṇyasya sthānameva dadāmyaham

"'- and he who exists as Rudra, O king, is that very eternal Vishnu. Between the two there is no difference; therefore I say this -'"

Verse 40 (padma.2.83.40)

तस्मादत्र महाराज स्थातव्यं हि त्वयानघ । एवमुक्तः शिवेनापि ययातिर्हरिवल्लभः

tasmādatra mahārāja sthātavyaṁ hi tvayānagha evamuktaḥ śivenāpi yayātirharivallabhaḥ

"'I give you here the very abode of a meritorious devotee of Vishnu. Therefore, O great king, O sinless one, you must dwell here.'"

Verse 41 (padma.2.83.41)

भक्त्या प्रणम्य देवेशं शंकरं नतकंधरः । एतत्सर्वं महादेव त्वयोक्तमिह सांप्रतम्

bhaktyā praṇamya deveśaṁ śaṁkaraṁ natakaṁdharaḥ etatsarvaṁ mahādeva tvayoktamiha sāṁpratam

Thus addressed even by Shiva, Yayati, beloved of Hari, bowing his head in devotion to the lord of gods, Shankara -

Verse 42 (padma.2.83.42)

युवयोरंतरं नास्ति एका मूर्तिर्द्विधाभवत् । वैष्णवं गंतुमिच्छामि पादौ तव नमाम्यहम्

yuvayoraṁtaraṁ nāsti ekā mūrtirdvidhābhavat vaiṣṇavaṁ gaṁtumicchāmi pādau tava namāmyaham

"'O great god, all this you have now told me. Between you two there is no difference; one form has become two. I wish to go to the Vaishnava world; I bow at your feet.'"

Verse 43 (padma.2.83.43)

एवमस्तु महाराज गच्छ लोकं तु वैष्णवम् । समादिष्टः शिवेनापि प्रतस्थे वसुधाधिपः

evamastu mahārāja gaccha lokaṁ tu vaiṣṇavam samādiṣṭaḥ śivenāpi pratasthe vasudhādhipaḥ

"'So be it, great king; go to the Vaishnava world.'" Thus commanded by Shiva himself, the lord of the earth set out.

Verse 44 (padma.2.83.44)

पृथ्वीशस्तैर्महापुण्यैर्वैष्णवैर्विष्णुवल्लभैः । नृत्यमानैस्ततस्तैस्तु पुरतस्तस्य भूपतेः

pṛthvīśastairmahāpuṇyairvaiṣṇavairviṣṇuvallabhaiḥ nṛtyamānaistatastaistu puratastasya bhūpateḥ

With those greatly meritorious Vaishnavas, dear to Vishnu, dancing before that lord of the earth -

Verse 45 (padma.2.83.45)

शंखशब्दैः सुपापघ्नैः सिंहनादैः सुपुष्कलैः । जगाम निःस्वनै राजा पूज्यमानः सुचारणैः

śaṁkhaśabdaiḥ supāpaghnaiḥ siṁhanādaiḥ supuṣkalaiḥ jagāma niḥsvanai rājā pūjyamānaḥ sucāraṇaiḥ

- with sin-destroying conch-sounds, with abundant lion-roars of acclaim, amid resounding cries, honored by fine bards, the king went on -

Verse 46 (padma.2.83.46)

सुस्वरैर्गीयमानस्तु पाठकैः शास्त्रकोविदैः । गायंति पुरतस्तस्य गंधर्वा गीततत्पराः

susvarairgīyamānastu pāṭhakaiḥ śāstrakovidaiḥ gāyaṁti puratastasya gaṁdharvā gītatatparāḥ

- sung of in sweet tones by reciters skilled in the shastras; before him, gandharvas devoted to song were singing.

Verse 47 (padma.2.83.47)

ऋषिभिः स्तूयमानश्च देववृंदैः समन्वितैः । अप्सरोभिः सुरूपाभिः सेव्यमानः स नाहुषिः

ṛṣibhiḥ stūyamānaśca devavṛṁdaiḥ samanvitaiḥ apsarobhiḥ surūpābhiḥ sevyamānaḥ sa nāhuṣiḥ

Praised by sages, accompanied by hosts of gods, served by lovely apsaras - that son of Nahusha,

Verse 48 (padma.2.83.48)

गंधर्वैः किन्नरैः सिद्धैश्चारणैः पुण्यमंगलैः । साध्यैर्विद्याधरै राजा मरुद्भिर्वसुभिस्तथा

gaṁdharvaiḥ kinnaraiḥ siddhaiścāraṇaiḥ puṇyamaṁgalaiḥ sādhyairvidyādharai rājā marudbhirvasubhistathā

honored by gandharvas, kinnaras, siddhas, and auspicious charanas, by sadhyas, vidyadharas, and likewise by the maruts and vasus,

Verse 49 (padma.2.83.49)

रुद्रैश्चादित्यवर्गैश्च लोकपालैर्दिगीश्वरैः । स्तूयमानो महाराजस्त्रैलोक्येन समंततः

rudraiścādityavargaiśca lokapālairdigīśvaraiḥ stūyamāno mahārājastrailokyena samaṁtataḥ

praised by the rudras, the classes of adityas, the guardians of the world, and the lords of the directions, that great king, honored on every side by all three worlds,

Verse 50 (padma.2.83.50)

ददृशे वैष्णवं लोकमनौपम्यमनामयम् । विमानैः कांचनै राजन्सर्वशोभासमाविलैः

dadṛśe vaiṣṇavaṁ lokamanaupamyamanāmayam vimānaiḥ kāṁcanai rājansarvaśobhāsamāvilaiḥ

beheld the Vaishnava world, matchless and free of affliction - with golden celestial vehicles, O king, filled with every kind of splendor,

Verse 51 (padma.2.83.51)

हंसकुंदेंदुधवलैर्विमानैरुपशोभितैः । प्रासादैः शतभौमैश्च मेरुमंदरसंनिभैः

haṁsakuṁdeṁdudhavalairvimānairupaśobhitaiḥ prāsādaiḥ śatabhaumaiśca merumaṁdarasaṁnibhaiḥ

adorned with celestial vehicles white as swans, jasmine, and the moon, with palaces of a hundred stories, resembling Meru and Mandara,

Verse 52 (padma.2.83.52)

शिखरैरुल्लिखद्भिश्च स्वर्व्योमहाटकान्वितैः । जाज्वल्यमानैः कलशैः शोभते सुपुरोत्तमम्

śikharairullikhadbhiśca svarvyomahāṭakānvitaiḥ jājvalyamānaiḥ kalaśaiḥ śobhate supurottamam

with peaks that seemed to touch the sky, filled with golden heavenly expanses, gleaming with blazing pinnacles - that most excellent city shone.

Verse 53 (padma.2.83.53)

तारागणैर्यथाकाशं तेजः श्रिया प्रकाशते । प्रज्वलत्तेजोज्वालाभिर्लोचनैरिव लोकते

tārāgaṇairyathākāśaṁ tejaḥ śriyā prakāśate prajvalattejojvālābhirlocanairiva lokate

As the sky is illumined with radiance and beauty by its multitude of stars, so this place, blazing with flames of splendor, seemed to gaze forth as if with eyes.

Verse 54 (padma.2.83.54)

नानारत्नैर्हरेर्लोकः प्रहसद्दशनैरिव । समाह्वयति तान्पुण्यान्वैष्णवान्विष्णुवल्लभान्

nānāratnairharerlokaḥ prahasaddaśanairiva samāhvayati tānpuṇyānvaiṣṇavānviṣṇuvallabhān

The world of Hari, resplendent with many jewels, seemed with its laughing teeth to be calling out to those meritorious Vaishnavas dear to Vishnu.

Verse 55 (padma.2.83.55)

ध्वज व्याजेन राजेंद्र चलिताग्रैः सुपल्लवैः । श्वसनांदोलितैस्तैश्च ध्वजाग्रैश्च मनोहरैः

dhvaja vyājena rājeṁdra calitāgraiḥ supallavaiḥ śvasanāṁdolitaistaiśca dhvajāgraiśca manoharaiḥ

O king of kings, through the pretext of its banners, their tips fluttering with fine fronds, moved by the wind, those charming banner-tips -

हेमदंडैश्च घंटाभिः सर्वत्रसमलंकृतम् । सूर्यतेजः प्रकाशैश्च गोपुराट्टालकैस्ततः

hemadaṁḍaiśca ghaṁṭābhiḥ sarvatrasamalaṁkṛtam sūryatejaḥ prakāśaiśca gopurāṭṭālakaistataḥ

- adorned everywhere with golden staffs and bells, with gate-towers and turrets shining like the radiance of the sun,

गवाक्षैर्जालमालैश्च वातायनमनोहरैः । प्रतोलीनां प्रकाशैश्च प्राकारैर्हेमरूपकैः

gavākṣairjālamālaiśca vātāyanamanoharaiḥ pratolīnāṁ prakāśaiśca prākārairhemarūpakaiḥ

with lattice-windows and garlands of nets, charming casements, with radiant streets, and ramparts of golden form,

तोरणैः सुपताकाभिर्नानाशब्दैः सुमंगलैः । कलशाग्रैश्चक्रबिंबै रविबिंबसमप्रभैः

toraṇaiḥ supatākābhirnānāśabdaiḥ sumaṁgalaiḥ kalaśāgraiścakrabiṁbai ravibiṁbasamaprabhaiḥ

with archways and fine banners, with various auspicious sounds, with pinnacle-tops and disc-emblems bright as the orb of the sun,

सुभोगैः शतकक्षैश्च निर्जलांबुदसन्निभैः । दंडच्छत्रसमाकीर्णैः कलशैरुपशोभितैः

subhogaiḥ śatakakṣaiśca nirjalāṁbudasannibhaiḥ daṁḍacchatrasamākīrṇaiḥ kalaśairupaśobhitaiḥ

with fine mansions of a hundred chambers, resembling rainless clouds, filled with staffs and parasols, adorned with pinnacles,

प्रावृट्कालांबुदाकारैर्मदिरैरुपशोभितैः । कलशैः शोभमानैस्तैर्ऋक्षैर्द्यौरिव भूतलम्

prāvṛṭkālāṁbudākārairmadirairupaśobhitaiḥ kalaśaiḥ śobhamānaistairṛkṣairdyauriva bhūtalam

shining with pinnacles like the clouds of the monsoon season, adorned with beauty - as if the sky itself, filled with stars, had descended upon the earth,

दंडजालपताकाभिर्ऋक्षजालसमप्रभैः । तादृशैः स्फाटिकाकारैः कांतिशंखेंदुसन्निभैः

daṁḍajālapatākābhirṛkṣajālasamaprabhaiḥ tādṛśaiḥ sphāṭikākāraiḥ kāṁtiśaṁkheṁdusannibhaiḥ

with nets of staffs and banners bright as clusters of stars, crystal-formed, radiant as the conch and the moon,

हेमप्रासादसंबाधैर्नानाधातुमयैस्ततः । विमानैरर्बुदसंख्यैः शतकोटिसहस्रकैः

hemaprāsādasaṁbādhairnānādhātumayaistataḥ vimānairarbudasaṁkhyaiḥ śatakoṭisahasrakaiḥ

crowded with golden palaces, made of various metals, filled with celestial vehicles numbering in the tens of millions,

Verse 63 (padma.2.83.63)

सर्वभोगयुतैश्चैव शोभते हरिपत्तनम् । यैः समाराधितो देवः शंखचक्रगदाधरः

sarvabhogayutaiścaiva śobhate haripattanam yaiḥ samārādhito devaḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ

filled with every kind of enjoyment - thus shone the city of Hari, wherein the god who bears the conch, discus, and mace is worshipped.

Verse 64 (padma.2.83.64)

ते प्रसादात्तस्य तेषु निवसंति गृहेषु च । सर्वपुण्येषु दिव्येषु भोगाढ्येषु च मानवाः

te prasādāttasya teṣu nivasaṁti gṛheṣu ca sarvapuṇyeṣu divyeṣu bhogāḍhyeṣu ca mānavāḥ

By his grace, in those homes, in all those meritorious, divine, and pleasure-rich dwellings, dwell the people -

वैष्णवाः पुण्यकर्माणो निर्धूताशेषकल्मषाः । एवंविधैर्गृहैः पुण्यैः शोभितं विष्णुमंदिरम्

vaiṣṇavāḥ puṇyakarmāṇo nirdhūtāśeṣakalmaṣāḥ evaṁvidhairgṛhaiḥ puṇyaiḥ śobhitaṁ viṣṇumaṁdiram

- Vaishnavas of meritorious deeds, cleansed of every taint. Adorned with such meritorious homes shone that city of Vishnu,

Verse 66 (padma.2.83.66)

नानावृक्षैः समाकीर्णं वनैश्चंदनशोभितैः । सर्वकामफलै राजन्सर्वत्र समलंकृतम्

nānāvṛkṣaiḥ samākīrṇaṁ vanaiścaṁdanaśobhitaiḥ sarvakāmaphalai rājansarvatra samalaṁkṛtam

filled with various trees, with groves adorned with sandalwood; adorned everywhere, O king, with trees granting every desired fruit,

Verse 67 (padma.2.83.67)

वापीकुंडतडागैश्च सारसैरुपशोभितैः । हंसकारंडवाकीर्णैः कल्हारैरुपशोभितैः

vāpīkuṁḍataḍāgaiśca sārasairupaśobhitaiḥ haṁsakāraṁḍavākīrṇaiḥ kalhārairupaśobhitaiḥ

with step-wells, pools, and lakes adorned with cranes, thronged with swans and karandava birds, adorned with kalhara flowers,

शतपत्रैर्महापद्मैः पद्मोत्पलविराजितैः । कनकोत्पलवर्णैश्च सरोभिश्च विराजते

śatapatrairmahāpadmaiḥ padmotpalavirājitaiḥ kanakotpalavarṇaiśca sarobhiśca virājate

with hundred-petaled great lotuses, resplendent with lotuses and lilies, and gleaming with lakes the color of golden lotuses -

वैकुंठं सर्वशोभाढ्यं देवोद्यानैरलंकृतम् । दिव्यशोभासमाकीर्णं वैष्णवैरुपशोभितम्

vaikuṁṭhaṁ sarvaśobhāḍhyaṁ devodyānairalaṁkṛtam divyaśobhāsamākīrṇaṁ vaiṣṇavairupaśobhitam

- Vaikuntha, filled with every splendor, adorned with the gardens of the gods, filled with divine beauty and adorned by its Vaishnavas.

Verse 70 (padma.2.83.70)

वैकुंठं ददृशे राजा मोक्षस्थानमनुत्तमम् । देववृंदैः समाकीर्णं ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः

vaikuṁṭhaṁ dadṛśe rājā mokṣasthānamanuttamam devavṛṁdaiḥ samākīrṇaṁ yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ

The king beheld that Vaikuntha, the supreme abode of liberation, thronged with hosts of gods. Yayati, son of Nahusha -

Verse 71 (padma.2.83.71)

प्रविवेश पुरं रम्यं सर्वदाहविवर्जितम् । ददृशे सर्वक्लेशघ्नं नारायणमनामयम्

praviveśa puraṁ ramyaṁ sarvadāhavivarjitam dadṛśe sarvakleśaghnaṁ nārāyaṇamanāmayam

- entered that lovely city, entirely free of all burning, and beheld the unafflicted Narayana, destroyer of every affliction,

Verse 72 (padma.2.83.72)

विमानैरुपशोभंतं सर्वाभरणशालिनम् । पीतवासं जगन्नाथं श्रीवत्सांकं महाद्युतिम्

vimānairupaśobhaṁtaṁ sarvābharaṇaśālinam pītavāsaṁ jagannāthaṁ śrīvatsāṁkaṁ mahādyutim

adorned with celestial vehicles, resplendent with every ornament, clad in yellow, lord of the universe, marked with the Shrivatsa, of great radiance,

वैनतेयसमारूढं श्रियायुक्तं परात्परम् । सर्वेषां देवलोकानां यो गतिः परमेश्वरः

vainateyasamārūḍhaṁ śriyāyuktaṁ parātparam sarveṣāṁ devalokānāṁ yo gatiḥ parameśvaraḥ

mounted upon Garuda, endowed with Shri, higher than the highest, who is the very destiny and supreme lord of all the worlds of the gods,

परमानंदरूपेण कैवल्येन विराजते । सेव्यमानं महालोकैः सुपुण्यैर्वैष्णवैर्हरिम्

paramānaṁdarūpeṇa kaivalyena virājate sevyamānaṁ mahālokaiḥ supuṇyairvaiṣṇavairharim

shining in the form of supreme bliss, adorned with absolute oneness, that Hari served by great, most meritorious worlds and Vaishnavas,

देववृंदैः समाकीर्णं गंधर्वगणसेवितम् । अप्सरोभिर्महात्मानं दुःखक्लेशापहं हरिम्

devavṛṁdaiḥ samākīrṇaṁ gaṁdharvagaṇasevitam apsarobhirmahātmānaṁ duḥkhakleśāpahaṁ harim

thronged with hosts of gods, served by troops of gandharvas and by apsaras - that great soul, Hari, remover of sorrow and affliction -

Verse 76 (padma.2.83.76)

नारायणं ननामाथ स्वपत्न्या सह भूपतिः । प्रणेमुर्मानवाः सर्वे वैष्णवा मधुसूदनम्

nārāyaṇaṁ nanāmātha svapatnyā saha bhūpatiḥ praṇemurmānavāḥ sarve vaiṣṇavā madhusūdanam

- the king, together with his wife, bowed to Narayana; all those human Vaishnavas bowed down to Madhusudana.

Verse 77 (padma.2.83.77)

गता ये वैष्णवाः सर्वे सह राज्ञा महामते । पादांबुजद्वयं तस्य नेमुर्भक्त्या महामते

gatā ye vaiṣṇavāḥ sarve saha rājñā mahāmate pādāṁbujadvayaṁ tasya nemurbhaktyā mahāmate

O great sage, all those Vaishnavas who had gone there together with the king bowed with devotion to his two lotus feet.

Verse 78 (padma.2.83.78)

प्रणमंतं महात्मानं राजानं दीप्ततेजसम् । तमुवाच हृषीकेशस्तुष्टोऽहं तव सुव्रत

praṇamaṁtaṁ mahātmānaṁ rājānaṁ dīptatejasam tamuvāca hṛṣīkeśastuṣṭo'haṁ tava suvrata

To that great and radiant king, bowing before him, Hrishikesha said: "I am pleased with you, O one of good vows."

Verse 79 (padma.2.83.79)

वरं वरय राजेंद्र यत्ते मनसि वर्तते । तत्ते ददाम्यसंदेहं मद्भक्तोसि महामते

varaṁ varaya rājeṁdra yatte manasi vartate tatte dadāmyasaṁdehaṁ madbhaktosi mahāmate

"'Choose a boon, O king of kings, whatever is in your mind; that I shall surely give you, O wise one, for you are my devotee.'"

Verse 80 (padma.2.83.80)

राजोवाच यदि त्वं देवदेवेश तुष्टोसि मधुसूदन । दासत्वं देहि सततमात्मनश्च जगत्पते

rājovāca yadi tvaṁ devadeveśa tuṣṭosi madhusūdana dāsatvaṁ dehi satatamātmanaśca jagatpate

The king said: "O lord of gods, Madhusudana, if you are pleased, grant me, O lord of the world, eternal servitude to yourself."

Verse 81 (padma.2.83.81)

विष्णुरुवाच- एवमस्तु महाभाग मम भक्तो न संशयः । लोके मम महाराज स्थातव्यमनया सह

viṣṇuruvāca- evamastu mahābhāga mama bhakto na saṁśayaḥ loke mama mahārāja sthātavyamanayā saha

Vishnu said: "So be it, O most fortunate one; you are without doubt my devotee. In this world of mine, great king, you must dwell together with her."

Verse 82 (padma.2.83.82)

एवमुक्तो महाराजो ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः । प्रसादात्तस्य देवस्य विष्णुलोकं प्रसाधितम्

evamukto mahārājo yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ prasādāttasya devasya viṣṇulokaṁ prasādhitam

Thus addressed, the great King Yayati, by the grace of that god, attained the perfected world of Vishnu.

Verse 83 (padma.2.83.83)

निवसत्येष भूपालो वैष्णवं लोकमुत्तमम्

nivasatyeṣa bhūpālo vaiṣṇavaṁ lokamuttamam

This king dwells there still, in that most excellent Vaishnava world.
