Verse 1 (padma.2.90.1)

सूतउवाच- एवमाकर्ण्य तत्सर्वं समुज्ज्वलस्य भाषितम् । कुंजलः स हि धर्मात्मा प्रत्युवाच सुतं प्रति

sūtauvāca- evamākarṇya tatsarvaṁ samujjvalasya bhāṣitam kuṁjalaḥ sa hi dharmātmā pratyuvāca sutaṁ prati

Suta said: "Having heard all this spoken by Samujjvala, the righteous Kunjala then replied to his son."

Verse 2 (padma.2.90.2)

कुंजल उवाच- संप्रवक्ष्याम्यहं तात श्रूयतां स्थिरमानसः । सर्वसंदेहविध्वंसं चरित्रं पापनाशनम्

kuṁjala uvāca- saṁpravakṣyāmyahaṁ tāta śrūyatāṁ sthiramānasaḥ sarvasaṁdehavidhvaṁsaṁ caritraṁ pāpanāśanam

Kunjala said: "I shall now declare it; listen with a steady mind - this story destroys all doubt, and removes sin."

Verse 3 (padma.2.90.3)

इंद्रलोके प्रववृते संवादो देव कौतुकः । सभायां तस्य देवस्य इंद्रस्यापि महात्मनः

iṁdraloke pravavṛte saṁvādo deva kautukaḥ sabhāyāṁ tasya devasya iṁdrasyāpi mahātmanaḥ

"In Indra's world there once took place a wondrous, curious divine conversation, in the assembly hall of that great-souled god Indra."

Verse 4 (padma.2.90.4)

देवं द्रष्टुं सहस्राक्षं नारदस्त्वरितं ययौ । समागतं सहस्राक्षः सूर्यतेजःसमप्रभम्

devaṁ draṣṭuṁ sahasrākṣaṁ nāradastvaritaṁ yayau samāgataṁ sahasrākṣaḥ sūryatejaḥsamaprabham

"Narada went swiftly to see that thousand-eyed god; the thousand-eyed one beheld him arriving, radiant as the very splendor of the sun."

Verse 5 (padma.2.90.5)

तं दृष्ट्वा हर्षमायातः समुत्थाय महामतिः । ददावर्घं च पाद्यं च भक्त्या प्रणतमानसः

taṁ dṛṣṭvā harṣamāyātaḥ samutthāya mahāmatiḥ dadāvarghaṁ ca pādyaṁ ca bhaktyā praṇatamānasaḥ

"Seeing him, filled with joy, that greatly wise Indra rose up; with devotion, his mind bowed, he offered the arghya and water for the feet."

Verse 6 (padma.2.90.6)

बद्धांजलिपुटोभूत्वा प्रणाममकरोत्तदा । आसने कोमले पुण्ये विनिवेश्य द्विजोत्तमम्

baddhāṁjalipuṭobhūtvā praṇāmamakarottadā āsane komale puṇye viniveśya dvijottamam

"With joined palms he then made his obeisance; having seated that best of brahmins on a soft, holy seat -"

Verse 7 (padma.2.90.7)

पप्रच्छ प्रणतो भूत्वा श्रद्धया परया युतः । कस्माच्चागमनं तेऽद्य कारणं वद सांप्रतम्

papraccha praṇato bhūtvā śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ kasmāccāgamanaṁ te'dya kāraṇaṁ vada sāṁpratam

"- filled with the highest reverence, bowing, he asked: 'What is the reason for your coming today? Tell me now.'"

Verse 8 (padma.2.90.8)

इत्युक्तो देवराजेन प्रत्युवाच महामुनिः । भवंतं द्रष्टुमायातः पृथिव्यास्तु पुरंदरः

ityukto devarājena pratyuvāca mahāmuniḥ bhavaṁtaṁ draṣṭumāyātaḥ pṛthivyāstu puraṁdaraḥ

Thus addressed by the king of gods, the great sage replied: "'Purandara has come from the earth to see you -'"

Verse 9 (padma.2.90.9)

स्नात्वा पुण्यप्रदेशेषु तीर्थेषु च सुश्रद्धया । देवान्पितॄन्समभ्यर्च्य दृष्ट्वा तीर्थान्यनेकशः

snātvā puṇyapradeśeṣu tīrtheṣu ca suśraddhayā devānpitṝnsamabhyarcya dṛṣṭvā tīrthānyanekaśaḥ

"'- having bathed with great devotion in holy places and at sacred fords, having worshipped the gods and the ancestors, and having beheld many tirthas -'"

Verse 10 (padma.2.90.10)

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यत्त्वया पृच्छितं पुरा । देवेंद्र उवाच- दृष्टानि पुण्यतीर्थानि सुक्षेत्राणि त्वया मुने

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yattvayā pṛcchitaṁ purā deveṁdra uvāca- dṛṣṭāni puṇyatīrthāni sukṣetrāṇi tvayā mune

"'- all this I have told you, that which you asked me before.'" The lord of gods said: "O sage, you have seen the meritorious tirthas and excellent holy sites -"

Verse 11 (padma.2.90.11)

किं तीर्थं प्राप्य मुच्येत ब्रह्मघ्नो ब्रह्महत्यया । सुरापोमुच्यतेपापाद्गोघ्नोहेमापहारकः

kiṁ tīrthaṁ prāpya mucyeta brahmaghno brahmahatyayā surāpomucyatepāpādgoghnohemāpahārakaḥ

"'- by attaining which tirtha is a killer of brahmins freed from that sin? How is a drinker of liquor freed from sin, or a killer of cows, or a thief of gold -'"

Verse 12 (padma.2.90.12)

स्वामिद्रोहान्महाभाग नारीहंता कथं सुखी । नारद उवाच- यानि कानि च तीर्थानि गयादीनि सुरेश्वर

svāmidrohānmahābhāga nārīhaṁtā kathaṁ sukhī nārada uvāca- yāni kāni ca tīrthāni gayādīni sureśvara

"'- O most fortunate one, how does a betrayer of his lord, or a slayer of women, become happy again?'" Narada said: "O lord of the gods, whatever tirthas there are, such as Gaya and others -"

Verse 13 (padma.2.90.13)

तेषां नैव प्रजानामि विशेषं पापनाशनम् । सुपुण्यानि सुदिव्यानि पापघ्नानि समानि च

teṣāṁ naiva prajānāmi viśeṣaṁ pāpanāśanam supuṇyāni sudivyāni pāpaghnāni samāni ca

"'- I do not know any special one among them for the destruction of sin; they are all most meritorious, divine, and equally destroyers of sin.'"

Verse 14 (padma.2.90.14)

सर्वाण्येव सुतीर्थानि जानाम्यहं पुरंदर । अविशेषं विशेषं वै नैव जानामि सांप्रतम्

sarvāṇyeva sutīrthāni jānāmyahaṁ puraṁdara aviśeṣaṁ viśeṣaṁ vai naiva jānāmi sāṁpratam

"'I know all of them, O Purandara, to be excellent tirthas; but I do not now know any distinction between the ordinary and the special.'"

Verse 15 (padma.2.90.15)

प्रत्ययं क्रियतां देव तीर्थानां गतिदायकम् । एवमाकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं नारदस्य महात्मनः

pratyayaṁ kriyatāṁ deva tīrthānāṁ gatidāyakam evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ nāradasya mahātmanaḥ

"'Let a demonstration be made, O god, of the tirthas' power to grant liberation.'" Having heard these words of the great-souled Narada -

Verse 16 (padma.2.90.16)

समाहूतानि चेंद्रेण तीर्थानि भूगतानि च । मूर्तिवर्तीनि दिव्यानि समायातानि शासनात्

samāhūtāni ceṁdreṇa tīrthāni bhūgatāni ca mūrtivartīni divyāni samāyātāni śāsanāt

- Indra summoned all the tirthas existing on the earth; embodied and divine, they came at his command.

Verse 17 (padma.2.90.17)

बद्धांजलीनि दिव्यानि भूषितानि सुभूषणैः । दिव्यांबराणि स्निग्धानि तेजोवंति च सुव्रत

baddhāṁjalīni divyāni bhūṣitāni subhūṣaṇaiḥ divyāṁbarāṇi snigdhāni tejovaṁti ca suvrata

With joined palms, divine, adorned with fine ornaments, wearing soft divine garments, radiant, O one of good vows -

Verse 18 (padma.2.90.18)

स्त्रीपुंसोश्च स्वरूपाणि कृतानि च विशेषतः । हेमचंदनकाशानि दिव्यरूपधराणि च

strīpuṁsośca svarūpāṇi kṛtāni ca viśeṣataḥ hemacaṁdanakāśāni divyarūpadharāṇi ca

- their forms made specifically as both women and men, of a hue like gold and sandal, bearing divine forms -

Verse 19 (padma.2.90.19)

मुक्ताफलस्यवर्णेन प्रभासंति नरेश्वर । तप्तकांचनवर्णानि सारुण्यानि च तत्र वै

muktāphalasyavarṇena prabhāsaṁti nareśvara taptakāṁcanavarṇāni sāruṇyāni ca tatra vai

- shining, O lord of men, with the color of pearls; some there were the color of molten gold, and red-tinted,

कति शुक्ल सुपीतानि प्रभावंति सभांतरे । कानि पद्मनिभान्येव मूर्तिवर्तीनि तानि तु

kati śukla supītāni prabhāvaṁti sabhāṁtare kāni padmanibhānyeva mūrtivartīni tāni tu

some white, some yellow, shining within the assembly; some like lotuses, all embodied,

Verse 21 (padma.2.90.21)

सूर्यतेजः प्रकाशानि तडित्तेजः समानि च । पावकाभानि चान्यानि प्रभासंति सभांतरे

sūryatejaḥ prakāśāni taḍittejaḥ samāni ca pāvakābhāni cānyāni prabhāsaṁti sabhāṁtare

some radiant as the splendor of the sun, equal to the radiance of lightning; others shone like fire within the assembly.

Verse 22 (padma.2.90.22)

सर्वाभरणशोभाढ्यैः प्रशोभंते नरेश्वर । हारकंकणकेयूरमालाभिस्तु सुचंदनैः

sarvābharaṇaśobhāḍhyaiḥ praśobhaṁte nareśvara hārakaṁkaṇakeyūramālābhistu sucaṁdanaiḥ

They shone, O lord of men, resplendent with every ornament, with necklaces, bracelets, armlets, garlands, and fine sandal-paste,

Verse 23 (padma.2.90.23)

दिव्यचंदनदिग्धानि सुरभीणि गुरूणि च । कमंडलुकराण्येव आयातानि सभांतरे

divyacaṁdanadigdhāni surabhīṇi gurūṇi ca kamaṁḍalukarāṇyeva āyātāni sabhāṁtare

anointed with divine sandal-paste, fragrant and weighty; they came into the assembly, water-vessels in hand.

गंगा च नर्मदा पुण्या चंद्रभागा सरस्वती । देविका बिंबिका कुब्जा कुंजला मंजुला श्रुता

gaṁgā ca narmadā puṇyā caṁdrabhāgā sarasvatī devikā biṁbikā kubjā kuṁjalā maṁjulā śrutā

The Ganga, and the holy Narmada, Chandrabhaga, Sarasvati, Devika, Bimbika, Kubja, Kunjala, Manjula, Shruta,

रंभा भानुमती पुण्या पारा चैव सुघर्घरा । शोणा च सिंधुसौवीरा कावेरी कपिला तथा

raṁbhā bhānumatī puṇyā pārā caiva sughargharā śoṇā ca siṁdhusauvīrā kāverī kapilā tathā

Rambha, the holy Bhanumati, Para, and Sugharghara, the Shona, Sindhu-Sauvira, the Kaveri, and Kapila too,

कुमुदा वेदनदी पुण्या सुपुण्या च महेश्वरी । चर्मण्वती तथा ख्याता लोपा चान्या सुकौशिकी

kumudā vedanadī puṇyā supuṇyā ca maheśvarī carmaṇvatī tathā khyātā lopā cānyā sukauśikī

Kumuda, the holy Vedanadi, the most holy Maheshvari, the renowned Charmanvati, and Lopa, and another, Sukaushiki,

सुहंसी हंसपादा च हंसवेगा मनोरथा । सुरुथास्वारुणा वेणा भद्र वेणा सुपद्मिनी

suhaṁsī haṁsapādā ca haṁsavegā manorathā suruthāsvāruṇā veṇā bhadra veṇā supadminī

नाहलीसुमरी चान्या पुण्या चान्या पुलिंदिका । हेमा मनोरथा दिव्या चंद्रिका वेदसंक्रमा

nāhalīsumarī cānyā puṇyā cānyā puliṁdikā hemā manorathā divyā caṁdrikā vedasaṁkramā

Nahali, Sumari, and another holy one, Pulindika, Hema, the divine Manoratha, Chandrika, Vedasankrama,

ज्वालाहुताशनी स्वाहा काला चैव कपिंजला । स्वधा च सुकला लिंगा गंभीरा भीमवाहिनी

jvālāhutāśanī svāhā kālā caiva kapiṁjalā svadhā ca sukalā liṁgā gaṁbhīrā bhīmavāhinī

देवद्रीची वीरवाहा लक्षहोमा अघापहा । पाराशरी हेमगर्भा सुभद्रा वसुपुत्रिका

devadrīcī vīravāhā lakṣahomā aghāpahā pārāśarī hemagarbhā subhadrā vasuputrikā

एता नद्यो महापुण्या मूर्तिमत्यो नरेश्वर । सर्वाभरणशोभाढ्याः कुंभहस्ताः सुपूजिताः

etā nadyo mahāpuṇyā mūrtimatyo nareśvara sarvābharaṇaśobhāḍhyāḥ kuṁbhahastāḥ supūjitāḥ

- these greatly holy rivers, O lord of men, embodied, resplendent with every ornament, water-vessels in hand, well worshipped,

प्रयागः पुष्करश्चैव अर्घदीर्घो मनोरथा । वाराणसी महापुण्या ब्रह्महत्या व्यपोहिनी

prayāgaḥ puṣkaraścaiva arghadīrgho manorathā vārāṇasī mahāpuṇyā brahmahatyā vyapohinī

Prayaga, Pushkara, Arghadirgha, Manoratha, the greatly holy Varanasi, the remover of the sin of killing a brahmin,

द्वारावती प्रभासश्च अवंती नैमिषस्तथा । चंडकश्च महारत्नो महेश्वरकलेश्वरौ

dvārāvatī prabhāsaśca avaṁtī naimiṣastathā caṁḍakaśca mahāratno maheśvarakaleśvarau

Dvaravati, Prabhasa, Avanti, and likewise Naimisha, Chandaka the great jewel, Maheshvara and Kaleshvara,

कलिंजरो ब्रह्मक्षेत्रं माथुरो मानवाहकः । मायाकांती तथान्यानि दिव्यानि विविधानि च

kaliṁjaro brahmakṣetraṁ māthuro mānavāhakaḥ māyākāṁtī tathānyāni divyāni vividhāni ca

Kalinjara, Brahmakshetra, Mathura, Manavahaka, Mayakanti, and other divine places of various kinds -

अष्टषष्टिः सुतीर्थानि नदीनां शतकोटयः । गोदावरीमुखाः सर्वा समायातास्तदाज्ञया

aṣṭaṣaṣṭiḥ sutīrthāni nadīnāṁ śatakoṭayaḥ godāvarīmukhāḥ sarvā samāyātāstadājñayā

- sixty-eight holy tirthas, hundreds of millions of rivers, all beginning with the Godavari, came by that command.

Verse 36 (padma.2.90.36)

द्वीपानां तु समस्तानि सुतीर्थानि महांति च । मूर्तिलिंगधराण्येव सहस्राक्षं सुरेश्वरम्

dvīpānāṁ tu samastāni sutīrthāni mahāṁti ca mūrtiliṁgadharāṇyeva sahasrākṣaṁ sureśvaram

All the great and holy tirthas of every continent, bearing lingas, embodied, came together to that thousand-eyed lord of the gods -

Verse 37 (padma.2.90.37)

समाजग्मुः समस्तानि तदादेशकराणि च । प्रणेमुर्देवदेवेशं नतशीर्षाणि सर्वशः

samājagmuḥ samastāni tadādeśakarāṇi ca praṇemurdevadeveśaṁ nataśīrṣāṇi sarvaśaḥ

- all obedient to his command, gathered together; they bowed their heads on every side to the lord of gods.

Verse 38 (padma.2.90.38)

सूत उवाच- तैः प्रोक्तं तु महातीर्थैर्देवराजं यशस्विनम् । कस्मात्त्वया समाहूता देवदेव वदस्व नः

sūta uvāca- taiḥ proktaṁ tu mahātīrthairdevarājaṁ yaśasvinam kasmāttvayā samāhūtā devadeva vadasva naḥ

Suta said: "By those great tirthas the renowned king of gods was addressed: 'For what reason have you summoned us, god of gods? Tell us.'"

Verse 39 (padma.2.90.39)

ब्रूहि नः कारणं सर्वं नमस्तुभ्यं सुराधिप । एवमाकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं देवराजोभ्यभाषत

brūhi naḥ kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ namastubhyaṁ surādhipa evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ devarājobhyabhāṣata

"'Tell us the whole reason; salutations to you, O lord of the gods.'" Having heard this, the king of gods spoke -

Verse 40 (padma.2.90.40)

कः समर्थो महातीर्थो ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहितुम् । गोवधाख्यं महापापं स्त्रीवधाख्यमनुत्तमम्

kaḥ samartho mahātīrtho brahmahatyāṁ vyapohitum govadhākhyaṁ mahāpāpaṁ strīvadhākhyamanuttamam

"'What great tirtha is capable of removing the killing of a brahmin? The great sin called the killing of a cow, the unsurpassed sin called the killing of a woman -'"

Verse 41 (padma.2.90.41)

स्वामिद्रोहाच्च संभूतं सुरापानाच्च दारुणम् । हेमस्तेयात्तथा जातं गुरुनिंदा समुद्भवम्

svāmidrohācca saṁbhūtaṁ surāpānācca dāruṇam hemasteyāttathā jātaṁ guruniṁdā samudbhavam

"'- the sin arising from betraying one's lord, the terrible sin from drinking liquor, that from the theft of gold, and that born from reviling one's guru -'"

Verse 42 (padma.2.90.42)

भ्रूणहत्यां महाघोरां नाशयेत्कः समर्थवान् । राजद्रोहान्महापापं बहुपीडाप्रदायकम्

bhrūṇahatyāṁ mahāghorāṁ nāśayetkaḥ samarthavān rājadrohānmahāpāpaṁ bahupīḍāpradāyakam

"'- who is capable of destroying the most terrible killing of an embryo? The great sin of betraying one's king, giver of much affliction -'"

Verse 43 (padma.2.90.43)

मित्रद्रोहात्तथा चान्यदन्यद्विश्वासघातकम् । देवभेदं तथा चान्यं लिंगभेदमतः परम्

mitradrohāttathā cānyadanyadviśvāsaghātakam devabhedaṁ tathā cānyaṁ liṁgabhedamataḥ param

"'- and likewise that arising from betraying a friend, and another, the betrayal of trust, and likewise sectarian division among the gods, and beyond that, the breaking of a linga -'"

Verse 44 (padma.2.90.44)

वृत्तिच्छेदं च विप्राणां गोप्रचारप्रणाशनम् । आगारदहनं चान्यद्गृहदीपनकं तथा

vṛtticchedaṁ ca viprāṇāṁ gopracārapraṇāśanam āgāradahanaṁ cānyadgṛhadīpanakaṁ tathā

"'- the cutting off of a brahmin's livelihood, the destruction of cattle-grazing land, and likewise the burning of a house, and setting fire to a dwelling -'"

Verse 45 (padma.2.90.45)

षोडशैते महापापा अगम्यागमनं तथा । स्वामित्यागात्समुद्भूतं रणस्थानात्पलायनात्

ṣoḍaśaite mahāpāpā agamyāgamanaṁ tathā svāmityāgātsamudbhūtaṁ raṇasthānātpalāyanāt

"'- these sixteen are the great sins, and likewise going to a forbidden woman, the sin arising from abandoning one's lord, and fleeing from the battlefield -'"

Verse 46 (padma.2.90.46)

एतानि नाशयेत्को वै समर्थस्तीर्थउत्तमः । समर्थो भवतां मध्ये प्रायश्चित्तं विना ध्रुवम्

etāni nāśayetko vai samarthastīrthauttamaḥ samartho bhavatāṁ madhye prāyaścittaṁ vinā dhruvam

"'- which excellent tirtha can destroy these? Is there any among you capable of this, without doubt, without penance?'"

Verse 47 (padma.2.90.47)

पश्यतां देवतानां च नारदस्य च पश्यतः । ब्रुवंतु सर्वे संचिंत्य विचार्यैवं सुनिश्चितम्

paśyatāṁ devatānāṁ ca nāradasya ca paśyataḥ bruvaṁtu sarve saṁciṁtya vicāryaivaṁ suniścitam

"'In the sight of the gods, and in the sight of Narada, let all of you speak, having pondered and considered this with certainty.'"

Verse 48 (padma.2.90.48)

एवमुक्ते शुभे वाक्ये देवराज्ञामहात्मना । संमंत्र्य तीर्थराजेन प्रोचुः शक्रं सभागतम्

evamukte śubhe vākye devarājñāmahātmanā saṁmaṁtrya tīrtharājena procuḥ śakraṁ sabhāgatam

Having heard this auspicious speech of the great-souled king of gods, having consulted with the king of tirthas, they spoke to Shakra, gathered in that assembly.

Verse 49 (padma.2.90.49)

तीर्थान्यूचुः - श्रूयतामभिधास्यामो देवराज नमोस्तु ते । संति वै सर्वतीर्थानि सर्वपापहराणि च

tīrthānyūcuḥ - śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmo devarāja namostu te saṁti vai sarvatīrthāni sarvapāpaharāṇi ca

The tirthas said: "Hear, O king of gods, what we shall declare; salutations to you. There are indeed all the tirthas, removers of every sin -"

Verse 50 (padma.2.90.50)

ब्रह्महत्यादिकान्यांश्च त्वया प्रोक्तान्सुरेश्वर । महाघोरान्सुदीप्तांश्च नाशितुं नैव शक्नुमः

brahmahatyādikānyāṁśca tvayā proktānsureśvara mahāghorānsudīptāṁśca nāśituṁ naiva śaknumaḥ

"'- but, O lord of the gods, the sins you have declared, such as the killing of a brahmin, most terrible and most fierce - these we are not able to destroy.'"

Verse 51 (padma.2.90.51)

प्रयागः पुष्करश्चैव अर्घतीर्थमनुत्तमम् । वाराणसी महाभाग समर्था पापनाशिनी

prayāgaḥ puṣkaraścaiva arghatīrthamanuttamam vārāṇasī mahābhāga samarthā pāpanāśinī

"'Prayaga, and Pushkara, the unsurpassed Arghya-tirtha, and, O most fortunate one, the greatly holy Varanasi - these are capable, destroyers of sin.'"

Verse 52 (padma.2.90.52)

महापातकनाशार्थे चत्वारोमितविक्रमाः । उपपातकनाशार्थं चत्वारोमितविक्रमाः

mahāpātakanāśārthe catvāromitavikramāḥ upapātakanāśārthaṁ catvāromitavikramāḥ

"'For the destruction of great sins, four are of measureless power; for the destruction of lesser sins, four are of measureless power -'"

Verse 53 (padma.2.90.53)

सृष्टा धात्रा च देवेंद्र पुष्कराद्या महाबलाः । एवमाकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं तीर्थानां सुरराट् ततः

sṛṣṭā dhātrā ca deveṁdra puṣkarādyā mahābalāḥ evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ tīrthānāṁ surarāṭ tataḥ

"'- created by the Creator, O king of gods, mighty ones beginning with Pushkara.'" Having heard these words of the tirthas, the king of gods then -

हर्षेण महताविष्टस्तेषां स्तोत्रं चकार सः

harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭasteṣāṁ stotraṁ cakāra saḥ

- filled with great joy, composed a hymn of praise to them.
