The King's Death: The Vision of Hell and the Power of Three Vaishakhas

Chapter 100All chaptersChapter 102

Verse 1 (padma.5.101.1)

yama uvāca- atha kālakaṭākṣeṇa lakṣito nṛpatistadā mṛto'tiratisevottha kṣayakṣīṇakalevaraḥ

Yama said: Then, marked by the sidelong glance of Time, the king died, his body wasted and worn away by the excess of amorous indulgence.

Verse 2 (padma.5.101.2)

nīyamāno yamagaṇaistāḍyamāno muhurmuhuḥ krandamāno mahārāvānsa smarannijapātakam

Being led away by Yama's hosts, struck again and again, crying out with great wails, he remembered his own sins.

Verse 3 (padma.5.101.3)

viṣṇudūtaiḥ samāgamya tāḍayitvā mamānugān dharmavānayamityuktvā vimānamatha ropitaḥ

But then Vishnu's messengers came upon Yama's servants, struck my attendants, and, declaring 'This one is righteous,' seated him upon a celestial car.

Verse 4 (padma.5.101.4)

nīto haripuraṁ bhūpaḥ stūyamāno'psarogaṇaiḥ prātaḥsnānena vaiśākhamāsasya kṣīṇapātakaḥ

The king, his sins diminished through the morning bathing of the month of Vaishakha, was carried toward the city of Hari, praised by hosts of apsarases.

Verse 5 (padma.5.101.5)

atha dharmavihīno'yamiti matvā ca taiḥ punaḥ devadūtairnideśena viṣṇorbhūmipatistadā adūrādeva nirayavartmanā sa samāhitaḥ

But then, those divine messengers, thinking 'This one is devoid of other dharma,' by Vishnu's own command, again redirected that lord of the earth, not far off, onto the path to hell.

Verse 6 (padma.5.101.6)

sa gacchannapi śuśrāva jīvānāṁ kraṁdatāṁ punaḥ niraye pacyamānānāmārāvaṁ vividhaṁ tadā

Even as he went, he heard again the manifold clamor of beings crying out, being cooked in hell.

Verse 7 (padma.5.101.7)

pāpināṁ kvathyamānānāmākraṁdamatidāruṇam śrutvā vismayavānvipra rājābhūdatiduḥkhitaḥ

Hearing the most terrible wailing of sinners being boiled, O Brahmin, the king was struck with astonishment and became exceedingly sorrowful.

Verse 8 (padma.5.101.8)

provāca dūtāḥ kimayamākraṁdo dāruṇaḥ śrutaḥ punarna śrūyate tanme kāraṇaṁ vaktumarhatha

He said: "O messengers, what is this terrible wailing that is heard, and then heard no more? You should tell me the reason for it."

Verse 9 (padma.5.101.9)

dūtā ūcu- jaṁtavastyaktamaryādāḥ pāpāstvācāravarjitāḥ nirayeṣu ca ghoreṣu tāmisrādiṣu pātitāḥ

The messengers said: Beings who abandoned proper bounds, sinners devoid of good conduct, have been cast down into terrible hells, beginning with Tamisra.

Verse 10 (padma.5.101.10)

kṛtapātakinastvatra prāṇatyāgādanaṁtaram yāmyaṁ paṁthānamāśritya duḥkhamaśnaṁti dāruṇam

Those who committed grievous sins, immediately after the abandonment of their life-breath, taking the path of Yama, suffer terrible torment.

Verse 11 (padma.5.101.11)

yamasya puruṣairghoraiḥ kṛṣyamāṇā itastataḥ aṁdhakāre nipatitā bhakṣyaṁte hyatidāruṇaiḥ

Dragged here and there by the terrible servants of Yama, having fallen into darkness, they are devoured indeed by most terrible creatures—

Verse 12 (padma.5.101.12)

śvabhiḥ śṛgālaiḥ kravyādaiḥ kākakaṁkabakādibhiḥ agnituṁḍairvṛkavyāghrairbhujagairvṛścikādibhiḥ

—dogs, jackals, flesh-eaters, crows, hawks, herons, and the like; by fire-mouthed wolves and tigers, serpents, scorpions, and the like.

Verse 13 (padma.5.101.13)

agninā dāhyamānāśca tudyamānāśca kaṁṭakaiḥ krakacaiḥ pāṭyamānāśca pīḍyamānāśca tṛṣṇayā

They are burned by fire, pierced by thorns, sawn apart by saws, and tormented by thirst.

Verse 14 (padma.5.101.14)

kṣudhayā bādhyamānāśca ghorairvyādhigaṇaistathā pūyaśoṇitagaṁdhena mūrchyamānāḥ padepade

They are afflicted by hunger, and likewise by hosts of terrible diseases; at every step they swoon from the stench of pus and blood.

Verse 15 (padma.5.101.15)

kvāthyaṁte ca kvacittailaistāḍyante muśalaiḥ kvacit āyasīṣu prapacyaṁte śilāsu kvacideva ca

In some places they are boiled in oil, in others beaten with pestles; in some places indeed they are cooked upon iron slabs.

Verse 16 (padma.5.101.16)

kvacidvāṁtamathāśnaṁti kvacitpūyamasṛkkvacit kvacidviṣṭhāṁ kvacinmāṁsaṁ pūtigaṁdhiṣu dāruṇam

In some places they must eat vomit, in others pus, in others blood; in some places excrement, in others terrible flesh amid putrid stenches.

Verse 17 (padma.5.101.17)

kṛmibhirbhakṣyamāṇāśca vahnituṁḍaiḥ kvacitkvacit keśaśoṇitamāṁsāsṛgvasāsthinikareṣu ca

Devoured by worms, and here and there by fire-mouthed creatures, amid heaps of hair, blood, flesh, gore, fat, and bones—

Verse 18 (padma.5.101.18)

asthitāḥ kuṇapāḥ kīrṇāḥ kṛmibhirbhakṣitāḥ sphuṭam kākakaṁkamahāgṛdhravadanairdhvaṁsiteṣu ca

—unstable, scattered corpses, plainly devoured by worms, and torn apart by the beaks of crows, hawks, and great vultures.

Verse 19 (padma.5.101.19)

śivadurgaṁdhanīraṁdhra saṁghaṭṭaśatakoṭiṣu karapatraśilāpatratapta nistailakeṣu ca

Amid the foul-smelling, dense confusion of jackals in their hundreds of millions; and amid heated stone-blade saws without oil—

Verse 20 (padma.5.101.20)

lohatailavasāstaṁbha kūṭaśālmalasadmasu kṣurakaṁṭakakīlogra jvālāstaṁbhavibhātiṣu

—in dwellings of iron pillars smeared with oil and fat, and the deceptive silk-cotton tree of hell; amid pillars of flame bristling with fierce razor-thorns and spikes—

Verse 21 (padma.5.101.21)

taptaṁ vaitaraṇīpūyapūriteṣu pṛthakpṛthak asipatravanotkṛtta naranārīstaneṣu ca

—in the heated Vaitarani river filled with pus; and amid men and women whose breasts have been sliced off in the forest of sword-leaves—

Verse 22 (padma.5.101.22)

ghorāṁdhakāragrahaṇadāruṇeṣu muhurmuhuḥ pāpacyamānāḥ kraṁdaṁto dāruṇairvividhairvadhaiḥ

—amid terrible, dreadful shrouds of darkness, again and again — being cooked in sin, crying out under manifold terrible modes of slaughter.

Verse 23 (padma.5.101.23)

kaṁṭheṣu baddhapāśāśca bhujagāveṣṭitāḥ kvacit pīḍyamānāstathā yaṁtraiḥ kṛṣyamāṇāśca jānubhiḥ

Bound with nooses at the neck, entwined by serpents in some places, tormented by machines, and dragged by their knees—

Verse 24 (padma.5.101.24)

bhagnapṛṣṭhaśirogrīvāḥ stabdhakaṁṭhāḥ sudāruṇāḥ kūṭāgāre bhrāmyamāṇāḥ śarīrairyātanākṣamaiḥ

—their backs, heads, and necks broken, their throats rigid, most terrible, whirled about within a deceptive dwelling, their bodies capable of enduring torment.

Verse 25 (padma.5.101.25)

pīḍyaṁte pāpino rājankraṁdamānā vikarmiṇaḥ sahitaṁ viṣayāsvādaiḥ kraṁdanaṁ tairvidhīyate

Thus, O king, sinners, doers of evil deeds, are tormented, crying out; that crying out of theirs is exactly matched to the sweetness of the sense-pleasures they once tasted.

Verse 26 (padma.5.101.26)

bhujyate ca kṛtaṁ pūrvametatsarvaiśca jaṁtubhiḥ parastrīṣu kṛtaḥ saṁgaḥ prītaye duḥkhado hi saḥ

And all these beings suffer what they themselves did before; union with another's wife, undertaken for pleasure, indeed brings such sorrow.

Verse 27 (padma.5.101.27)

muhūrtaviṣayāsvādo jāto'nekābdaduḥkhadaḥ vapuṣastava rājeṁdra prātaḥsnānasya mādhave

A moment's taste of sense-pleasure has become the cause of sorrow for many years. But, O lord of kings, from your body, purified by the morning bathing in Madhava—

Verse 28 (padma.5.101.28)

vidhinā pāvanasyaite prāpya sparśaṁ ca mārutaḥ labdhasaukhyāḥ kṣaṇaṁ jātā mahasāpyāyitāstava

—duly sanctified, these suffering beings, having received the touch of the very wind that had touched you, attained happiness for a moment, refreshed by your very radiance.

Verse 29 (padma.5.101.29)

ākraṁdarahitāstena jātāste niraye sthitāḥ nāmāpi puṇyaśīlānāṁ śrutaṁ saukhyāya kīrtitam

By that they became, though still dwelling in hell, free of their wailing. Even the mere name of the meritorious, when heard, is declared to bring happiness.

Verse 30 (padma.5.101.30)

jāyate tadvapusparśavāyusparśaḥ sukhāvahaḥ yama uvāca- iti dūtavacaḥ śrutvā sa rājā karuṇānidhiḥ

Thus, contact with the wind that has touched such a body becomes a bringer of happiness. Yama said: Having heard these words of the messenger, that king, an ocean of compassion—

Verse 31 (padma.5.101.31)

pratyuvāca hatāndūtānviṣṇoradbhutakarmaṇaḥ komalaṁ hṛdayaṁ nūnaṁ sādhūnāṁ navanītavat

—replied to the messengers of Vishnu, of wondrous deeds. The heart of the virtuous is truly tender, like fresh butter—

Verse 32 (padma.5.101.32)

vahnisaṁtāpasaṁtaptaṁ tadyathā dravati sphuṭam rājovāca- nārtaṁ jaṁtumahaṁ hitvā pīḍituṁ gaṁtumutsahe

—which, heated by the burning of fire, plainly melts. The king said: "I cannot bring myself to leave a suffering being in torment and go on."

Verse 33 (padma.5.101.33)

"Shame on that most sinful man who, though capable, does not remove the suffering of the afflicted! Since, by the mere touch of the wind that had brushed against my body—"

Verse 34 (padma.5.101.34)

jaṁtavaḥ sukhino jātāstasmāttatra nayaṁtu mām pavitrayaṁti jananīmavanīmapi te narāḥ

"—these beings became happy, therefore let them lead me there instead. Those men who purify the very earth, their mother—"

Verse 35 (padma.5.101.35)

paratāpacchido ye tu caṁdanā iva caṁdanam paropakṛtaye ye tu pīḍyaṁte kṛtino hi te

"—who cut away others' suffering, as sandalwood cools a fever; those accomplished ones who allow themselves to be afflicted for the sake of helping others—"

Verse 36 (padma.5.101.36)

saṁtasta eva ye loke paraduḥkhavidāraṇāḥ ārtānāmārtināśārthaṁ prāṇā yeṣāṁ tṛṇopamāḥ

"—they alone are the true saints in this world, tearers-away of others' sorrow, for whom their own life-breath is but as straw, for the sake of destroying the affliction of the afflicted."

Verse 37 (padma.5.101.37)

tairiyaṁ dhāryate bhūmirnaraiḥ parahitodyataiḥ manaso yatsukhaṁ nityaṁ tatsvargo narakopamaḥ

"By such men, ever devoted to the good of others, this earth is upheld. That constant happiness of mind — without it, even heaven is like hell."

Verse 38 (padma.5.101.38)

tasmātparasukhenaiva sukhinaḥ sādhavaḥ sadā varaṁ nirayapāto'tra varaṁ prāṇaviyojanam

"Therefore the virtuous are ever made happy only by the happiness of others. Better here to fall into hell, better even the parting of life—"

Verse 39 (padma.5.101.39)

na punaḥ kṣaṇamārtānāmārtināśamṛte sukham dūtā ūcu- jaṁtavo niraye ghore pacyaṁte tetra pāpinaḥ

"—than to have even a moment's happiness without destroying the suffering of the afflicted." The messengers said: Those beings, sinners, who are cooked there in terrible hell—

Verse 40 (padma.5.101.40)

svakarmaivopajīvaṁti mohasthānaṁ na vidyate yairna dattaṁ na ca hutaṁ tīrthe snānaṁ na vā kṛtam

—live only by their own deeds; there is no place for delusion about this. By whom nothing was given, nothing offered in fire, and no bathing at a sacred ford performed—

Verse 41 (padma.5.101.41)

punarnopakṛtaṁ bhaktyā sukṛtaṁ na kṛtaṁ param neṣṭaṁ na taptaṁ no japtaṁ yairna hṛṣṭatayā nṛpa

—by whom no benefit was ever devotedly rendered, no supreme good deed performed; by whom, O king, no sacrifice, austerity, or recitation was ever gladly undertaken—

Verse 42 (padma.5.101.42)

parasminniha ghoreṣu pacyaṁte nirayeṣu te duḥśīlā ye durācārā vihārāhāraniṁditāḥ

—they are cooked hereafter in these terrible hells; those of evil character, evil conduct, blameworthy in their pastimes and their food—

Verse 43 (padma.5.101.43)

parāpakāriṇaḥ pāpakāriṇo durvihāriṇaḥ vidāriṇo hi marmoktyā pāpāḥ parahṛdāṁ hi ye

—those who harm others, doers of sin, evil in their pursuits; sinners who, indeed, wound the hearts of others with cutting words—

Verse 44 (padma.5.101.44)

niraye te vipacyaṁte ye parastrīvihāriṇaḥ ehi nūnaṁ mahīpāla gacchāmo harimaṁdiram

—those who dally with another's wife are cooked in hell. Come, O lord of the earth, let us now go to the temple of Hari.

Verse 45 (padma.5.101.45)

"It is not fitting for you, a man of merit, to remain here — this is our final judgment." The king said: "O messengers, if I am truly virtuous, then why was I led onto this—"

Verse 46 (padma.5.101.46)

nārake pathi vā nītaḥ kiṁ vā me sukṛtaṁ param mayāpi na kṛtaṁ tādṛksukṛtaṁ kāmaśālinā

"—terrifying path to hell? And what is that supreme merit of mine? I, too, given over to desire, did not perform such full merit."

Verse 47 (padma.5.101.47)

kathaṁ puri harergaṁtā saṁśayāno'hamasmi vai dūtā ūcu- sukṛtaṁ na kṛtaṁ satyaṁ tvayā kāmavaśātmanā

"How, then, could I be one destined for the city of Hari? I am indeed in doubt about this." The messengers said: "It is true that, overcome by desire, you did not perform full merit—"

Verse 48 (padma.5.101.48)

neṣṭaṁ yajñairna vā yajñāvaśiṣṭaṁ bhavatāśitam kiṁtu mādhavamāse yadvidhinā vatsaratrayam

"—you did not sacrifice with sacrifices, nor did you eat what remained of a sacrifice. But, in the month of Madhava, that which, according to rule, for three years—"

Verse 49 (padma.5.101.49)

prātaḥ snātvā guruvacaḥ preritena purā tvayā bhaktyā saṁpūjito viṣṇurviśveśo madhusūdanaḥ

"—bathing at dawn, prompted by your guru's word, was formerly done by you: Vishnu, Lord of the universe, Madhusudana, was duly worshipped with devotion."

Verse 50 (padma.5.101.50)

mahāpāpātipāpaugha nihaṁtā bhaktavatsalaḥ sarvadharmaikasāreṇa tenaikena nareśvara

"—by that alone, the destroyer of the flood of the greatest sins, dear to his devotees — by that one thing alone, the very essence of all dharma, O lord of men—"

Verse 51 (padma.5.101.51)

nīyate puṇyabhavanaṁ pūjyamāno marudgaṇaiḥ mahatāmapi pāpānāṁ nihaṁtā mādhavo'rcitaḥ

"—you are being led to the meritorious abode, honored by the hosts of the Maruts. Madhava, when worshipped, is the destroyer even of the greatest sins."

Verse 52 (padma.5.101.52)

tathaiva mādhavo māso martyānāṁ vidhinoditaḥ yathaiva visphuliṁgena jvālyate tṛṇasaṁcayaḥ

"So too is the month of Madhava, when duly observed by mortals — just as a heap of grass is set ablaze by a single spark—"

Verse 53 (padma.5.101.53)

prātaḥsnānena vaiśākhe tathāghaugho'pi dahyate tāvadvapuṣi pāpāni prabhavaṁti mahāntyapi

"—so too, through the morning bath in Vaishakha, even a flood of sin is burned away. Sins, even great ones, hold sway over the body only so long—"

Verse 54 (padma.5.101.54)

yāvanna mādhave māsi tīrthe majjati coṣasi vaiśākhe māsi yo yukto yathoktaniyamairnaraḥ

"—as one has not immersed oneself at a sacred ford at dawn in the month of Madhava. That man who, in the month of Vaishakha, is engaged in the observances as declared—"

Verse 55 (padma.5.101.55)

haribhaktyaiva pāpaughairmukto'cyutagṛhaṁ vrajet ājanmano hi sukṛtaṁ yattvayā na purā kṛtam

"—through devotion to Hari alone, freed from the flood of sin, goes to the abode of Achyuta. Whatever merit, from your very birth, was not performed by you before—"

Verse 56 (padma.5.101.56)

tena tvaṁ nirayasthānamārgaṁ nīto nareśvara atha bhūmipate tūrṇamasmābhistu marudgaṇaiḥ

"—for that reason, O lord of men, you were led onto the path toward the abode of hell. But now, O lord of the earth, swiftly, by us, the hosts of Maruts—"

Verse 57 (padma.5.101.57)

stūyamāno vimānena gaccha goviṁdamaṁdiram

"—praised, borne upon a celestial car, go to the temple of Govinda."
