Patala Khanda · Chapter 103

The Brahmin's Return to Life, and the Meditation on Krishna in Vrindavana

Chapter 102All chaptersChapter 104

Verse 1 (padma.5.103.1)

yama uvāca- etanmādhavamāsasya samāsātkiṁcidīritam māhātmyaṁ pūrṇimāyāśca viśeṣāddvijasattama

Yama said: This much has been told in brief concerning the greatness of the month of Madhava, and especially, O best of Brahmins, of its full-moon day.

Verse 2 (padma.5.103.2)

vaiśākhamāse madhusūdanasya priyaṁ ya enaṁ paṭhatītihāsam sa yāti kṛṣṇālayamāśupūtaḥ kalpānanekāniha modate ca

Whoever, in the month of Vaishakha, recites this history dear to Madhusudana, goes swiftly, purified, to the abode of Krishna, and rejoices there for many kalpas.

Verse 3 (padma.5.103.3)

dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyamidaṁ svastyayanaṁ mahat svargyaṁ śrīdaṁ saumanasyaṁ praśasyamaghamarṣaṇam

This is blessed, glorious, life-giving, a great bringer of well-being, conducive to heaven, bestower of fortune, of good cheer, praiseworthy, and a destroyer of sin.

Verse 4 (padma.5.103.4)

idaṁ mādhavamāsasya māhātmyaṁ mādhavapriyam caritraṁ bhūpatestasya saṁvādaṁ cāvayorapi

This is the greatness of the month of Madhava, dear to Madhava — the deeds of that king, and likewise the dialogue between the two of us.

Verse 5 (padma.5.103.5)

śrutvā paṭhitvā vidhivadanumodya manaḥpriyam bhavedbhaktirbhagavati yayā syātpāpasaṁkṣayaḥ

Having heard it, recited it duly, and rejoiced in it as dear to the mind, devotion to the Lord arises, by which the destruction of sin comes about.

Verse 6 (padma.5.103.6)

atha gaccha mahīdeva devalokādyathecchayā nipātya bhuvi vaidehaṁ rudaṁtyadyāpi bāṁdhavāḥ

Now go, O lord of the earth, from the world of the gods, as you wish; your kinsmen, having laid your body upon the ground, are still weeping even now.

Verse 7 (padma.5.103.7)

vilapyamānairapi baṁdhubhistairna yāvadagnau tava taccharīram prakṣipyate haṁta javairna tāvadyāhi svayaṁ supta iva prabuddhaḥ

While your kinsmen still lament, and your body has not yet been cast into the fire — go there yourself, before that happens, as one awakened from sleep.

Verse 8 (padma.5.103.8)

mamaprasādādiha puṇyayogaḥ śruto yathāvattamimaṁ vidhehi vidhānato vai samaye samaṁte samāgamoṁ'te bhavitā suraiśca

By my favor, having duly heard this union with merit, perform it accordingly; and, when your time comes, according to due order, at the end you will attain reunion with the gods.

Verse 9 (padma.5.103.9)

sūta uvāca- iti devavacaḥ śrutvā natvā dharmādhipaṁ tataḥ punaḥ papāta sa iha parituṣṭamanā dvijaḥ

Suta said: Having heard this word of the god, and having bowed to the Lord of Dharma, that Brahmin, his mind well satisfied, fell again here into his own body.

Verse 10 (padma.5.103.10)

dharmarājaprasādena tatastatra mahītale saṁsuptaiva cottasthau baṁdhuvargasamanvitaḥ

Then, by the grace of Dharmaraja, there on the earth, he rose up as though from sleep, surrounded by his host of kinsmen.

Verse 11 (padma.5.103.11)

vidhimenaṁ dvijo bhūmau varṣevarṣe ca sa svayam svayaṁ ca kārayāmāsa mādhavasnāpanaṁ janam

That Brahmin himself performed this rite upon the earth year after year, and he himself also had other people undertake the bathing of Madhava.

Verse 12 (padma.5.103.12)

yamabrāhmaṇasaṁvādo mayāyaṁ parikīrtitaḥ tasya mādhavamāsasya puṇyasnānaprasaṅgataḥ

This dialogue of Yama and the Brahmin has been declared by me, arising from the occasion of the meritorious bathing of that month of Madhava.

Verse 13 (padma.5.103.13)

vaiśākhamāse satataṁ haripriye snānaṁ vidadhyācca dadāti bhaktyā dānaṁ ca homaṁ sukṛtaṁ tathā budho hareḥpadaṁ tasya nadurllabhaṁ kadā

He who constantly, in the month of Vaishakha dear to Hari, performs the bathing, and gives with devotion, and gift and fire-offering and good deeds — for that wise man, the abode of Hari is never at all difficult to attain.

Verse 14 (padma.5.103.14)

yaḥśṛṇotyekacittenamāhātmyaṁmeṣasūryajam sarvapāpavinirmukto yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam

Whoever hears, with a single-pointed mind, this greatness born of the sun's entry into Aries, freed from all sin, goes to the supreme abode of Vishnu.

Verse 15 (padma.5.103.15)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ - sūtasūta mahāprājña tvayā'tikaruṇātmanā vaiśākhamāsamāhātmyaṁ kīrtitaṁ pāpanāśanam

The sages said: O Suta, son of Suta, greatly wise, of a most compassionate nature, you have declared the greatness of the month of Vaishakha, destroyer of sin.

Verse 16 (padma.5.103.16)

niyamā madhuhanturye mādhave kathitāstvayā pūjanaṁ snānadānādyaṁ śrautasmārtavidhānataḥ

The observances of the slayer of Madhu in the month of Madhava have been told by you — worship, bathing, giving, and the rest, according to the procedures of both Shruti and Smriti.

Verse 17 (padma.5.103.17)

yathā ca mādhavo devaḥ prīyate pāpanāśanaḥ adhunā śrotumicchāmo dhyānaṁ tasya mahātmanaḥ

And how the god Madhava, destroyer of sin, becomes pleased — that too has been told. Now we wish to hear the meditation upon that great Soul—

Verse 18 (padma.5.103.18)

kṛṣṇasya bhaktavṛndānāṁ priyasya bhavatāraṇam

—upon Krishna, dear to the multitudes of his devotees, the deliverer from worldly existence.

Verse 19 (padma.5.103.19)

sūta uvāca- śṛṇudhvaṁ munayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇasya jagadātmanaḥ gogopagopīprāṇasya vṛndāvanacarasya ca

Suta said: Hear, all you sages, of Krishna, the very Self of the universe, the life-breath of the cows, cowherds, and gopis, who roams in Vrindavana.

Verse 20 (padma.5.103.20)

ekadā nāradaḥ pṛṣṭo gautamena dvijottamāḥ sa tasmai prāha yaddhyānaṁ tadvakṣye pāpanāśanam

O best of Brahmins, once Narada was asked by Gautama; that meditation which he then declared to him, sin-destroying, I shall now tell.

Verse 21 (padma.5.103.21)

nārada uvāca- sumaprakarasaurabhodgalitamādhvikādyullasatsuśākhinavapallavaprakaranamra śobhāyutam praphullanavamañjarīlalitavallarīveṣṭitaṁ smareta satataṁ śivaṁ śitamatiḥ suvṛndāvanam

Narada said: Let one of purified intellect constantly meditate upon auspicious, beautiful Vrindavana — its branches bent low with the beauty of fresh new sprouts, honeyed fragrance spilling from clusters of blossoms, encircled by lovely creepers bright with freshly opened new buds.

Verse 22 (padma.5.103.22)

vikāśi sumanorasāsvadanamaṁjulaiḥ saṁcaracchilīmukhamukhodgatairmukharitāntaraṁ jhaṁkṛtaiḥ kapotaśukasārikāparabhṛtādibhiḥ patribhirvirāṇitamitastato bhujagaśatrunṛtyākulam

Meditate upon that grove, echoing within with the charming humming of bees roaming and tasting the nectar of flowers; resounding with the cries of doves, parrots, mynas, cuckoos, and the like; and thronged here and there with the dancing of the peacock, the serpent's foe.

Verse 23 (padma.5.103.23)

kalindaduhituśca lallaharivipluṣāṁ vāhibhirvinidra sarasīruhodararajaśca yoddhūsaraiḥ pradīpita manobhavavrajavilāsinī vāsasāṁ vilolanaparairniṣevitamanārataṁ mārutaiḥ

Meditate upon that grove, ceaselessly caressed by breezes that carry the fine spray of the Yamuna's playful waves, grey with the pollen of freshly-opened lotuses, and ever gently stirring the garments of the playful women of Vraja, thereby kindling desire.

Verse 24 (padma.5.103.24)

pravālanavapallavaṁ marakatacchadaṁ mauktikaprabhāprakarakorakaṁ kamalarāganānāphalam sthaviṣṭhamakhilartubhiḥ satatasevitaṁ kāmadaṁ tadantarapikalpakāṅghripamudañcitaṁ cintayet

One should contemplate that place, in whose midst the wish-fulfilling tree stands exalted — that grove which has coral-red sprouts, emerald-green leaves, buds bright as clusters of pearls, and manifold fruits of the hue of the red lotus; ever visited by all the seasons at once, and the granter of every desire.

Verse 25 (padma.5.103.25)

Let one free of indolence, untouched by the six waves of worldly affliction, again remember, beneath that wish-tree, the golden ground — radiant as the sun risen over a mountain of gold, showering forth sprays of nectar, ablaze with gems, and gleaming with heaps of flower-pollen.

Verse 26 (padma.5.103.26)

Having contemplated, set upon that jeweled pavement, the great yoga-seat, an eight-petaled red lotus, one should then meditate, in the midst of its rising, sun-like radiance, upon Mukunda seated there in comfort.

Verse 27 (padma.5.103.27)

Meditate upon him — "Surely this is Sutrama (Indra)!" — no, of a hue equal to a freshly-blossomed blue lotus, or a mass of pounded collyrium-clouds; his mass of curling hair glossy, dense, and dark-blue; his crest adorned, resplendently, with a peacock-plume.

Meditate upon him, encircled by young cowherd-boys, wandering about, tinkling with small bells tied at their waists, charming, adorned with tiger-claw ornaments, and lisping sweet, indistinct words.

Verse 43 (padma.5.103.43)

Meditate too on the graceful gopi-beauties — their hips made slow and swaying, their triple waist-fold bent under the weight of their full breasts, their fine line of belly-hair rising visibly—

Verse 44 (padma.5.103.44)

—those women on whom, from the moonlight of his most lovely, gentle smile, the very ocean of passion swells and overflows; their bodies covered with dense beads of sweat like the flying spray of its tremulous waves—

Verse 46 (padma.5.103.46)

tadatilalitamandacillicāpacyutaniśitekṣaṇamārabāṇavṛṣṭyā dalitasakalamarmavihvalāṅgapravisṛtaduḥsahavepathuvyathānām

—those women whose every vital point is shattered, whose limbs are overcome, by the shower of Kama's sharp arrows loosed from the graceful bows of his eyebrows; their bodies spreading in unbearable, trembling anguish—

Verse 47 (padma.5.103.47)

tadatiruciraveṣarūpaśobhāmṛtarasapānavidhānalālasānām praṇayasalilapūravāhinīnāmalasavilolavilocanāmbujānām

—those women longing to drink the nectar-flavor of the beauty of his form and attire; rivers ever flowing with the flood-water of love, their lotus-eyes languid and darting—

Verse 48 (padma.5.103.48)

visraṁsatkabarīkalāpavigalatphullatprasūnāsravan mādhvīlampaṭacañcarīkaghaṭayāsaṁsevitānāṁ muhuḥ māronmādamadaskhalanmṛdugirāmālolakāñcyullasa- nnīvīviślathamānacīnasicayāntārcirnitambatviṣām

—those women whose loosened braids let fall the fully-blossomed flowers, oozing nectar, ever visited by bees greedy for that honey; whose soft speech falters in the intoxication of Kama's madness; the radiant beauty of whose hips shows through their loosening silken garments—

Verse 49 (padma.5.103.49)

skhalitalasitapādāmbhojamandābhighātacchuritamaṇitulākoṭyākulāśāmukhānām caladadharadalānāṁkuḍmalāpakṣmalākṣi- dvayasarasiruhāṇāmullasatkuṇḍalānām

—those women whose stumbling, graceful lotus-feet set the jeweled anklet-bells ringing, filling every direction; their lower lips trembling like petals; their thick-lashed eyes like lotus-buds; their earrings gleaming—

Verse 50 (padma.5.103.50)

drāghiṣṭhaśvasanasamīraṇābhitāpapramlānībhavadaruṇauṣṭhapallavānām nānopāyanavilasatkarāmbujānāmālībhiḥ satataniṣevitaṁ samantāt

—those women whose red, tender lower lips wilt under the heat of their long, sighing breath; their lotus-hands resplendent, bearing manifold offerings — meditate on him, constantly attended by their companions.

Verse 51 (padma.5.103.51)

tāsāmāyatalolanīlanayanavyākośalīnāmbuja- sragbhiḥ saṁparipūjitākhilatanuṁ nānāvilāsāspadam tanmugdhānanapaṅkajapravigalanmādhvīrasāsvādinīṁ- bibhrāṇaṁ praṇayānmadākṣimadhuhṛnmālāṁ manohāriṇīm

Meditate upon him, his entire form honored with garlands of blossoming lotuses that mirror the long, restless, dark-blue eyes of those women — a treasury of every manner of graceful sport; wearing, out of love, the enchanting garland that seems itself to taste the honeyed nectar of their charming faces.

Verse 52 (padma.5.103.52)

gopīgopapaśūnāṁ bahiḥ smaredagrato'sya gīrvāṇaghaṭāṁvittārthinīṁ viriñcitrinayanaśatamanyupūrvikāṁ stotraparām

Beyond the circle of gopis, cowherds, and cattle, meditate upon the throng of the gods standing before him, seeking his favor, led by Brahma, three-eyed Shiva, and Indra, absorbed in his praise.

Verse 53 (padma.5.103.53)

tadvaddakṣiṇato muninikaraṁ dṛḍhadharmavāñchayā samāmnāyaparam yogīndrānatha pṛṣṭhe mumukṣamāṇānsamādhinā tu sanakādyān

Likewise, on his right, meditate upon the multitude of sages, devoted to the sacred tradition through firm longing for dharma; and behind him, the lords of yoga — Sanaka and the rest — striving for liberation through deep meditation.

Verse 54 (padma.5.103.54)

savye sakāntānatha yakṣasiddhagandharvavidyādharacāraṇāṁśca sakinnarānapsarasaśca mukhyāḥ kāmārthinīrnartanagītavādyaiḥ

On his left, meditate upon the yakshas together with their beloveds, the siddhas, gandharvas, vidyadharas, and charanas, together with the kinnaras; and the foremost apsarases, seeking his favor with dance, song, and music.

Verse 55 (padma.5.103.55)

śaṅkhendukundadhavalaṁ sakalāgamajñaṁ saudāminītatipiśaṅgajaṭākalāpam tatpādapaṅkajagatāmamalāṁ ca bhaktiṁ vāñchantamujjhitatarānyasamastasaṅgam

Meditate too upon Shiva, present there — white as the conch, the moon, and jasmine, knower of the entire scriptural tradition, his matted locks tawny as lightning, longing for spotless devotion at those lotus feet, having cast off every other attachment.

Verse 56 (padma.5.103.56)

nānāvidha śrutiguṇānvitasaptarāgagrāmatrayīgatamanoharamūrchanābhiḥ saṁprīṇayantamuditābhirapi prabhaktyā saṁcintayannabhasi māṁ druhiṇaprasūtam

Meditate upon him as gladdening all with enchanting melodic modulations, arising from the three scale-groupings of the seven notes, offered with joyous devotion — while I, born from the Creator, contemplate him in the sky above.

Verse 57 (padma.5.103.57)

iti dhyātvā'tmānaṁ paṭuviśadadhīrnandatanayaṁ naro buddhyaivā'rghaprabhṛtibhiranindyopahṛtibhiḥ yajedbhūyo bhaktyā svavapuṣi bahiṣṭhaiśca vibhavairiti proktaṁ sarvaṁ yadabhilaṣitaṁ bhūsuravarāḥ

O foremost of Brahmins, having thus meditated, a man of clear and sharp intellect should then, with devotion, worship the son of Nanda — identifying his own self with him — with unblemished offerings beginning with arghya, both within his own body and with external riches. Thus all that was desired has been declared.
