Chapter 60All chaptersChapter 62

Verse 1 (padma.5.61.1)

śatrughna uvāca jānāsi kiṁ mahāmaṁtrinko bālo hayamāharat yena me kṣapitaṁ sarvaṁ balaṁ vāridhisannibham

Shatrughna said: "Do you know, great minister, what boy it is who has carried off the horse, by whom my entire army, vast as the ocean, has been destroyed?"

Verse 2 (padma.5.61.2)

sumatiruvāca svāminnayaṁ muniśreṣṭha vālmīkerāśramo mahān kṣattriyāṇāmatra vāso nāstyeva paratāpana

Sumati said: "My lord, this is the great hermitage of Valmiki, foremost of sages; here, O scorcher of foes, no kshatriya could ever come to dwell."

Verse 3 (padma.5.61.3)

iṁdro bhaviṣyati paramamarṣī hayamāharat purārirvānyathā vāhaṁ tava kaḥ samupāharet

"It must surely be Indra, in the greatest fury, who has carried off the horse — or else Purari; otherwise who could seize your horse in this way?"

Verse 4 (padma.5.61.4)

kālajidyena nāśaṁ vai prāptaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ taṁ prati śrīmahārāja gaṁtā kaḥ puṣkalānyataḥ

"He by whom that most terrible Kalajit met his death — great king, which of your finest would go against him and not turn aside?"

Verse 5 (padma.5.61.5)

tvaṁ ca vīrairbhaṭaiḥ sarvairājabhiḥ parivāritaḥ tatra gacchasva sainyena mahatā śatrukṛṁtana

"Go yourself, then, O destroyer of foes, surrounded by all your heroes, warriors, and kings, with a great army."

Verse 6 (padma.5.61.6)

gatvā sa jīvitaṁ vīraṁ baddhvā tu kutukārthine darśayiṣyāmi rāmāya mataṁ me tvidamādṛtam

"Going there, bind that hero alive, out of sheer wonder, and show him to Rama — this is my own considered advice."

Verse 7 (padma.5.61.7)

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya vīrānsarvānsamādiśat sainyena mahatā yāta yūyamāyāmi pṛṣṭhataḥ

Hearing this word, he commanded all his heroes: "Go with the great army; I shall follow behind you."

Verse 8 (padma.5.61.8)

nirdiṣṭāste kṣaṇādvīrā jagmuryatra lavo balī dhanurvisphārayaṁstatra sudṛḍhaṁ guṇapūritam

Directed thus, those heroes went at once to where mighty Lava stood, drawing his own sturdy, well-strung bow.

Verse 9 (padma.5.61.9)

āyātaṁ tanmahaddṛṣṭvā balaṁ vīraprapūritam na kiṁcinmanasā bibhyelavena balaśālinā

Seeing that great army arrive, thronged with heroes, mighty Lava was not in the least afraid at heart.

Verse 10 (padma.5.61.10)

lavaḥ siṁha ivottasthau mṛgānmatvā'khilānbhaṭān dhanurvisphārayanroṣāccharānmuṁcansahasraśaḥ

Lava rose up like a lion, reckoning every warrior a mere deer, and, drawing his bow in fury, began loosing arrows by the thousand.

Verse 11 (padma.5.61.11)

te śaraiḥ pīḍyamānāstu mahāroṣeṇa pūritāḥ vīraṁ bālaṁ manyamānāḥ saṁmukhaṁ prādravaṁstadā

Afflicted by those arrows, filled with the greatest fury, taking him for a mere boy-warrior, they then rushed straight at him.

Verse 12 (padma.5.61.12)

vīrānsahasraśo dṛṣṭvā bhramibhiḥ paryavasthitān lavo javena saṁdhāya śarānroṣaprapūritaḥ

Seeing thousands of heroes arrayed in whirling battle formations, Lava, filled with fury, swiftly fitted his arrows —

Verse 13 (padma.5.61.13)

bhramirādyā sahasreṇa dvitīyāyutasaṁkhyayā tṛtīyāyutayugmena turīyāyutapaṁcabhiḥ

— the first circle numbering a thousand, the second ten thousand, the third twice ten thousand, the fourth five times ten thousand —

Verse 14 (padma.5.61.14)

paṁcamī lakṣayodhānāṁ ṣaṣṭhī yodhāyutādhikaiḥ saptamī lakṣayugmena saptabhirbhramibhirvṛtaḥ

— the fifth a hundred thousand warriors, the sixth more than a million, the seventh two hundred thousand — surrounded by these seven circles —

Verse 15 (padma.5.61.15)

madhye lavo bhramivyāptaḥ sa caranvahnivattadā dāhayāmāsa sarvānvai sainikānbhramikārakān

— Lava, in their very midst, encircled by those formations, moved then like fire itself, and burned away every soldier who had raised those circles against him.

Verse 16 (padma.5.61.16)

kācitkhaṅgaiḥ śaraiḥ kācitkācitprāsaiśca kuṁtalaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ parighaiḥ sarvā bhramirbhagnā mahātmanā

Some circle he shattered with swords, some with arrows, some with spears and lances, and every one with maces and iron bars — that great-souled one broke every formation.

Verse 17 (padma.5.61.17)

saptabhirbhramibhirmukto rarāja sa kuśānujaḥ meghavṛṁdavinirmuktaḥ śaśīva śaradāgame

Freed from all seven formations, Kusha's younger brother shone forth just as the moon shines, freed from a mass of clouds, when autumn arrives.

Verse 18 (padma.5.61.18)

prāharatsarvathā yodhānbhiṁdangajakarānbahūn chiṁdañchirāṁsi vīrāṇāṁ cakrabhrūṇi mahāṁti ca

Striking warriors on every side, piercing the trunks of many elephants, cutting off the very heads of heroes and the great hubs of their chariot-wheels —

Verse 19 (padma.5.61.19)

aneke patitā vīrā lavabāṇaprapīḍitāḥ mumuhuḥ samare'thānye naṣṭā anye sukātarāḥ

— many heroes fell, afflicted by Lava's arrows; some fainted in that battle, some fled outright, some grew utterly timid.

Verse 20 (padma.5.61.20)

palāyanaparaṁ sainyaṁ lavabāṇaprapīḍitam vīkṣya vīro raṇe yoddhuṁ prāyātpuṣkalasaṁjñakaḥ

Seeing his army fleeing, afflicted by Lava's arrows, the hero named Pushkala advanced to give battle himself.

Verse 21 (padma.5.61.21)

tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti ca vadanroṣapūritalocanaḥ rathe suhayaśobhāḍhye tiṣṭhanprāyāllavaṁ balī

Crying "Stand, stand!", his eyes filled with fury, standing upon a chariot resplendent with fine horses, that mighty one advanced against Lava.

Verse 22 (padma.5.61.22)

sa lavaṁ pratyuvācātha puṣkalaḥ paramāstravit tiṣṭha datte mayā saṁkhye rathe suhayaśobhite

Then Pushkala, master of the supreme weapons, said to Lava: "Stand — I offer you a place for single combat upon this chariot of fine horses."

Verse 23 (padma.5.61.23)

padātinā tvayā yuddhaṁ karomi kimathāhave tasmāttiṣṭha rathe paścādyuddhye'haṁ bhavatā saha etadvākyaṁ niśamyāsau lavaḥ puṣkalamabravīt

"What glory is there in fighting a foot-soldier such as you? Mount this chariot, then, and afterward I shall fight you." Hearing this word, Lava said to Pushkala —

Verse 24 (padma.5.61.24)

tvayā datte rathe sthitvā yuddhaṁ kuryāmahaṁ raṇe tadā me pāpameva syājjayaḥ saṁdigdha eva hi

"If I fought this battle standing upon a chariot given by you, that would itself be a sin for me — my very victory would remain in doubt."

Verse 25 (padma.5.61.25)

na vayaṁ brāhmaṇā vīra pratigrahaparāyaṇāḥ vayaṁ tu kṣatriyā nityaṁ dānakarmakriyāratāḥ

"We are no brahmins, O hero, given to accepting gifts; we are kshatriyas, ever devoted instead to the very act of giving."

Verse 26 (padma.5.61.26)

idānīṁ tvadrathaṁ kopādbhanajmi pratyahaṁ bhavān pādacārī bhavatyeva paścādyuddhaṁ kariṣyati

"Now, in anger, I shall break your chariot this very day; you will become a foot-soldier yourself, and then we shall fight."

Verse 27 (padma.5.61.27)

puṣkalo vākyamākarṇya dharmadhairyasamanvitam visismāya ciraṁ citte dhanuḥ sajyamathākarot

Hearing this word, so full of righteous resolve, Pushkala remained astonished at heart for a long while; he then strung his own bow.

Verse 28 (padma.5.61.28)

tamāttadhanuṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā lavaḥ kopasamanvitaḥ cāpaṁ ciccheda pāṇisthaṁ śarasaṁdhānamācaran

Seeing him with bow in hand, Lava, filled with fury, cut the bow in his very grasp before he could even fit an arrow.

Verse 29 (padma.5.61.29)

sa yāvatsa guṇaṁ cāpaṁ kurute tāvaduddhataḥ rathabhaṁgaṁ cakārāsya samare prahasanbalī

Even while he was stringing his bow, defiant, mighty Lava, laughing in that battle, shattered his very chariot.

Verse 30 (padma.5.61.30)

bhagnaṁ rathaṁ svakaṁ vīkṣya dhanuśchinnaṁ mahātmanā mahāvīraṁ manyamānaḥ padātiḥ prādravadraṇe

Seeing his own chariot broken and his bow cut down by that great-souled one, and deeming him a great hero, he rushed into battle on foot.

Verse 31 (padma.5.61.31)

ubhau dhanurdharau vīrāvubhāvapi śaroddhatau ubhau kṣatajavipluṣṭau chinnasannāhitāvubhau

Both were bow-bearing heroes, both fierce with arrows, both drenched in blood, both their armor cut away —

Verse 32 (padma.5.61.32)

parasparaṁ bāṇaghātaviśīrṇāvapulakṣitau jayākāṁkṣāṁ prakurvaṁtau parasparavadhaiṣiṇau

— both their bodies marked by the arrow-blows exchanged between them, both desiring victory, both wishing the other's death —

Verse 33 (padma.5.61.33)

jayaṁtakārtikeyau vā purāriḥ purabhidyathā evaṁ parasparaṁ yuddhaṁ prakurvāṇau raṇāṁgaṇe

— as though Jayanta and Kartikeya, or Purari and the destroyer of Tripura. Thus fighting one another upon that battlefield —

Verse 34 (padma.5.61.34)

puṣkalaḥ pratyuvācātha bālaṁ śūraśiromaṇe tvādṛśo na mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kaścidvīraśiromaṇiḥ

Pushkala then said to that boy: "O crest-jewel of heroes, I have never before seen a crest-jewel of heroes such as you."

Verse 35 (padma.5.61.35)

śiraste pātayāmyadya bāṇaiḥ śitasuparvabhiḥ mā palāyasva samare prāṇānrakṣasva saṁyataḥ

"Now I shall fell your head with sharp, well-jointed arrows; do not flee this battle — be watchful, and guard your own life."

Verse 36 (padma.5.61.36)

evamuktvā lavaṁ vīraṁ cakāra śarapaṁjare puṣkalasya śarā bhūmau nabhasi vyāpya saṁsthitāḥ

Having spoken thus, he bound the hero Lava within a very cage of arrows; Pushkala's shafts spread out, filling the sky and covering the earth.

Verse 37 (padma.5.61.37)

śarapaṁjaramadhyastho lavaḥ puṣkalamabravīt mahatkarma kṛtaṁ vīra yanmāṁ bāṇairapīḍayat

Standing amid that cage of arrows, Lava said to Pushkala: "A great deed indeed have you wrought, O hero, in afflicting me with your arrows."

Verse 38 (padma.5.61.38)

ityuktvā bāṇasaṁghātaṁ pracchidya vacanaṁ punaḥ jagāda puṣkalaṁ vīraḥ śarasaṁdhānakovidaḥ

Having spoken thus, scattering that whole mass of arrows, that hero, skilled in the fitting of shafts, said once more to Pushkala —

Verse 39 (padma.5.61.39)

pālayātmānamājisthaṁ maccharāghātapīḍitaḥ patiṣyasi mahīpṛṣṭhe rudhireṇa pariplutaḥ

"Standing here in battle, afflicted by the blows of my own arrows, guard yourself well — you shall fall to the earth, drenched in blood."

Verse 40 (padma.5.61.40)

evamuktaṁ samākarṇya puṣkalaḥ kopasaṁyutaḥ raṇe saṁyodhayāmāsa lavaṁ vīraṁ mahābalam

Hearing this said, Pushkala, filled with fury, joined battle with that mighty hero Lava.

Verse 41 (padma.5.61.41)

lavaḥ prakupito bāṇaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ vairividāraṇam jagrāha lavataḥ kośādāśīviṣamiva krudhā

Enraged, Lava drew from his own quiver a sharp, foe-rending arrow, taking it up in fury like a very venomous serpent.

Verse 42 (padma.5.61.42)

jājvalyamānaḥ saśaraścāpamukto lavasya ca hṛdayaṁ bhettumudyuktaśchinno bhāratināśu saḥ

Blazing, loosed from Lava's own bow, eager to pierce his very heart, that arrow was swiftly cut down by Bharati.

Verse 43 (padma.5.61.43)

chinne bhāratinā saṁkhye śareṇa prāṇahāriṇā atyaṁtaṁ kupito ghoraṁ śaramanyaṁ samādade

That life-taking arrow cut down by Bharati in that battle, he, in the greatest fury, took up yet another terrible shaft.

Verse 44 (padma.5.61.44)

ākarṇākṛṣṭacāpena sa mukto niśitaḥ śaraḥ bibheda hṛdayaṁ tasya puṣkalasya mahāraṇe

Loosed from a bow drawn back to his very ear, that sharp arrow pierced Pushkala's own heart in that great battle.

Verse 45 (padma.5.61.45)

bhinno vakṣasi vīreṇa sāyakenāśugāminā papāta dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe mahāśūraśiromaṇiḥ

Pierced in the chest by that hero's swift-flying arrow, that crest-jewel of the greatest warriors fell to the surface of the earth.

Verse 46 (padma.5.61.46)

patitaṁ taṁ samālokya puṣkalaṁ pavanātmajaḥ gṛhītvā rāghavabhrātre dadau mūrcchāsamanvitam

Seeing him fallen, the son of the wind lifted Pushkala up and gave him over, still in his swoon, to Raghava's own brother.

Verse 47 (padma.5.61.47)

mūrcchitaṁ taṁ samālokya śokavihvalamānasaḥ hanūmaṁtaṁ lavaṁ haṁtuṁ nidideśa krudhānvitaḥ

Seeing him thus in a swoon, his mind overwhelmed with sorrow, he, filled with fury, commanded Hanuman to slay Lava.

Verse 48 (padma.5.61.48)

hanūmānkrodhasaṁpluṣṭo lavaṁ saṁkhye mahābalam vijetuṁ tarasā prāgādvṛkṣamudyamya śālmalim

Hanuman, blazing with fury, swiftly advanced to conquer great hero Lava in that battle, uprooting a silk-cotton tree as he went.

Verse 49 (padma.5.61.49)

vṛkṣeṇa hatavānmūrdhni lavasya hanumānbalī tamāpataṁtaṁ tarasā ciccheda śatadhā lavaḥ

Mighty Hanuman struck at Lava's head with that tree; and Lava, with speed, cut that hurtling tree into a hundred pieces.

Verse 50 (padma.5.61.50)

chinne nage punaḥ kopādvṛkṣānutpāṭya mūlataḥ tāḍayāmāsa hṛdaye mastake ca mahābalaḥ

That tree cut down, in fury once more he tore up trees by their very roots, and struck at that mighty one's chest and head.

Verse 51 (padma.5.61.51)

yānyānvṛkṣānsamāhṛtyātāḍayatpavanātmajaḥ tāṁstāṁściccheda tarasā balavānnataparvabhiḥ

Whatever trees the son of the wind brought to strike him with, that mighty one swiftly cut down every one, with his own well-jointed arrows.

Verse 52 (padma.5.61.52)

tadā śilāḥ samutpāṭya gaṁḍaśailopamāḥ kapiḥ pātayāmāsa śirasi kṣipravegena mārutiḥ

Then, tearing up great boulders like crags of rock, the monkey Maruti hurled them down upon his head with the swiftest force.

Verse 53 (padma.5.61.53)

sa āhataḥ śilāsaṁghaiḥ saṁkhye kodaṁḍamunnayan bāṇaistāścūrṇayāmāsa yaṁtrikābhiryathā kaṇāḥ

Struck by those masses of boulders, raising his bow in that battle, he pulverized them with his arrows as a mill grinds grain to powder.

Verse 54 (padma.5.61.54)

tadātyaṁtaṁ prakupito mārutiḥ pucchaveṣṭanam cakāra samaropāṁte lavasya balinaḥ kṛtī

Then, greatly enraged, clever Hanuman wound his own tail about mighty Lava at the very edge of that battle.

Verse 55 (padma.5.61.55)

svaṁ pucchena samāviddhaṁ vīkṣya svāṁbāṁ hṛdi smaran muṣṭinā tāḍayāmāsa lāṁgūlaṁ māruterbalī

Seeing himself thus bound fast by that tail, calling his own mother to mind in his heart, that mighty one struck Maruti's tail with his fist.

Verse 56 (padma.5.61.56)

tanmuṣṭighātavyathito mārutistamamūmucat sa muktaḥ pucchato yuddhe śarānmuṁcannabhūdbalī

Pained by that blow of the fist, Maruti released him; and freed from that tail, loosing arrows once more in battle, he grew mighty again.

Verse 57 (padma.5.61.57)

durvāraśaraghātena saṁpīḍitatanuḥ kapiḥ bāṇavarṣaṁ manyamāno duḥsahaṁ samare bahu

His body afflicted now by the blows of unceasing arrows, that monkey, finding this rain of arrows unbearable in that great battle —

Verse 58 (padma.5.61.58)

kiṁkartavyamito'smābhiḥ palāyya yadi gamyate tadā me svāmino lajjā tāḍayedbālako'tra mām

— thought to himself: "What is to be done now? If I flee, this boy here will bring dishonor upon my own lord."

Verse 59 (padma.5.61.59)

brahmadattavaratvāttu mūrcchā na maraṇaṁ nahi duḥsahā bāṇapīḍātra kiṁ kartavyaṁ mayādhunā

"Yet, by the boon Brahma once granted me, only a swoon can befall me, never death; still this pain of arrows is unbearable — what should I do now?"

Verse 60 (padma.5.61.60)
