The Sacred Fields of Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.1)
sūta uvāca śṛṇudhvamṛṣayaḥ prājñāḥ śivakṣetraṁ vimuktidam tadāgamāṁstato vakṣye lokarakṣārthameva hi
Suta said: Listen, O wise sages, to an account of the Shiva-kshetra that bestows liberation. I shall then relate its scriptural traditions, for the protection of the world.
Verse 2 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.2)

By Shiva's command, the earth — vast, spanning five hundred million yojanas, with its mountains, forests and woodlands — stands sustaining the world.
Verse 3 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.3)

Here and there upon it are Shiva-kshetras. Out of compassion, for the liberation of those who dwell there, Lord Shiva Himself has fashioned these sacred fields.

Some arose through the sages who took them up, some through the gods who did the same, and others are self-manifested — all this for the sake of the world's protection.

Bathing at each respective tirtha in its respective month bestows the state of Indra. The wise should take refuge in either the Ganga or the Sahya-born Kaveri and dwell there.
Verse 32 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.32)
tatkālakṛtapāpasya kṣayo bhavati niścitam rudralokapradānyeva santi kṣetrāṇyanekaśaḥ
Whatever sin was committed up to that time is certainly destroyed. There are, besides these, numerous other sacred fields that bestow the world of Rudra.
Verse 33 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.33)
tāmraparṇī vegavatī brahmalokaphalaprade tayostīre hi santyeva kṣetrāṇi svargadāni ca
The Tamraparni and the Vegavati grant, as their fruit, the world of Brahma; along their banks too lie sacred fields that bestow heaven.
Verse 34 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.34)
santi kṣetrāṇi tanmadhye puṇyadāni ca bhūriśaḥ tatra tatra vasanprājñastādṛśaṁ ca phalaṁ labhet
Among these lie very many other sacred fields that confer merit. The wise, dwelling here and there among them, obtain the fruit appropriate to each.
Verse 35 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.35)
sadācāreṇa sadvṛttyā sadā bhāvanayāpi ca vaseddayāluḥ prājño vai nānyathā tatphalaṁ labhet
One should dwell there with good conduct, right behavior, and constant good feeling, with a compassionate and wise heart; otherwise that fruit is not obtained.
Verse 36 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.36)
puṇyakṣetre kṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ bahudhā ṛddhimṛcchati puṇyakṣetre kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ mahadaṇvāpi jāyate
Merit performed in a sacred field grows manifold in its abundance. But sin committed in a sacred field, whether great or small, likewise becomes magnified.
Verse 37 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.37)
tatkālaṁ jīvanārthaścetpuṇyena kṣayameṣyati puṇyamaiśvaryadaṁ prāhuḥ kāyikaṁ vācikaṁ tathā
If it was committed there merely for the sake of livelihood at that time, it will be dissolved by later merit. Merit is said to bestow prosperity — that arising from body, from speech,
Verse 38 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.38)
mānasaṁ ca tathā pāpaṁ tādṛśaṁ nāśayed dvijāḥ mānasaṁ vajralepaṁ tu kalpakalpānugaṁ tathā
and from mind; and, O brahmanas, sin of these same three kinds may likewise be destroyed by the corresponding remedy. Mental sin, however, clings like a diamond-hard coating, persisting age after age;
Verse 39 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.39)
dhyānādeva hi tannaśyennānyathā nāśamṛcchati vācikaṁ japajālena kāyikaṁ kāyaśoṣaṇāt
it is destroyed only through meditation, by no other means. Verbal sin is destroyed through the practice of recitation, and bodily sin through austerities that discipline the body;
Verse 40 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.40)
dānāddhanakṛtaṁ naśyennānyathā kalpakoṭibhiḥ kvacitpāpena puṇyaṁ ca vṛddhipūrveṇa naśyati
sin arising from wealth is destroyed only through charity, and by no other means, not even over tens of millions of ages. Sometimes merit is destroyed by sin, and sometimes sin by prior accumulated sin.
Verse 41 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.41)
bījāṁśaścaiva vṛddhyaṁśo bhogāṁśaḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ jñānanāśyo hi bījāṁśo vṛddhiruktaprakārataḥ
Both merit and sin have three portions — a seed-portion, a growth-portion, and an experience-portion. The seed-portion is destroyed only by knowledge; the growth-portion by the means already described;
Verse 42 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.42)
bhogāṁśo bhoganāśyastu nānyathā puṇyakoṭibhiḥ bījaprarohe naṣṭe tu śeṣo bhogāya kalpate
and the experience-portion is destroyed only by being experienced, not even by tens of millions of merits otherwise. But once the sprouting of the seed is destroyed, what remains serves only to be experienced.
Verse 43 (shiva.vidyeshvara.12.43)
devānāṁ pūjayā caiva brahmaṇānāṁ ca dānataḥ tapodhikyācca kālena bhogaḥ sahyo bhavennṛṇām tasmātpāpamakṛtvaiva vastavyaṁ sukhamicchatā
Through worship of the gods, through charity to brahmanas, and through abundant austerity, that experience, in time, becomes bearable for men. Therefore, one who desires happiness should live without ever committing sin.
