Verse 1 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.1)

सूत उवाच - अथ वैदिकभक्तानां पार्थिवार्चा निगद्यते । वैदिकेनैव मार्गेण भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनी ॥ 20.1 ॥

sūta uvāca - atha vaidikabhaktānāṁ pārthivārcā nigadyate vaidikenaiva mārgeṇa bhuktimuktipradāyinī

Suta said: Now the Parthiva worship of Vedic devotees is described, which, by the Vedic path alone, bestows both worldly enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 2 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.2)

सूत्रोक्तविधिना स्नात्वा सन्ध्यां कृत्वा यथाविधि । ब्रह्मयज्ञं विधायादौ ततस्तर्पणमाचरेत् ॥ 20.2 ॥

sūtroktavidhinā snātvā sandhyāṁ kṛtvā yathāvidhi brahmayajñaṁ vidhāyādau tatastarpaṇamācaret

Having bathed according to the rule stated in the sutras, having duly performed the twilight rites, having first performed the brahma-yajna, one should then perform the water-offerings (tarpana).

Verse 3 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.3)

नैत्यिकं सकलं कामं विधायानन्तरं पुमान् । शिवस्मरणपूर्वं हि भस्मरुद्राक्षधारकः ॥ 20.3 ॥

naityikaṁ sakalaṁ kāmaṁ vidhāyānantaraṁ pumān śivasmaraṇapūrvaṁ hi bhasmarudrākṣadhārakaḥ

Having completed all daily obligatory rites, the man, first remembering Shiva, should then wear sacred ash and rudraksha.

Verse 4 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.4)

वेदोक्तविधिना सम्यक् सम्पूर्णफलसिद्धये । पूजयेत्परया भक्त्या पार्थिवं लिङ्गमुत्तमम् ॥ 20.4 ॥

vedoktavidhinā samyak sampūrṇaphalasiddhaye pūjayetparayā bhaktyā pārthivaṁ liṅgamuttamam

According to the rule declared in the Veda, for the attainment of complete fruit, one should worship the excellent Parthiva linga with the utmost devotion.

Verse 5 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.5)

नदीतीरे तडागे च पर्वते काननेऽपि च । शिवालये शुचौ देशे पार्थिवार्चा विधीयते ॥ 20.5 ॥

nadītīre taḍāge ca parvate kānane’pi ca śivālaye śucau deśe pārthivārcā vidhīyate

On a riverbank, at a pond, on a mountain, in a forest, or in a Shiva temple — in any pure place, the Parthiva worship is prescribed.

Verse 6 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.6)

शुद्धप्रदेशसम्भूतां मृदमाहृत्य यत्नतः । शिवलिङ्गं प्रकल्पेत सावधानतया द्विजाः ॥ 20.6 ॥

śuddhapradeśasambhūtāṁ mṛdamāhṛtya yatnataḥ śivaliṅgaṁ prakalpeta sāvadhānatayā dvijāḥ

Having carefully brought clay arisen from a pure place, O brahmins, one should fashion the Shiva-linga with great attentiveness.

Verse 7 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.7)

विप्रे गौरा स्मृता शोणा बाहुजे पीतवर्णका । वैश्ये कृष्णा पादजाते ह्यथवा यत्र या भवेत् ॥ 20.7 ॥

vipre gaurā smṛtā śoṇā bāhuje pītavarṇakā vaiśye kṛṣṇā pādajāte hyathavā yatra yā bhavet

White clay is prescribed for a brahmin, red for the arm-born (kshatriya), yellow for a vaishya, and black for the foot-born (shudra) — or else, whatever colour of clay is available in that place.

Verse 8 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.8)

सङ्गृह्य मृत्तिकां लिङ्गनिर्माणार्थं प्रयत्नतः । अतीव शुभदेशे च स्थापयेत्तां मृदं शुभाम् ॥ 20.8 ॥

saṅgṛhya mṛttikāṁ liṅganirmāṇārthaṁ prayatnataḥ atīva śubhadeśe ca sthāpayettāṁ mṛdaṁ śubhām

Having gathered clay with great effort for the purpose of fashioning the linga, one should place that auspicious clay in a most auspicious spot.

Verse 9 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.9)

संशोध्य च जलेनापि पिण्डीकृत्य शनैः शनैः । विधीयेत शुभं लिङ्गं पार्थिवं वेदमार्गतः ॥ 20.9 ॥

saṁśodhya ca jalenāpi piṇḍīkṛtya śanaiḥ śanaiḥ vidhīyeta śubhaṁ liṅgaṁ pārthivaṁ vedamārgataḥ

Having also purified it with water, gently kneading it into a lump, one should fashion the auspicious Parthiva linga according to the Vedic path.

Verse 10 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.10)

ततः सम्पूजयेद्भक्त्या भुक्तिमुक्तिफलाप्तये । तत्प्रकारमहं वच्मि शृणुध्वं सविधानतः ॥ 20.10 ॥

tataḥ sampūjayedbhaktyā bhuktimuktiphalāptaye tatprakāramahaṁ vacmi śaṛṇudhvaṁ savidhānataḥ

Then, for the attainment of the fruit of enjoyment and liberation, one should worship it with devotion; I now tell that procedure together with its rules — listen.

Verse 11 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.11)

नमः शिवाय मन्त्रेणार्चनद्रव्यं च प्रोक्षयेत् । भूरसीति च मन्त्रेण क्षेत्रसिद्धिं प्रकारयेत् ॥ 20.11 ॥

namaḥ śivāya mantreṇārcanadravyaṁ ca prokṣayet bhūrasīti ca mantreṇa kṣetrasiddhiṁ prakārayet

With the mantra 'Namaḥ Śivāya' one should sprinkle the worship-materials; with the mantra beginning 'Bhūrasi' one should effect the purification of the ground.

Verse 12 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.12)

आपोऽस्मानिति मन्त्रेण जलसंस्कारमाचरेत् । नमस्ते रुद्रमन्त्रेण स्फाटिकाबन्धमुच्यते ॥ 20.12 ॥

āpo’smāniti mantreṇa jalasaṁskāramācaret namaste rudramantreṇa sphāṭikābandhamucyate

With the mantra 'Āpo'smān' one should perform the consecration of water; with the mantra 'Namas te Rudra' the securing of the crystal (linga) is prescribed.

Verse 13 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.13)

शम्भवायेति मन्त्रेण क्षेत्रशुद्धिं प्रकारयेत् । कुर्यात्पञ्चामृतस्यापि नमःपूर्वेण प्रोक्षणम् ॥ 20.13 ॥

śambhavāyeti mantreṇa kṣetraśuddhiṁ prakārayet kuryātpañcāmṛtasyāpi namaḥpūrveṇa prokṣaṇam

With the mantra 'Śambhave' one should effect purification of the ground; with mantras beginning 'Namaḥ' one should also sprinkle the five nectars (panchāmrita).

Verse 14 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.14)

नीलग्रीवाय मन्त्रेण नमःपूर्वेण भक्तिमान् । चरेच्छङ्करलिङ्गस्य प्रतिष्ठापनमुत्तमम् ॥ 20.14 ॥

nīlagrīvāya mantreṇa namaḥpūrveṇa bhaktimān carecchaṅkaraliṅgasya pratiṣṭhāpanamuttamam

With the mantra 'Nīlagrīvāya', preceded by 'namaḥ', the devoted practitioner should perform the excellent installation of the Shankara-linga.

Verse 15 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.15)

भक्तितस्तत एतत्ते रुद्रावेति च मन्त्रतः । आसनं रमणीयं वै दद्याद्वैदिकमार्गकृत् ॥ 20.15 ॥

bhaktitastata etatte rudrāveti ca mantrataḥ āsanaṁ ramaṇīyaṁ vai dadyādvaidikamārgakṛt

With devotion, using the mantras beginning 'Etat te Rudra', the follower of the Vedic path should offer a delightful seat.

Verse 16 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.16)

मानो महान्तमिति च मन्त्रेणावाहनं चरेत् । या ते रुद्रेण मन्त्रेण सञ्चरेदुपवेशनम् ॥ 20.16 ॥

māno mahāntamiti ca mantreṇāvāhanaṁ caret yā te rudreṇa mantreṇa sañcaredupaveśanam

With the mantra 'Mano Mahāntam' one should perform the invocation; with the mantra 'Yā te Rudra' one should perform the seating of the deity.

Verse 17 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.17)

मन्त्रेण यामिषुमिति न्यासं कुर्याच्छिवस्य च । अध्यवोचदिति प्रेम्णाधिवासं मनुनाचरेत् ॥ 20.17 ॥

mantreṇa yāmiṣumiti nyāsaṁ kuryācchivasya ca adhyavocaditi premṇādhivāsaṁ manunācaret

With the mantra 'Yāmiṣum' one should perform the ritual placement (nyāsa) of Shiva; with the mantra 'Adhyavocat', with devotion, one should perform the ceremonial resting (adhivāsa).

Verse 18 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.18)

मनुनासौ जीव इति देवतान्यासमाचरेत् । असौ योऽवसर्पतीति चाचरेदुपसर्पणम् ॥ 20.18 ॥

manunāsau jīva iti devatānyāsamācaret asau yo’vasarpatīti cācaredupasarpaṇam

With the mantra 'Asau Jīva' one should perform the placement of the deity; with 'Asau yo'vasarpati' one should perform the approach (upasarpaṇa).

Verse 19 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.19)

नमोऽस्तु नीलग्रीवायेति पाद्यं मनुनाहरेत् । अर्घ्यं च रुद्रगायत्र्याचमनं त्र्यम्बकेण च ॥ 20.19 ॥

namo’stu nīlagrīvāyeti pādyaṁ manunāharet arghyaṁ ca rudragāyatryācamanaṁ tryambakeṇa ca

With the mantra 'Namo'stu Nīlagrīvāya' one should offer water for the feet; with the Rudra-gāyatrī one should offer arghya, and with the Tryambaka mantra, sipping-water (āchamana).

Verse 20 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.20)

पयः पृथिव्यां मन्त्रेण पयसा स्नानमाचरेत् । दधिक्राव्णेति मन्त्रेण दधिस्नानं च कारयेत् ॥ 20.20 ॥

payaḥ pṛthivyāṁ mantreṇa payasā snānamācaret dadhikrāvṇeti mantreṇa dadhisnānaṁ ca kārayet

With the mantra 'Payaḥ Pṛthivyām' one should perform the milk-bath; with the mantra 'Dadhikrāvṇaḥ' one should perform the curd-bath.

Verse 21 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.21)

घृतस्नानं खलु घृतं घृतयावेति मन्त्रतः । मधुव्वाता मधुनक्तं मधुमान्न इति त्र्यृचा ॥ 20.21 ॥

ghṛtasnānaṁ khalu ghṛtaṁ ghṛtayāveti mantrataḥ madhuvvātā madhunaktaṁ madhumānna iti tryṛcā

The ghee-bath should be performed with the mantra 'Ghṛtaṁ Ghṛtapāve'; the honey-bath with the three verses 'Madhu Vātā', 'Madhu Naktam', and 'Madhumān Naḥ'.

Verse 22 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.22)

मधुखण्डस्नपनं प्रोक्तमिति पञ्चामृतं स्मृतम् । अथवा पाद्यमन्त्रेण स्नानं पञ्चामृतेन च ॥ 20.22 ॥

madhukhaṇḍasnapanaṁ proktamiti pañcāmṛtaṁ smṛtam athavā pādyamantreṇa snānaṁ pañcāmṛtena ca

This is called the honey-portion bathing, and is thus reckoned as the panchamrita rite; or else the panchamrita bath may also be performed with the padya mantra.

Verse 23 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.23)

मानस्तोके इति प्रेम्णा मन्त्रेण कटिबन्धनम् । नमो धृष्णवे इति वा उत्तरीयं च धारयेत् ॥ 20.23 ॥

mānastoke iti premṇā mantreṇa kaṭibandhanam namo dhṛṣṇave iti vā uttarīyaṁ ca dhārayet

With devotion, with the mantra 'Mānastoke' one should perform the tying of the waist-cloth; or with 'Namo Dhṛṣṇave' one should have the upper garment worn.

Verse 24 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.24)

या ते हेतिरिति प्रेम्णा ऋक्चतुष्केण वैदिकः । शिवाय विधिना भक्तश्चरेद्वस्त्रसमर्पणम् ॥ 20.24 ॥

yā te hetiriti premṇā ṛkcatuṣkeṇa vaidikaḥ śivāya vidhinā bhaktaścaredvastrasamarpaṇam

With devotion, using the four verses beginning 'Yā te Hetiḥ', the Vedic devotee should offer cloth to Shiva according to rule.

Verse 25 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.25)

नमः श्वभ्य इति प्रेम्णा गन्धं दद्यादृचा सुधीः । नमस्तक्षभ्य इति चाक्षतान्मन्त्रेण चार्पयेत् ॥ 20.25 ॥

namaḥ śvabhya iti premṇā gandhaṁ dadyādṛcā sudhīḥ namastakṣabhya iti cākṣatānmantreṇa cārpayet

With devotion, with the verse 'Namaḥ Śvabhyaḥ', the wise practitioner should offer fragrant paste; with the mantra 'Namas Takṣabhyaḥ', one should offer unbroken rice.

Verse 26 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.26)

नमः पार्याय इति वा पुष्पं मन्त्रेण चार्पयेत् । नमः पर्ण्णाय इति वा बिल्वपत्रसमर्पणम् ॥ 20.26 ॥

namaḥ pāryāya iti vā puṣpaṁ mantreṇa cārpayet namaḥ parṇṇāya iti vā bilvapatrasamarpaṇam

With the mantra 'Namaḥ Pāryāya' one should offer flowers; with 'Namaḥ Parṇāya' one should offer the bilva leaf.

Verse 27 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.27)

नमः कपर्दिने चेति धूपं दद्याद्यथाविधि । दीपं दद्याद्यथोक्तं तु नम आशव इत्यृचा ॥ 20.27 ॥

namaḥ kapardine ceti dhūpaṁ dadyādyathāvidhi dīpaṁ dadyādyathoktaṁ tu nama āśava ityṛcā

With the mantra 'Namaḥ Kapardine' one should offer incense according to rule; with the verse 'Nama Āśave' one should offer the lamp as prescribed.

Verse 28 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.28)

नमो ज्येष्ठाय मन्त्रेण दद्यान्नैवेद्यमुत्तमम् । मनुना त्र्यम्बकमिति पुनराचमनं स्मृतम् ॥ 20.28 ॥

namo jyeṣṭhāya mantreṇa dadyānnaivedyamuttamam manunā tryambakamiti punarācamanaṁ smṛtam

With the mantra 'Namo Jyeṣṭhāya' one should offer excellent naivedya; with the 'Tryambakam' mantra, sipping-water is again performed.

Verse 29 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.29)

इमा रुद्रायेति ऋचा कुर्यात्फलसमर्पणम् । नमो व्रज्यायेति ऋचा सकलं शम्भवेऽर्पयेत् ॥ 20.29 ॥

imā rudrāyeti ṛcā kuryātphalasamarpaṇam namo vrajyāyeti ṛcā sakalaṁ śambhave’rpayet

With the verse 'Imā Rudrāya' one should offer fruit; with the verse 'Namo Vrajyāya' one should offer everything remaining to Shambhu.

Verse 30 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.30)

मानो महान्तमिति च मानस्तोके इति ततः । मन्त्रद्वयेनैकादशाक्षतै रुद्रान्प्रपूजयेत् ॥ 20.30 ॥

māno mahāntamiti ca mānastoke iti tataḥ mantradvayenaikādaśākṣatai rudrānprapūjayet

With 'Mano Mahāntam' and then 'Mānastoke' — with these two mantras, one should worship the Rudras with eleven offerings of unbroken rice.

Verse 31 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.31)

हिरण्यगर्भ इति त्र्यृचा दक्षिणां हि समर्पयेत् । देवस्यत्वेति मन्त्रेण ह्यभिषेकं चरेद्बुधः ॥ 20.31 ॥

hiraṇyagarbha iti tryṛcā dakṣiṇāṁ hi samarpayet devasyatveti mantreṇa hyabhiṣekaṁ caredbudhaḥ

With the three verses of 'Hiraṇyagarbha' one should offer the dakshina; with the mantra 'Devasya Tvā' the wise one should perform the ablution.

Verse 32 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.32)

दीपमन्त्रेण वा शम्भोर्नीराजनविधिं चरेत् । पुष्पाञ्जलिं चरेद्भक्त्या इमा रुद्राय च त्र्यृचा ॥ 20.32 ॥

dīpamantreṇa vā śambhornīrājanavidhiṁ caret puṣpāñjaliṁ caredbhaktyā imā rudrāya ca tryṛcā

Or with the lamp-mantra, one should perform the waving-of-lights rite for Shambhu; with devotion, one should offer a handful of flowers with the three verses of 'Imā Rudrāya'.

Verse 33 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.33)

मानो महान्तमिति च चरेत्प्राज्ञः प्रदक्षिणाम् । मानस्तोकेति मन्त्रेण साष्टाङ्गं प्रणमेत्सुधीः ॥ 20.33 ॥

māno mahāntamiti ca caretprājñaḥ pradakṣiṇām mānastoketi mantreṇa sāṣṭāṅgaṁ praṇametsudhīḥ

With the mantra 'Mano Mahāntam' the wise practitioner should perform circumambulation; with 'Mānastoke' one should offer full prostration with eight limbs.

Verse 34 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.34)

एष ते इति मन्त्रेण शिवमुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् । यतो यत इत्यभयां ज्ञानाख्यां त्र्यम्बकेण च ॥ 20.34 ॥

eṣa te iti mantreṇa śivamudrāṁ pradarśayet yato yata ityabhayāṁ jñānākhyāṁ tryambakeṇa ca

With the mantra 'Eṣa Te' one should display the Shiva-mudrā; with 'Yato Yataḥ' and the Tryambaka mantra, one should display the fear-dispelling gesture called Jñāna.

Verse 35 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.35)

नमः सेनेति मन्त्रेण महामुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् । दर्शयेद्धेनुमुद्रां च नमो गोभ्य ऋचानया ॥ 20.35 ॥

namaḥ seneti mantreṇa mahāmudrāṁ pradarśayet darśayeddhenumudrāṁ ca namo gobhya ṛcānayā

With the mantra 'Namaḥ Sene' one should display the great mudrā; with the verse 'Namo Gobhyaḥ' one should display the cow-gesture.

Verse 36 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.36)

पञ्च मुद्राः प्रदर्श्याथ शिवमन्त्रजपं चरेत् । शतरुद्रियमन्त्रेण जपेद् वेदविचक्षणः ॥ 20.36 ॥

pañca mudrāḥ pradarśyātha śivamantrajapaṁ caret śatarudriyamantreṇa japed vedavicakṣaṇaḥ

Having displayed the five mudras, one should then perform the japa of the Shiva-mantra; one skilled in the Veda should chant with the Shatarudriya mantra.

Verse 37 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.37)

ततः पञ्चाङ्गपाठं च कुयाद् वेदविचक्षणः । देवागात्विति मन्त्रेण कुर्याच्छम्भोर्विसर्जनम् ॥ 20.37 ॥

tataḥ pañcāṅgapāṭhaṁ ca kuyād vedavicakṣaṇaḥ devāgātviti mantreṇa kuryācchambhorvisarjanam

Then one skilled in the Veda should perform the five-limbed recitation; with the mantra 'Devo Agāt' one should perform the send-off of Shambhu.

Verse 38 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.38)

इत्युक्तः शिवपूजाया व्यासतो वैदिको विधिः । समासतश्च शृणुत वैदिकं विधिमुत्तमम् ॥ 20.38 ॥

ityuktaḥ śivapūjāyā vyāsato vaidiko vidhiḥ samāsataśca śaṛṇuta vaidikaṁ vidhimuttamam

Thus has the Vedic procedure of Shiva-worship been declared by Vyasa; now hear again, in brief, that most excellent Vedic procedure.

Verse 39 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.39)

ऋचा सद्योजातमिति मृदाहरणमाचरेत् । वामदेवाय इति च जलप्रक्षेपमाचरेत् ॥ 20.39 ॥

ṛcā sadyojātamiti mṛdāharaṇamācaret vāmadevāya iti ca jalaprakṣepamācaret

With the verse 'Sadyojātam' one should gather the clay; with the mantra 'Vāmadevāya' one should sprinkle water.

Verse 40 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.40)

अघोरेण च मन्त्रेण लिङ्गनिर्माणमाचरेत् । तत्पुरुषाय मन्त्रेणाह्वानं कुर्याद्यथाविधि ॥ 20.40 ॥

aghoreṇa ca mantreṇa liṅganirmāṇamācaret tatpuruṣāya mantreṇāhvānaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi

With the Aghora mantra one should fashion the linga; with the Tatpurusha mantra one should perform the invocation according to rule.

Verse 41 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.41)

संयोजयेद्वेदिकायामीशानमनुना हरम् । अन्यत्सर्वं विधानं च कुर्यात्सङ्क्षेपतः सुधीः ॥ 20.41 ॥

saṁyojayedvedikāyāmīśānamanunā haram anyatsarvaṁ vidhānaṁ ca kuryātsaṅkṣepataḥ sudhīḥ

With the Ishana mantra one should unite Shiva upon the pedestal; the wise should perform all the remaining procedure in brief.

Verse 42 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.42)

पञ्चाक्षरेण मन्त्रेण गुरुदत्तेन वा तथा । कुर्यात्पूजां षोडशोपचारेण विधिवत्सुधीः ॥ 20.42 ॥

pañcākṣareṇa mantreṇa gurudattena vā tathā kuryātpūjāṁ ṣoḍaśopacāreṇa vidhivatsudhīḥ

With the Panchakshara mantra, or with the mantra given by the guru, the wise should perform worship according to rule with the sixteen ritual offerings.

Verse 43 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.43)

भवाय भवनाशाय महादेवाय धीमहि । उग्राय उग्रनाशाय शर्वाय शशिमौलिने ॥ 20.43 ॥

bhavāya bhavanāśāya mahādevāya dhīmahi ugrāya ugranāśāya śarvāya śaśimauline

'We meditate upon Bhava, upon the great god who is the destroyer of worldly becoming; upon the fierce Ugra, the destroyer of fierceness, upon Sharva, who wears the crescent moon' —

Verse 44 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.44)

अनेन मनुना वापि पूजयेच्छङ्करं सुधीः । सुभक्त्या च भ्रमं त्यक्त्वा भक्त्यैव फलदः शिवः ॥ 20.44 ॥

anena manunā vāpi pūjayecchaṅkaraṁ sudhīḥ subhaktyā ca bhramaṁ tyaktvā bhaktyaiva phaladaḥ śivaḥ

with this very mantra too the wise may worship Shankara; with true devotion, having abandoned confusion, it is through devotion alone that Shiva grants fruit.

Verse 45 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.45)

इत्यपि प्रोक्तमादृत्य वैदिकं क्रमपूजनम् । प्रोच्यतेऽन्यविधिः सम्यक्साधारणतया द्विजाः ॥ 20.45 ॥

ityapi proktamādṛtya vaidikaṁ kramapūjanam procyate’nyavidhiḥ samyaksādhāraṇatayā dvijāḥ

Having thus respectfully described the sequential Vedic worship, another, more general method is now also told, O brahmins.

Verse 46 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.46)

पूजा पार्थिवलिङ्गस्य सम्प्रोक्ता शिवनामभिः । तां शृणुध्वं मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सर्वकामप्रदायिनीम् ॥ 20.46 ॥

pūjā pārthivaliṅgasya samproktā śivanāmabhiḥ tāṁ śaṛṇudhvaṁ muniśreṣṭhāḥ sarvakāmapradāyinīm

The worship of the Parthiva linga together with the names of Shiva has also been declared; hear that procedure, O best of sages, which fulfils every desire.

Verse 47 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.47)

हरो महेश्वरः शम्भुः शूलपाणिः पिनाकधृक् । शिवः पशुपतिश्चैव महादेव इति क्रमात् ॥ 20.47 ॥

haro maheśvaraḥ śambhuḥ śūlapāṇiḥ pinākadhṛk śivaḥ paśupatiścaiva mahādeva iti kramāt

Hara, Maheshvara, Shambhu, the trident-bearer, the wielder of the Pinaka bow, Shiva, Pashupati, and Mahadeva — in this same order these names should be used.

Verse 48 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.48)

मृदाहरणसङ्घट्टप्रतिष्ठाह्वानमेव च । स्नपनं पूजनं चैव क्षमस्वेति विसर्जनम् ॥ 20.48 ॥

mṛdāharaṇasaṅghaṭṭapratiṣṭhāhvānameva ca snapanaṁ pūjanaṁ caiva kṣamasveti visarjanam

Gathering the clay, kneading it together, installation, invocation, bathing, worship, and then, saying 'kṣamasva' (forgive me), the send-off —

Verse 49 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.49)

ऊँकारादिचतुर्थ्यन्तैर्नमोऽन्तैर्नामभिः क्रमात् । कर्तव्याश्च क्रियाः सर्वा भक्त्या परमया मुदा ॥ 20.49 ॥

ū~kārādicaturthyantairnamo’ntairnāmabhiḥ kramāt kartavyāśca kriyāḥ sarvā bhaktyā paramayā mudā

with names beginning after the vowel 'ū', in the dative case, ending in 'namaḥ', in due sequence — all these rites should be performed with the greatest devotion and joy.

Verse 50 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.50)

कृत्वा न्यासविधिं सम्यक् षडङ्गं करयोस्तथा । षडक्षरेण मन्त्रेण ततो ध्यानं समाचरेत् ॥ 20.50 ॥

kṛtvā nyāsavidhiṁ samyak ṣaḍaṅgaṁ karayostathā ṣaḍakṣareṇa mantreṇa tato dhyānaṁ samācaret

Having properly performed the six-limbed placement upon the hands, one should then perform meditation with the six-syllabled mantra (Om Namah Shivaya).

Verse 51 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.51)

कैलासपीठासनमध्यसंस्थं भक्तैः सनन्दादिभिरर्च्यमानम् । भक्तार्तिदावानलमप्रमेयं ध्यायेदुमालिङ्गितविश्वभूषणम् ॥ 20.51 ॥

kailāsapīṭhāsanamadhyasaṁsthaṁ bhaktaiḥ sanandādibhirarcyamānam bhaktārtidāvānalamaprameyaṁ dhyāyedumāliṅgitaviśvabhūṣaṇam

One should meditate on him — seated in the midst of the seat of Kailasa's pedestal, worshipped by devotees beginning with Sananda, a consuming fire to the anguish of his devotees, boundless, embraced by Uma, adorned with the whole universe.

Verse 52 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.52)

ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम् । पद्मासीनं समन्तात्स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानम् विश्वाद्यं विश्वबीजं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम् ॥ 20.52 ॥

dhyāyennityaṁ maheśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ cārucandrāvataṁsaṁ ratnākalpojjvalāṅgaṁ paraśumṛgavarābhītihastaṁ prasannam padmāsīnaṁ samantātstutamamaragaṇairvyāghrakṛttiṁ vasānam viśvādyaṁ viśvabījaṁ nikhilabhayaharaṁ pañcavaktraṁ trinetram

One should ever meditate upon Mahesha — resembling a mountain of silver, adorned with a beautiful crescent moon, his limbs radiant with jewelled ornaments, holding the axe and the excellent deer, his hand in the gesture of fearlessness, gracious, seated upon a lotus, praised on every side by hosts of immortals, wearing a tiger-skin, the origin of the universe, the seed of the universe, remover of every fear, five-faced and three-eyed.

Verse 53 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.53)

इति ध्यात्वा च सम्पूज्य पार्थिवं लिङ्गमुत्तमम् । जपेत्पञ्चाक्षरं मन्त्रं गुरुदत्तं यथाविधि ॥ 20.53 ॥

iti dhyātvā ca sampūjya pārthivaṁ liṅgamuttamam japetpañcākṣaraṁ mantraṁ gurudattaṁ yathāvidhi

Having thus meditated and worshipped the excellent Parthiva linga, one should chant, according to rule, the Panchakshara mantra given by one's guru.

Verse 54 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.54)

स्तुतिभिश्चैव देवेशं स्तुवीत प्रणमन्सुधीः । नानाभिधाभिर्विप्रेन्द्राः पठेद् वै शतरुद्रियम् ॥ 20.54 ॥

stutibhiścaiva deveśaṁ stuvīta praṇamansudhīḥ nānābhidhābhirviprendrāḥ paṭhed vai śatarudriyam

Then, praising the Lord of gods with hymns, the wise one should bow down; the foremost of brahmins should recite the Shatarudriya under its various names.

Verse 55 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.55)

ततः साक्षतपुष्पाणि गृहीत्वाञ्जलिना मुदा । प्रार्थयेच्छङ्करं भक्त्या मन्त्रैरेभिः सुभक्तितः ॥ 20.55 ॥

tataḥ sākṣatapuṣpāṇi gṛhītvāñjalinā mudā prārthayecchaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā mantrairebhiḥ subhaktitaḥ

Then, having taken unbroken rice and flowers into one's joined palms, one should joyfully pray to Shankara with devotion, using these mantras.

Verse 56 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.56)

तावकस्त्वद्गुणप्राणस्त्वच्चित्तोऽहं सदा मृड । कृपानिधे इति ज्ञात्वा भूतनाथ प्रसीद मे ॥ 20.56 ॥

tāvakastvadguṇaprāṇastvaccitto’haṁ sadā mṛḍa kṛpānidhe iti jñātvā bhūtanātha prasīda me

'I am yours, O Mrida; your very qualities are my breath, my mind is ever fixed on you — knowing you, O Lord of beings, as an ocean of compassion, be gracious to me.'

Verse 57 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.57)

अज्ञानाद्यदि वा ज्ञानाज्जपपूजादिकं मया । कृतं तदस्तु सफलं कृपया तव शङ्कर ॥ 20.57 ॥

ajñānādyadi vā jñānājjapapūjādikaṁ mayā kṛtaṁ tadastu saphalaṁ kṛpayā tava śaṅkara

'Whether done in ignorance or in knowledge, whatever japa and worship I have performed — let it, O Shankara, become fruitful through your grace.'

Verse 58 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.58)

अहं पापी महानद्य पावनश्च भवान्महान् । इति विज्ञाय गौरीश यदिच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥ 20.58 ॥

ahaṁ pāpī mahānadya pāvanaśca bhavānmahān iti vijñāya gaurīśa yadicchasi tathā kuru

'I am a sinner, and this occasion is great, and you, O great one, are the purifier — knowing this, O Lord of Gauri, do as you wish.'

Verse 59 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.59)

वेदैः पुराणैः सिद्धान्तैरृषिभिर्विविधैरपि । न ज्ञातोऽसि महादेव कुतोऽहं त्वां सदाशिव ॥ 20.59 ॥

vedaiḥ purāṇaiḥ siddhāntairṛṣibhirvividhairapi na jñāto’si mahādeva kuto’haṁ tvāṁ sadāśiva

'By the Vedas, the Puranas, the Siddhantas, and by various sages too, you, O Mahadeva, cannot be [fully] known — how then, O Sadashiva, could I know you?'

Verse 60 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.60)

यथा तथा त्वदीयोऽस्मि सर्वभावैर्महेश्वर । रक्षणीयस्त्वयाहं वै प्रसीद परमेश्वर ॥ 20.60 ॥

yathā tathā tvadīyo’smi sarvabhāvairmaheśvara rakṣaṇīyastvayāhaṁ vai prasīda parameśvara

'Yet however it be, O Maheshvara, I am yours with my whole being — I must be protected by you alone; be gracious, O Supreme Lord.'

Verse 61 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.61)

इत्येवं चाक्षतान्पुष्पाण्यारोप्य च शिवोपरि । प्रणमेद्भक्तितः शम्भुं साष्टाङ्गं विधिवन्मुने ॥ 20.61 ॥

ityevaṁ cākṣatānpuṣpāṇyāropya ca śivopari praṇamedbhaktitaḥ śambhuṁ sāṣṭāṅgaṁ vidhivanmune

Having thus offered unbroken rice and flowers upon Shiva, O sage, one should devotedly offer full prostration with eight limbs to Shambhu, according to rule.

Verse 62 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.62)

ततः प्रदक्षिणां कुर्याद्यथोक्तविधिना सुधीः । पुनः स्तुवीत देवेशं स्तुतिभिः श्रद्धयान्वितः ॥ 20.62 ॥

tataḥ pradakṣiṇāṁ kuryādyathoktavidhinā sudhīḥ punaḥ stuvīta deveśaṁ stutibhiḥ śraddhayānvitaḥ

Then the wise one should perform circumambulation according to the stated procedure; again, filled with faith, one should praise the Lord of gods once more with hymns.

Verse 63 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.63)

ततो गलरवं कृत्वा प्रणमेच्छुचिनम्रधीः । कुर्याद्विज्ञप्तिमादृत्य विसर्जनमथाचरेत् ॥ 20.63 ॥

tato galaravaṁ kṛtvā praṇamecchucinamradhīḥ kuryādvijñaptimādṛtya visarjanamathācaret

Then, making a soft murmuring sound in the throat, with a pure and humble mind, one should bow; having respectfully submitted one's petition, one should then perform the send-off.

Verse 64 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.64)

इत्युक्ता मुनिशार्दूलाः पार्थिवार्चा विधानतः । भुक्तिदा मुक्तिदा चैव शिवभक्तिविवर्धिनी ॥ 20.64 ॥

ityuktā muniśārdūlāḥ pārthivārcā vidhānataḥ bhuktidā muktidā caiva śivabhaktivivardhinī

Thus, O tigers among sages, has the Parthiva worship been declared according to rule, which grants both enjoyment and liberation, and increases devotion to Shiva.

Verse 65 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.65)

इत्यध्यायं सुचित्तेन यः पठेच्छृणुयादपि । सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥ 20.65 ॥

ityadhyāyaṁ sucittena yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādapi sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

Whoever reads this chapter with a pure mind, or even merely listens to it, his soul becomes cleansed of all sin, and he attains all his desires.

Verse 66 (shiva.vidyeshvara.20.66)

आयुरारोग्यदं चैव यशस्यं स्वर्ग्यमेव च । पुत्रपौत्रादिसुखदमाख्यानमिदमुत्तमम् ॥ 20.66 ॥

āyurārogyadaṁ caiva yaśasyaṁ svargyameva ca putrapautrādisukhadamākhyānamidamuttamam

This account bestows long life and health, brings fame and heaven, and grants happiness through sons and grandsons — this indeed is a most excellent teaching.
