Vidyeshvara Samhita · Chapter 25
The Glory of the Rudraksha
Verse 1 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.1)
sūta uvāca śaunakarṣe mahāprājña śivarūpa mahāpate śaṛṇu rudrākṣamāhātmyaṁ samāsāt kathayāmyaham
Suta said: O greatly wise sage Shaunaka, O lord in the very form of Shiva! Listen — I shall tell, in brief, the greatness of the rudraksha.
Verse 2 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.2)
śivapriyatamo jñeyo rudrākṣaḥ parapāvanaḥ darśanāt sparśanājjāpyāt sarvapāpaharaḥ smṛtaḥ
The rudraksha should be known as most dear to Shiva, supremely purifying; by sight, by touch, and by japa with it, it is held to remove all sin.
Verse 3 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.3)
purā rudrākṣamahimā devyagre kathito mune lokopakaraṇārthāya śivena paramātmanā
O sage, formerly the greatness of the rudraksha was told by Shiva, the Supreme Self, before the Goddess, for the welfare of the world.
Verse 4 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.4)
śiva uvāca śrūyatāṁ tu maheśāni rudrākṣamahimā śive kathayāmi tava prītyā bhaktānāṁ hitakāmyayā
Shiva said: Listen then, O Maheshani, O gracious one, to the greatness of the rudraksha; out of love for you, and wishing the welfare of devotees, I tell it.
Verse 5 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.5)
divyavarṣasahasrāṇi maheśāni punaḥ purā tapaḥ prakurvatastrastaṁ manaḥ saṁyamya vai mama
O Maheshani, once long ago, while performing austerity for a thousand divine years, I had restrained my mind.
Verse 6 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.6)
svatantreṇa pareśena lokopakṛtikāriṇā līlayā parameśāni cakṣurunmīlitaṁ mayā
Then I, the self-sufficient Supreme Lord, acting for the good of the world, opened my eyes, O Parameshvari, in divine play.
Verse 7 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.7)
puṭābhyāṁ cārucakṣurbhyāṁ patitā jalabindavaḥ tatrāśrubinduto jātā vṛkṣā rudrākṣasaṁjñakāḥ
From the lids of my two beautiful eyes fell drops of water; from those tear-drops arose the trees called 'rudraksha'.
Verse 8 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.8)
sthāvaratvamanuprāpya bhaktānugrahakāraṇāt te dattā viṣṇubhaktebhyaścaturvarṇebhya eva ca
Having attained the form of immovable trees, for the sake of showing grace to devotees, they were given to the devotees of Vishnu and to all four classes.
Verse 9 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.9)
bhūmau gauḍodbhavāṁścakre rudrākṣāñchivavallabhān mathurāyāmayodhyāyāṁ laṅkāyāṁ malaye tathā
On the earth I fashioned rudrakshas, dear to Shiva, arising in the Gauda land, in Mathura, in Ayodhya, in Lanka, and likewise on Mount Malaya,
Verse 10 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.10)
sahyādrau ca tathā kāśyāṁ deśeṣvanyeṣu vā tathā parānasahyapāpaughabhedanāñchrutinodanān
on the Sahyadri mountains, and likewise in Kashi, and in other lands too — for the breaking of unbearable masses of sin, impelled by the Shruti,
Verse 11 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.11)
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrā jātā mamājñayā rudrākṣāste pṛthivyāṁ tu tajjātīyāḥ śubhākṣakāḥ
Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras were created by my command; the rudrakshas on the earth correspond to those very classes, in their auspicious colours.
Verse 12 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.12)
śvetaraktāḥ pītakṛṣṇā varṇā jñeyāḥ kramād budhaiḥ svajātīyaṁ nṛbhirdhāryaṁ rudrākṣaṁ varṇataḥ kramāt
White, red, yellow, and black — these colours should be known in due order by the wise; each person should wear, in due order, the rudraksha matching his own class.
Verse 13 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.13)
varṇaistu tatphalaṁ dhāryaṁ bhuktimuktiphalepsubhiḥ śivabhaktairviśeṣeṇa śivayoḥ prītaye sadā
But the fruit of it should be worn by all classes who desire the fruit of enjoyment and liberation — especially by Shiva-devotees, always for the pleasure of Shiva and Shakti.
Verse 14 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.14)
dhātrīphalapramāṇaṁ yacchreṣṭhametadudāhṛtam badarīphalamātraṁ tu madhyamaṁ samprakīrtitam
A size equal to the amalaka fruit is declared the very best; equal to the jujube fruit is declared middling.
Verse 15 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.15)
adhamaṁ caṇamātraṁ syāt prakriyaiṣā parocyate śaṛṇu pārvati suprītyā bhaktānāṁ hitakāmyayā
Equal to a gram is held to be the lowest — this classification has been told. Listen, O Parvati, with great love, for the welfare of devotees.
Verse 16 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.16)
badarīphalamātraṁ ca yat syāt kila maheśvari tathāpi phaladaṁ loke sukhasaubhāgyavardhanam
O Maheshvari, even a rudraksha no bigger than a jujube fruit is nonetheless fruit-bearing in this world, increasing happiness and good fortune.
Verse 17 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.17)
dhātrīphalasamaṁ yat syāt sarvāriṣṭavināśanam guñjayā sadṛśaṁ yat syāt sarvārthaphalasādhanam
One equal to the amalaka fruit destroys every misfortune; one equal to a gunja-berry accomplishes the fulfilment of every desired aim.
Verse 18 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.18)
yathā yathā laghuḥ syādvai tathādhikaphalapradaḥ ekaikataḥ phalaṁ proktaṁ daśāṁśairadhikaṁ budhaiḥ
The smaller it is, the greater the fruit it bestows; the wise have declared the fruit of each successive kind to be tenfold greater than the last.
Verse 19 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.19)
rudrākṣadhāraṇaṁ proktaṁ pāpanāśanahetave tasmācca dhāraṇīyo vai sarvārthasādhano dhruvam
The wearing of rudraksha is declared to be the cause of the destruction of sin; therefore it should certainly be worn, for it surely accomplishes every purpose.
Verse 20 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.20)
yathā ca dṛśyate loke rudrākṣaḥ phaladaḥ śubhaḥ na tathā dṛśyate’nyā ca mālikā parameśvari
O Parameshvari, just as the rudraksha is seen in this world to be fruit-bearing and auspicious, no other garland is seen to be so.
Verse 21 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.21)
samāḥ snigdhā dṛḍhāḥ sthūlāḥ kaṇṭakaiḥ saṁyutāḥ śubhāḥ rudrākṣāḥ kāmadā devi bhuktimuktipradāḥ sadā
Even, smooth, firm, large, furnished with natural points, auspicious — such rudrakshas, O Devi, always grant every desire and bestow both enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 22 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.22)
kṛmiduṣṭaṁ chinnabhinnaṁ kaṇṭakairhīnameva ca vraṇayuktamavṛttaṁ ca rudrākṣān ṣaḍ vivarjayet
Worm-eaten, cut or broken, lacking natural points, wounded, and irregular in shape — these six kinds of rudraksha should be rejected.
Verse 23 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.23)
svayameva kṛtadvāraṁ rudrākṣaṁ syādihottamam yattu pauruṣayatnena kṛtaṁ tanmadhyamaṁ bhavet
A rudraksha whose piercing-hole formed naturally by itself is the best; one made by human effort is held to be middling.
Verse 24 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.24)
rudrākṣadhāraṇaṁ proktaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam rudrasaṅkhyāśataṁ dhṛtvā rudrarūpo bhavennaraḥ
The wearing of rudraksha is declared to destroy great sins; wearing a hundred, the count of the Rudras, a man becomes of Rudra's own form.
Verse 25 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.25)
ekādaśaśatānīha dhṛtvā yatphalamāpyate tatphalaṁ śakyate naiva vaktuṁ varṣaśatairapi
The fruit obtained by wearing eleven hundred rudrakshas here cannot be fully told even in a hundred years.
Verse 26 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.26)
śatārdhena yutaiḥ pañcaśatairvai mukuṭaṁ matam rudrākṣairviracetsamyagbhaktimānpuruṣo varaḥ
With five hundred and fifty rudrakshas, a crown is held to be made; the devoted, excellent man should properly fashion it from rudrakshas.
Verse 27 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.27)
tribhiḥ śataiḥ ṣaṣṭiyuktaistrirāvṛttyā tathā punaḥ rudrākṣairupavītaṁ ca nirmīyādbhaktitatparaḥ
With three hundred and sixty rudrakshas, wound in three rounds, the one devoted to devotion should fashion a sacred thread.
Verse 28 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.28)
śikhāyāṁ ca trayaṁ proktaṁ rudrakṣāṇāṁ maheśvari karṇayoḥ ṣaṭ ca ṣaṭ caiva vāmadakṣiṇayostathā
O Maheshvari, three rudrakshas are declared for the topknot; six and six for both ears, left and right.
Verse 29 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.29)
śatamekottaraṁ kaṇṭhe bāhvorvai rudrasaṅkhyayā kūrparadvārayostatra maṇibandhe tathā punaḥ
One hundred and one on the neck, by the count of the Rudras; on both elbow-joints, and likewise on both wrists,
Verse 30 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.30)
upavīte trayaṁ dhāryaṁ śivabhaktiratairnaraiḥ śeṣānurvaritānpañca sammitāndhārayetkaṭau
three should be worn on the sacred thread by men devoted to Shiva-bhakti; the remaining five should be worn on the waist.
Verse 31 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.31)
etatsaṅkhyā dhṛtā yena rudrākṣāḥ parameśvari tadrūpaṁ tu praṇamyaṁ hi stutyaṁ sarvairmaheśavat
O Parameshvari, whoever has worn rudrakshas in this complete number — his very form is to be bowed to and praised by all, just like Mahesha himself.
Verse 32 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.32)
evambhūtaṁ sthitaṁ dhyāne yadā kṛtvāsane janam śiveti vyāharaṁścaiva dṛṣṭvā pāpaiḥ pramucyate
When a person, thus adorned, sits absorbed in meditation, uttering 'Shiva,' whoever beholds him is freed from sin.
Verse 33 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.33)
śatādhikasahasrasya vidhireṣa prakīrtitaḥ tadabhāve prakāro’nyaḥ śubhaḥ samprocyate mayā
This procedure of eleven hundred has been declared; in its absence, I now tell another auspicious procedure.
Verse 34 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.34)
śikhāyāmekarudrākṣaṁ śirasā triṁśataṁ vahet pañcāśacca gale dadhyād bāhvoḥ ṣoḍaśa ṣoḍaśa
One rudraksha on the topknot, thirty on the head; fifty should be worn on the neck, sixteen and sixteen on both arms,
Verse 35 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.35)
maṇibandhe dvādaśa dviskandhe pañcaśataṁ vahet aṣṭottaraśatairmālyamupavītaṁ prakalpayet
twelve on the wrists, five hundred across both shoulders; with a hundred and eight, one should fashion a garland as the sacred thread.
Verse 36 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.36)
evaṁ sahasrarudrākṣāndhārayedyo dṛḍhavrataḥ taṁ namanti surāḥ sarve yathā rudrastathaiva saḥ
Whoever, of firm vow, thus wears a thousand rudrakshas — all the gods bow down to him; he is verily as Rudra himself.
Verse 37 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.37)
ekaṁ śikhāyāṁ rudrākṣaṁ catvāriṁśattu mastake dvātriṁśatkaṇṭhadeśe tu vakṣasyaṣṭottaraṁ śatam
One rudraksha on the topknot, forty on the head; thirty-two in the neck-region, a hundred and eight on the chest,
Verse 38 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.38)
ekaikaṁ karṇayoḥ ṣaṭ ṣaṭ bāhvoḥ ṣoḍaśa ṣoḍaśa karayo ravimānena dviguṇena munīśvara
six and six on each ear, sixteen and sixteen on both arms; O lord of sages, on the hands, double the number of the sun (twelve).
Verse 39 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.39)
saṅkhyā prītidhṛtā yena so’pi śaivajanaḥ paraḥ śivavatpūjanīyo hi vandyaḥ sarvairabhīkṣṇaśaḥ
Whoever wears this number with delight is likewise a supreme Shaiva soul, worthy of worship like Shiva, to be constantly revered by all.
Verse 40 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.40)
śirasīśānamantreṇa karṇe tatpuruṣeṇa ca aghoreṇa gale dhāryaṁ tenaiva hṛdaye’pi ca
On the head with the Ishana mantra, on the ear with the Tatpurusha; it should be worn on the neck with the Aghora mantra, and likewise on the heart with that same mantra.
Verse 41 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.41)
aghorabījamantreṇa karayordhārayetsudhīḥ pañcadaśākṣagrathitāṁ vāmadevena codare
With the Aghora seed-mantra, the wise should wear it on both hands; a string of fifteen beads with the Vamadeva mantra on the belly,
Verse 42 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.42)
pañcabrahmabhiraṅgaiśca trimālāṁ pañca sapta ca atha vā mūlamantreṇa sarvānakṣāṁstu dhārayet
with the five Brahma-limb mantras, three garlands of five and seven; or else, one may wear all the beads with the root mantra alone.
Verse 43 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.43)
madyaṁ māṁsaṁ tu laśunaṁ palāṇḍuṁ śigrumeva ca śleṣmāntakaṁ viḍvarāhaṁ bhakṣaṇe varjayettataḥ
Wine, meat, garlic, onion, the horseradish tree, phlegm-inducing food, and pork — one should avoid eating these thereafter.
Verse 44 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.44)
valakṣaṁ rudrākṣaṁ dvijatanubhireveha vihitaṁ suraktaṁ kṣatrāṇāṁ pramuditamume pītamasakṛt tato vaiśyairdhāryaṁ pratidivasabhāvaśyakamaho tathā kṛṣṇaṁ śūdraiḥ śrutigaditamārgo’yamagaje
A white rudraksha is here ordained for the bodies of brahmins; a deep red one delights kshatriyas, O Uma; a yellow one is repeatedly for vaishyas, to be worn by them daily as a necessity; and likewise a black one is for shudras — this is the path declared by the Shruti, O mountain-born one.
Verse 45 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.45)
varṇī vanī gṛhayatīrniyamena dadhyā- detadrahasyaparamo na hi jātu tiṣṭhet rudrākṣadhāraṇamidaṁ sukṛtaiśca labhyaṁ tyaktvedametadakhilānnarakān prayānti
The celibate student, the forest-dweller, the householder, and the renunciate should all wear this according to rule; this supreme secret should never be abandoned. This wearing of rudraksha is attained only through good deeds; those who abandon it go to every kind of hell.
Verse 46 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.46)
ādāvāmalakāstato laghutarā rugṇāstataḥ kaṇṭakaiḥ sandaṣṭāḥ kṛmibhistanūpakaraṇa- cchidreṇa hīnāstathā dhāryā naiva śubhepsubhiścaṇakavad rudrākṣamapyantato rudrākṣo mama liṅgamaṅgalamume sūkṣmaṁ praśastaṁ sadā
First those of amalaka size, then smaller ones, then those with broken points, bitten by worms, and lacking the piercing-hole — those desiring auspiciousness should never wear such, down even to gram-sized ones. The rudraksha, O Uma, is my own subtle, auspicious, and ever-excellent linga-form.
Verse 47 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.47)
sarvāśramāṇāṁ varṇānāṁ strīśūdrāṇāṁ śivājñayā dhāryāḥ sadaiva rudrākṣā yatīnāṁ praṇavena hi
By Shiva's command, rudrakshas should always be worn by every stage of life and every class, by women and shudras, and by renunciates together with the Pranava mantra.
Verse 48 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.48)
divā bibhradrātrikṛtai rātrau bibhraddivākṛtaiḥ prātarmadhyāhnasāyāhne mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ
One who wears by day the rudraksha strung at night, and by night the one strung by day, is freed from all sin at morning, noon, and evening.
Verse 49 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.49)
ye tripuṇḍradharā loke jaṭādhāriṇa eva ye ye rudrākṣadharāste vai yamalokaṁ prayānti na
Those in this world who bear the tripundra, and those who wear matted locks, and those who wear the rudraksha — they do not go to the world of Yama.
Verse 50 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.50)
rudrākṣamekaṁ śirasā bibharti tathā tripuṇḍraṁ ca lalāṭamadhye pañcākṣaraṁ ye hi japanti mantraṁ pūjyā bhavadbhiḥ khalu te hi sādhavaḥ
Whoever bears a single rudraksha on the head, and likewise the tripundra in the middle of the forehead, and who chants the Panchakshara mantra — such are indeed true saints, certainly to be worshipped by you.
Verse 51 (shiva.vidyeshvara.25.51)
yasyāṅge nāsti rudrākṣastripuṇḍraṁ bhālapaṭṭake mukhe pañcākṣaraṁ nāsti tamānaya yamālayam
