Chapter 102All chaptersChapter 104

Verse 1 (skanda.6.103.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ āścaryaṁ sūtaputraitadyattvayā parikīrtitam yatsthāpitāni liṁgāni rākṣasairapi vānaraiḥ

The sages said: "This is a wonder, O son of Suta, what you have told us — that lingas were established even by rakshasas and by vanaras.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.103.2)

tasmādvistarato brūhi yatrayatra yathāyathā taiḥ sthāpitāni liṁgāni yeṣu sthāneṣu sūtaja

So tell us in detail, place by place, in what manner, in which locations those lingas were established by them, O son of Suta."

Verse 3 (skanda.6.103.3)

sūta uvāca sugrīvaḥ saṁbhramitvātha kṣetraṁ sarvamaśeṣataḥ bālamaṁḍanakaṁ prāpya tatra snātvā samāhitaḥ

Suta said: Sugriva, hurrying over the whole field, reached the place called Balamandanaka, and having bathed there with a composed mind,

Verse 4 (skanda.6.103.4)

mukhaliṁgaṁ tatastatra sthāpayāmāsa śūlinaḥ tathānyairvānaraiḥ sarvairmukhaliṁgāni śūlinaḥ svasaṁjñārthaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ sthāpitāni yathecchayā

he established there a mukha-linga of the trident-bearer; and likewise all the other vanaras, O best of brahmins, established mukha-lingas of Shiva, each under his own name, according to his own wish.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.103.5)

yasteṣāṁ mukhaliṁgānāṁ karoti ghṛtakaṁbalam makarasthena sūryeṇa śivalokaṁ sa gacchati

Whoever offers a ghee-soaked covering to these mukha-lingas, when the sun stands in Makara, goes to the world of Shiva.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.103.6)

tataḥ paścimadigbhāge tasya kṣetrasya rākṣasaiḥ saṁsthāpitāni liṅgāni caturvaktrāṇi ca dvijāḥ

Then, in the western portion of that field, the rakshasas established four-faced lingas, O brahmins.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.103.7)

rāmeṇa pūrvadigbhāge prāsādānāṁ ca paṁcakam sthāpitaṁ bhaktiyuktena sarvapātakanāśanam

In the eastern portion, Rama, filled with devotion, established a group of five temples, destroying every sin.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.103.8)

tathā dakṣiṇadigbhāge kūpikā tena nirmitā ānarttīyataḍāgasya samīpe pāpanāśanī

And in the southern portion he made a well near the Anartiya tank, a well that destroys sin.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.103.9)

yastasyāṁ kurute śrāddhaṁ saṁprāpte dakṣiṇāyane so'śvamedhaphalaṁ prāpya pitṛloke mahīyate

Whoever performs a shraddha there when the southern solstice arrives obtains the fruit of a horse-sacrifice and is honored in the world of the ancestors.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.103.10)

Whoever offers a lamp there in the month of Kartika, O brahmins, never beholds those twenty-one terrible hells, nor is he ever born blind, wherever he is born.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.103.11)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ānarttīyataḍāgaṁ tatkena tatra vinirmitam kiṁprabhāvaṁ ca kārtsnyena sūtaputra prakīrtaya

The sages said: "By whom was that Anartiya tank made there, and, O son of Suta, tell us fully its power."

Verse 12 (skanda.6.103.12)

sūta uvāca ānarttīyataḍāgasya mahimā dvijasattamāḥ ekavaktreṇa no śakyo vaktuṁ varṣaśatairapi

Suta said: "The glory of the Anartiya tank, O best brahmins, cannot be told even in a hundred years by a single mouth.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.103.13)

āśvinasya site pakṣe caturdaśyāṁ samāhitaḥ snātvā devānpitṝṁścaiva tarpayedvidhipūrvakam

On the fourteenth of the bright half of Ashvina, with a composed mind, having bathed, one should offer libations to the gods and ancestors according to rule.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.103.14)

tato dīpotsavadine śrāddhaṁ kṛtvā samāhitaḥ dāmodaraṁ yamaṁ pūjya dīpaṁ dadyātsvabhaktitaḥ

Then, on the day of the festival of lamps, having performed the shraddha with a composed mind, one should worship Damodara and Yama, and offer a lamp with true devotion.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.103.15)

saṁpūjyo dharmarājastu gandhapuṣpānulepanaiḥ māṣāstilāśca dātavyā goviṁdaḥ prīyatāmiti

Dharmaraja should be worshipped with fragrance, flowers, and unguents; black gram and sesame should be offered, saying, "May Govinda be pleased."

Verse 16 (skanda.6.103.16)

tilamāṣapradānena dvijānāṁ tarpaṇena ca yamena sahito devaḥ prīyate puruṣottamaḥ

By the gift of sesame and black gram, and by the tarpana offered to brahmins, the god Purushottama, together with Yama, becomes pleased.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.103.17)

ya evaṁ kurute viprāstīrtha ānarta saṁjñite so'śvamedhaphalaṁ prāpya brahmaloke mahīyate

O brahmins, whoever does this at the tirtha named Anarta obtains the fruit of a horse-sacrifice and is honored in Brahmaloka.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.103.18)

yasmindine samāyāto rāmastatra praharṣitaḥ tasmindvijottamaiḥ sarvaiḥ proktaḥ so'bhyetya sādaram

On the day Rama arrived there, filled with joy, all the best of the twice-born approached him respectfully and spoke to him:

Verse 19 (skanda.6.103.19)

atrāgastyo muniśreṣṭhastiṣṭhate raghunaṁdana taṁ gatvā paśya viprendra mitrāvaruṇasaṁbhavam

"Here dwells Agastya, best of sages, O Raghunandana; go, best of brahmins, and behold him, born of Mitra and Varuna."

Verse 20 (skanda.6.103.20)

atha teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ vānarai rākṣasaiḥ sārdhaṁ prahṛṣṭaḥ satvaraṁ yayau

Then, hearing their words, lotus-eyed Rama went swiftly and gladly, together with the vanaras and rakshasas.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.103.21)

aṣṭāṁgapraṇipātena taṁ praṇamya raghūttamaḥ pariṣvakto dṛḍhaṁ tena sānandena mahātmanā

Having bowed to him with the eightfold prostration, the best of the Raghus was warmly embraced by that joyful great soul.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.103.22)

nātidūre tatastasya vinayena samanvitaḥ upaviṣṭo dharāpṛṣṭhe kṛtāṁjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ

Then, filled with humility, he sat down not far from him upon the ground, with folded hands.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.103.23)

tataḥ pṛṣṭastu muninā kathayāmāsa vistarāt vṛttāṁtaṁ sarvamātmīyaṁ svargasya gamanaṁ prati

Then, questioned by the sage, he related in full detail the whole account of his own affairs, of his going to heaven —

Verse 24 (skanda.6.103.24)

yathā sītā parityaktā yathā saumitriṇā kṛtaḥ parityāgaḥ svakīyasya saṁtyaktena mahātmanā

how Sita had been given up, how the renunciation of his own kin was carried out by Saumitri, that great soul who had himself been forsaken,

Verse 25 (skanda.6.103.25)

tathā sugrīvamāsādya tathaiva ca vibhīṣaṇam saṁbhāṣya cāgamastvatra tataḥ puṣpakasaṁsthitiḥ

and how, having met with Sugriva and likewise Vibhishana and spoken with them, he had then come here, and thereupon the Pushpaka had come to a halt.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.103.26)

tato'gastyaḥ kathāścitrāścakre tasya purastadā rājarṣīṇāṁ purāṇānāṁ dṛṣṭāṁtairbahubhirmuniḥ

Then Agastya related to him many wondrous stories, with numerous illustrations drawn from royal sages and the ancient lore.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.103.27)

tataḥ kathāvasāne ca calacittaṁ raghūttamam vilokya pradadau tasmai ratnābharaṇamuttamam

Then, at the end of the story, noticing that the mind of the best of the Raghus had wandered, he gave him a most excellent jeweled ornament,

Verse 28 (skanda.6.103.28)

yanna deveṣu yakṣeṣu siddhavidyādhareṣu ca nāgeṣu rākṣasendreṣu mānuṣeṣu ca kā kathā

the like of which exists neither among gods, yakshas, siddhas, nor vidyadharas, nor among nagas or the lords of rakshasas — let alone among men.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.103.29)

yasyendrāyudhasaṁghāśca niṣkrāmaṁti sahasraśaḥ rātrau tamisrapakṣe'pi lakṣyate'rkopamatviṣaḥ

from which thousands of rainbow-hued rays flash forth; even at night, in the dark fortnight, it is seen shining like the sun.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.103.30)

tadrāmastu gṛhītvā'tha vismayotphullalocanaḥ papraccha kautukāviṣṭaḥ kutastvetanmune tava

Taking that ornament, his eyes wide with wonder, Rama, filled with curiosity, asked: "Where, O sage, did you get this —

Verse 31 (skanda.6.103.31)

atyadbhutakaraṁ ratnairnirmitaṁ timirāpaham kaṇṭhābharaṇamākhyāhi nedamasti jagattraye

this most wondrous, gem-wrought neck-ornament that dispels darkness — tell me, for nothing like it exists in the three worlds?"

Verse 32 (skanda.6.103.32)

agastiruvāca yatpaśyasi raghuśreṣṭha taḍāgamidamuttamam mamāśramasamīpasthaṁ taddevadevanirmitam

Agastya said: "This excellent tank you see, O best of the Raghus, lies near my hermitage and was made by the god of gods.

Verse 33 (skanda.6.103.33)

tasya tīre mayā dṛṣṭaṁ yadāścaryamanuttamam tatte'haṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣva raghunandana

On its bank I once beheld a most extraordinary wonder; I shall now tell it to you — listen, O Raghunandana.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.103.34)

kadācidrāghavaśreṣṭha niśīthe'haṁ samutthitaḥ paśyāmi vyomamārgeṇa pradyotaṁ bhāskaropamam

Once, O best of the Raghavas, having risen at midnight, I saw a radiance in the sky's pathway, brilliant like the sun.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.103.35)

yāvattāvadvimānaṁ tadapsarogaṇarājitam tasya madhyagataścaikaḥ puruṣastaruṇastathā andhastatra samārūḍhaḥ stūyate kinnarairnṛpaḥ

And there was a chariot, resplendent with hosts of apsarases; in its midst was a single man, youthful, though blind, mounted there, being praised by the kinnaras as a king.

Verse 36 (skanda.6.103.36)

ratnābharaṇametacca bibhratkaṇṭhe sunirmalam dvādaśārkapratīkāśaṁ kāmadeva ivāparaḥ

He wore this very pure jeweled ornament at his throat, shining like twelve suns together, as though he were another god of love.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.103.37)

athottīrya vimānāgryātskaṁdhalagno raghūdvaha ekasya devadūtasya salilāṁtamupāgataḥ

Then, descending from the top of the chariot, O bearer of the Raghus, leaning on the shoulder of a divine messenger, he reached the water's edge.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.103.38)

tataśca salilāttasmādākṛṣya ca kalevaram mṛtakasya tato daṁtairbhakṣayāmāsa satvaram

Then, drawing a corpse out of that water, he began swiftly to devour it with his teeth.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.103.39)

yathāyathā mahāmāṁsaṁ sa bhakṣayati rāghava tathātathā punaḥ kāyaṁ tadrūpaṁ tatprajāyate

O Raghava, the more of that great flesh he devoured, the more his own body kept regenerating into that same form again.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.103.40)

tatastṛptiṁ cirātprāpya śucirbhūtvā praharṣitaḥ niṣkramya salilādyāvadvimānamadhirohati

Then, having attained satisfaction after a long while, and having become purified, filled with joy, he emerged from the water and mounted the chariot again.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.103.41)

tāvanmayā drutaṁ gatvā sa pṛṣṭaḥ kautukānnṛpaḥ sevyamāno'pi gandharvaiḥ samaṁtādbuddhitatparaiḥ

Just then, going swiftly, I questioned that king out of curiosity, even though he was being attended on all sides by discerning gandharvas.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.103.42)

bhobho vaimānikaśreṣṭha muhūrtaṁ pratipālaya agastirnāma vipro'haṁ mitrāvaruṇasaṁbhavaḥ

"O best of chariot-riders, wait a moment! I am a brahmin named Agastya, born of Mitra and Varuna."

Verse 43 (skanda.6.103.43)

tacchrutvā sammukho bhūtvā praṇāmamakarottataḥ taiśca vaimānikaiḥ sārdhaṁ sarvaistaiḥ kinnarādibhiḥ

Hearing that, he turned to face me and bowed, together with those chariot-riders and all the kinnaras and others.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.103.44)

so'yaṁ rājā mayā pṛṣṭaḥ kṛtānatiḥ puraḥ sthitaḥ kastvamīdṛgvapuḥ śrīmānvimānavaramāśritaḥ sevyamāno'psarobhiśca gandharvaiḥ kinnaraistathā

"This king, whom I have questioned, standing before me having bowed — who are you, of such splendid form, mounted on this excellent chariot, attended by apsarases, gandharvas, and kinnaras,

Verse 45 (skanda.6.103.45)

atrā''gatya taḍāgāṁte mahāmāṁsaprabhakṣaṇam kṛtavānasi vaikalyaṁ kasmātte dṛṣṭisaṁbhavam

who, coming here to the edge of this tank, devour that great flesh — and how did this blindness of yours come to be?"

Verse 46 (skanda.6.103.46)

vaimānika uvāca sādhu sādhu muniśreṣṭha yattvaṁ prāpto mamāntikam avaśyaṁ sānukūlo me vidhiryattvaṁ samāgataḥ

The chariot-rider said: "Well, well, best of sages, that you have come near me — surely fate has favored me that you have arrived.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.103.47)

sādhūnāṁ darśanaṁ puṇyaṁ tīrthabhūtā hi sādhavaḥ kālena phalate tīrthaṁ sadyaḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ

The sight of the virtuous is meritorious; the virtuous themselves are tirthas; a tirtha bears fruit only in time, but the company of the virtuous bears fruit at once.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.103.48)

tasmātsarvaṁ tavākhyānaṁ kathayāmi mahāmune yena me garhitaṁ bhojyaṁ vibhavaśca tathedṛśaḥ

Therefore, great sage, I shall tell you my whole story, by which this loathsome food and this condition came upon me.

Verse 49 (skanda.6.103.49)

ahamāsaṁ purā rājā śveto nāma mahāmune ānartādhipatiḥ pāpaḥ sarvalokanipīḍakaḥ

Formerly, great sage, I was a king named Shveta, lord of Anarta, a sinful man who oppressed all people.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.103.50)

na kiṁcitprāṅmayā dattaṁ na hutaṁ jātavedasi na ca rakṣā kṛtā loke na trātāḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ

I never gave anything before, nor offered anything into the sacred fire; I never protected anyone in the world, nor sheltered those who sought refuge.

Verse 51 (skanda.6.103.51)

dṛṣṭvādṛṣṭvā mayā ratnaṁ yatkiṁciddharaṇītale tadvai balāddhṛtaṁ sarvaṁ sarveṣāmiha dehinām

Whatever jewel I chanced to see anywhere upon the earth, all of it I seized by force from all those beings.

Verse 52 (skanda.6.103.52)

tataḥ kālena dīrgheṇa jarāgrastasya me balāt hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ svaputreṇa māṁ nirvāsya vigarhitam

Then, after a long time, when I was overtaken by old age, my own son forcibly seized my kingdom and banished me in disgrace.

Verse 53 (skanda.6.103.53)

tato'haṁ jarayā grasto vairāgyaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ samāyāto'tra vipreṁdra bhramamāṇa itastataḥ

Then, overtaken by old age, having reached utter detachment, I came here, O best of brahmins, wandering aimlessly from place to place.

Verse 54 (skanda.6.103.54)

tataḥ kṣutkṣāmakaṇṭho'haṁ snātvā'tra salile śubhe mṛtaśca saṁniviṣṭo'haṁ kṣudhayā paripīḍitaḥ

Then, my throat parched with hunger, having bathed here in this auspicious water, I sank down, dead, tormented by hunger.

Verse 55 (skanda.6.103.55)

prāviśyā'tra jale puṇye paṁcatvaṁ samupāgataḥ tataśca tatkṣaṇādeva vimānaṁ samupasthitam

Having entered this sacred water, I met my death; and then, at that very instant, a chariot appeared there.

Verse 56 (skanda.6.103.56)

māmanyena śarīreṇa samādāya ca kiṁkarāḥ tatrāropya tataḥ prāptā brahmaṇaḥ sadanaṁ prati

Servants took me up in another body, and, seating me upon it, brought me to the abode of Brahma.

Verse 57 (skanda.6.103.57)

divyamālyāvaradharaṁ divyagandhānulepanam divyābharaṇasaṁjuṣṭaṁ stūyamānaṁ ca kinnaraiḥ

Wearing excellent divine garlands, anointed with divine fragrance, adorned with divine ornaments, and praised by kinnaras —

Verse 58 (skanda.6.103.58)

tato brahmasabhāmadhye hyahaṁ tairdevakiṁkaraiḥ tādṛgrūpo vicakṣuśca dhārito brahmaṇaḥ puraḥ

Then, in the midst of Brahma's assembly, I — thus formed, yet without sight — was held there before Brahma by those servants of the gods.

Verse 59 (skanda.6.103.59)

sarvaiḥ sabhāgatairdṛṣṭā vismitāsyaiḥ parasparam anyaiśca nindamānaiśca dhikchabdasya prajalpakaiḥ

Seen by all those gathered in the assembly, their faces filled with mutual astonishment, and by others reviling me, muttering the word "shame" —

Verse 60 (skanda.6.103.60)

kiṁkarā ūcuḥ eṣa devaścaturvaktraḥ sabheyaṁ tasya sambhavā sarvairdevagaṇairjuṣṭā praṇāmaḥ kriyatāmiti

The servants said: "This is the four-faced god; this is his own assembly, attended by all the hosts of gods — let obeisance be made."

Verse 61 (skanda.6.103.61)

tato'haṁ praṇipatyoccaistaṁ devaṁ devasaṁyutam upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye vrīḍayā'vanataḥ sthitaḥ

Then, bowing deeply to that god, surrounded by the other gods, I sat down in the midst of the assembly, bowed low with shame.

Verse 62 (skanda.6.103.62)

yathāyathā kathāstatra prajāyante sabhātale devadvijanarendrāṇāṁ dharmākhyānāni kuṁbhaja

O Kumbhaja, the more that tales arose there on the floor of the assembly — accounts of dharma concerning gods, brahmins, and kings —

Verse 63 (skanda.6.103.63)

tathātathā mamātīva kṣudvṛddhiṁ saṁpragacchati jāne kiṁ bhakṣayāmyāśu dṛṣadaḥ kāṣṭhameva vā

the more my hunger kept mounting terribly; I did not know whether I would soon be eating stones or wood.

Verse 64 (skanda.6.103.64)

tato mayā praṇamyoccairvijñaptaḥ prapitāmahaḥ prāṇipatya muniśreṣṭha lajjāṁ tyaktvā sudūrataḥ

Then, bowing loudly, O best of sages, I petitioned the Great-grandsire, prostrating myself and casting my shame far aside.

Verse 65 (skanda.6.103.65)

kṣudhā māṁ bādhate'tīva sāṁprataṁ prapitāmaha tathā paśyāmi no kiṁcittādṛgbhojyaṁ prayaccha me

"Hunger torments me exceedingly now, O Great-grandsire; and I see nothing here of the kind of food I need — grant it to me."

Verse 66 (skanda.6.103.66)

"Hunger, thirst, and such afflictions do not exist here at all for one established in heaven — so why is this happening to me?"

Verse 67 (skanda.6.103.67)

pitāmaha uvāca tvayā nānnaṁ kvaciddattaṁ kasyacitpṛthivītale tenātrāpi bubhukṣā te vṛddhiṁ gacchati durmate

The Grandsire said: "You never gave food to anyone anywhere on the earth; that is why, O foolish one, your hunger keeps growing even here.

Verse 68 (skanda.6.103.68)

tathā hṛtāni ratnāni yāni dṛṣṭigatāni te cakṣurhīnastato jāto mama loke gato'pi ca

And likewise, whatever jewels came within your sight, you seized them all — from that, blindness has come upon you, even here in my world.

Verse 69 (skanda.6.103.69)

yastvaṁ pātakayukto'pi saṁprāpto mama maṁdiram tadvakṣyāmyakhilaṁ te'haṁ śṛṇuṣvaikamanāḥ sthitaḥ

Though you have come, laden with sin, to my dwelling, I shall now tell you everything — listen with a single-pointed mind.

Verse 70 (skanda.6.103.70)

yasmiñjale tvayā muktāḥ prāṇāḥ pāpātmanāpi ca śvetadvīpapatistatra kalikālabhayāturaḥ

In that very water where you, sinful though you were, gave up your life, the lord of Shvetadvipa dwells, distressed by dread of the age of Kali.

Verse 71 (skanda.6.103.71)

tato'sya sparśanātsadyo vimuktaḥ sarvapātakaiḥ annādānātparā pīḍā jāyate kṣutsamudbhavā

By contact with him, one is at once freed from all sins; a supreme torment born of hunger arises from failing to give food.

Verse 72 (skanda.6.103.72)

tathā ratnāpahāreṇa sañjātā cāṁdhatā tava naivānyatkāraṇaṁ kiṁcitsatyametanmayoditam

And likewise, your blindness has arisen through the theft of jewels; there is no other cause at all — this is the truth I speak.

Verse 73 (skanda.6.103.73)

tato mayā vidhiḥ proktaḥ punareva dvijottama eṣo'pi brahmalokaste narakādatiricyate tasmāttatraiva māṁ deva preṣayasva kimatra vai

Then, O best of the twice-born, I made this plea again: 'Even this Brahmaloka of yours is worse for me than hell. So, my lord, send me to that very place — what is there here for me?'

Verse 74 (skanda.6.103.74)

Brahma said: "So go there itself — you are being sent there; what more is there for you here? Your dwelling shall not be in hell, but in that place arising from Shvetadvipa.

Verse 75 (skanda.6.103.75)

māhātmyaṁ nāśamāyāti śāstraṁ syātsatyavarjitam tasmāttvaṁ nityamārūḍho vimāne traivasundare

Otherwise its greatness would come to nothing, and scripture would be devoid of truth. Therefore you shall remain forever mounted upon that beautiful chariot,

Verse 76 (skanda.6.103.76)

gatvā jalāśaye tasminyatra prāṇāḥ samujjhitāḥ tameva nijadehaṁ ca bhakṣayasva yathecchayā

and, going to that pool where you gave up your life, you shall devour that very body of yours, as you please.

Verse 77 (skanda.6.103.77)

tadbhaviṣyati madvākyādakṣayaṁ jalamadhyagam tāvatkālaṁ ca dṛṣṭiste bhojyakāle bhaviṣyati

By my word this shall unfailingly come to pass in the midst of that water; and only during the time of eating will you have your sight.

Verse 78 (skanda.6.103.78)

tato'haṁ tasya vākyena dīpotsavadine sadā niśīthe'tra samāgatya bhakṣayāmi nijāṁ tanum

Then, by his word, I come here always on the day of the lamp-festival, at midnight, and devour my own body.

Verse 79 (skanda.6.103.79)

tatastṛptiṁ pragacchāmi yāvaddaivaṁ dinaṁ sthitam mānuṣaṁ ca tathā varṣamīdṛgrūpo vyavasthitaḥ

Then I remain satisfied for as long as a day of the gods lasts — that is, a human year — abiding in this same form.

Verse 80 (skanda.6.103.80)

nāstyasādhyaṁ muniśreṣṭha tava kiṁcijjagattraye yenaikaṁ culukaṁ kṛtvā nipītaḥ payasāṁ nidhiḥ

Nothing is impossible for you, best of sages, in the three worlds — you who, with a single cupped handful, drank up the very ocean.

Verse 81 (skanda.6.103.81)

tasmānmune dayāṁ kṛtvā mamopari mahattarām māmuddhara suduḥkhārtamasmātsarvajanairghṛṇitāt

Therefore, sage, showing the greatest compassion toward me, deliver me, so grievously afflicted, from this condition scorned by all people.

Verse 82 (skanda.6.103.82)

tathā dṛṣṭipradānaṁ me kuruṣva munisattama nirviṇṇo'smyaṁdhabhāvena nānyā tvatto'sti me gatiḥ

And grant me too the gift of sight, best of sages; I am utterly weary of this blindness — there is no refuge for me but you."

Verse 83 (skanda.6.103.83)

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kṛpayā mama mānasam dravībhūtaṁ tadā vākyamavocaṁ taṁ raghūttama

Hearing his words, my mind melted with compassion; then I spoke this word to him, O best of the Raghus:

Verse 84 (skanda.6.103.84)

tvamannaniṣkrayaṁ dehi kaṇṭhasthamiha bhūṣaṇam yena nāśaṁ prayātyeṣā bubhukṣā jaṭharodbhavā

'Give, as payment for food, this very ornament resting at your throat, by which this hunger born of the belly may be destroyed.

Verse 85 (skanda.6.103.85)

tathā'dyaprabhṛti prājña ratnadīpānsunirmalān atraiva sarasastīre dehi dāmodarāya ca

And from this day forward, O wise one, offer pure jeweled lamps here on the bank of this lake to Damodara,

Verse 86 (skanda.6.103.86)

tena dānena te yena saṁjāyate dṛṣṭiḥ śāśvatī tava nirmalā mama vākyādasaṁdigdhaṁ satyenātmānamālabhe

by that gift you shall obtain a pure and everlasting sight; by my word, without doubt, I pledge this in truth upon myself.'

Verse 87 (skanda.6.103.87)

rājovāca mamopari dayāṁ kṛtvā tvameva munisattama gṛhāṇa ratnasaṁbhūtaṁ kaṇṭhābharaṇamuttamam

The king said: "Having shown compassion toward me, you yourself, best of sages, take this excellent jeweled neck-ornament."

Verse 88 (skanda.6.103.88)

tato dayābhibhūtena mayā tasya pratigrahaḥ niḥspṛheṇāpi saṁcīrṇo muninā raṇyavāsinā

Then, overcome with compassion, though I was a desireless, forest-dwelling sage, I accepted that gift from him.

Verse 89 (skanda.6.103.89)

tataḥ prakṣālya me pādau yāvattenānnaniṣkraye vibhūṣaṇamidaṁ dattaṁ sadbhaktyā bhāvitātmane

Then, having washed my feet — and until I could give him food in exchange — I gave this ornament to him, that earnest soul, with true devotion.

Verse 90 (skanda.6.103.90)

tatastasya praṇaṣṭā sā bubhukṣā tatkṣaṇānnṛpa saṁjātā paramā tṛptirdevapīyūṣasaṁbhavā

Then his hunger was destroyed that very instant, O king, and a supreme satisfaction arose in him, like that born of the nectar of the gods.

Verse 91 (skanda.6.103.91)

tasya naṣṭaṁ mṛtaṁ kāyaṁ tacca jīrṇaṁ purodbhavam yadāsīdakṣayaṁ nityaṁ tasmiṁstoye vyavasthitam

His dead, decayed body, of long standing, then vanished — that body which had remained forever imperishable there in that water.

Verse 92 (skanda.6.103.92)

tataḥ saṁsthāpitastena tasminsthāne subhaktitaḥ dāmodaro raghuśreṣṭha kṛtvā prāsādamuttamam

Then he, with true devotion, established Damodara in that very place, having built an excellent temple, O best of the Raghus.

Verse 93 (skanda.6.103.93)

tasyāgre śraddhayā yukto dīpaṁ dadyādyathāyathā tathātathā bhaveddṛṣṭistasya nityaṁ sunirmalām

Before it, filled with faith, the more he offered lamps, in due course, the more his sight kept growing ever purer.

Verse 94 (skanda.6.103.94)

Then, within a month, that lord of the earth attained divine sight and became the foremost of kings, most cherished among the virtuous.

Verse 95 (skanda.6.103.95)

tataḥ provāca māṁ hṛṣṭaḥ praṇipatya kṛtāṁjaliḥ harṣagadgadayā vācā prasthitastridivaṁ prati

Then he spoke to me joyfully, with folded hands, having bowed, in a voice choked with delight, as he set out toward heaven:

Verse 96 (skanda.6.103.96)

tvatprasādātpraṇaṣṭā me bubhukṣā'tisudāruṇā tathā dṛṣṭiśca saṁjātā divyā brāhmaṇasattama

"By your grace, that most dreadful hunger of mine has been destroyed, and divine sight too has arisen in me, O best of brahmins.

Verse 97 (skanda.6.103.97)

anujñāṁ dehi me tasmādyena gacchāmi sāṁpratam brahmalokaṁ muniśreṣṭha tīrthasyāsya prabhāvataḥ

So grant me leave, that I may now go to Brahmaloka, best of sages, by the power of this tirtha."

Verse 98 (skanda.6.103.98)

Then, released by me, bowing again and again, he went, his soul rejoicing, to the eternal Brahmaloka.

Verse 99 (skanda.6.103.99)

evaṁ me bhūṣaṇamidaṁ jātaṁ hastagataṁ purā tava yogyamidaṁ jñātvā tubhyaṁ tena niveditam

In this way this ornament came into my hands long ago; recognizing it as fitting for you, I have now presented it to you.

Verse 100 (skanda.6.103.100)

tataḥ prabhṛti rājeṁdra samāgatyātra mānavāḥ ratnadīpānpradāyoccaiḥ snātvā'tra salile śubhe kārtike māsi niryāṁti dehāṁte tridivālayam

From then on, O lord of kings, men who come here and, having bathed in this auspicious water in the month of Kartika, offer jeweled lamps, go to the abode of heaven at the end of the body.

Verse 101 (skanda.6.103.101)

ye punaḥ prāṇasaṁtyāgaṁ prakurvaṁti samāhitāḥ pāpātmāno'pi te yāṁti brahmalokaṁ raghūttama

And those who, composed in mind, give up their lives here — even those of sinful soul — go to Brahmaloka, O best of the Raghus.

Verse 102 (skanda.6.103.102)

tato dṛṣṭvā sahasrākṣaḥ prabhāvaṁ tajjalodbhavam pāṁsubhiḥ pūrayāmāsa samaṁtādbhayasaṁkulam

Then Indra, seeing that power arising from that water, filled it on every side with dust, overcome with dread.

Verse 103 (skanda.6.103.103)

tadadya divasaḥ prāpto dīpotsavasamudbhavaḥ supuṇyo'tra mamādeśāttvaṁ kuruṣva sukūpikām

"That very highly auspicious day of the lamp-festival has now arrived; by my command, make here an excellent well.

Verse 104 (skanda.6.103.104)

tasyāṁ snānaṁ vidhāyātha pitṝṁstarpaya rāghava devasyāsya puro dehi ratnadīpamanuttamam

Having bathed in it, then offer libations to your ancestors, O Raghava; before this god, present an unrivaled jeweled lamp.

Verse 105 (skanda.6.103.105)

yena saṁjāyate siddhirbrahmalokasamudbhavā anenaiva śarīreṇa satyametanmayoditam

By this, the accomplishment born of Brahmaloka arises — with this very body — this is the truth I speak.

Verse 106 (skanda.6.103.106)

tataste rāghavādeśātsarve rākṣasavānarāḥ tasmindeśe vinidadhuḥ kūpikāṁ vimalodakām

Then, at Raghava's command, all those rakshasas and vanaras made a well of pure water in that place.

Verse 107 (skanda.6.103.107)

tatra snātvā pitṝṁstarpya ratnadīpaṁ pradāya ca samastaṁ kārtikaṁ yāvadayodhyāṁ prasthitāstataḥ

Bathing there, offering libations to their ancestors, and presenting a jeweled lamp, they remained there through the whole of Kartika, then set out toward Ayodhya.

Verse 108 (skanda.6.103.108)

tato vibhīṣaṇaṁ muktvā hanūmaṁtaṁ ca vānaram brahmalokaṁ gatāḥ sarve tattīrthasya prabhāvataḥ

Then, except for Vibhishana and the vanara Hanuman, all of them went to Brahmaloka, by the power of that tirtha.

Verse 109 (skanda.6.103.109)

sūta uvāca adyāpi dīpadānaṁ yaḥ kurute tatra sādaram saṁprāpte kārtike māsi snātvā tatra jale śubhe sa sarvapātakairmukto brahmaloke mahīyate

Suta said: Even today, whoever there reverently offers the gift of a lamp, and, when the month of Kartika arrives, bathes there in that auspicious water, is freed from all sins and is honored in Brahmaloka.

Verse 110 (skanda.6.103.110)

evaṁ tatra samutpannaṁ tattaḍāgaṁ śubhāvaham ānarttīyaṁ tathā viṣṇukūpikā sā ca śobhanā

Thus that auspicious tank arose there — the Anartiya — and likewise that beautiful well of Vishnu.
