With saffron, aloewood, camphor, flowers, and various fragrant substances, they, and the king too, worshipped her image day after day.
Verse 23 (skanda.6.113.23)

O best of brahmins, then the female ascetics, standing before that city and gladdening the king, spoke to one another.
Verse 24 (skanda.6.113.24)

sūta uvāca evaṁ tatra pure tena bhūbhujā sumahātmanā aṣṭaṣaṣṭiṁ ca saṁsthāpya gotrāṇāṁ nirvṛtiḥ kṛtā
Suta said: Thus, in that city, by that great-souled king, having established sixty-eight gotras, contentment was secured for them.
Verse 28 (skanda.6.113.28)
teṣāmapi ca catvāri gotrāṇyuragajādbhayāt gatāni tatra yatra syustāni pūrvodbhavāni ca catuḥṣaṣṭiḥ sthitā tatra pure śeṣā dvijanmanām
Of those, four gotras, out of fear of a great serpent, went back to that place from which they had originally sprung; the remaining sixty-four of the twice-born remained settled in that city.
Verse 29 (skanda.6.113.29)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kīdṛṅnāgabhayaṁ teṣāṁ yena te vigatā vibho parityajya nijaṁ sthānametanno vistarādvada
The sages said: "O lord, what kind of serpent-fear was it, on account of which they departed, abandoning their own place? Tell us this in detail."
Verse 30 (skanda.6.113.30)
sūta uvāca ānarttādhipatiḥ pūrvamāsīnnāmnā prabhaṁjanaḥ dharmajñaḥ supratāpī ca parapakṣakṣayāvahaḥ
Suta said: There was formerly a lord of Anarta named Prabhanjana — a knower of dharma, of great power, who brought ruin upon the ranks of his enemies.
Verse 31 (skanda.6.113.31)
tatastasya suto jajñe prāpte vayasi paścime aniṣṭasthānasaṁstheṣu graheṣu dvijasattamāḥ
O best of brahmins, then, when he had reached his final years, a son was born to him, while the planets stood in inauspicious positions.
Verse 32 (skanda.6.113.32)
tatastena samāhūya daivajñāñchāstrapaṁḍitān teṣāṁ niveditaṁ sarvaṁ kālaṁ tasya samudbhavam
Then, having summoned astrologers learned in the scriptures, he related to them the whole time of that son's birth.
Verse 33 (skanda.6.113.33)
daivajñā ūcuḥ eṣa te pṛthivīpāla jātaḥ putraḥ sugarhita kāle'niṣṭaprade raudre gaṁḍāṁtatritayodbhave
The astrologers said: "O protector of the earth, this most inauspicious son of yours has been born at a terrible, ill-omened moment, arisen under a triple gandanta conjunction."
Verse 34 (skanda.6.113.34)
kathaṁcidapi yadyeṣa jīvayiṣyati pārthiva pitṛmātṛpurārthe ca deśānutsādayiṣyati
"O king, if by some chance he should live, he will bring ruin upon his father, mother, city, and country."
Verse 35 (skanda.6.113.35)
rājovāca asti kaścidupāyo'tra daivo vā mānuṣo'pi vā yena saṁjāyate kṣemaṁ putrasya viṣayasya ca
The king said: "Is there some remedy here, divine or human, by which the welfare of my son and my kingdom might be secured?"
Verse 36 (skanda.6.113.36)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ yathā samutthitaṁ yaṁtraṁ yaṁtreṇa pratihanyate yathā bāṇaprahārāṇāṁ kavacaṁ vāraṇaṁ bhavet tathā grahavikārāṇāṁ śāṁtirbhavati vāraṇam
The brahmins said: "As one engine that rises up is countered by another engine, and as armor serves as a defense against the blows of arrows, so a peace-rite is the defense against the afflictions of the planets."
Verse 37 (skanda.6.113.37)
tasmānnityamanudvignaḥ śāṁtikaṁ kuru bhūpate yena sarve grahāḥ saumyā jāyaṁte ca śubhāvahāḥ
"Therefore, O king, ever undisturbed, perform the peace-rite continually, by which all the planets become gentle and bring about good fortune."
Verse 38 (skanda.6.113.38)
aniṣṭasthānasaṁstheṣu graheṣu viṣameṣu ca tataḥ sa satvaṁ gatvā camatkārapuraṁ nṛpaḥ
Since the planets stood in inauspicious and adverse houses, that king then went with all speed to Chamatkarapura.
Verse 39 (skanda.6.113.39)
tatra viprānsamāveśya sarvānprovāca sādaram vayaṁ yuṣmatprasādena rājyaṁ kurmaḥ sadaiva hi
There, assembling all the brahmins, he addressed them respectfully: "It is by your grace alone that we ever rule this kingdom."
Verse 40 (skanda.6.113.40)
ye'tītā ye bhaviṣyaṁti vaṁśe'smākaṁ nṛpottamāḥ bhavaṁto'tra gatisteṣāṁ sasyānāṁ nīrado yathā
"Whatever excellent kings have passed, and whatever ones shall come in our lineage — you are their refuge here, as a rain-cloud is to the crops."
Verse 41 (skanda.6.113.41)
yadatra matsuto jāto duṣṭasthānasthitairgrahaiḥ daivajñaiḥ śāṁtikaṁ proktaṁ tasyāniṣṭasya śāṁtidam
"Since my son was born here with the planets in evil houses, the astrologers have prescribed a peace-rite that grants relief from that ill fortune."
Verse 42 (skanda.6.113.42)
tasmātkuruta vipreṁdrā yathoktaṁ śāṁtikaṁ mama na putraśca rāṣṭraṁ ca vibhavaśca vivardhate
"Therefore, O lords of brahmins, perform for me the prescribed peace-rite, by which my son, my kingdom, and my prosperity may increase."
Verse 43 (skanda.6.113.43)
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ procuḥ saṁmaṁtryā'tha parasparam kṣemāya tava bhūnātha kariṣyāmo'tra śāṁtikam
Then those brahmins, having consulted among themselves, said: "O lord of the earth, for your welfare we shall perform the peace-rite here."
Verse 44 (skanda.6.113.44)
sadaiva niyatāḥ saṁtaḥ śāṁtāḥ ṣoḍaśa te dvijāḥ upahārāḥ sadā preṣyāstvayā bhaktyā mahīpate māsāṁte cābhiṣekaśca grāhyo rudraghaṭodbhavaḥ
"Sixteen restrained and peaceful brahmins shall always be engaged in this; O king, offerings must always be sent by you with devotion, and at month's end the consecration-water arisen from the Rudra-vessel must be received."
Verse 45 (skanda.6.113.45)
evaṁ prakurvatastubhyaṁ putro vṛddhiṁ prayāsyati tathā rāṣṭraṁ ca kośaśca yaccānyadapi kiṁcana
"If you act thus, your son shall attain prosperity, and likewise your kingdom, your treasury, and whatever else there may be."
Verse 46 (skanda.6.113.46)
tataḥ praṇamya tānhṛṣṭo gatvā nijaniveśanam utsavaṁ putrajanmotthaṁ cakre taiḥ preritaḥ sadā
Then, bowing to them, delighted, he went to his own dwelling, and, ever guided by them, held the festival for his son's birth.
Verse 47 (skanda.6.113.47)
saṁbhārānpreṣayāmāsa camatkārapure tataḥ māsāṁte cābhiṣekaśca grāhyo vai vidhipūrvakam
He then sent the necessary materials to Chamatkarapura, so that at month's end the consecration-water might duly be received according to rule.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.113.48)
te'pi brāhmaṇaśārdūlāścātuścaraṇasaṁbhavāḥ krameṇa śāṁtikaṁ cakrurbrahmacaryaparāyaṇāḥ
Those tigers among brahmins, versed in all four branches of the Veda and devoted to celibacy, performed the peace-rite in due order.
Verse 49 (skanda.6.113.49)
māsaṁ māsaṁ prati sadā śāṁtā dāṁtā jiteṁdriyāḥ tato māsāvasāne'nye cakrustacchāṁtikaṁ dvijāḥ
Month after month, ever peaceful, self-controlled, and of subdued senses, other brahmins in turn performed that peace-rite at the month's end.
Verse 50 (skanda.6.113.50)
so'pi rājā'tha māsāṁte samāgatya subhaktitaḥ abhiṣekaṁ samādāya pūjayitvā dvijottamān
The king too, at month's end, would come with great devotion, receive the consecration-water, and worship the best of the brahmins.
Verse 51 (skanda.6.113.51)
vāsobhirmukuṭaiścaiva gobhūdānena kevalam saṁtarpyānyāṁstathā viprānsvasthānaṁ yāti bhūmipaḥ
With garments and crowns, and simply through the gift of cows and land, having gratified the other brahmins as well, the king would return to his own place.
Verse 52 (skanda.6.113.52)
evaṁ pravartamāne ca śāṁtike tatra bhūpateḥ jagāma sumahānkālaḥ kṣemārogyadhanāgamaiḥ
Thus, with the king's peace-rite proceeding in this way, a very long time passed, marked by the coming of welfare, health, and wealth.
Verse 53 (skanda.6.113.53)
kasyacittvatha kālasya māsādāvapi bhūpateḥ prārabdhe śāṁtike tasminmahāvyādhirajāyata
But after some time, even at the very start of a month, while that peace-rite was just beginning, a great disease broke out upon the king.
Verse 54 (skanda.6.113.54)
tatputrasya viśeṣeṇa tathaivāṁtaḥpurasya ca rāṣṭrasya ca samagrasya vāhanānāṁ tathā kṣayaḥ
There was destruction, especially of his son, and likewise of the royal household, of the entire kingdom, and of the animals as well.
Verse 55 (skanda.6.113.55)
sa tataḥ preṣayāmāsa śāṁtyarthaṁ tatra satpure susaṁbhārānviśeṣeṇa dakṣiṇāśca viśeṣataḥ
He then sent, for the sake of the peace-rite, to that excellent city, especially abundant materials and, in particular, sacrificial fees.
Verse 56 (skanda.6.113.56)
yathāyathā dvijāstatra homaṁ kurvaṁti pāvake tathā sarve viśeṣeṇa rogā vardhaṁti sarvaśaḥ
Yet the more the brahmins there performed the fire-oblation, the more all the diseases increased everywhere, all the more.
Verse 57 (skanda.6.113.57)
mriyante vājinastasya bṛhanto vāraṇāstathā śatravaḥ sarvakāṣṭhāsu vigrahārthamupasthitāḥ
His horses died, and likewise his great elephants; and enemies appeared from every direction, ready for war.
Verse 58 (skanda.6.113.58)
tataḥ sa vyākulībhūto rogagrasto mahīpatiḥ camatkārapuraṁ prāpya sarvānviprānuvāca ha
Then that agitated, disease-stricken king went to Chamatkarapura and spoke to all the brahmins.
Verse 59 (skanda.6.113.59)
yuṣmābhiḥ svāmibhiḥ saṁsthairāpado'bhibhavaṁti mām tatkimetanmahābhāgāḥ kṣīyante mama saṁpadaḥ rogāścaiva vivardhaṁte śatrusaṁghaiḥ samanvitāḥ
"Even with you, my lords, established here, misfortunes overwhelm me. What is this, O illustrious ones? My wealth is dwindling, diseases are increasing, and I am beset by hosts of enemies."
Verse 60 (skanda.6.113.60)
tasmādviśeṣato homaḥ kāryo rogapraśāṁtaye dānāni ca viśiṣṭāni pradāsyāmi dvijanmanām
"Therefore let the fire-oblation be performed with special intensity, for the pacification of the disease; and I shall give special gifts to the brahmins."
Verse 61 (skanda.6.113.61)
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve pratyakṣaṁ tasya bhūpateḥ cakruḥ samāhitā bhūtvā śāṁtikaṁ taddhitāya ca
Then all those brahmins, becoming focused, performed the peace-rite in the very presence of the king, for his welfare.
Verse 62 (skanda.6.113.62)
yathāyathā prayuñjīranhomāṁte susamāhitāḥ tathātathāsya bhūpasya vṛddhiṁ rogaḥ pragacchati
Yet, the more they, well-focused, performed the fire-oblation to its end, the more the king's disease continued to grow.
Verse 63 (skanda.6.113.63)
etasminnaṁtare kruddhāste sarve dvijasattamāḥ grahānuddiśya sūryādīñchāpāya kṛtaniścayāḥ
Meanwhile, all those best of brahmins, enraged, resolved to curse the planets, beginning with the Sun.
Verse 64 (skanda.6.113.64)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ pūjitā api sadbhaktyā vidhānena tathā grahāḥ pīḍayaṁti puraṁ rājñaḥ saputrapaśubāṁdhavam
The brahmins said: "Though the planets have been worshipped with true devotion and according to rule, they still torment the king's city, together with his son, cattle, and kin."
Verse 65 (skanda.6.113.65)
evaṁ te niścayaṁ kṛtvā śucībhūya samāhitāḥ yāvadyacchaṁti tacchāpaṁ grahebhyaḥ krodhamūrchitāḥ
Thus resolved, and having purified themselves, focused and overcome with anger, they were just about to pronounce that curse upon the planets...
Verse 66 (skanda.6.113.66)
tāvadvahniruvācedaṁ mūrto bhūtvā dvijottamān mā prayacchata vipreṁdrāḥ śāpaṁ kopātkathaṁcana
...just then Fire, taking bodily form, spoke to those best of brahmins: "O lords of brahmins, do not, in anger, give this curse in any way."
Verse 67 (skanda.6.113.67)
grahebhyo doṣamuktebhyaḥ śrūyatāṁ vacanaṁ mama māsimāsi prakurvaṁti homaṁ te ṣoḍaśa dvijāḥ
"Hear my word — the fault does not lie with the blameless planets. Month after month, those sixteen brahmins perform the fire-oblation."
Verse 68 (skanda.6.113.68)
teṣāṁ madhyasthitaścaikastrijāto brāhmaṇādhamaḥ tena taddūṣitaṁ dravyaṁ samagraṁ homasaṁbhavam
"Among them stands one lowly brahmin of mixed lineage (trijata); because of him, all the substance meant for the oblation has become impure."
Verse 69 (skanda.6.113.69)
"The planets, headed by the Sun, do not accept what I offer to them; and because of this, they inflict this greater affliction on the king."
Verse 70 (skanda.6.113.70)
tasmādenaṁ parityajya homaṁ kuruta mā ciram yena prītiṁ parāṁ yāṁti grahāḥ sarve'rkapūrvakāḥ
"Therefore, setting this man aside, perform the oblation without delay, so that all the planets, headed by the Sun, may attain the highest satisfaction."
Verse 71 (skanda.6.113.71)
ārogyaśca bhavedrājā gataśatruḥ sutānvitaḥ satataṁ sukhamabhyeti macchāṁtikaprabhāvataḥ
"Then the king shall become healthy, free of enemies, blessed with his son, and shall constantly attain happiness through the power of my peace-rite."
Verse 72 (skanda.6.113.72)
Having spoken thus, that lord Fire vanished from sight; and those brahmins too became downcast, overcome with great shame.
Verse 73 (skanda.6.113.73)
tatastaṁ pāvakaṁ bhūyaḥ stuvaṁtastatra ca sthitāḥ procurvaiśvānaraṁ brūhi trijāto yo'tra ca dvijaḥ
Then, standing there, praising Fire once again, they said: "O Vaishvanara, tell us which brahmin here is of mixed lineage."
Verse 74 (skanda.6.113.74)
yena taṁ saṁparityajya kurmaḥ karma praśāṁtaye niḥśeṣameva doṣāṇāṁ bhūpasyāsya mahātmanaḥ
"So that, casting him aside, we may perform this rite for the complete pacification of all the afflictions of this great-souled king."
Verse 75 (skanda.6.113.75)
vahniruvāca nāhaṁ doṣaṁ dvijeṁdrāṇāṁ jānannapi kathaṁcana bravīmi brāhmaṇā vandyā mama sarve dharātale
Fire said: "Even knowing the fault of these lords of the twice-born, I shall not, in any way, declare it — for all brahmins on this earth are to be revered by me."
Verse 76 (skanda.6.113.76)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ yadi taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ vahne nāsmākaṁ kīrtayiṣyasi tatte śāpaṁ pradāsyāmastasmācchīghraṁ vadasva naḥ
The brahmins said: "O Fire, if you will not name that brahmin to us, then we shall give a curse to you; therefore tell us quickly."
Verse 77 (skanda.6.113.77)
sūta uvāca teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vahnirbhayasamanvitaḥ ciraṁ viciṁtayāmāsa kurve'taḥ kiṁ śubhāvaham
Suta said: Hearing their words, Fire, filled with fear, pondered for a long while: "What now shall I do that would be auspicious?"
Verse 78 (skanda.6.113.78)
brāhmaṇaṁ dūṣayiṣyāmi yadi tāvacca pātakam bhaviṣyati na saṁdehaḥ śāpaścāpi tadudbhavaḥ
"If I malign a brahmin, then, without doubt, sin will arise from it, and a curse born of that as well."
Verse 79 (skanda.6.113.79)
kīrtayiṣyāmi vā naiva vidyamānaṁ dvijottamam śapiṣyati na saṁdehaḥ kruddhā āśīviṣopamāḥ
"But if I do not name the brahmin who indeed exists, then these brahmins, enraged and like venomous serpents, will without doubt curse me."
Verse 80 (skanda.6.113.80)
evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya gātre svedo'bhavanmahān yena tatpūritaṁ kuṇḍaṁ homārthaṁ yatprakalpitam
As he pondered thus, so great a sweat broke out on his body that the fire-pit prepared for the oblation became filled with it.
Verse 81 (skanda.6.113.81)
tataḥ provāca tānviprānkṛtāṁjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ vepamāno bhayatrastaḥ kuṇḍānniṣkramya pāvakaḥ
Then Fire, trembling and terrified, came out of the pit, and, standing with joined palms, spoke to those brahmins.
Verse 82 (skanda.6.113.82)
nāhaṁ svajihvayā doṣaṁ brāhmaṇasya samudbhavam kathañcitkīrtayiṣyāmi tasmācchṛṇvantu bho dvijāḥ
"I shall in no way, with my own tongue, utter the fault that has arisen in a brahmin; therefore, O brahmins, listen."
Verse 83 (skanda.6.113.83)
atra svedajale viprā ye sthitāḥ ṣoḍaśa dvijāḥ te snānamadya kurvaṁtu praviśuddhyarthamātmanaḥ
"Let the sixteen brahmins who stand here bathe today in this water of sweat, for the sake of their own purification."
Verse 84 (skanda.6.113.84)
eteṣāṁ madhyago yaśca trijātaḥ sa bhaviṣyati tasya visphoṭakairyuktaṁ snātasyāṁgaṁ bhaviṣyati
"Whoever among them is of mixed lineage — his body, after bathing, shall break out in blisters."
Verse 85 (skanda.6.113.85)
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve kramāttatra nimajjanam cakruḥ śuddhiṁ gatāścāpi muktvaikaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ tadā
Then all those brahmins bathed there in turn, one by one, and all attained purity — except for one brahmin.
Verse 86 (skanda.6.113.86)
hāhākārastato jajñe mahāṁstatra janodbhavaḥ dṛṣṭvā visphoṭakairyuktamakasmāttaṁ dvijottamam
A great outcry then arose among the people gathered there, on suddenly seeing that brahmin covered with blisters.
Verse 87 (skanda.6.113.87)
so'pi lajjānvito vipraḥ kṛtvā'dho vadanaṁ tataḥ niṣkrāṁto'tha sabhāmadhyātsthānādviprasamudbhavāt
That brahmin too, overcome with shame, casting his face downward, then departed from the midst of the assembly, from that gathering-place of brahmins.
Verse 88 (skanda.6.113.88)
vahniruvāca etadvaḥ sādhitaṁ kṛtyaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ dvijottamāḥ tasmādyāsye nijaṁ sthānaṁ bhavadbhiḥ pāramāpitaḥ
Fire said: "O best of brahmins, this task promised by me earlier has now been accomplished; therefore, having by you been brought to its fulfillment, I shall go to my own place."
Verse 89 (skanda.6.113.89)
na vṛthā darśanaṁ me syādapi svapre dvijottamāḥ tasmātsamprārthyatāṁ kiṁcidabhīṣṭaṁ hṛdi saṁsthitam
"O best of brahmins, a sight of me never goes in vain, even in a dream; therefore ask now for whatever desire is fixed in your heart."
Verse 90 (skanda.6.113.90)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ etattava jalaṁ vahne svedajaṁ sarvadaiva tu sthiraṁ bhavatu cātraiva viśuddhyarthaṁ dvijanmanām
The brahmins said: "O Fire, may this water of yours, born of your sweat, remain here forever, for the purification of the twice-born."
Verse 91 (skanda.6.113.91)
anyajāto naro yo'tra prakaroti nimajjanam tasya cihnaṁ tvayā kāryaṁ visphoṭakasamudbhavam
"Whatever man of impure birth bathes here, upon him a mark, arising as a blister, must be made by you."
Verse 92 (skanda.6.113.92)
bāḍhamityeva sa procya gato'ntardhānameva hi pāvakaste dvijāḥ sarve maṁtraṁ cakruḥ parasparam
Saying only "So be it," Fire vanished from sight; and all those brahmins consulted with one another.
Verse 93 (skanda.6.113.93)
adyaprabhṛti sarveṣāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ samudbhavam śuddhiratra prakartavyā pitṛmātṛsamudbhavā
"From this day forward, the purity of every brahmin's birth, arising from father and mother, shall be established here in this way."
Verse 94 (skanda.6.113.94)
camatkārapurottho yaḥ kaścidvipraḥ prakīrtitaḥ so'tra snāto viśuddhaśca vijñeyaḥ kulaputrakaḥ
"Whatever brahmin renowned as being of Chamatkarapura bathes here and is found pure, he is to be recognized as a true son of the lineage."
Verse 95 (skanda.6.113.95)
tasmai kanyā pradātavyā sa śrāddhārho bhaviṣyati dharmakṛtyeṣu sarveṣu yojanīyaḥ sa eva hi
"To him a maiden should be given in marriage; he shall be worthy to receive shraddha offerings; and he alone is to be engaged in all rites of dharma."
Verse 96 (skanda.6.113.96)
aṣṭaṣaṣṭiṣu gotreṣu militeṣu yathākramam tatpratyakṣaṁ viśuddho yaḥ sa śuddhaḥ paṁktipāvanaḥ
"When the sixty-eight gotras gather together in due order, whoever is proven pure before them all is truly pure, one who sanctifies the row of diners."
Verse 97 (skanda.6.113.97)
apavādāśca ye kecidbrahmahatyādikāḥ sthitāḥ anye'pi durjanaiḥ proktā dharmasandehakārakāḥ
"Whatever accusations there may be, such as brahmin-slaying and the like, and other charges made by wicked people that cast doubt upon one's dharma..."
Verse 98 (skanda.6.113.98)
te sarve'tra viśuddhāḥ syurvijñeyāḥ kulaputrakāḥ apavādāstathā cānye nāśaṁ yāsyaṁti cākhilāḥ
"...all of these, once purified here, shall be recognized as true sons of the lineage; and all such accusations and other charges shall come entirely to nothing."
Verse 99 (skanda.6.113.99)
"As long as this bath has not been performed here openly before all the twice-born, until then he clearly cannot be considered a true brahmin."
Verse 100 (skanda.6.113.100)
sūta uvāca evaṁ te samayaṁ kṛtvā camatkārapurodbhavāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ śāṁtikaṁ cakrurhitārthaṁ tasya bhūpateḥ
Suta said: Thus, having made this pact, the brahmins of Chamatkarapura performed the peace-rite for the welfare of that king.
Verse 101 (skanda.6.113.101)
tasminkuṇḍe tataḥ snānaṁ kṛtaṁ sarvairmahātmabhiḥ bhayatrastairviśuddhyarthaṁ śeṣairapi mahātmabhiḥ
In that pit, then, all those great souls, terrified, bathed for the sake of purification, and so too did the remaining great souls.
Verse 102 (skanda.6.113.102)
O brahmins, then that king, at that very moment, became free of disease. O best of brahmins, whoever bathes there even today...
Verse 103 (skanda.6.113.103)
kārtikyāṁ paradārotthaiḥ sa vimucyeta pātakaiḥ eṣāṁ yugatraye śuddhirāsīttatra dvijanmanām
...on the Kartika full moon, he is freed even from sins arising from adultery. Through three ages, this remained the manner of purification for the twice-born there.
Verse 104 (skanda.6.113.104)
kulaśīlavihīnānāmanyeṣāmapi pāpmanām matvā kaliyugaṁ ghoraṁ paradārasuraṁjitam tatra śuddhistataḥ sarvaiḥ kṛtā vipraiśca vācikā
But knowing the Kali age to be terrible and deeply given to adultery, the purification there — for those lacking lineage and character, and for other sinners as well — has since been performed by all the brahmins through mere verbal declaration.
Verse 105 (skanda.6.113.105)
purato devadevasya brahmaṇo dvijasattamāḥ pitṛmātṛjavaṁśasya viśuddhyarthamataṁdritaiḥ
O best of brahmins, this is done tirelessly before Brahma, the god of gods, for the purification of one's lineage born of father and mother.
Verse 106 (skanda.6.113.106)
O best of brahmins, even today, whoever bathes there — if he is of mixed lineage, he is, without doubt, burned there by Fire.
