Suta said: Satyasandha too, seeing his daughter happy and united with her desired husband, became joyful in spirit and felt his purpose fulfilled.
Verse 2 (skanda.6.128.2)
tatastasyaiva liṁgasya dakṣiṇāṁ mūrtimāśritaḥ dṛḍhaṁ padmāsanaṁ kṛtvā samyagdhyānaparāyaṇaḥ
Then, taking refuge in the southern form of that very linga, seated firmly in the lotus posture, wholly intent on meditation,
Verse 3 (skanda.6.128.3)
ātmānamātmanaivātha brahmadvāreṇa saṁsthitaḥ tato niḥsārayāmāsa pulakena samanvitaḥ
establishing himself by himself through the path of the crown of the head, thereupon, his body thrilling with rapture, he expelled his own life-breath.
Verse 4 (skanda.6.128.4)

Then those brahmins born in Chamatkarapura, arriving there for the sight of the deity, seeing that mortal frame,
Verse 5 (skanda.6.128.5)
apriyaṁ tejasā hīnaṁ mṛtamaspṛśyatāṁ gatam liṁgasya nātidūrasthaṁ dāhyārthaṁ yatnamāsthitāḥ
which had become displeasing, devoid of radiance, dead, and untouchable, resolved diligently to cremate it, not far from the linga.
Verse 6 (skanda.6.128.6)
yāvadgurvīṁ citāṁ kṛtvā tamanveṣṭuṁ samudyatāḥ tāvannaṣṭaṁ śavaṁ tacca jñāyate naiva kutracit
But by the time they had built a great funeral pyre and set about searching for it, that body had vanished — nowhere could it be found.
Verse 7 (skanda.6.128.7)

tatastasyotthaliṁgasya sarvaṁ pūjādikaṁ ca yat sarve nirūpayāmāsuḥ saptaviṁśatimadhyataḥ
Thereafter, they all established every rite of worship for that self-arisen linga among the group of twenty-seven lingas.

yatrasthaḥ sa mahīpālaḥ satyasaṁdhastaponvitaḥ śokodvignāstataḥ prāhustaṁ bhūpaṁ rahasi sthitam
went to that King Satyasandha, who remained there absorbed in austerity; then, distraught with grief, they spoke to that king, seated in solitude.
Verse 13 (skanda.6.128.13)

The king said: "O excellent brahmins, I am a renunciate; I am not able to rule a kingdom, nor can I in any way arrange for sons or wives."
Verse 18 (skanda.6.128.18)

Verse 25 (skanda.6.128.25)

"By mere bathing of the couple alone, an excellent son is born here; therefore this pool is called by the name 'Suputrada' (giver of good sons)."

"There is nothing untrue in this, nor is it in any way a cause for reproach, for a verse spoken by the ancient teachers is heard concerning this —"
Verse 32 (skanda.6.128.32)
adbhyo'gnirbrahmataḥ kṣattramaśmano lohamucchritam teṣāṁ sarvatragaṁ tejaḥ svāsu yoniṣu śāmyati
"From water arises fire, from Brahma arises the Kshatriya, from stone arises iron uplifted; their radiance, though it pervades everywhere, comes to rest again in its own original source."
Verse 33 (skanda.6.128.33)
tacchrutvā janāḥ sarve sacivānāṁ vacokhilam tadācakhyurdrutaṁ gatvā satyasaṁdhasya bhūpateḥ
Hearing this, all the people, having heard this entire word of the ministers, went quickly and reported all this to King Satyasandha.
Verse 34 (skanda.6.128.34)
tatastāḥ sarvaśo dārā brāhmaṇānatisundarān ṛtusnātāḥ samājagmurnṛpapatnyaḥ suharṣitāḥ
Thereafter all those queens, greatly rejoicing, having bathed after their season, went to those most handsome brahmins.
Verse 35 (skanda.6.128.35)
yatra tatputradaṁ tīrthaṁ vasiṣṭhena vinirmitam tatra snātvā sakṛtsaṁgaṁ samāsādya dvijodbhavam
There, at that son-granting tirtha built by Vasishtha, having bathed and obtained a single union with those brahmins,
Verse 36 (skanda.6.128.36)
sarvāstāḥ putravatyaśca saṁjātā dvijasattamāḥ āsīttasya nareṁdrasya śataṁ paṁcabhiranvitam
all of them, O excellent brahmins, became mothers of sons; that king had one hundred and five wives in total.
Verse 37 (skanda.6.128.37)
tāsāṁ samabhavadviprāḥ śataṁ paṁcādhikaṁ tathā
From all of them, in the same way, one hundred and five excellent sons were born,
Verse 38 (skanda.6.128.38)
pratyekaṁ varaputrāṇāṁ vaṁśavṛddhikaraṁ param ānaṁdajananaṁ samyaksarveṣāṁ rāṣṭravāsinām
each of those excellent sons, causing the supreme increase of the lineage, and truly bringing joy to all the dwellers of the realm.
Verse 39 (skanda.6.128.39)
tatra śreṣṭho'bhavatputro ya ānartapatirbhuvi aṭonāma suvikhyātaḥ sarvaśatrunibarhaṇaḥ
Among them, the son who became the very best, and became the lord of Anarta, became renowned on earth by the name 'Ata', a destroyer of all enemies.
Verse 40 (skanda.6.128.40)
aṭeśvaraiti khyāto yena devo'tra nirmitaḥ subhaktyā yena dṛṣṭena vaṁśocchittirna jāyate
He became renowned by the name 'Ateshvara', by whom this deity was established here — one who, seen with true devotion, ensures that the lineage never comes to an end.
Verse 41 (skanda.6.128.41)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kasmāttasya kṛtaṁ nāma etaccā'ṭa iti smṛtam anvayena parityaktaṁ tasmātkīrtaya sūtaja
The sages said: For what reason was he given this name 'Ata', which appears unconnected to any lineage-name? O son of Suta, tell us this.
Verse 42 (skanda.6.128.42)
sacivairbrāhmaṇairvāpi tasyaitannāma nirmitam mātrā vā tatsamācakṣva paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi naḥ
"Was this name given by the ministers or by the brahmins, or by his mother? Tell us this — we have the greatest curiosity about it."
Verse 43 (skanda.6.128.43)
sūta uvāca na mātrā tatkṛtaṁ nāma na vipraiḥ sacivairnṛpa tatkṛtaṁ devadūtena vyomasthena dvijottamāḥ
Suta said: O king, that name was given neither by his mother nor by the brahmins or ministers; O excellent brahmins, that name was given by a divine messenger stationed in the sky.
Verse 44 (skanda.6.128.44)
yathā tathā pravakṣyāmi śrotavyaṁ susamāhitaiḥ yayā sa bhūpatirjāto daśārṇādhipateḥ sutā
I shall relate it just as it happened; listen with a focused mind — she from whom that king was born was the daughter of the lord of Dasharna.
Verse 45 (skanda.6.128.45)
sā rūpayauvanopetā rūpāḍhyaṁ prāpya saddvijam prasthitā snātukāmātha putratīrthe mṛgekṣaṇā
She, endowed with beauty and youth, doe-eyed, having obtained a most handsome excellent brahmin, set out, desiring to bathe at the son-granting tirtha.
Verse 46 (skanda.6.128.46)
sahitā tena vipreṇa kaṁdarpapratimena ca atha tābhyāṁ mahānrāmo mithaḥ saṁdarśanātsthitaḥ
As she journeyed together with that brahmin, resembling the god of love, the two of them, beholding one another, became utterly enchanted with each other.
Verse 47 (skanda.6.128.47)
tādṛṅmātraṁ sukṛcchreṇa prāptaṁ tīrthaṁ sutapradam tataḥ snātvā jale tasminniṣkrāṁtau tau sukāmukau
With great difficulty they reached that son-granting tirtha; then, having bathed in that water, those two lovers emerged.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.128.48)
vrajamānau ca mārge'pi kāmadharmamupāgatau atyautsukyātsusaṁhṛṣṭau lajjāṁ tyaktvā sudūrataḥ
Even while walking along the path, they were overcome by the impulse of desire, filled with great eagerness and delight, casting shame far aside,
Verse 49 (skanda.6.128.49)
niṁdamānasya lokasya vicchedavacanaistadā vīryotsarge'tha saṁjāte yāvaduttiṣṭhate dvijaḥ
even amid the people's censuring words of reproach; then, as the discharge of seed occurred, and just as that brahmin was rising,
Verse 50 (skanda.6.128.50)
tāvadākāśagā vāṇī sahasā devanirmitā aṭatārājamārgeṇa vipreṇānena vai yataḥ
at that very moment a voice suddenly arose from the sky, fashioned by the gods, saying that this brahmin, wandering (aṭan) right upon the royal road,
Verse 51 (skanda.6.128.51)
utpāditastu putro'yamautsukyādbrāhmaṇena tu aṭākhyo bhūpatistasmālloke khyāto bhaviṣyati
"has, out of eagerness, begotten this son; therefore he shall become renowned in the world as the king named 'Ata'."
Verse 52 (skanda.6.128.52)
dīrghāyurbahuputraśca śatruṁpakṣakṣayāvahaḥ etasmātkāraṇādviprā aṭākhyaḥ sa babhūva ha
"He shall be long-lived, possessed of many sons, and a destroyer of the enemy's side — for this very reason, O brahmins, he became renowned by the name 'Ata'."
Verse 53 (skanda.6.128.53)
svavaṁśoddharacaṁdro'tra vāṁchitārthaprado'rthinām tenaitatkṣetramāsādya sthāpitaṁ liṁgamuttamam svanāmnā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ sarvadeṣṭapradaṁ nṛṇām
Like a moon that redeems his own lineage, granting to petitioners whatever they desire, he it was who, coming to this field, established this excellent linga under his own name, which ever grants people all they desire, O excellent brahmins.
Verse 54 (skanda.6.128.54)
yastanmāghacaturdaśyāṁ pūjayecchraddhayānvitaḥ na tasya jāyate kiṁcidduḥkhaṁ saṁtānasaṁbhavam
Whoever worships him with devotion on the fourteenth day of the month of Magha never experiences any distress connected with progeny.
Verse 55 (skanda.6.128.55)
api varṣaśatānārī snātvā kuṇḍe sutaprade aṭeśvaraṁ tataḥ paśyecchivabhaktiparāyaṇā
Even a woman a hundred years old, if she bathes in that son-granting pool and, devoted to Shiva-worship, then beholds Ateshvara,
Verse 56 (skanda.6.128.56)
sadyaḥ putramavāpnoti vaṁśavṛddhikaraṁ param tatprasādānna saṁdehaḥ kārtikeya vaco yathā
she instantly obtains a son who becomes the supreme means of increasing her lineage — by his grace, there is no doubt of this, as is the very word of Kartikeya.
