Verse 1 (skanda.6.141.1)

sūtauvāca tathānyo'pi hi tatrāsti devo miṣṭānnadāyakaḥ yasya saṁdarśanādeva miṣṭānnaṁ labhate naraḥ

Suta said: There too is another deity, the giver of sweet food, by whose mere sight a man obtains sweet food.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.141.2)

āsītpūrvaṁ nṛpo nāmnā vasusena iti smṛtaḥ ānarttādhipatiḥ khyāto bṛhatkalpe dvijottamāḥ

O best of brahmins, long ago there was a king known by the name Vasusena, famed as the lord of the Anarta country in the Brihat Kalpa.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.141.3)

atyaiśvaryasamāyukto gajavājirathānvitaḥ jitāripakṣastejasvī dātā bhogī jiteṁdriyaḥ

He was endowed with immense wealth, possessed of elephants, horses and chariots; he had conquered his enemies, was radiant, generous, given to enjoyment, and had mastered his senses.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.141.4)

sa saṁkrāṁtau vyatīpāte grahaṇe ravi somayoḥ parvakāleṣu cānyeṣu vividheṣu subhaktitaḥ

On the occasions of the solstice, the vyatipata, the eclipses of the sun and moon, and on various other sacred occasions, he would give gifts with great devotion.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.141.5)

prayacchati dvijātibhyo ratnāni vividhāni ca iṁdranīlamahānīlavidrumasphaṭikādi ca

He would give to brahmins various kinds of jewels — sapphire, dark sapphire, coral, crystal, and the like.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.141.6)

māṇikyamauktikānyeva vidrumāṇi viśeṣataḥ hastyaśvarathayānāni vastrāṇi vividhāni ca

Rubies, pearls, and corals in particular, as well as elephants, horses, chariots, other vehicles, and various kinds of garments.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.141.7)

na kasyacitpradadyātsa sasyaṁ brāhmaṇasattamāḥ atīva sulabhaṁ matvā tathā toyaṁ viśeṣataḥ

O best of brahmins, but he never gave grain to anyone, and, considering water too to be extremely commonplace, he never gave that either.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.141.8)

tato rājyaṁ ciraṁ kṛtvā dṛṣṭvā putrodbhavānsutān kāladharmamanuprāptaḥ kasmiṁścitkālaparyaye

Then, after ruling the kingdom for a long time and seeing the grandsons born of his sons, at a certain point in time he met the way of death.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.141.9)

tataśca maṁtribhistasya satyasena iti smṛtaḥ abhiṣiktaḥ suto rājye vīryodāryasamanvitaḥ

Thereafter, his son known as Satyasena, endowed with valor and generosity, was anointed to the kingdom by the ministers.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.141.10)

vasuseno'pi saṁprāpya svargaṁ dānaprabhāvataḥ divyāṁbaradharo bhūtvā divyaratnairvibhūṣitaḥ

Vasusena too, having attained heaven by the power of his gifts, became clothed in celestial garments and adorned with divine jewels.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.141.11)

sevyamāno'psarobhiśca vimānavaramāśritaḥ babhrāma sarvalokeṣu svecchayā kṣutsamāvṛtaḥ

Attended by apsaras and seated upon an excellent celestial chariot, he wandered through all the worlds at will — yet he remained beset by hunger.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.141.12)

pipāsākulacittaśca mukhena pariśuṣyatā na kaṁciddadṛśe tatra bhuṁjānamaparaṁ divi

His mind was agitated by thirst, his mouth growing parched, yet nowhere in that heaven did he see anyone else eating.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.141.13)

na ca pānasamāsaktaṁ na sasyaṁ salilaṁ na ca

Nor did he see anyone engaged in drinking, nor with any grain, nor with any water.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.141.14)

tato gatvā sahasrākṣamuvāca dvijasattamāḥ kṣuttṛṣāvṛtadehastu lajjayā'dhomukhaḥ sthitaḥ

O best of brahmins, then, his body overcome by hunger and thirst, he went to Sahasraksha (Indra) and, standing with head bowed in shame, spoke.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.141.15)

naivātra dṛśyate kaścitkṣuttṛṣāparipīḍitaḥ māṁ muktvā vibudhaśreṣṭha tatkimetadvadasvame

O best of the gods, here I see no one afflicted by hunger and thirst except me — tell me, then, what this is.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.141.16)

eṣa me svargarūpeṇa narakaḥ samupasthitaḥ kimetairbhūṣaṇairvastrairvimānādibhireva ca

This heaven has come to me in the very form of hell. What use are these ornaments, garments, and celestial vehicles to me?

Verse 17 (skanda.6.141.17)

kṣudhā saṁpīḍyamānasya svargametacchacīpate agnitulyaṁ samuddiṣṭaṁ mama citte'pi vartate

O Lord of Shachi, to one tormented by hunger, this heaven feels like fire — this alone remains fixed in my mind.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.141.18)

tasmātkuru prasādaṁ me yathā kṣunna prabādhate nocetkṣipa suraśreṣṭha raurave narake drutam

Therefore show me grace, so that hunger may not torment me — otherwise, O best of gods, cast me swiftly into the Raurava hell.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.141.19)

iṁdrauvāca anarhosi mahīpāla narakasya tvameva hi tvayā dānāni dattāni saṁkhyāhīnāni sarvadā

Indra said: O king, you are utterly unfit for hell, for you have always given countless gifts.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.141.20)

paraṁ kiṁ tu kvacinnānnaṁ dattaṁ rājanna codakam na kiṁcidapi saṁciṁtya yataḥ sulabhameva hi

But, O king, you never gave grain, nor water, for, thinking them utterly commonplace, you gave them no thought at all.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.141.21)

toyaṁ sānnaṁ sadā dadyādannaṁ caiva sadakṣiṇam ya icchecchāśvatīṁ tṛptimiha loke paratra ca

One who desires eternal satisfaction in this world and the next should always give water together with food, and food together with a gift of dakshina.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.141.22)

tasmāttvaṁ hi kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ svarge caiva mahīpate bhūṣito bhūṣaṇaiḥ śreṣṭhairvimānavaramāśritaḥ

That is why, O king, even in heaven, adorned with excellent ornaments and seated on a fine celestial vehicle, you remain overcome by hunger.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.141.23)

rājovāca asti kaścidupāyo'tra devau vā mānuṣo'pi vā kṣutpipāse'titīvre me vināśaṁ yena gacchataḥ

The king said: Is there any means, whether divine or human, by which this extremely intense hunger and thirst of mine may be destroyed?

Verse 24 (skanda.6.141.24)

indra uvāca yadi kaścitsutastubhyaṁ viprebhyaḥ satataṁ jalam dadāti ca sadā sasyaṁ tatte tṛptiḥ prajāyate

Indra said: If any son of yours were to give water and grain continually to brahmins, satisfaction would arise in you from that.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.141.25)

nānyathā pārthivaśreṣṭha ekasminnapi vāsare adattasya tava prāptiḥ satyametanmayoditam

Otherwise, O best of kings, not even for a single day will you obtain what you never gave — this I have spoken truly.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.141.26)

so'pi bhūmipateḥ putrastava yacchati nodakam na ca sasyaṁ dvijātibhyastvanmārgamanusaṁcaran

And that son of yours, the king, also following your own path, gives neither water nor grain to brahmins.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.141.27)

etasminnaṁtare prāpto nārado munisattamaḥ brahmalokātsthitau yatra tau bhūmipasureśvarau

Meanwhile, to the place where the king and Indra both stood, the great sage Narada arrived from Brahmaloka.

Verse 28 (skanda.6.141.28)

tataḥ śakraḥ samutthāya tasmai tuṣṭisamanvitaḥ arghaṁ dattvā vidhānena sādaraṁ cedamabravīt

Then Indra, rising with delight, offered him arghya according to rite and respectfully spoke thus.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.141.29)

kutaḥ prāpto'si vipreṁdra prasthitaḥ kva ca sāṁpratam kena kāryeṇa cedguhyaṁ na te'sti vada sāṁpratam

O lord of brahmins, from where have you come, and where are you bound for now? For what purpose — if it is not a secret, tell me now.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.141.30)

nārada uvāca brahmalokādahaṁ prāptaḥ prasthitastu dharātale tīrthayātrākṛte śakra nānyadastīha kāraṇam

Narada said: O Shakra, I have come from Brahmaloka and am now setting out for the earth — for the sake of pilgrimage; there is no other reason.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.141.31)

sūta uvāca tacchrutvā sa nṛpo hṛṣṭastamuvāca munīśvaram prasādaḥ kriyatāṁ mahyaṁ dīnasya munipuṁgava

Suta said: Hearing this, the king, delighted, said to that lord of sages: O foremost of sages, show grace to me, a wretched one.

Verse 32 (skanda.6.141.32)

tvayā bhūmitale vācyo mama putro mahīpatiḥ ānarttādhipatiḥ khyātaḥ satyasena iti prabho

O lord, you must speak on earth to my son, the king famed as Satyasena, lord of the Anarta country.

Verse 33 (skanda.6.141.33)

tava tāto mayā dṛṣṭaḥ śakrasya sadanaṁ prati kṣutpipāsāparītāṁgo dīnātmā devamadhyagaḥ

(Tell him:) I myself saw your father, his body overcome with hunger and thirst, wretched in spirit, amid the gods at Indra's abode.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.141.34)

tasmātputro'si cenmahyaṁ tvaṁ satyaṁ parirakṣasi tanmannāmnā prayacchoccaiḥ sasyāni salilāni ca

(The king said further:) Therefore, if you are truly my son and uphold truth, then in my name give grain and water abundantly.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.141.35)

sa tatheti pratijñāya nārado munisattamaḥ anujñāpya sahasrākṣaṁ prasthito bhūtalaṁ prati

Saying "so be it," the great sage Narada, having made this promise and taken leave of Indra, set out for the earth.

Verse 36 (skanda.6.141.36)

tataḥ krameṇa tīrthāni bhramamāṇaḥ sa saddvijaḥ ānarttaviṣayaṁ prāpya satyasenamupādravat

Then that virtuous brahmin, wandering through the sacred sites in due course, reached the land of Anarta and approached Satyasena.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.141.37)

atha saṁpūjitastena samyagbhūpatinā muniḥ pituḥ saṁdeśamācakhyau vijane tasya sādaram

Duly honored by that king, the sage, in a secluded place, respectfully conveyed to him his father's message.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.141.38)

tacchrutvā śokasaṁtaptaḥ satyaseno mahīpatiḥ taṁ visṛjya muniśreṣṭhaṁ pūjayitvā vidhānataḥ

Hearing this, King Satyasena, tormented with grief, worshipped that foremost of sages according to rite and bade him farewell.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.141.39)

tato janakamuddiśya miṣṭānnena subhaktitaḥ sahasraṁ brāhmaṇeṁdrāṇāṁ bhojayāmāsa nityaśaḥ

Thereafter, dedicating it to his father, he began, with great devotion, to feed a thousand eminent brahmins sweet food every single day.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.141.40)

prapādānaṁ tathā cakre grīṣmakāle viśeṣataḥ tyaktvānyāḥ sakalā yāśca kriyā dharmasamudbhavāḥ

He also, especially in the summer season, established water-sheds for travellers, abandoning all other rites born of dharma.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.141.41)

evaṁ tasya mahīpasya vartamānasya ca dvijāḥ anāvṛṣṭirabhūdraudrā sarvasasyakṣayāvahā

O brahmins, thus, while that king was engaged in this practice, a terrible drought occurred, one that destroyed all the grain.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.141.42)

yāvaddvādaśavarṣāṇi na jalaṁ tridaśādhipaḥ mumoca dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe sarve lokāḥ kṣudhārditāḥ

For twelve years the lord of the gods withheld rain from the surface of the earth, so that all beings were afflicted with hunger.

Verse 43 (skanda.6.141.43)

atrābhāvāttato bhūyo na sasyaṁ saṁprayacchati brāhmaṇebhyaḥ samuddiśya pitaraṁ svaṁ yathā purā

Because of that lack, he could no longer give grain to brahmins dedicated to his father as before.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.141.44)

tataḥ sa kṣutparītāṁgaḥ pitā tasya mahīpateḥ svapne provāca taṁ putramatīva malināṁbaraḥ

Then that king's father, his body overcome with hunger and clad in exceedingly soiled garments, spoke to his son in a dream.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.141.45)

tvayā putreṇa putrāhaṁ kṣutpipāsāsamākulaḥ svargastho'pi hi tiṣṭhāmi tasmādannaṁ prayaccha vai mannāmnā toyasaṁyuktaṁ yadi tvaṁ matsamudbhavaḥ

(He said:) O son, because of you I remain tormented by hunger and thirst even while dwelling in heaven; therefore, if you are truly born of me, give grain together with water in my name.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.141.46)

tataḥ śokasamāyuktaḥ sa nṛpaḥ svapnadarśanāt annābhāvātsamaṁ maṁtraṁ maṁtribhiḥ sa tadākarot

Grieved by this dream, the king then took counsel together with his ministers about the lack of grain.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.141.47)

ahamārādhayiṣyāmi sasyārthe vṛṣabhadhvajam rājye rakṣā vidhātavyā bhavadbhiḥ sādaraṁ sadā

(The king said:) I shall worship Vrishabhadhvaja (Shiva) for the sake of grain; meanwhile you must always diligently protect the kingdom.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.141.48)

tato'traiva samāgatya sthāpayitvā maheśvaram samyagārādhayāmāsa vrataiśca niyamaistathā

Then, coming to that very place and installing Maheshvara there, he worshipped him properly with vows and observances.

Verse 49 (skanda.6.141.49)

atha tasya gatastuṣṭiṁ varṣāṁte bhagavāñchivaḥ abravīdvarado'smīti prārthayasva yathepsitam

Then at the end of a year, Lord Shiva, pleased with him, said: I am ready to grant a boon — ask for whatever you desire.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.141.50)

rājovāca annārthaṁ devadeveśa mayāyaṁ vihito vidhiḥ tasmāttvaṁ yaccha me śīghramasaṁkhyaṁ vṛṣavāhana

The king said: O lord of gods, it is for the sake of grain that I have performed this rite; therefore, O bull-bannered one, grant me quickly grain in abundance.

Verse 51 (skanda.6.141.51)

tathā saṁjāyatā vṛṣṭiḥ samaste dharaṇītale yena sasyāni jāyaṁte salilāni ca sāṁpratam

And let such rain fall upon the entire surface of the earth, by which grain and water may now be produced.

Verse 52 (skanda.6.141.52)

jāyatāṁ mama tātasya svargasthasya mahātmanaḥ prasādāttava saṁtṛptirakṣayā surasattama

O best of gods, by your grace, let my noble father who dwells in heaven attain everlasting satisfaction.

Verse 53 (skanda.6.141.53)

śrībhagavānuvāca bhavitā na cirādvṛṣṭiḥ prabhūtā dharaṇītale bhaviṣyaṁti tathānnāni yāni kāni mahītale

The Blessed Lord said: Very soon there will be abundant rain upon the earth, and all manner of grains, whatsoever they be, will grow upon it.

Verse 54 (skanda.6.141.54)

tasmāttvaṁ gaccha rājeṁdra svagṛhaṁ prati sāṁpratam mama vākyādasaṁdigdhametadeva bhaviṣyati

Therefore, O foremost of kings, go now to your own home; by my word this will certainly, without doubt, come to pass.

Verse 55 (skanda.6.141.55)

taccaitanmāmakaṁ liṁgaṁ yattvayā sthāpitaṁ nṛpa prātarutthāya yaḥ kaścitsamyaktadvīkṣayiṣyati

O king, this very linga of mine that you have installed — whoever rises at dawn and beholds it properly —

Verse 56 (skanda.6.141.56)

miṣṭānnamamṛtasvādu sa hi nūnamavāpsyati mama vākyānnṛpaśreṣṭha sadā janmanijanmani

O best of kings, he will surely obtain, birth after birth, sweet food tasting like ambrosia, by my word.

Verse 57 (skanda.6.141.57)

sa evaṁ bhagavānuktvā tataścādarśanaṁ gataḥ so'pi rājā nijaṁ sthānaṁ harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ ājagāma cakārātha rājyaṁ nihatakaṁṭakam

Having said this, the Lord vanished from sight. The king too, filled with great joy, returned to his own place and thereafter ruled his kingdom free of all thorns.

Verse 58 (skanda.6.141.58)

sūta uvāca adyāpi kalikāle'tra saṁprāpte dāruṇe yuge yastaṁ miṣṭānnadaṁ paśyetprātarutthāya bhaktitaḥ

Suta said: Even today, though this terrible Kali age has come, whoever rises at dawn and beholds that Mishtannada, the giver of sweet food, with devotion —

Verse 59 (skanda.6.141.59)

sa miṣṭānnamavāpnoti yadi kāmayate dvijāḥ niṣkāmo vā samabhyeti sthānaṁ devasya śūlinaḥ

O brahmins, if he desires it, he obtains sweet food; and if he is free of desire, he attains the abode of the trident-bearing god.
