Nagara Khanda · Chapter 143
The Curse of Jabali
Verse 1 (skanda.6.143.1)
sūta uvāca tathānyo'pi ca tatrāsti devaścitreśvaro dvijāḥ citrapīṭhasya madhyasthaścitrasaukhyaprado nṛṇām
Suta said: O brahmins, there too is another deity, Chitreshvara, who stands in the middle of Chitrapitha and grants wondrous happiness to men.
Verse 2 (skanda.6.143.2)
yaṁ dṛṣṭvā pūjayitvā ca snāpayitvāthavā naraḥ mucyate paradārotthaiḥ pātakaiścopapātakaiḥ
Whoever beholds him, worships him, or bathes him is freed from the great sins arising from adultery, and from the lesser sins as well.
Verse 3 (skanda.6.143.3)
dharṣayitvā guroḥ patnīṁ kanyāṁ vā nijavaṁśajām nīcāṁ vā vratayuktāṁ vā kāmāsaktena cetasā
Even one who has violated, with a mind given over to lust, the wife of his guru, or a maiden born in his own family, or a low-born woman, or one under a vow —
Verse 4 (skanda.6.143.4)
whoever worships him on the fourteenth of the bright half of Chaitra swiftly destroys that sin and thereafter goes to the world of heaven.
Verse 5 (skanda.6.143.5)
tathā citrāṁgadastatra jābālisahito nṛpaḥ kumāryā sahitaḥ sārddhaṁ nagnayā tatsamutthayā santiṣṭhate tadagre tu śapto jābālinā purā
And there king Chitrangada stands, together with Jabali, and with that same naked maiden risen from him, standing before him — having been cursed long ago by Jabali.
Verse 6 (skanda.6.143.6)
trayāṇāmapi yasteṣāṁ tasminnahani nirvapet sa iṣṭāṁ labhate nārīṁ siddhiṁ ca manasi sthitām
Whoever, on that day, offers oblation for even one of these three obtains the woman he desires, and the accomplishment fixed in his mind.
Verse 7 (skanda.6.143.7)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kasmājjābālinā śaptaḥ pūrvaṁ citrāṁgado yuvā sā ca tattanayā kasmātkumārī vastravarjitā
The sages said: Why was young Chitrangada formerly cursed by Jabali? And why is that daughter of his a maiden bereft of clothing?
Verse 8 (skanda.6.143.8)
adyāpi tiṣṭhate tatra viruddhaṁ rūpamāśritā janahāsya karaṁ nityaṁ tasmātsūta vadasva naḥ
Even today she remains there in that contrary form, forever the object of people's ridicule; therefore, O Suta, tell us.
Verse 9 (skanda.6.143.9)
sūta uvāca ārsotpūrvaṁ munirnāmnā jābāliriti viśrutaḥ kaumārabrahmacaryeṇa yena cīrṇaṁ tapaḥ sadā
Suta said: In former times there was a renowned sage named Jabali, by whom austerity was ever practiced through celibacy maintained from boyhood.
Verse 10 (skanda.6.143.10)
hāṭakeśvarajaṁ kṣetraṁ samāsādya sa saddvijāḥ bālye'pi vayasi prāpte samārebhe mahattapaḥ
O good brahmins, having reached the sacred field born of Hataka, even in his boyhood he began a great austerity.
Verse 11 (skanda.6.143.11)
kṛcchracāṁdrāyaṇādīni pārākāṇi śanaiḥśanaiḥ kurvatā tena te devāḥ saṁnītā bhayagocaram
Gradually performing harsh Chandrayana and other extreme vows one after another, he brought the gods into a state of fear.
Verse 12 (skanda.6.143.12)
tataḥ śakrādayo devāḥ saṁtrastā merumūrdhani militvā cakrire maṁtraṁ tasya vighnakṛte mithaḥ
Then Shakra and the other gods, terrified, gathered together on the peak of Mount Meru and took counsel among themselves to obstruct him.
Verse 13 (skanda.6.143.13)
yadyasya tapaso vṛddhirevaṁ yāsyati nityaśaḥ cyāvayiṣyati tannūnaṁ svargarājyācchatakratum
If the growth of his austerity continues thus forever, it will surely dislodge Shatakratu (Indra) from the kingdom of heaven.
Verse 14 (skanda.6.143.14)
tasmādgacchatu raṁbhākhyā tatpārśve 'psarasāṁ varā brahmacaryavighātāya tasyarṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ
Therefore let Rambha, foremost of apsaras, go to his side, so that the celibacy of that sage of firm resolve may be broken.
Verse 15 (skanda.6.143.15)
brahmacaryaṁ tapomūlaṁ yataḥ saṁkīrtitaṁ dvijaiḥ tasyābhāvātparikleśaḥ kevalaṁ na phalaṁ vrate
For celibacy is declared by the twice-born to be the very root of austerity; in its absence there is only affliction, and the vow bears no fruit at all.
Verse 16 (skanda.6.143.16)
evaṁ te niścayaṁ kṛtvā samāhūya tataḥ param raṁbhāmūcurmaheṁdreṇa sarve devāstadādarāt
Having thus resolved, then summoning her, all the gods together with the great Indra respectfully spoke to Rambha.
Verse 17 (skanda.6.143.17)
gaccha śīghraṁ mahābhāge jābāliryatra tiṣṭhati hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre tapovighnāya tasya vai
O blessed one, go quickly to that Hatakeshvara field, where Jabali dwells, to obstruct his austerity.
Verse 18 (skanda.6.143.18)
te te bhāvāḥ prayoktavyāḥ kathāstāstā manoharāḥ vardhayaṁtī tathā citte tasya kāmaṁ nirargalam
Those various charming feelings and stories are to be employed, so that desire may swell in his heart without restraint.
Verse 19 (skanda.6.143.19)
raṁbhovāca sa munirna vijānāti kāmadharmaṁ sureśvara arasajñaṁ kathaṁ deva kariṣyāmi smarānvitam
Rambha said: O lord of gods, that sage does not even know the ways of love; how shall I make one who knows nothing of that flavor full of desire?
Verse 20 (skanda.6.143.20)
indra uvāca eṣa yāsyati madvākyādvasaṁtastasya sannidhau asya saṁdarśanādeva bhaviṣyati sa sasmaraḥ
Indra said: At my word, Vasanta (Spring) will go to his side; by the mere sight of him, that sage will become full of desire.
Verse 21 (skanda.6.143.21)
tasmādgaccha drutaṁ tatra sahānena varānane saṁsiddhirjāyate yena devakṛtyaṁ bhaveddrutam
Therefore, O fair-faced one, go quickly there together with him, so that success may be attained and the task of the gods swiftly accomplished.
Verse 22 (skanda.6.143.22)
atha sā taṁ praṇamyoccaiḥ prasthitā dharaṇītalam vasaṁtena samāyuktā jābāliryatra tiṣṭhati
Then she, bowing to him with great reverence, set out for the earth together with Vasanta, to where Jabali dwelt.
Verse 23 (skanda.6.143.23)
athākasmādaśokasya saṁjātaḥ puṣpasaṁcayaḥ tilakasya ca cūtasya maṁjaryaḥ samupasthitāḥ
Then suddenly a mass of ashoka blossoms came forth, and the tender clusters of tilaka and mango trees appeared.
Verse 24 (skanda.6.143.24)
śiśire ca sarojāni vikāsaṁ prāpureva hi vavau ca surabhirvāyurdākṣiṇātyaḥ sukāmadaḥ
Even in the winter season the lotuses came into bloom, and a fragrant southern breeze began to blow, most delightful, kindling desire.
Verse 25 (skanda.6.143.25)
etasminnaṁtare prāptā raṁbhā tatra varāpsarāḥ salilāśayatīrastho jābāliryatra tiṣṭhati
Meanwhile, that excellent apsara Rambha arrived there, where Jabali was seated on the bank of a pool of water.
Verse 26 (skanda.6.143.26)
akṣamālādhṛtakaro japanmaṁtramanekadhā abhīṣṭaṁ śraddhayā yukto vidhāya pitṛtarpaṇam
Holding a rosary in his hand, muttering his mantra repeatedly, he was faithfully performing the desired offering of tarpana to his ancestors.
Verse 27 (skanda.6.143.27)
atha saṁpaśyatastasya muktvā vastraparigraham
Then, even as he was watching, that excellent apsara removed her garments,
Verse 28 (skanda.6.143.28)
snānārthaṁ tajjalaṁ sā'tha praviveśa varāpsarāḥ
and entered that very water to bathe.
Verse 29 (skanda.6.143.29)
vivastrāṁ tāṁ samālokya so'pi yauvanaśālinīm yāmyānilena ca spṛṣṭaḥ kāmasya vaśago 'bhavat
Beholding her, unclothed, in the full bloom of her youth, and touched too by that southern breeze, he came under the sway of desire.
Verse 30 (skanda.6.143.30)
tatastasyābhavatkaṁpastatkṣaṇādeva sanmune akṣamālā karāgrācca papāta dharaṇītale
Then, O good sage, that very instant a trembling arose in him, and the rosary slipped from his fingertips and fell to the ground.
Verse 31 (skanda.6.143.31)
pulakaḥ sarvagātreṣu saṁjajñe'tīva dāruṇaḥ aśrupātāḥ pataṁti sma koṣṇāḥ plāvitabhūtalāḥ
A most intense horripilation arose over his whole body, and warm tears began to fall, flooding the ground.
Verse 32 (skanda.6.143.32)
atha taṁ kṣubhitaṁ jñātvā cittajñā sā varāpsarāḥ nirgatya salilāttasmāccakre vastraparigraham
Then, knowing him agitated, and understanding his state of mind, that excellent apsara came out of the water and put on her garments.
Verse 33 (skanda.6.143.33)
tatastasyāṁtike gatvā praṇipatya kṛtādarā provāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ varddhaṁtī tasya tanmatam
Then, going near to him and bowing respectfully, she spoke a sweet speech, further stirring his desire.
Verse 34 (skanda.6.143.34)
āśrame sakalaṁ brahmankaccitte kuśalaṁ mune svādhyāye tapasi prājña śiṣyeṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu
(She said:) O brahmin, is all well in the hermitage? O wise sage, is all well in your study, your austerity, with your disciples, and with the deer and birds?
Verse 35 (skanda.6.143.35)
muniruvāca kuśalaṁ me varārohe sarvatraivādhunā sthitam viśeṣeṇātra saṁprāptā sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitā
The sage said: O lovely one, all is well with me everywhere just now — especially now that one endowed with every auspicious mark has arrived here.
Verse 36 (skanda.6.143.36)
kā tvaṁ vada mahābhāge mama manmathavardhanī kiṁ devī vāsurī vā kiṁ pannagī kiṁ tu mānuṣī
Tell me, O blessed one, who are you, who so increase my desire — are you a goddess, or a demon-woman, or a serpent-maiden, or indeed human?
Verse 37 (skanda.6.143.37)
nivedaya śarīre me kiṁ na paśyasi vepathum nirargalaśca romāṁco bāṣpapūraśca netrajaḥ
Tell me — do you not see this trembling in my body? This uncontrolled horripilation, and this flood of tears from my eyes?
Verse 38 (skanda.6.143.38)
Rambha said: Is this the natural state of your body, or has some other ailment arisen? I see no bodily well-being in you at all.
Verse 39 (skanda.6.143.39)
muniruvāca na me gātrasvabhāvo na vyādhibhiśca sulocane śṛṇuṣva kāraṇaṁ kṛtsnaṁ yenedṛksaṁsthitaṁ vapuḥ
The sage said: O fair-eyed one, this is neither my body's natural state nor born of any disease — hear the whole reason why my body has come to be like this.
Verse 40 (skanda.6.143.40)
yāvatī vartate velā tava darśanasaṁbhavā tāvatkālamidaṁ rūpaṁ mama gātrasamudbhavam
For as long as this sight of you has lasted, for that long has this state arisen in my body.
Verse 41 (skanda.6.143.41)
tadahaṁ manmathāviṣṭo darśanāttava śobhane brahmacaryaparopītthaṁ mahāvratadharo'pi ca
O beautiful one, that is why I have come under the sway of desire at the sight of you — even though I am thus devoted to celibacy and hold to a great vow.
Verse 42 (skanda.6.143.42)
raṁbhovāca yadyevaṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha māṁ bhajasva yathāsukham nātra kaścidbhaveddoṣaḥ paṇyanārī yato'smyaham
Rambha said: O best of brahmins, if it is so, then enjoy me as you please; there is no fault in this at all, since I am a woman available to all.
Verse 43 (skanda.6.143.43)
sādhāraṇā vayaṁ vipra yataḥ sṛṣṭāḥ svayaṁbhuvā sarveṣāmeva lokānāṁ viśeṣeṇa dvijanmanām
O brahmin, we have been created by the Self-born in common for all worlds, and especially for the twice-born.
Verse 44 (skanda.6.143.44)
ahaṁ cāpi samālokya tvāṁ mune manmathopamam hatā kāmaśaraistīkṣṇairna ca gaṁtuṁ samutsahe
O sage, I too, having beheld you, comparable to Kama himself, struck by the sharp arrows of desire, have no strength to go away.
Verse 45 (skanda.6.143.45)
mayā dṛṣṭāḥ surāḥ pūrvaṁ yakṣā vidyādharāstathā siddhāśca kiṁnarā nāgā guhyakāḥ kimu mānuṣāḥ
I have seen before the gods, the yakshas, and the vidyadharas, and the siddhas, kinnaras, nagas, and guhyakas too — not to speak of men.
Verse 46 (skanda.6.143.46)
nedṛgrūpaṁ vapusteṣāmekasyāpi vilokitam madhye brāhmaṇaśārdūla tasmādbhaktāṁ bhajasva mām
O tiger among brahmins, not one among them have I beheld with a form such as yours; therefore accept this devoted one who is yours.
Verse 47 (skanda.6.143.47)
yo nārīṁ kāmasaṁtaptāṁ svayaṁ prāptāṁ parityajet sa mūrkhaḥ pacyate ghore narake śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
He who abandons a woman burning with desire who has come to him of her own accord — that fool is cooked in a terrible hell for eternal years.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.143.48)
evamuktvā tayā so'tha pariṣvakto mahāmuniḥ anicchannapi vākyena hṛdayena ca saspṛhaḥ
Having said this, she then embraced that great sage; and he, though outwardly unwilling in speech, became inwardly desirous in his heart.
Verse 49 (skanda.6.143.49)
tato latāni kuṁje taṁ samānīya munīśvaram kāmaśāstroditairbhāvai rarāma kṛtrimairmunim
Then, bringing that lord of sages to a bower of creepers, she made love with the sage through feigned passions as described in the science of desire.
Verse 50 (skanda.6.143.50)
evaṁ tayā samaṁ tatra sthito yāvaddinakṣayam kāmadharmasamāsaktaḥ saṁtyaktāśeṣakarmakaḥ
Thus he remained there with her until the day's end, wholly absorbed in the ways of desire, having abandoned all his ritual duties.
Verse 51 (skanda.6.143.51)
tato niṣkāmatāṁ prāpto lajjayā parivāritaḥ visasarja ca tāṁ raṁbhāṁ śaucaṁ cakre tataḥ param
Thereafter, having become free of desire and overcome with shame, he released Rambha, and then performed his purification.
Verse 52 (skanda.6.143.52)
sāpi tena vinirmuktā kṛtakṛtyā vilāsinī prahṛṣṭā prayayau tatra yatra devāḥ savāsavāḥ
That playful apsara too, released by him, her task accomplished, went joyfully to where the gods together with Indra were.
