The Glory of Kelishvari

Verse 1 (skanda.6.150.1)

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ ॥ शुक्रस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा चित्ते कृत्वा दयां ततः ॥ हाटकेश्वरजं क्षेत्रं गत्वा सिद्धिप्रदायकम्

sūta uvāca śukrastasya vacaḥ śrutvā citte kṛtvā dayāṁ tataḥ hāṭakeśvarajaṁ kṣetraṁ gatvā siddhipradāyakam

Suta said: Shukra, hearing his words, and taking pity in his heart, then went to that Hatakeshvara field, the bestower of accomplishment.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.150.2)

चकार विधिवद्धोमं स्वमांसेन हुताशने ॥ मंत्रैराथर्वणै रौद्रैः कुण्डं कृत्वा त्रिकोणकम्

cakāra vidhivaddhomaṁ svamāṁsena hutāśane maṁtrairātharvaṇai raudraiḥ kuṇḍaṁ kṛtvā trikoṇakam

Making a triangular fire-pit, with fierce Atharvan mantras, he offered, according to rite, an oblation of his own flesh into the fire.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.150.3)

एवं संजुह्वतस्तस्य तेन वै विधिना तदा ॥ यथा रुद्रेण संतुष्टा देवी केलीश्वरी तदा

evaṁ saṁjuhvatastasya tena vai vidhinā tadā yathā rudreṇa saṁtuṣṭā devī kelīśvarī tadā

Thus, as he offered oblation by that very rite, the goddess Kelishvari became satisfied, just as she had been satisfied by Rudra before.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.150.4)

तं प्रोवाच समेत्याशु शुक्रं दैत्यपुरोहितम् ॥ मा त्वं भार्गवशार्दूल कुरु मांसपरिक्षयम्

taṁ provāca sametyāśu śukraṁ daityapurohitam mā tvaṁ bhārgavaśārdūla kuru māṁsaparikṣayam

She quickly came before that priest of the daityas, Shukra, and said: O tiger among the Bhargavas, do not waste your own flesh in this way.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.150.5)

भाविताऽहं त्रिनेत्रेण तत्किं ब्रूहि करोमि ते

bhāvitā'haṁ trinetreṇa tatkiṁ brūhi karomi te

I have already been brought forth by the three-eyed one; tell me, then, what shall I do for you?

Verse 6 (skanda.6.150.6)

॥ शुक्र उवाच ॥ ॥ यथा रुद्रस्य साहाय्यं त्वयात्र विहितं शुभे ॥ अंधकस्याऽपि कर्तव्यं तथैवैष वरो मम

śukra uvāca yathā rudrasya sāhāyyaṁ tvayātra vihitaṁ śubhe aṁdhakasyā'pi kartavyaṁ tathaivaiṣa varo mama

Shukra said: O auspicious one, just as you rendered aid here to Rudra, so must you render aid to Andhaka too — this is my boon.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.150.7)

ये केचिद्दानवा युद्धे भक्षिताश्च विनाशिताः ॥ अस्य सैन्यस्य ते सर्वे पुनर्जीवंतु सत्वरम्

ye keciddānavā yuddhe bhakṣitāśca vināśitāḥ asya sainyasya te sarve punarjīvaṁtu satvaram

Whatever danavas of this army have been devoured and destroyed in battle, let all of them swiftly come back to life.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.150.8)

॥ देव्युवाच ॥ ॥ जीवयिष्यामि तान्सर्वान्दानवान्निहतान्रणे ॥ नवसंभक्षितान्विप्र प्रविष्टान्योगिनीमुखे

devyuvāca jīvayiṣyāmi tānsarvāndānavānnihatānraṇe navasaṁbhakṣitānvipra praviṣṭānyoginīmukhe

The Goddess said: O brahmin, I shall bring back to life all those danavas slain in battle, freshly devoured, who have entered into the mouths of the yoginis.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.150.9)

एवमुक्त्वा ददौ तस्मै सा देवी हर्षितानना ॥ नाम्नाऽमृतवतीं विद्यां यया जीवंति ते मृताः

evamuktvā dadau tasmai sā devī harṣitānanā nāmnā'mṛtavatīṁ vidyāṁ yayā jīvaṁti te mṛtāḥ

Having said this, that goddess, her face beaming with joy, gave him a knowledge named Amritavati, by which the dead come back to life.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.150.10)

ततः शुक्रः प्रहृष्टात्मा गत्वांधकमुवाच ह ॥ सिद्धा केलीश्वरी देवी यथा शम्भोस्तथा मम

tataḥ śukraḥ prahṛṣṭātmā gatvāṁdhakamuvāca ha siddhā kelīśvarī devī yathā śambhostathā mama

Then Shukra, his heart filled with joy, went to Andhaka and said: Just as the goddess Kelishvari was made accomplished for Shambhu, so now has she been made accomplished for me as well.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.150.11)

तया दत्ता शुभा विद्या मम दैत्या मृताश्च ये ॥ तान्सर्वांस्तत्प्रभावेन योजयिष्यामि जीविते

tayā dattā śubhā vidyā mama daityā mṛtāśca ye tānsarvāṁstatprabhāvena yojayiṣyāmi jīvite

By the power of this auspicious knowledge given by her, I shall restore to life all those daityas of mine who have died.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.150.12)

त्वयाऽस्याः सततं भक्तिः कार्या दानव सत्तम ॥ अष्टम्यां च विशेषेण चतुर्दश्यां च सर्वदा

tvayā'syāḥ satataṁ bhaktiḥ kāryā dānava sattama aṣṭamyāṁ ca viśeṣeṇa caturdaśyāṁ ca sarvadā

O best of danavas, you must ever maintain devotion to her, especially always on the eighth and fourteenth days.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.150.13)

एषा सा परमा शक्तिर्यया व्याप्तमिदं जगत्॥ केवलं भक्तिसाध्या सा न दण्डेन कथंचन

eṣā sā paramā śaktiryayā vyāptamidaṁ jagat kevalaṁ bhaktisādhyā sā na daṇḍena kathaṁcana

This is that supreme power by whom this entire universe is pervaded; she is attainable only through devotion, never in any way by force.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.150.14)

एवमुक्तस्तु शुक्रेण स तदा दानवाधिपः ॥ तां देवीं पूजयामास भावभक्तिसमन्वितः

evamuktastu śukreṇa sa tadā dānavādhipaḥ tāṁ devīṁ pūjayāmāsa bhāvabhaktisamanvitaḥ

Thus addressed by Shukra, that lord of the danavas then, filled with heartfelt devotion, worshipped that goddess.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.150.15)

स्तुत्वा च विविधैः स्तोत्रैस्ततः प्रोवाच सादरम् ॥ तथान्या मातरः सर्वा यथाज्येष्ठं यथाक्रमम्

stutvā ca vividhaiḥ stotraistataḥ provāca sādaram tathānyā mātaraḥ sarvā yathājyeṣṭhaṁ yathākramam

Praising her with various hymns, and likewise all the other mother-goddesses too, each in order of seniority, he then spoke respectfully.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.150.16)

अज्ञानाद्यन्मया देवि कृतः कोपस्तवोपरि ॥ मर्षणीयस्तथा सोऽद्य दीनस्य प्रणतस्य च

ajñānādyanmayā devi kṛtaḥ kopastavopari marṣaṇīyastathā so'dya dīnasya praṇatasya ca

He said: O goddess, whatever anger I directed toward you out of ignorance, forgive it today, in this wretched and prostrate one.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.150.17)

॥ श्रीदेव्युवाच ॥ ॥ परितुष्टाऽस्मि ते वत्स प्रभावाद्भार्गवस्य च ॥ वरं वरय तस्मात्त्वं न वृथा दर्शनं मम

śrīdevyuvāca parituṣṭā'smi te vatsa prabhāvādbhārgavasya ca varaṁ varaya tasmāttvaṁ na vṛthā darśanaṁ mama

Shri Devi said: O child, by the power of Bhargava (Shukra), I am well pleased with you; therefore ask for a boon, for a vision of me is never in vain.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.150.18)

॥ अन्धक उवाच ॥ ॥ अनेनैव तु रूपेण ये त्वां ध्यायंति देहिनः ॥ पूजयंति च सद्भक्त्या संस्थाप्य प्रतिमां तव ॥ तेषां सिद्धिः प्रदातव्या त्वया हृदयवांछिता

andhaka uvāca anenaiva tu rūpeṇa ye tvāṁ dhyāyaṁti dehinaḥ pūjayaṁti ca sadbhaktyā saṁsthāpya pratimāṁ tava teṣāṁ siddhiḥ pradātavyā tvayā hṛdayavāṁchitā

Andhaka said: Whatever embodied beings meditate upon you in this very form, and, installing your image, worship you with true devotion — to them grant the accomplishment desired in their hearts.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.150.19)

देव्युवाच ॥ ॥ यो मामनेन रूपेण स्थापयिष्यति मानवः ॥ तस्य मोक्षं प्रदास्यामि पापस्यापि न संशयः

devyuvāca yo māmanena rūpeṇa sthāpayiṣyati mānavaḥ tasya mokṣaṁ pradāsyāmi pāpasyāpi na saṁśayaḥ

The Goddess said: Whatever man installs me in this very form — even if he be a sinner — I shall grant him liberation, without doubt.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.150.20)

योऽष्टम्यां च चतुर्दश्यां मम पूजां करिष्यति ॥ तस्मै स्वर्गं प्रदास्यामि पापस्यापि दनूत्तम

yo'ṣṭamyāṁ ca caturdaśyāṁ mama pūjāṁ kariṣyati tasmai svargaṁ pradāsyāmi pāpasyāpi danūttama

O foremost of the danus, whoever worships me on the eighth and fourteenth days, to him I shall grant heaven, even if he be a sinner.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.150.21)

केवलं दर्शनं यश्च ध्यानं वा मे करिष्यति ॥ तस्य राज्यं प्रदास्यामि भोगान्मानुषसंभवान्

kevalaṁ darśanaṁ yaśca dhyānaṁ vā me kariṣyati tasya rājyaṁ pradāsyāmi bhogānmānuṣasaṁbhavān

And whoever merely beholds me, or meditates upon me, to him I shall grant a kingdom and the enjoyments that come with human birth.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.150.22)

एवमुक्त्वाऽथ सा देवी ततश्चादर्शनं गता ॥ तैश्च मातृगणैः सार्धं पश्यतस्तस्य तत्क्षणात्

evamuktvā'tha sā devī tataścādarśanaṁ gatā taiśca mātṛgaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ paśyatastasya tatkṣaṇāt

Having said this, that goddess, together with all the mother-goddesses, vanished from sight that very instant, even as he watched.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.150.23)

शक्रोऽपि दानवान्सर्वांस्तया संसिद्धया ततः ॥ मृतान्संजीवयामास दैतेयान्नवभक्षितान्

śakro'pi dānavānsarvāṁstayā saṁsiddhayā tataḥ mṛtānsaṁjīvayāmāsa daiteyānnavabhakṣitān

Then, by that accomplished knowledge, he brought back to life all those dead danavas, the daityas freshly devoured.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.150.24)

तैः समेत्य स दैत्येन्द्रः प्रहृष्टेनांतरात्मना ॥ तां पुरीं प्राप्य शक्रस्य राज्यं चक्रे दिवानिशम्

taiḥ sametya sa daityendraḥ prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā tāṁ purīṁ prāpya śakrasya rājyaṁ cakre divāniśam

Reunited with them, that lord of the daityas, his heart filled with joy, having attained that city, ruled day and night over that kingdom which had been Shakra's.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.150.25)

तां देवीं ध्यायमानस्तु पूजयानो दिवानिशम् ॥ अष्टम्यां च चतुर्दश्यां विशेषेण महाबलः

tāṁ devīṁ dhyāyamānastu pūjayāno divāniśam aṣṭamyāṁ ca caturdaśyāṁ viśeṣeṇa mahābalaḥ

That mighty one, meditating upon that goddess and worshipping her day and night, remained devoted to her especially on the eighth and fourteenth days.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.150.26)

अथ तस्याः प्रभावं तं ज्ञात्वा व्याससमुद्भवः ॥ स्थानेऽत्र स्थापयामास संसिद्धिं प परां गतः

atha tasyāḥ prabhāvaṁ taṁ jñātvā vyāsasamudbhavaḥ sthāne'tra sthāpayāmāsa saṁsiddhiṁ pa parāṁ gataḥ

Then, learning of her power, the sage born of Vyasa installed her here in this place, and himself attained supreme accomplishment.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.150.27)

॥ सूत उवाच । ॥ एवं केलीश्वर देवी संजाता परमेश्वरी ॥ तस्मात्स्थाप्या च पूज्या च ध्येया चैव विशेषतः

sūta uvāca evaṁ kelīśvara devī saṁjātā parameśvarī tasmātsthāpyā ca pūjyā ca dhyeyā caiva viśeṣataḥ

Suta said: Thus the supreme goddess Kelishvari came into being; therefore she is especially worthy of installation, worship, and meditation.

Verse 28 (skanda.6.150.28)

एवं देव्या नरो यश्च पठते वा शृणोति वा ॥ वाच्यमानं स मुच्येत व्यसनेन गरीयसा

evaṁ devyā naro yaśca paṭhate vā śṛṇoti vā vācyamānaṁ sa mucyeta vyasanena garīyasā

Thus whatever man reads or hears this account of the goddess, or has it recited, is freed even from the gravest calamity.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.150.29)

भ्रष्टराज्योऽथवा राजा यः शृणोत्यष्टमीदिने ॥ स राज्यं लभते भूयो निखिलं हतकंटकम्

bhraṣṭarājyo'thavā rājā yaḥ śṛṇotyaṣṭamīdine sa rājyaṁ labhate bhūyo nikhilaṁ hatakaṁṭakam

Even a king who has lost his kingdom, if he listens to this on the eighth day, regains his entire kingdom once more, free of all thorns.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.150.30)

युद्धकाले च संप्राप्ते यश्चैतच्छृणुयान्नरः ॥ स हत्वा शत्रुसंघातं विजयं च समाप्नुयात्

yuddhakāle ca saṁprāpte yaścaitacchṛṇuyānnaraḥ sa hatvā śatrusaṁghātaṁ vijayaṁ ca samāpnuyāt

And whatever man, when the time of battle arrives, listens to this, having slain the host of his enemies, attains victory.
