yāvanna cāsya pāpasya kariṣyāmi pratikriyām tadvadadhvaṁ mahābhāgā devo vā devatā'thavā
not until I have taken revenge upon this sinful man. Therefore, O most fortunate ones, tell me — is there here any god or goddess,
Verse 3 (skanda.6.157.3)

tathānye siddhamantrā vā sadyaḥ pratyayakārakāḥ ārādhitā yathā sadyo mānuṣāṇāṁ varapradāḥ
or some other proven mantra, that grants its fruit at once — worshipping whom, as I have heard, men swiftly receive their boons?"

janā ūcuḥ camatkārapure sūryo yājñavalkyapratiṣṭhitaḥ asti vipra śruto'smābhiḥ sadyaḥ pratyayakārakaḥ
The people said: In Chamatkarapura is the Sun, established by Yajnavalkya, who, O brahmin, we have heard, grants his fruit at once.
Verse 7 (skanda.6.157.7)
sūryavāreṇa saptamyāṁ phalahastaḥ pradakṣiṇām yaḥ karoti narastasya hyaṣṭottaraśataṁ dvija
On a Sunday falling on the seventh lunar day, whatever man, fruit in hand, performs a hundred and eight circumambulations of him, O brahmin —

tasya siddhipradaḥ samyaṅmanasā vāṁchitaṁ dadet tathānyā śāradā nāma devī kāśmīrasaṁsthitā

Verse 9 (skanda.6.157.9)
upavāsakṛtereva sāpi siddhipradāyinī tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ janānāṁ sa dvijottamāḥ

Verse 10 (skanda.6.157.10)

samuddiśya camatkāraṁ tasmātsthānāttataḥ param camatkārapuraṁ prāpya saptamyāṁ sūryavāsare
— setting his aim on Chamatkara (the deity), went on from that place, and, arriving at Chamatkarapura on a Sunday falling on the seventh lunar day —
Verse 11 (skanda.6.157.11)
tatrāgatya tataḥ snātvā śucirbhūtvā samāhitaḥ gataḥ saṁti ṣṭhate yatra yājñavalkyakṛto raviḥ
— arrived there, bathed, purified himself, and, with focused mind, went to where the Sun established by Yajnavalkya stood.
Verse 12 (skanda.6.157.12)
tataḥ pradakṣiṇāḥ kṛtvā aṣṭottaraśataṁ mitāḥ nālikerāṇi cādāya śraddhayā parayāḥ yutaḥ

tataḥ kṣutkṣāmakaṁṭhaḥ sa pariśrāṁtastadagrataḥ upaviṣṭo japaṁ kurvansūryeṣṭaiḥ stavanaistadā
— weakened by hunger, utterly exhausted, he sat before him and continued his recitation with hymns of praise to the Sun.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.157.15)

ādityavratasaṁjñādyaiḥ sāmabhirdṛḍhabhaktibhāk kṣurikāmaṁtrapūrvaiśca tathaivātharvaṇodbhavaiḥ
— with the Sama-mantras called the Aditya-vrata, filled with firm devotion, and with the Kshurika mantras and those drawn from the Atharvaveda as well —
Verse 16 (skanda.6.157.16)
yāvadanyorkavārastu naiva tuṣṭo divākaraḥ paurṇamāsīdine prāpte vairāgyaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ

Verse 17 (skanda.6.157.17)
tataḥ puṣpo vidhāyātha snānaṁ dhautāṁbaraḥ śuciḥ bhūnāmnā sādhya bhūmiṁ ca sthaṁḍilārthaṁ dvijottamāḥ
Then Pushpa, having bathed, put on washed garments, and purified himself, O best of brahmins, purified the ground for a sthandila (earthen altar) —

— reciting "sutrāmāṇam," set the sacrificial fuel-sticks in place, and, taking up the vessel for sprinkling, performed the sprinkling rite —
Verse 21 (skanda.6.157.21)
pātrāṇāmatha sarveṣāṁ sruvādīnāṁ yathākramam tataḥ prakalpayāmāsa haviḥsthāne nijāṁ tanum
— then, having in due order prepared all the vessels beginning with the sruk and sruva, he placed his own body in the position of the oblation.

āhvayāmāsa vahniṁ ca pratyakṣo bhava deva me evaṁ mantreṇa kṛtvā taṁ saṁmukhaṁ jvalanaṁ tataḥ
— invoking Agni, with the mantra "O god, be present before me manifest," and turning that blazing fire to face him —
Verse 26 (skanda.6.157.26)

juhāva ca sa māṁsāni svāni cotkṛttya śastrataḥ lomabhyaḥ svāheti vidiśo digbhyo dattvā tataḥ param
— cutting his own flesh with his own weapon, he offered it as oblation into it; saying "lomabhyaḥ svāhā," he offered too to the intermediate and cardinal directions —

agnaye sviṣṭakṛtaiti yāvadātmānamākṣipet tāvaddhṛtaḥ sa sūryeṇa svahastena samaṁtataḥ
— saying "agnaye sviṣṭakṛte," and, just as he was about to cast his own body into the fire, the Sun himself seized him firmly with his own hand from every side.
Verse 29 (skanda.6.157.29)
dhṛtaśca sādaraṁ tena mā vipra kuru sāhasam nedṛgghomaḥ kṛtaḥ kvāpi kadācitkenaciddvija
Holding him with great respect, he said: "O brahmin, do not do such a rash thing; never has such a homa been performed anywhere, by anyone.
Verse 30 (skanda.6.157.30)
tuṣṭo'haṁ ca mahābhāga brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te adeyamapi dāsyāmi yatte manasivartate
O illustrious one, I am pleased with you; tell me, what shall I do for you? Even if what is in your heart is hard to obtain, I shall give it."
Verse 31 (skanda.6.157.31)
puṣpa uvāca yadi tuṣṭosi deveśa yadi deyo varo mama taddeyaṁ guṭikāyugmaṁ yadarthaṁ prārthayāmyaham
Pushpa said: "O lord of gods, if you are pleased, if you wish to grant me a boon, then give me the boon for which I am praying —
Verse 32 (skanda.6.157.32)
vaidiśe nagare cāsti maṇibhadro mahādhanī kubjāṁgaḥ kṣatriyo deva jarāvalisamanvitaḥ
— in the city of Vaidisha there is an exceedingly wealthy kshatriya named Manibhadra, O god, hunchbacked in body and stricken with old age,
Verse 33 (skanda.6.157.33)
abrahmaṇyo mahānīcaḥ kīnāśo janadūṣitaḥ dvayorekāṁ yadā vaktre sadā caiva karomyaham
hostile to brahmins, utterly base, miserly, and condemned by the people. Whenever I place one of these two upon my face —
Verse 34 (skanda.6.157.34)
tadā me tādṛśaṁ rūpamavikalpaṁ bhavatviti yadā punargṛhītvā tāṁ dvitīyāṁ prakṣipāmyaham
— then may I obtain that very form of his without any difference, and when I take up and cast away the other of the two —
Verse 35 (skanda.6.157.35)
tataśca sahajaṁ rūpaṁ mama bhūyātsureśvara vaidiśe nagare cāsti maṇibhadraḥ sureśvara
— then may my own natural form be restored to me, O lord of the gods. In the city of Vaidisha there is that Manibhadra, O lord —
Verse 36 (skanda.6.157.36)
aparaṁ tasya yatkiṁciddhanadhānyādikaṁ gṛhe tatsarvaṁ viditaṁ me syāttathā deva prajāyatām
— whatever wealth and grain and so forth is in his house, let all of that become known to me, O god — grant this too.
Verse 37 (skanda.6.157.37)
kiṁ vānena bahūktena tasya mitrāṇi bāṁdhavāḥ vyavahārāstathā sarve prakaṭāḥ syuḥ sadaiva hi
What use is there in saying more — let his friends, his kinsmen, and all his dealings too always lie plainly open to me —
Verse 38 (skanda.6.157.38)
na kaścijjāyate tatra vikalpaḥ kasyacitkvacit mama tasyādhama syāpi sarvakṛtyeṣu sarvadā
— so that between him and me, in every matter always, no one anywhere should perceive any difference."
Verse 39 (skanda.6.157.39)
bhāskara uvāca gṛhāṇa tvaṁ mahābhāga guṭikādvitayaṁ śubham śuklaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ ca vaktrasthaṁ vibheda jananaṁ mahat
The Sun said: "O illustrious one, take these two auspicious pills — one white and one black — which, placed upon the face, produce a great transformation.
Verse 40 (skanda.6.157.40)
śuklayā tasya rūpaṁ ca tava nūnaṁ bhaviṣyati kṛṣṇayāpi punaḥ svaṁ ca saṁprāpsyasi mahādvija
By the white pill you shall surely obtain his form, and, O great brahmin, by the black pill you shall regain your own form again."
Verse 41 (skanda.6.157.41)
puṣpa uvāca aparaṁ vada me deva saṁdehaṁ hṛdaye sthitam yattvāṁ pṛcchāmi deveśa tava kīrtivivardhanam
Pushpa said: "O god, tell me also of one more doubt lodged in my heart, which I ask you, O lord of gods, and which only enhances your own glory —
Verse 42 (skanda.6.157.42)
mayā śrutaṁ suraśreṣṭha saptamyāṁ sūryavāsare yaste pradakṣiṇānāṁ ca kuryādaṣṭottaraṁ śatam tasya tvaṁ tatkṣaṇādeva phalahastasya siddhidaḥ
I have heard, O foremost of gods, that whoever performs a hundred and eight circumambulations of you on a Sunday falling on the seventh lunar day, fruit in hand, you at once grant him siddhi —
Verse 43 (skanda.6.157.43)
mūrkhasyāpi ca pāpasya sarvadoṣānvitasya ca caturvedasya me kasmāttīrthayātrāparasya ca
— then for one such as myself, foolish, sinful, possessed of every fault, yet versed in all four Vedas and devoted to pilgrimage, why did it —
Verse 44 (skanda.6.157.44)
saptarātre gate tuṣṭo homa evaṁvidhe kṛte
— take seven nights to pass, and so elaborate a homa to be performed, before you became satisfied?"
Verse 45 (skanda.6.157.45)
śrīsūrya uvāca tāmasena tu bhāvena tvavā sarvamidaṁ kṛtam tena sarvaṁ vṛthā jātaṁ tvayā sarvaṁ ca yatkṛtam
Shri Surya said: "It was with a tamasic disposition that you did all this; therefore all that you performed became fruitless.
Verse 46 (skanda.6.157.46)
yatkiṁcitkriyate vipra tāmasaṁ bhāvamāśritaiḥ tatsarvaṁ jāyate vyarthaṁ kiṁ na vetti bhavā nidam
O brahmin, whatever is done under the sway of a tamasic disposition all becomes fruitless — do you not know this?
Verse 47 (skanda.6.157.47)
evamuktvā tataḥ sūryastasya gātrāṇyupāspṛśat khaṁḍitāni svahastena nirvraṇāni kṛtāni ca
So saying, the Sun touched his limbs with his own hand, whereby those severed limbs became whole again, without any wound.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.157.48)
abravīcca punaḥ puṣpaṁ prasanna vadanaḥ sthitaḥ anenaiva vidhānena yaḥ karoti kuśaṁḍikām
Then, with a pleased countenance, he spoke again to Pushpa: "Whoever performs the kushandika (fire-rite) by this very method —
Verse 49 (skanda.6.157.49)
somyabhāvaṁ samāśritya samidbhiścārkasaṁbhavaiḥ tilākṣatairviśeṣeṇa homaṁ yastu samācaret
— resting in a gentle (saumya) disposition, using fuel-sticks born of the sun-tree, offering especially with sesame and unbroken rice —
Verse 50 (skanda.6.157.50)
chandaṛṣisamopetamekaṁ yāvatsahasrakam tasya dāsyāmyahaṁ hṛtsthamadhikebhyo'dhikaṁ phalam
— up to a thousand oblations complete with their chandas and rishi — to him I shall give a fruit greater even than the one lodged in his heart."
Verse 51 (skanda.6.157.51)
evamuktvā sahasrāṁśustatraivāṁ taradhīyata dīpavallakṣito naiva kena mārgeṇa nirgataḥ
So saying, the thousand-rayed Sun vanished there on the spot; like the flame of a lamp, by what path he departed, no one could tell.
