Pushpa Comes Into Manibhadra's Wealth

Verse 1 (skanda.6.159.1)

सूत उवाच। पुष्पोऽपि तां समादाय माहिकाख्यां वरांगनाम् ॥ स तदा प्रययौ हृष्टो मणिभद्रस्य मंदिरम्

sūta uvāca puṣpo'pi tāṁ samādāya māhikākhyāṁ varāṁganām sa tadā prayayau hṛṣṭo maṇibhadrasya maṁdiram

Suta said: Pushpa too, taking that excellent woman Mahika with him, rejoicing, set out at once toward Manibhadra's house.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.159.2)

शंखतूर्यनिनादेन सर्वैस्तैः स्वजनैर्वृतः ॥ न कस्य तत्र संभूतो विकल्पस्तत्समुद्भवः

śaṁkhatūryaninādena sarvaistaiḥ svajanairvṛtaḥ na kasya tatra saṁbhūto vikalpastatsamudbhavaḥ

With the sound of conches and trumpets, surrounded by all his kinsmen — no doubt of that identity ever arose in anyone there.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.159.3)

भास्करस्य प्रसादेन तथैवान्यस्य कर्हिचित् ॥ सोऽपि मंदिरमासाद्य यथात्मपितृसंभवम्

bhāskarasya prasādena tathaivānyasya karhicit so'pi maṁdiramāsādya yathātmapitṛsaṁbhavam

This was by the grace of Bhaskara (the Sun), and likewise at any other time as well. He too, arriving at that mansion as if it were his own father's house —

Verse 4 (skanda.6.159.4)

उपविश्य ततो मध्ये बन्धून्सर्वान्समाह्वयत् ॥ अद्य तावद्दिने मह्यं तुलाग्रं कमला श्रिता

upaviśya tato madhye bandhūnsarvānsamāhvayat adya tāvaddine mahyaṁ tulāgraṁ kamalā śritā

— sat down in the midst of them and summoned all his relations: "Today, on this very day, Lakshmi's rise has reached the very tip of the balance-scale for me,

Verse 5 (skanda.6.159.5)

चलितापि पुनश्चास्याः सुपत्न्या वाक्यतः स्थिता ॥ कियंतं चैव कालं मे कार्पण्यं महदास्थितम्

calitāpi punaścāsyāḥ supatnyā vākyataḥ sthitā kiyaṁtaṁ caiva kālaṁ me kārpaṇyaṁ mahadāsthitam

and though wavering, she has, at my good wife's word, become steady once more. For how long a time did the deepest miserliness weigh upon me —

Verse 6 (skanda.6.159.6)

ज्ञातमद्य चला लक्ष्मीस्तेन त्यक्तं सुदूरतः ॥ तस्माद्बंधुजनैः सार्धं देवैर्विप्रैश्च कृत्स्नशः ॥ संविभक्तां करिष्यामि सत्येनात्मानमालभे

jñātamadya calā lakṣmīstena tyaktaṁ sudūrataḥ tasmādbaṁdhujanaiḥ sārdhaṁ devairvipraiśca kṛtsnaśaḥ saṁvibhaktāṁ kariṣyāmi satyenātmānamālabhe

today I have understood that Lakshmi is fickle, and that is why she was kept at a distance; therefore now, together with my kinsmen, entirely together with the gods and brahmins, I shall divide her among them all — this I say, swearing upon truth."

Verse 7 (skanda.6.159.7)

एवमुक्त्वा ततः सर्वान्समाहूय पृथक्पृथक् ॥ स नामभिर्ददौ वस्त्रं भूषणानि यथार्हतः

evamuktvā tataḥ sarvānsamāhūya pṛthakpṛthak sa nāmabhirdadau vastraṁ bhūṣaṇāni yathārhataḥ

So saying, then calling everyone separately by name, he gave to each, as was fitting, garments and ornaments.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.159.8)

ततो वेदविदो विप्रान्समाहूय स नामभिः ॥ एकैकस्य ददौ वित्तं सवस्त्रं श्रद्धयान्वितः

tato vedavido viprānsamāhūya sa nāmabhiḥ ekaikasya dadau vittaṁ savastraṁ śraddhayānvitaḥ

Then, calling by name the brahmins learned in the Vedas, he gave to each, with reverence, wealth together with garments.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.159.9)

ततस्तु नर्तकेभ्यश्च दीनांधेभ्यो विशेषतः ॥ ददौ भोज्यं समि ष्टान्नं सवस्त्रं च द्विजोत्तमाः

tatastu nartakebhyaśca dīnāṁdhebhyo viśeṣataḥ dadau bhojyaṁ sami ṣṭānnaṁ savastraṁ ca dvijottamāḥ

O best of brahmins, then to the dancers, and especially to the poor and the blind, he gave food, excellent grain, and garments too.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.159.10)

ततस्तु स्वयमेवान्नं बुभुजे भार्यया सह ॥ विसृज्य तान्समायातान्स्वजनान्ब्राह्मणैः सह

tatastu svayamevānnaṁ bubhuje bhāryayā saha visṛjya tānsamāyātānsvajanānbrāhmaṇaiḥ saha

Then he himself also ate together with his wife, having taken leave of all the kinsmen and brahmins who had gathered there.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.159.11)

एवं तेन तदा प्राप्तं वित्तं च परसंभवम् ॥ बुभुजे स्वेच्छया नित्यं तदा भार्यासमन्वितः

evaṁ tena tadā prāptaṁ vittaṁ ca parasaṁbhavam bubhuje svecchayā nityaṁ tadā bhāryāsamanvitaḥ

Thus, at that time, he came into that wealth belonging to another, which he then enjoyed day after day as he wished, together with his wife.
