The Glory of Pushpaditya at Hatakeshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.6.161.1)

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ ॥ अथ तेन द्विजाः सर्वे ब्रह्मस्थाने निवेशिताः ॥ चातुश्चरणसंज्ञाश्च ततस्तस्य निवेशिताः

sūta uvāca atha tena dvijāḥ sarve brahmasthāne niveśitāḥ cātuścaraṇasaṁjñāśca tatastasya niveśitāḥ

Suta said: Then all the brahmins were seated by him in the Brahmasthana, and thereupon cattle too were made over to him.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.161.2)

सोऽपि केशान्परित्यज्य सर्वगात्रसमुद्भवान् ॥ निजपत्न्या समोपेतः प्रणम्य च द्विजोत्तमान्

so'pi keśānparityajya sarvagātrasamudbhavān nijapatnyā samopetaḥ praṇamya ca dvijottamān

He too, having shed all the hair grown over his whole body, together with his own wife, bowed to the foremost of brahmins,

Verse 3 (skanda.6.161.3)

कृतांजलिपुटो भूत्वा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥ भास्करस्यास्य विहितः प्रासादोयं मया द्विजाः

kṛtāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā vākyametaduvāca ha bhāskarasyāsya vihitaḥ prāsādoyaṁ mayā dvijāḥ

and with joined palms he spoke these words: O brahmins, this temple of Bhaskara has been built by me.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.161.4)

पुष्पादित्य इति ख्यातिं प्रयातु भुवनत्रये ॥ ॥ ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ॥ ॥ न वयं याज्ञवल्क्यस्य कीर्तिं नेष्यामहे क्षयम्

puṣpāditya iti khyātiṁ prayātu bhuvanatraye brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ na vayaṁ yājñavalkyasya kīrtiṁ neṣyāmahe kṣayam

Let it attain fame in the three worlds by the name Pushpaditya. The brahmins said: We shall not allow the glory of Yajnavalkya to fall into decline.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.161.5)

प्रायश्चित्तं प्रदास्यामश्चित्तस्य हृदयंगमम् ॥ अन्ये च ब्राह्मणाः प्रोचुः केचिन्मध्यस्थवृत्तयः

prāyaścittaṁ pradāsyāmaścittasya hṛdayaṁgamam anye ca brāhmaṇāḥ procuḥ kecinmadhyasthavṛttayaḥ

We shall prescribe an expiation pleasing to the heart — so said some other brahmins as well, who took a mediating stance.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.161.6)

वृत्त्यर्थमस्य देवस्य लक्षं होमेऽत्र कल्प्यताम् ॥ लक्षं तु सर्वविप्राणां प्रायश्चित्तविशुद्धये

vṛttyarthamasya devasya lakṣaṁ home'tra kalpyatām lakṣaṁ tu sarvaviprāṇāṁ prāyaścittaviśuddhaye

For the maintenance of this deity, let a hundred thousand oblations be offered here in fire-sacrifice, and a hundred thousand more for the purificatory expiation of all the brahmins.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.161.7)

॥ पुष्प उवाच ॥ ॥ तस्मात्सर्वे द्विजश्रेष्ठा मन्नाम्ना कीर्तयंत्विमम् ॥ पुष्पादित्यमिति ख्यातिं कीर्तयंतु तथानिशम्

puṣpa uvāca tasmātsarve dvijaśreṣṭhā mannāmnā kīrtayaṁtvimam puṣpādityamiti khyātiṁ kīrtayaṁtu tathāniśam

Pushpa said: Therefore, O best of brahmins, let all of you glorify this deity by my name, and forever proclaim the fame 'Pushpaditya'.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.161.8)

अनया भार्यया मह्यं मान्या या स्थापिता पुरा ॥ दुर्गाऽस्याश्चात्र नाम्ना वै भूयात्ख्याताऽत्र सत्पुरे

anayā bhāryayā mahyaṁ mānyā yā sthāpitā purā durgā'syāścātra nāmnā vai bhūyātkhyātā'tra satpure

And through this wife of mine, who was formerly honoured and established here — let her too become famed here in this holy city, by the name Durga.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.161.9)

॥ ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ॥ ॥ दुःशीलेन पुराऽकारि प्रासादो हरसंभवः ॥ दुर्वासःस्थापितस्यापि भवद्भिस्तुष्ट मानसैः

brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ duḥśīlena purā'kāri prāsādo harasaṁbhavaḥ durvāsaḥsthāpitasyāpi bhavadbhistuṣṭa mānasaiḥ

The brahmins said: Long ago a temple of Hara's origin was built by the ill-natured Duhshila, and the one established by Durvasas too was accepted by all of you with contented minds.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.161.10)

तथाप्यस्य तु दीनस्य प्रासादः क्रियतां द्विजाः

tathāpyasya tu dīnasya prāsādaḥ kriyatāṁ dvijāḥ

Even so, O brahmins, let the temple of this humble man too be accepted.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.161.11)

नाममात्रेण देवस्य दुःशीलेन यया पुरा ॥ अनेनाराधितः पूर्वं स्वमांसैरेष भास्करः

nāmamātreṇa devasya duḥśīlena yayā purā anenārādhitaḥ pūrvaṁ svamāṁsaireṣa bhāskaraḥ

As formerly the ill-natured Duhshila worshipped the deity merely by name, so too this man had earlier worshipped this Bhaskara with his own flesh.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.161.12)

तस्मान्न क्षतिरस्याथ दत्ते नाम्नि यथा पुरा ॥ नाम्ना माहिकया नाम माहीत्येव च सा भवेत्

tasmānna kṣatirasyātha datte nāmni yathā purā nāmnā māhikayā nāma māhītyeva ca sā bhavet

Therefore there is no harm in granting the name as before; and by the name Mahika, she shall become known as Mahi.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.161.13)

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ पुष्पेण दाने दत्तेऽथ संमतेनाग्रजन्मनाम् ॥ मध्यमेन कृतं नाम पुष्पादित्य इति श्रुतम्

sūta uvāca puṣpeṇa dāne datte'tha saṁmatenāgrajanmanām madhyamena kṛtaṁ nāma puṣpāditya iti śrutam

Suta said: Thus, when the gift was given by Pushpa and agreed to by the brahmins, the name Pushpaditya, conferred by the mediator, is thus heard of.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.161.14)

तत्पत्न्या चापि या तत्र दुर्गा देवी द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ नाम्ना माहिकया नाम माहीत्येव च साऽभवत्

tatpatnyā cāpi yā tatra durgā devī dvijottamāḥ nāmnā māhikayā nāma māhītyeva ca sā'bhavat

O best of brahmins, his wife too, who was there the goddess Durga, became known by the name Mahika, that is, Mahi.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.161.15)

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ ॥ एतद्वः सर्वमाख्यातं यत्पृष्टोस्मि द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ पुष्पा दित्यो यथा जातो याज्ञवल्क्यप्रतिष्ठितः

sūta uvāca etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ yatpṛṣṭosmi dvijottamāḥ puṣpā dityo yathā jāto yājñavalkyapratiṣṭhitaḥ

Suta said: O best of brahmins, all that you had asked has now been related to you — how Pushpaditya came into being, established by Yajnavalkya.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.161.16)

अद्यापि कलिकाले स दृष्टो भक्त्या सुरेश्वरः ॥ नाशयेद्दिनजं पापं नराणां नात्र संशयः

adyāpi kalikāle sa dṛṣṭo bhaktyā sureśvaraḥ nāśayeddinajaṁ pāpaṁ narāṇāṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ

Even today, in this Kali age, that lord of the gods, when seen with devotion, destroys the sin accrued by men during the day — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.161.17)

तथा च सप्तमीयुक्ते रवेर्वारे द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ अष्टोत्तरशतंयावत्फलहस्तः करोति यः ॥ प्रदक्षिणां च सद्भक्त्या स लभेद्वांछितं फलम्

tathā ca saptamīyukte ravervāre dvijottamāḥ aṣṭottaraśataṁyāvatphalahastaḥ karoti yaḥ pradakṣiṇāṁ ca sadbhaktyā sa labhedvāṁchitaṁ phalam

Likewise, O best of brahmins, on a Sunday joined with the seventh lunar day, whoever performs circumambulation one hundred and eight times with fruit in hand and true devotion obtains the fruit he desires.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.161.18)

माहीकामपि यो दुर्गां नित्यमेव प्रपश्यति ॥ न स पश्यति कष्टानि तस्मिन्नहनि कर्हिचित्

māhīkāmapi yo durgāṁ nityameva prapaśyati na sa paśyati kaṣṭāni tasminnahani karhicit

Whoever beholds the goddess Mahika Durga every day never encounters hardship on that day.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.161.19)

चैत्रशुक्लचतुर्दश्यां यस्तां पूजयते नरः । तस्य संवत्सरंयावन्नापत्संजायते क्वचित्

caitraśuklacaturdaśyāṁ yastāṁ pūjayate naraḥ tasya saṁvatsaraṁyāvannāpatsaṁjāyate kvacit

For the man who worships her on the fourteenth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, no calamity befalls him anywhere for a full year.
